Defination
 Tuberculosis is a serious disease caused by a bacterial
infection of the lungs but can also affect other parts of
the body, such as the brain, kidneys and bones.
 Tuberculosis, commonly known as TB, is caused by the
bacterium Mycobacterium tuberculosis (M.
Tuberculosis.
Sings and Symptoms
There are two symptoms in tuberculosis:
Latent tuberculosis occurs when a person becomes infected
with tuberculosis, but the immune system is able to resist
illness.
Active tiberculosis: This condition makes you sick and can
spread to others.
 Chest pain, especially with coughing or breathing
 Coughing for three or more weeks
 Coughing up blood Fever, chills, and night sweats.
 Fatigu and weakness.
 Loss of appetite and unexplained weight loss
 Nontender swollen lymph nodes
Caues of tuberculosis
 Tuberculosis (TB) is caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis, slow-growing
bacteria that thrive in areas of the body that are rich in blood and oxygen,
such as the lungs.
 Tuberculosis is a contagious disease that spreads when an infected person
coughs or sneezes.
Treatments and Durgs
 Medications are the cornerstone of tuberculosis
treatment. With tuberculosis, must take antibiotics for
at least six to nine months.
 The most common medication used to treat tuberculosis
include:
 Rifampin (Rifadin, Rimactane)
 Ethambutol (Myambutol)
 Isoniazid
 Pyrazinamide
Prevantion
 Tuberculosis prevention and control efforts primarily rely
on the vaccination of infants and the detection and
appropriate treatment of active cases
 To avoid getting an active TB infection:
 Do not spend long periods of time in stuffy, enclosed rooms
with anyone who has active TB until that person has been
treated for at least 2 weeks.
 Use protective measures, such as face masks, if you work in
a facility that cares for people who have untreated TB.
 If you live with someone who has active TB, help and
encourage the person to follow treatment instructions.
 Vaccine is bacillus calmette-Guerin(BCG) used to prevent
which, while it is effective against pulmonary TB.
