Single mode fiber uses a very small core diameter that restricts light transmission to a single ray traveling through the core. This allows single mode fiber to carry signals at much higher speeds than multimode fiber and is used for high data rate and long distance telecommunications. The core diameter is typically 8 to 10 μm and transmits light in the near infrared spectrum at wavelengths like 1310nm and 1550nm.

This thesis focuses on mobile phones antenna design with brief description about the historical development, basic parameters and the types of antennas which are used in mobile phones. Mobile phones antenna design section consists of two proposed PIFA antennas. The first design concerns a single band antenna with resonant frequency at GPS frequency (1.575GHz). The first model is designed with main consideration that is to have the lower possible PIFA single band dimensions with reasonable return loss (S11) and the efficiencies. Second design concerns in a wideband PIFA antenna which cover the range from 1800MHz to 2600MHz. This range covers certain important bands: GSM (1800MHz & 1900MHz), UMTS (2100MHz), Bluetooth & Wi-Fi (2.4GHz) and LTE system (2.3GHz, 2.5GHz, and 2.6GHz). The wideband PIFA design is achieved by using slotted ground plane technique. The simulations for both models are performed in COMSOL Multiphysics.
The last two parts of the thesis present the problems of mobile phones antenna. Starting with Specific absorption rate (SAR) problem, efficiency of Mobile phones antenna, and hand-held environment.

2. What is single mode
fiber
The term “single” in single mode does not mean 1 strand of fiber,
but rather means the coherent nature of the light rays in the core
of the glass fiber.
3. The core of the glass fiber has diameter measurement which
determine to some extent the behavior of the light within it.
The most common type of single mode fiber has a core
diameter of 8 to 10 μm and is designed for use in the near
infrared (the most common are 1310nm and 1550nm).
4. Singlemode fibers are smaller in core diameter
than multimode fibers and offer much greater
bandwidth
The fiber core that is so small that only light ray
at 0° incident angle can stably pass through
without much loss, is called single mode fiber.
5. Please note that the mode structure depends on the
wavelength of the light used,
so that this fiber actually supports a small number of
additional modes at visible wavelengths.
The basic requirement for single mode fiber is that the core
be small enough to restrict transmission to a single mode.

Single mode fiber doesn’t have modal dispersion, modal noise,
and other effects that come with multimode transmission;
Single mode fiber can carry signals at much higher speeds than
multimode fibers.
They are standard choice for high data rates or long distance span (longer
than a couple of kilometers) telecommunications which use laser diode
based fiber optic transmission equipment
