Meningococcal meningitis is a serious bacterial infection caused by Neisseria meningitidis. It is a major public health problem in Africa, where there is a meningitis belt of 26 countries with high rates of the disease. Transmission occurs through respiratory droplets from carriers. While most cases are asymptomatic, it can cause rapid onset of symptoms like stiff neck, fever, and headache. Timely antibiotic treatment is important to reduce the 5-10% fatality rate. A meningococcal conjugate vaccine has been developed that is expected to effectively control group A epidemics in Africa through herd immunity.
