Monkeypox is a viral zoonosis that mainly occurs in Central and West Africa and has emerged as a significant public health concern since the eradication of smallpox. The disease can be transmitted via contact with infected animals or humans, presenting symptoms similar to smallpox but generally less severe, with a mortality rate of 1-10% reported in Africa. Current efforts in Nigeria focus on surveillance and response to outbreaks, though a knowledge gap persists regarding the virus and its transmission.
