Shear force diagrams and bending moment diagrams are used to determine the internal shear and bending forces at any point along a beam. Beams are structural members designed to support loads perpendicular to their long axis. Shear and bending moment can be expressed as functions of position along the beam (x), and plotting these functions allows visualization of how the internal forces vary continuously over the length of the beam.
