 Stage one: Receiving
 Focus your attention
 Avoid distraction
 Maintain your role as listener
 Stage two: Understanding
 Avoid assuming you understand
 See the Speaker message
 Ask question for Clarification
 Stage three: Remembering
 Focus your attention on the central idea
 Organize what you hear
 Repeat
 Stage four: Evaluating
 Resist evaluation
 Distinguish
 Identify any biases
 Recognize fallacious forms of reasoning
 Stage Five: Responding
 Support the speaker
 Own your responses
 Resist responding to another’s feelings
 Focus on the other person
 Avoid being a thought-completing listener
 There are the five dimensions of listening
1. Empathic and Objective Listening
2. Nonjudgmental and Critical Listening
3. Surface and Depth Listening
4. Polite and Impolite Listening
5. Active and Inactive Listening
 Punctuate the message from the speaker’s point of
view
 Engage in equal, two-way conversation
 Seek to understand both thoughts and feeling
 Avoid “ offensive listening
 Strive to be objective
 Keep an open mind and avoid prejudging
 Avoid filtering out over simplifying complex messages
 Recognize your biases
 Avoid sharpening
 Recognize the fallacies of languages
 Focus on both verbal and nonverbal messages
 Listening for both content and relation messages
 Make special note of self-reflexive statements
 Don’t disregard the literal meaning
Polite and Impolite Listening
 Avoid interrupting the speaker
 Give supportive listening
 Show empathy with the speaker
 Maintain eye contact

  • 4.  What is the process of listening?  There are 5 Stages  Receiving  Understanding  Remembering  Evaluating  Responding
  • 5.  Stage one: Receiving  Focus your attention  Avoid distraction  Maintain your role as listener
  • 6.  Stage two: Understanding  Avoid assuming you understand  See the Speaker message  Ask question for Clarification
  • 7.  Stage three: Remembering  Focus your attention on the central idea  Organize what you hear  Repeat
  • 8.  Stage four: Evaluating  Resist evaluation  Distinguish  Identify any biases  Recognize fallacious forms of reasoning
  • 9.  Stage Five: Responding  Support the speaker  Own your responses  Resist responding to another’s feelings  Focus on the other person  Avoid being a thought-completing listener
  • 10.  There are the five dimensions of listening 1. Empathic and Objective Listening 2. Nonjudgmental and Critical Listening 3. Surface and Depth Listening 4. Polite and Impolite Listening 5. Active and Inactive Listening
  • 11.  Punctuate the message from the speaker’s point of view  Engage in equal, two-way conversation  Seek to understand both thoughts and feeling  Avoid “ offensive listening  Strive to be objective
  • 12.  Keep an open mind and avoid prejudging  Avoid filtering out over simplifying complex messages  Recognize your biases  Avoid sharpening  Recognize the fallacies of languages
  • 13.  Focus on both verbal and nonverbal messages  Listening for both content and relation messages  Make special note of self-reflexive statements  Don’t disregard the literal meaning
  • 14. Polite and Impolite Listening  Avoid interrupting the speaker  Give supportive listening  Show empathy with the speaker  Maintain eye contact  Give positive feedback
