Essay on Boethius and Plato s God
Plato was born in Athens, Greece around 427 B.C. He was always interested in politics, until he
witnessed his mentor and teacher, Socrates, death. After learning of the callousness of politics, Plato
changed his mind and eventually opened up The Academy, which is considered if not the first, one of
the first Universities. Students at the Academy studied many different fields of science, including
biological and astronomical. The students also studied many other fields, such as math. Plato
developed many views that were mathematical in nature. He expressed these views through his
writings. According to Dr. Calkins of Andrew University, Timaeus is probably the most renowned of
Plato s thirty five dialogues. [In it] Plato expresses that he ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Boethius was involved in a consulship for most of his life, and is probably most admired for the
translations he completed in his lifetime, which include, Porphyry s Introduction to the Categories of
Aristotle and probably Aristotle s Metaphysics, Physics, De Generatione et Corruptione, De Anima,
and Poetics (Watts 16). Boethius was imprisoned and then executed in 524 AD, while imprisoned and
before his execution he wrote his best known work, The Consolation of Philosophy. In relation to
Plato s Demiurge, Boethius, being a Christian worships God. Watts, in summarizing in part the The
Consolation of Philosophy, says, Philosophy descends to Boethius form on high (I, 3) and leads him
back through various paths to God Himself... and the realization that God is the supreme good...
(Watts 25).
In order to compare or contrast the two entities, the characteristics must be explained. In a 2005 Bryn
Mawr Classical Review of T.K. Johansen s Plato s Natural Philosophy: A Study of the Timaeus
Critias, they explicate the Demiurges existence by saying, . ..the existence of the demiurge as an
inference to the best explanation of the order and beauty of the cosmos. (Bryn Mawr 1).The Demiurge
is also classified as an external cause of order. This is connected with the orders of being and
becoming expressed in Plato s Timaeus.

The Tunnel And What You Pawn I Will Redeem
The main characters in the stories Through the Tunnel and What You Pawn I Will Redeem both have
their mind set on determination. In the story Through the Tunnel, Jerry, the young English boy, sees a
group of boys diving and calls them men and wants to be like them. The tunnel they swim through is
the symbol in the story used to describe his transition to manhood. In What You Pawn I Will Redeem,
Jackson found his grandmother s stolen regalia that had one yellow bead sewed on it that represented a
flaw. The yellow bead is the symbol in this story representing Jackson as a flaw in life. He was
determined to get the regalia back to feel like he is part of his culture and to make them proud. Doris
Lessing, the author of Through the Tunnel, and Sherman Alexie, the author of What You Pawn I Will
Redeem, both have symbols that encourage the main characters to achieve their goal.
The story Through the Tunnel is about a young boy named Jerry and his mother going on vacation to a
beach resort that they have previously visited. The villa they are staying at consist of two beaches. The
safe, crowded beach is where Jerry s mother goes and the wild Rocky Bay is where Jerry ends up
spending most of his time. While Jerry swims in the water at the wild bay, he sees a group of boys
diving into the water. Jerry knew right when he saw them, he wanted to be just like them. In his eyes,

The Frog And The Scorpion Story In The Crying Game
The Frog and the Scorpion story in the Crying game movie
Early, in the Crying Game movie by Neil Jordan, Jodi starts telling Fergus a story about two kinds of
people in the world, Those who give and those who take (22.24). Jodi says this at a moment when he
is not only kidnap but also hungry. He knows that by telling this story he can make Fergus feed him.
Once Jodi gets his food, he persuades Fergus into taking off his hood by continuing the story. The
story is about a frog who helps cross the river, and a scorpion who stink even when he was receiving
help. By using the story of the Frog and scorpion, the Crying game movie suggests that we are born in
an unchangeable, undeniable and certain way that we must embrace because it is part of our nature.
However, I claim that the movie does not support the learning of the fable because the characters
make their own decisions based on factors as personality, survival, etc. the story of the frog and
scorpion is a manipulative tactic used by Jodi to get what he needs. As his life is at risk, he decides to
persuade Fergus with his charisma, charming personality, jokes, compliments and ultimately, the
fable. Jodi is aware that in order to make his way out, he has to make sure that Fergus believes that he
is denying his nature with his wrongdoing. However, Jodi knows better than anyone else that Fergus
has the power to choose whatever he wants to do but he persuades him into believing that he cannot.

The Theoretical Basis Of Congestion Costs
2.2 Theoretical basis of congestion costs (diseconomies)
One by product of agglomeration is congestion, which arise as economic agents compete for limited
land, limited output markets, and limited fixed public infrastructure such as highways and
communication facilities. Other negative consequences of agglomeration such as environmental
pollution, noise, and high crime rates may also occur.
In general, congestion externalities originate from the difference between private and social costs. The
literature on optimal city size suggests that households and firms choose to locate in a city by
evaluating the prevailing average social costs (AC) such as local taxes or commuting/transport costs in
the city, but ignoring the increased social costs their arrivals generate for the whole urban population
(Alonso 1971; Richardson 1972; Mills and De Ferranti 1971). Therefore, the average social cost
would usually be lower than the marginal social cost (MC) born by the city as a whole (Alonso 1971;
Richardson 1972; Mills and De Ferranti 1971). Firms and residents would continue to move into the
city as long as marginal benefits, as represented by marginal value of outputs (MP) in the city, exceed
the marginal social cost plus the opportunity cost of moving (MP MC + opportunity cost for moving)
(Alonso 1971; Richardson 1972). The result is that cities would grow to a size that is more congested
than the optimal size for maximizing urban production, that size being the point where the

The Issue Of Identity Politics
Identity Politics means to separate problems based upon race, class, religion, gender, ethnicity,
ideology, nation, sexual orientation, culture, information preference,
History, musical or literary preference, medical conditions, professions or hobbies. It is most
Notably be found in class movements, feminist movements, gay, lesbian and bisexual movements. The
Presidential candidates promise things just to get a vote. They might target the poor population
Promising to help by assisting with housing, food, clothes, and other essentials. On the flip side, they
might go to other States to where there are more financially fit individuals promising them the total
opposite of what was just promised to others. Identity politics is a form of Divide and
Conquer , which refers to sociology and economics, a strategy to gain or maintain power. Since
identity political arguments that focus on interest and perspectives of groups people can identify
themselves with, it could be fair to say that not all members of any given group. For example: sexual
orientation, class, religion, nationality, cultures, and ethnicity are necessary involved in identity
politics. Unless, the identity politicians include the ways in which people s politics may be affected by
these loosely combined factions. Although it can be limited to earlier involvement. Identity politics
has made its way into the 20th century in class movement like feminist, gay, lesbian, bisexual,
disabled, and ethnic movements.

Thermal Factors That Affect Human Comfort
Introduction
There are many factors that affect human comfort in the internal built environment. Human comfort is
affected by thermal factors; physical factors and personal factors. Another factor that can affect human
comfort is sound of the environment around them. The final factor that affects the human comfort is
the visual of the room and the light intensity. There are ways to measure the physical factors that affect
human thermal comfort, the sound comfort and the visual comfort.
Thermal Factors
The average temperature inside a building is 19 21 degrees and outside is 1 degrees, but there are two
different thermal factors that affect the temperature of the room and human comfort; they are physical
and personal factors. The physical factors include; air temperature, mean radiation temperature,
relative humidity and air velocity. The air temperature inside of a building will change depending on
the temperature outside the building and the k values of the materials used to build the walls and
insulation. K values are the values that all materials have which shows how good insulators the
materials are, the lower the k value the more affective the materials are at retaining heat. The u value
is what overall heat resistance of the materials are. Air temperature is also affected by the people
inside the building and they activity they are doing. The mean radiant temperature also affects the
human comfort; mean radiant temperature is the radiation that is coming into the

Vagus Nerve Stimulation
This article discusses how an electrical shock given to a nerve that travels from the brainstem to all the
organs, called the vagus nerve, can help to stop autoimmune diseases. In the past, stimulation of the
nerve was used to treat epilepsy and depression. In 1998, a neurosurgeon by the name of Kevin Tracy
at the Feinstein Institute for Medical Research found that the stimulation of the vagus nerve in rats
greatly reduced the production of TNF a which is a protein that helps the process of inflammation.
Basically, when this nerve is stimulated, it releases increased noradrenaline in the spleen to immune T
cells. In turn, the T cells release more acetylcholine to the macrophages. Last, these macrophage
release less of the pro inflammatory TNF a. To carry on Tracy s work, Akiko Nakai at the Osaka
University in Japan found that nerve stimulation limited what T cells could do in the bloodstream in
the process of inflammation. Over ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Although there is no cure for autoimmune disease, this treatment could potentially be very effective
and efficient. The power of the electrical shock needed to stimulate the nerve is miniscule relative to
its effects on all the organs it connects to, including the most important one to this treatment, the
spleen. Unlike other treatments, all this requires is an electrical shock that is accessible at any medical
center.
This article interests me personally because I find that the interdependence of the nervous and the
immune system is fascinating. Two different organ systems that have only one common goal: to
maintain homeostasis. In all other aspects, they are prodigiously different on how they work, why they
work, and what they do for the body. This article also shows how humans these days are brilliant
enough to think of these techniques that would have been

The Theory Of The Social Learning Theory
The act of learning is an innate characteristic belonging to people across the globe. Learning can take
place in many different forms (reading, writing, speaking, listening, excellency in a particular skill,
etc.) and settings, generalizing from one content area to another. It also occurs at varying rates across a
diverse spectrum of populations and can be influenced by any number of factors including
personalities, perceived abilities, societal values and environment. Some individuals acquire
information best in formal settings, like the direct instruction or supports found in a classroom, while
others may benefit more from informal instruction, learning incidentally from their surroundings.
Throughout the course of history, there have been many perspectives regarding education and the
manner in which individuals learn best. I will primarily focus on the educational perspective of the
Social Learning Theory and briefly discuss its history as well as its prominent figures, components,
and implications in regard to language and literacy both inside and outside of the classroom.
In 1954 Julian B. Rotter developed the Social Learning Theory that gravitated away from Freud s
psychoanalysis and Skinner s behaviorism that focused on behavior rather than intrinsic thought. They
were the most popular theories during that time, focusing on experimental methods, emphasizing
variables that are observable, measurable, and manipulatable, avoiding whatever is subjective,
internal,

Walt Disney Influence
Walt Disney s first animated film was Snow White and The Seven Dwarfs in 1937. Over the years
Walt Disney came out with family friendly movies such as, Sleeping Beauty (1959), Pocahontas
(1995), Aladdin (1992), and Cinderella (1950). Walt Disney influenced many people in many ways
with his work. The critic Robert Hughes credited him with inventing Pop art. Hughes wrote, When in
Fantasia, Mickey Mouse clambered up to the (real) podium and shook hands with the (real) conductor
Leopold Stokowski. He also helped reinvent graphic design. He did this by, introducing the soft,
round, bold, colorful forms that decades later would be adopted and adapted by a vanguard of fine
artist.
Walt Disney s films are an informal way for children to learn lessons. This can be compared to the
McGuffey reader. At the end of both stories and films there is a lesson that is taught. In Walt Disney s
Pinocchio, the lesson is to tell the truth and in Cinderella the lesson is to be kind. Walt Disney films
are also based on American history or fairy tales that he Americanized. Some would argue ... Show

spaces, and only hints at the disadvantages society brought against those of African American
backgrounds. A critic Esther Terry stated that, Tiana s success depends solely on her own actions, her
ability to reconnect with uncorrupted American nature, and her willingness to interconnect with her
surrounding community. Others argue that, Disney is seeking to entertain through action, comedy, and
romance rather than explore complex issues. So, if that s the case, why set these films in eras that
problematize race in this way? The Princess and the Frog was released in 2009. This could make one

Archduke Franz Ferdinand s Role In World War 1
The assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand was a major provoking factor for World War 1. The
heir to the Austro Hungarian Empire, Archduke Franz Ferdinand was under fire for the decision to
annex the Balkans. This decision infuriated Serbian nationals there who believed they should be
allowed to join Serbia who was newly independent; the decision also strengthened Serbian nationalist
groups. Franz Ferdinand was in Sarajevo to inspect his troops there on the day he was assassinated.
The Black Hand Gang was responsible for the death of the Archduke and his wife. The Austria
Hungarian government blamed Serbia for the attacks. After failed negotiations, Austria declared war

More specifically, the role of women in society changed. While men were away at war, women often
took over business operations. In fact, by 1918, nearly three million women were employed in the
textile, food, and war industries. Many restrictions on women s participation in these industries were
torn down during World War 1. Women slowly started gaining more social responsibilities. They
started working as streetcar conductors and radio operators; they also worked in logging camps and
steel mills. During the war, they not only had to support their households, but also the war effort. After
the war, their labor was far from over. It was now more socially acceptable to continue working. In
addition, many men died in the war and women had to work single handedly to support their family.
The public view of war changed after World War 1. Before the war, the public had seen war as it was
in the 1800s with large armies attacking each other in open fields in battles that rarely lasted for more
than a day. However, new technology and tactics made warfare much more gruesome. One tactic
became known as trench warfare. When the British released a realistic film about the Battle of the
Somme, a battle fought by Britain and France against Germany, the public was shocked. Soldiers no
longer participated in distinct battles; they could be attacked at any time of day. This constant state of
fear had obvious psychological effects. The public became disillusioned about war due to the large
body counts as well. Pacifism became more popular as a result. The growth of independence
movements was another important effect of the war. In territories controlled by Russia and England in
particular, independence movements became common. The colonies had been largely neglected over
the four years the countries were at war, and they finally saw their opportunity to rise up. During the
war, the colonies had quietly become less reliant on

Theme Of The Interlopers And The Machine That Won The War
The Interlopers and The Machine That Won The War are two different short stories that heavily push
the themes of irony and suspense and although they may share these similarities I believe that they
also have many differences. Throughout this essay I am going to be breaking down these two stories
to find what sort of similarities and differences they contain. A similarity? They are both fictional
stories. A difference? One takes place in a Sci fi and futuristic setting, while the other takes place in a
more modern, or possibly older time frame.
Although two stories can have a similar overall genre, they may have a different and more specific
genre. A good example of this is the stories, The Interlopers and The Machine That Won The War.
Both of these stories are works of fiction, none of the events that take place in either of them are real.
On closer inspection we realize that although they are both fiction, they are different types of fiction.
The Interlopers is a mystery. The story starts by explaining that in time past two neighboring families
went to court over they strip of land between them, to find out which family owned it. When they
court reached their decision and chose which family won, they losing family, frustrated that they didn
t get the land, started a rivalry that would last generations. They mystery? Who are they families and
why are they still fighting over this land, years and years later. The Machine that Won The War is a
work of Sci fi. It has

His music is described by Eithne Quinn as embodying toughness and tenderness that he outmatched
the other G Funk artists from the time. I see the toughness from the environment he grew up in that
was filled with violence, guns, drugs, etc. Tupac lived off of the streets and grew up with little to no
privileges. As a result, he had to look out for himself and the odds were stacked against him. Me
Against the World exemplifies this struggle as he felt like it was just him against the world at times.
The word tenderness also perfectly describes Tupac s music. The lyrics in this song sound heartfelt.
He expresses how he feels about the world around him by talking about the issues people outside of
the ghetto are unaware of, but people who live in the ghetto are used to seeing people get shot and the
fear of being shot when he steps outside. As Quinn describes it, this song and album as a whole are
different from his previous work because it focuses on his individual paranoia. It does not seem like
his lyrics are targeted at one specific audience. It sounds like he is talking to himself at some times
and is retelling his experiences, venting his frustrations with the world, and the chorus is his way of
accepting his situation and how the world is by saying, It s just me against the world and I ve got
nothing to lose. In the last verse, it sounds like he is talking to young people who

The Theme Of Religion In The Bridge Of San Luis Rey
Many people view religion as a source of conflict. Religious tensions ignite wars and split nations.
Religious disagreements separate communities and isolate individuals. For these reasons, many people
choose to leave their religion and to burn the bridges to their faith. Thornton Wilder, an American
author and playwright, attributes his inspiration for the 1927 Pulitzer Prize winning novel, The Bridge
of San Luis Rey (Burbanx 7), to arguments with my father, a strict Calvinist (Wilder xiv). Instead of
allowing religious arguments to create broken relationships, Wilder embraced his religious influences
and built a bridge of faith, grace, and love. Thornton Wilder, in his novel, The Bridge of San Luis Rey,
critiques Humanism, Puritanism, and Catholicism in order to promote a unique Christian worldview.
Wilder begins The Bridge of San Luis Rey by setting up a dichotomy of life being controlled by
accident or by divine plan. The novel s famous opening line describes the break of an Inca bridge: on
Friday noon, July the twentieth, 1714, the finest bridge in all Peru broke and precipitated five travelers
into the gulf below (Wilder 5). Peruvians were greatly astonished by the bridge collapse because the

Drug Testing and Ethics Essay
Camille Dickinson Business Ethics Module 5 November 27th 2010 Is drug testing an unwarranted
invasion of employee privacy? Which is more important getting drugs out of the workplace or
protecting the privacy of the employee? What about other health threatening activities, i.e. smoking
outside of working hours, unprotected sex, etc. Should employers be able to question or test
employees or potential employees about these activities? Both of these scenarios are tricky ones. On
the one hand, any employer would want to get drugs out of the workplace. On the other hand you don

My husband in his decision to fire Bruce was also acting partially from an egoist point of view since
an unemployed Bruce meant a sober Bruce which meant no trips to the ER which meant that my
husband wouldn t have to deal with a cursing, screaming, bloody drunk Bruce. At the same time he
was also acting from Kant s theory which states that Only when we act from a sense of duty does our
action have moral worth (Shaw amp; Barry, 2010 p69). My husband felt that it was his duty as a
member of the medical profession, not to enable a habit that could possibly cause harm to an

that drug testing should not be used. In researching this paper I was surprised to learn how many over

identifying search engine keywords in the HTML title tag, meta description tag, and header tags.
However, before a web developer can start optimizing his site for a certain keyword or phrase, he
needs to understand what keywords are the best fit for his business. To do so, a web developer may
use a keyword search tool such as Google AdWords, that provide targeted keywords that are relevant
to a web developer s audience, are pulling in a good amount of search traffic, and are not too difficult
to rank. After a web developer has researched and selected which keywords would best match his web
page, he must then start incorporating those keywords into important parts of the webpage. HTML
titles have always been and remain the most important HTML signal that search engines use to
understand what a page is about. Unique, descriptive titles are the most successful in being searched.
The meta description tag, one of the oldest supported HTML elements, allows you to suggest how you
d like your pages to be described in

Chapter 11 Summary
Part Three focuses on the steps a leader should take to effectively achieve change. Chapter Eight gives
an overview of how ones interpretation can lead to disagreements, disappointments, and resistance to
change. Chapter Nine provides tools that will encourage harmony and practices that will allow leaders
to depersonalize situations. Chapter Ten explains how to build relationships by creating allies and
staying connected the opposition. Chapter Eleven teaches the leader to control the temperature when
conflict arises and delegate when necessary. Chapter Twelve focuses on creating an environment of
independent judgment and nurturing a space to grow future leaders.
Chapter Eight pushes the leader to see issues as systemic rather than personal(A. G. Ronald Heifetz
2009) . How people interpret situations in an organization must change to promote effective
leadership. This chapter gives us signs of unproductive interpretation. For example, in table 8 1, a
negative comment is made about the leadership in the company. The comment is geared toward the
leadership and not the organizations vision (A. G. Ronald Heifetz 2009) . The example further gives
an alternative way to view the concerns of the people. The alternative is to ask questions that will
promote a positive outcome and change their thought process. ... Show more content on

However, here it shares the art of building an adaptive culture in an organization. Building blocks such
as being proactive and not reactive, learning to listen without having an answer prepared for delivery,

leader it is wise to work toward making yourself dispensable (A. G. Ronald Heifetz 2009) .

In a brightly lit corner of St Peter s Basilica, sitting behind a clear panel of glass, is Michelangelo s
Pietà. A marble white sculpture of the Mother Mary, her eyes downcast, gazes at her Son who lies
dead across her lap. She seems both devastated and deep in thought. She is young and beautiful, in
line with the old belief that a perfect soul meant a perfect outward appearance (Smart 122). She is
famous and celebrated, and is visited by Christians from every nation.

The Church became less of a holy symbol of God s presence on earth, and more of a machine to help
ambitious men up the ladder of political power and influence (Murray Michelangelo 7). The Age of
Enlightenment changed the medieval time s thirst for God to a thirst for knowledge and science
(Gardner 396).
In present times, the influence of the Church continues to decline. The 21st century is seeing the most
intense attacks on belief in God in general and the Roman Catholic Church in particular. (Tiglao
A13)This is not at all helped by the countless scandals endured by the Vatican today. Well known
examples include their opposition to stem cell research (zu Eltz et al. 211) and sex abuse cases
involving priests. The controversy of sexually abusive priests has proven so outrageous that many
have demanded the dismissal of countless Church officials and even Pope Benedict XVI himself (
Pope undeterred by abuse scandal, reform calls 8).
Religion has endured a rocky road over the course of history, and so has art. Indeed it has evolved
from the solemn themes of medieval art, to the romantic, whimsical mood of Renaissance art, to the
shock value of contemporary art.
The Medieval times has its share of famous art styles, two of the most significant being Byzantine and
Gothic. The Byzantine era of art was one of the Western world s longest and most unique. It was best

Cardiomyopathy, Raynaud s and Perfusion
Adequate perfusion supplies the entire body with necessary oxygen and nutrients to sustain life. The
process of oxygenation and perfusion can be affected by a multitude of factors. A few examples are, a
decreased oxygen carrying capacity, hypovolemia, neuromuscular disease, central nervous system
alterations and chronic diseases (Potter, Perry, Stockert, Hall, 2013, p. 826). Two specific examples of
conditions affecting perfusion are cardiomyopathy and Raynaud s phenomenon.

This causes the ventricles to become resistant to filling and thus demand high filling pressures to

inability to tolerate exercise, and an overall feeling of exhaustion (Kupper Mitchell, p. 829). These
manifestations often occur because the ventricular filling is compromised since the heart cannot
increase CO by increasing the heart rate alone (Kupper Mitchell, 2014, p.

Hollywood And Its Commercial Aesthetic
Hollywood cinema is primarily subjected to telling stories. The inclination of Hollywood narratives
comes not just from good chronicles but from good story telling. The following essay will discuss
Hollywood s commercial aesthetic as applied to storytelling, expand on the characteristics of the
principles of classical film narration and evaluate alternative modes of narration and other deviations
from the classical mode. a) Hollywood s commercial aesthetic as applied to storytelling: According to
Richard Maltby (2003) commercial aesthetic is used to describe Hollywood s aesthetics system,
driven as it is by the existence of entertainment as a commercial commodity. From this perspective,
Hollywood s most profound significance lies in its ability to turn pleasure into a product we can buy.
An understanding of Hollywood s commercial aesthetic requires a consideration of both the formal
conventions of Hollywood movies and the external social and cultural pressures that regulate movies
as products of a system of mass production and distribution (pp. 580 581). Each Hollywood movie is
best implicated as an opportunist congregation of unalike elements as reasoned out by Maltby. In
order to best mollify the (perceived) market place at a particular point in time these rudiments are
transported together by producers and production companies. Furthermore, Maltby debates that this
may result in movies which are dogged by competing (and perhaps contradictory) impulses and it

food options provided for the college students. However, not all of the food choices are healthy. For
example, food in Milligan s cafeteria is cooked in fats and served greasy to the students. There are not
a lot of healthy options in the cafeteria to choose from. Every day the salad bar is set out for students
as a healthy side or meal, however the ingredients are not always fresh. Sometimes the lettuce

Repressing Words In Maya Angelou s Graduation Day
You can not do it. You are not good enough. How often have these words torn down a person s self
esteem and confidence. How often have these words stood in the way of a person s success, paralyzing
that person in fear or disappointment. Maya Angelou knew this feeling well in her story, Graduation
Day. The excitement and pride of graduating is taken away by one man s words. These words lead the
audience to believe that they are worthless. However, repressive words only possess power when
allowed.
It is unquestioned that repressing words affect how a person views him or herself. Words can go as far
as to change the whole tone of a day. Angelou recounts the day with vivid details of laughter, pride,
and joy. However, these feelings are replaced within moments, when one man s speech reminds the
people of their oppression. Repressing words take control when the subject of attack forgets his or her
worth. This stance is proven on page 186 of Graduation Day. Angelou states, The man s dead words
fell like bricks around the auditorium... the proud graduating class of 1940 had dropped their heads.
Donleavy had exposed us. The entire auditorium allowed themselves to be subjected to the beliefs of
one man, allowing themselves to reform to what the speaker was claiming. Often words such as these
leave a person feeling defenseless. It was brutal to be young and already trained to sit quietly and
listen to charges brought against my color with no chance at defense. Colored people trained at a
young age, believed that their race stood no chance at equality. While repressive words have power,
that power is dependent upon the individual.
It does not have to stay that way. When faced with repression, an individual has two choices. It is
typical for a person to allow those words to become their reality. Angelou began to define her race as
worthless. She conformed to the ideas of others, stirring up feelings of hatred. She goes as far to say,
We were an abomination. All of us (Angelou, 2014, p.186 ). The power of repression is once again
evident. While not as popular, there is a second choice. This choice is demonstrated when a person
does not allow words of repression to define their worth. This choice

Every black male s plight in America can be regarded as a provider for his family. However, society
does not afford black males the benefit of feeling secure about providing for their families. It can be

opportunities of his white counterparts. Walter does not have control over his own responsibilities.
Therefore, if he was given all the resources needed to provide his family his poor judgement and lack
of business sense would create further stress on the family. Ruth, Mama, and his sister Beanetha attack
him from every angle about his doubtful ideals. Ironically, those ideals are what Walter needs to shape

However, since hair is typically made up of the protein, Keratin, it is typically harder to extract DNA
from hair. In order to extract DNA from hair it is important to use the follicle of the hair. DNA is
easily found in the root and follicle of the hair because it is connected to the blood stream (Heywood,
21 22). When attempting to extract the DNA from the hair, forensics attempt to wash out all of the
protein, therefore, the only thing left is the pure DNA sample. However, there is not a 100% chance
that protein will be washed out completely, meaning that there is a chance that DNA could be
contaminated, in other words the DNA would be hard to read and find a yield. In addition, due to this
fact the average success rate of yielding DNA from hair is 60 70% ( A Simple Method of Genomic
DNA Extraction from Human Samples for PCR RFLP Analysis ). However, unlike hair cells, cheek
cells are much simpler to extract DNA from. This is due to the fact that the tissue inside of your
mouth, contains a lot of available DNA when the area is shedded (Smith, 43). When the popsicle stick
is rubbed along the tissue it allows for cells to be shedded, therefore it is easy to obtain the cells, when
one rinses saline buffer inside of the mouth and spits back into a microcentrifuge tube (Smith,

Essay about Film Versions of Shakespeare Comedies
Film Versions of Shakespeare Comedies
Shakespearean plays are complex, intricate pieces of work in which a diverse range of interpretations
and readings can be made. This is particularly true of his comedies, where the light hearted humour is
often offset by darker, more serious undertones. In adapting these comedies it is for the director in the
cinematic context to decide how to interpret the play and which elements are privileged and which are
suppressed. This variance in interpretation is exemplified in comparing two of the more recent
cinematic adaptations of Shakespeare s comedies, Trevor Nunn s Twelfth Night and Kenneth Branagh
s A Much Ado About Nothing [ Much Ado ]. Although both films can to an extent be seen as ... Show

This action is the first imperative step that leads to the undoing of several characters, primarily

his demise .
Nunn s adaptation of Feste is not dissimilar to Malvolio with his interpretation of the professional
clown proving persuasive because the fool presents wise insights into the complicated web of love that
many principal characters become entwined with. His ability to suggest that love is a game, that lovers
often love to love, and that love can be almost blind, are important themes to the attraction and
comedy of the film. However Nunn utilises Feste above the scope of the comedic, with his poignant
insights reminding the audience that this film is in fact dealing with serious issues and at times, the
deeper, disturbing, side of love. In Ben Kingsley s moving performance, Feste becomes an outsider as
a man who lives alone away from Olivia s house yet somehow witnesses all that occurs amongst the
characters and provides some telling insights. This is illustrated when he shows Olivia why take away
the fool could mean take away the lady, arguing not only to save his job but also out of a deep
compassion for Olivia s grief over her brother s death, and a desire to show why she need not commit

The first law states that an object in motion tends to stay in motion unless an external force is applied

Nelson Mandela Analysis
The relationship that develops between Nelson Mandela and Francois Pienaar in the movie Invictus
suggests how crucial of a role they play as leaders to the people of South Africa. Even though, Pienaar
is white and Mandela is black, they both work towards uniting a divided nation despite their
differences. Regarding Nelson Mandela, he uses his voice and presidential power to find a way in
which he can unite the whites and blacks of South Africa. When he discovers that sports, particularly
rugby, can be used as a method to unite the people of South Africa to cheer for one team despite how
divided its people may be, it signifies how influential and wise of a leader he is to the people of South
Africa. This is so inspiring for me because he found an interest that both the whites and blacks of
South Africa have in common that will help bridge the gap between them despite their troubled history
with each other. Some characteristics of Mandela that indicate how influential of a leader he became
for the people of South Africa is because of his transparence, empathy, courtesy, and humility.
Mandela served as such a vital figure as a leader in uniting South Africa through his devotion to the
rugby team. He understood how influential this team was to the entire nation, and he made every
effort to establish a close relationship with the team by frequently meeting and speaking with the
players and attending their games. Due to his valiant efforts, he did everything he could to help inspire
the team by investing so much time into their success as a leader to the point where they felt that they
would have failed the entire nation had they not won the World Cup. Now, this surge of success
among the rugby team was ignited by the captain of the team himself, Francois Pienaar. Francois
Pienaar developed into a very crucial leader for not only the South African rugby team, but for the
people of South Africa. He not only led the rugby team to success on the field, but due to his close
relationship with Mandela he was able to inspire and motivate his teammates towards winning the

Classroom Curriculum And Schools Provide Greater...
Play is fundamental to healthy cognitive, intellectual, emotional and social development. It is so
important to optimal child development that play has been recognized by the United Nations High
Commission for Human Rights as a right of every child. However, with today s hurried and pressured
lifestyles children may not be receiving the full benefits of play. With declining opportunities for
children to experience free play, it is imperative that classroom curriculum and schools provide greater
opportunities for children to play. Encouraging children to learn through play promotes a well rounded
and healthy child development of social emotional behavior, language skills, cognition, and problem
solving skills. In the words of Maria Montessori, play is the work of the child .
Play is an integral part of many mammalian s development. Like human children, most young
mammals devote a significant amount of time and energy playing together, and social play is fun. Play
is not a meaningless activity; it is vital to the development of mental and behavioral flexibility, social
and intellectual proficiency and maintaining social unity. Social play, or rough and tumble play, is the

Doris Lessing, the author of Through the Tunnel, and Sherman Alexie, the author of What You Pawn I Will Redeem, both have symbols that encourage the main characters to achieve their goal. The story Through the Tunnel is about a young boy named Jerry and his mother going on vacation to a beach resort that they have previously visited. The villa they are staying at consist of two beaches. The safe, crowded beach is where Jerry s mother goes and the wild Rocky Bay is where Jerry ends up spending most of his time. While Jerry swims in the water at the wild bay, he sees a group of boys diving into the water. Jerry knew right when he saw them, he wanted to be just like them. The Frog And The Scorpion Story In The Crying Game The Frog and the Scorpion story in the Crying game movie Early, in the Crying Game movie by Neil Jordan, Jodi starts telling Fergus a story about two kinds of people in the world, Those who give and those who take (22.24). Jodi says this at a moment when he is not only kidnap but also hungry. He knows that by telling this story he can make Fergus feed him. Once Jodi gets his food, he persuades Fergus into taking off his hood by continuing the story. The story is about a frog who helps cross the river, and a scorpion who stink even when he was receiving help. By using the story of the Frog and scorpion, the Crying game movie suggests that we are born in an unchangeable, undeniable and certain way that we must embrace because it is part of our nature. However, I claim that the movie does not support the learning of the fable because the characters make their own decisions based on factors as personality, survival, etc. the story of the frog and scorpion is a manipulative tactic used by Jodi to get what he needs. As his life is at risk, he decides to persuade Fergus with his charisma, charming personality, jokes, compliments and ultimately, the fable. Jodi is aware that in order to make his way out, he has to make sure that Fergus believes that he is denying his nature with his wrongdoing. However, Jodi knows better than anyone else that Fergus has the power to choose whatever he wants to do but he persuades him into believing that he cannot. The real intention for using ... • 6. The Theoretical Basis Of Congestion Costs 2.2 Theoretical basis of congestion costs (diseconomies) One by product of agglomeration is congestion, which arise as economic agents compete for limited land, limited output markets, and limited fixed public infrastructure such as highways and communication facilities. Other negative consequences of agglomeration such as environmental pollution, noise, and high crime rates may also occur. In general, congestion externalities originate from the difference between private and social costs. The literature on optimal city size suggests that households and firms choose to locate in a city by evaluating the prevailing average social costs (AC) such as local taxes or commuting/transport costs in the city, but ignoring the increased social costs their arrivals generate for the whole urban population (Alonso 1971; Richardson 1972; Mills and De Ferranti 1971). Therefore, the average social cost would usually be lower than the marginal social cost (MC) born by the city as a whole (Alonso 1971; Richardson 1972; Mills and De Ferranti 1971). Firms and residents would continue to move into the city as long as marginal benefits, as represented by marginal value of outputs (MP) in the city, exceed the marginal social cost plus the opportunity cost of moving (MP MC + opportunity cost for moving) (Alonso 1971; Richardson 1972). The result is that cities would grow to a size that is more congested than the optimal size for maximizing urban production, that size being the point where the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Human comfort is affected by thermal factors; physical factors and personal factors. Another factor that can affect human comfort is sound of the environment around them. The final factor that affects the human comfort is the visual of the room and the light intensity. There are ways to measure the physical factors that affect human thermal comfort, the sound comfort and the visual comfort. Thermal Factors The average temperature inside a building is 19 21 degrees and outside is 1 degrees, but there are two different thermal factors that affect the temperature of the room and human comfort; they are physical and personal factors. The physical factors include; air temperature, mean radiation temperature, relative humidity and air velocity. The air temperature inside of a building will change depending on the temperature outside the building and the k values of the materials used to build the walls and insulation. K values are the values that all materials have which shows how good insulators the materials are, the lower the k value the more affective the materials are at retaining heat. Vagus Nerve Stimulation This article discusses how an electrical shock given to a nerve that travels from the brainstem to all the organs, called the vagus nerve, can help to stop autoimmune diseases. In the past, stimulation of the nerve was used to treat epilepsy and depression. In 1998, a neurosurgeon by the name of Kevin Tracy at the Feinstein Institute for Medical Research found that the stimulation of the vagus nerve in rats greatly reduced the production of TNF a which is a protein that helps the process of inflammation. Basically, when this nerve is stimulated, it releases increased noradrenaline in the spleen to immune T cells. In turn, the T cells release more acetylcholine to the macrophages. Last, these macrophage release less of the pro inflammatory TNF a. To carry on Tracy s work, Akiko Nakai at the Osaka University in Japan found that nerve stimulation limited what T cells could do in the bloodstream in the process of inflammation. Over ... Learning can take place in many different forms (reading, writing, speaking, listening, excellency in a particular skill, etc.) and settings, generalizing from one content area to another. It also occurs at varying rates across a diverse spectrum of populations and can be influenced by any number of factors including personalities, perceived abilities, societal values and environment. Some individuals acquire information best in formal settings, like the direct instruction or supports found in a classroom, while others may benefit more from informal instruction, learning incidentally from their surroundings. Throughout the course of history, there have been many perspectives regarding education and the manner in which individuals learn best. I will primarily focus on the educational perspective of the Social Learning Theory and briefly discuss its history as well as its prominent figures, components, and implications in regard to language and literacy both inside and outside of the classroom. In 1954 Julian B. Rotter developed the Social Learning Theory that gravitated away from Freud s psychoanalysis and Skinner s behaviorism that focused on behavior rather than intrinsic thought. Over the years Walt Disney came out with family friendly movies such as, Sleeping Beauty (1959), Pocahontas (1995), Aladdin (1992), and Cinderella (1950). Walt Disney influenced many people in many ways with his work. The critic Robert Hughes credited him with inventing Pop art. In fact, by 1918, nearly three million women were employed in the textile, food, and war industries. Many restrictions on women s participation in these industries were torn down during World War 1. Women slowly started gaining more social responsibilities. They started working as streetcar conductors and radio operators; they also worked in logging camps and steel mills. During the war, they not only had to support their households, but also the war effort. After the war, their labor was far from over. It was now more socially acceptable to continue working. In addition, many men died in the war and women had to work single handedly to support their family. The public view of war changed after World War 1. Before the war, the public had seen war as it was in the 1800s with large armies attacking each other in open fields in battles that rarely lasted for more than a day. However, new technology and tactics made warfare much more gruesome. One tactic became known as trench warfare. When the British released a realistic film about the Battle of the Somme, a battle fought by Britain and France against Germany, the public was shocked. Soldiers no longer participated in distinct battles; they could be attacked at any time of day. This constant state of fear had obvious psychological effects. The public became disillusioned about war due to the large body counts as well. Pacifism became more popular as a result. The growth of independence movements was another important effect of the war. The inclination of Hollywood narratives comes not just from good chronicles but from good story telling. The following essay will discuss Hollywood s commercial aesthetic as applied to storytelling, expand on the characteristics of the principles of classical film narration and evaluate alternative modes of narration and other deviations from the classical mode. a) Hollywood s commercial aesthetic as applied to storytelling: According to Richard Maltby (2003) commercial aesthetic is used to describe Hollywood s aesthetics system, driven as it is by the existence of entertainment as a commercial commodity. From this perspective, Hollywood s most profound significance lies in its ability to turn pleasure into a product we can buy. An understanding of Hollywood s commercial aesthetic requires a consideration of both the formal conventions of Hollywood movies and the external social and cultural pressures that regulate movies as products of a system of mass production and distribution (pp. 580 581). • 26. Repressing Words In Maya Angelou s Graduation Day You can not do it. You are not good enough. How often have these words torn down a person s self esteem and confidence. How often have these words stood in the way of a person s success, paralyzing that person in fear or disappointment. Maya Angelou knew this feeling well in her story, Graduation Day. The excitement and pride of graduating is taken away by one man s words. These words lead the audience to believe that they are worthless. However, repressive words only possess power when allowed. It is unquestioned that repressing words affect how a person views him or herself. Words can go as far as to change the whole tone of a day. Angelou recounts the day with vivid details of laughter, pride, and joy. However, these feelings are replaced within moments, when one man s speech reminds the people of their oppression. Repressing words take control when the subject of attack forgets his or her worth. This stance is proven on page 186 of Graduation Day. Angelou states, The man s dead words fell like bricks around the auditorium... the proud graduating class of 1940 had dropped their heads. Donleavy had exposed us. The entire auditorium allowed themselves to be subjected to the beliefs of one man, allowing themselves to reform to what the speaker was claiming. Often words such as these leave a person feeling defenseless. It was brutal to be young and already trained to sit quietly and listen to charges brought against my color with no chance at defense. Colored people trained at a young age, believed that their race stood no chance at equality. While repressive words have power, that power is dependent upon the individual. It does not have to stay that way. When faced with repression, an individual has two choices. It is typical for a person to allow those words to become their reality. Angelou began to define her race as worthless. She conformed to the ideas of others, stirring up feelings of hatred. She goes as far to say, We were an abomination. All of us (Angelou, 2014, p.186 ). The power of repression is once again evident. While not as popular, there is a second choice. This choice is demonstrated when a person does not allow words of repression to define their worth. This choice ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Walter Lee Younger is a man who is frustrated with his current position in life, and every disappointment he has encountered thus far. Although he tries to be a loving man, sometimes he does not know how to show the idea of love, Sometimes...sometimes...I don t even know how to try (Hansberry 89). His position in life can be regarded as symbolic of every black male struggling to provide for his family by any means necessary. Although Walter has a job, it seems inadequate for his survival. However, society does not afford black males the benefit of feeling secure about providing for their families. It can be easy for anyone to criticize society and place the blame on America for not affording Walter the opportunities of his white counterparts. Walter does not have control over his own responsibilities. Therefore, if he was given all the resources needed to provide his family his poor judgement and lack of business sense would create further stress on the family. Ruth, Mama, and his sister Beanetha attack him from every angle about his doubtful ideals. Ironically, those ideals are what Walter needs to shape and justify his manhood. Without ideals and proper resources to obtain them, a man s existence can be regarded as insignificannot . There are many obstacles in the way of Walter s dream of opening a liquor store, as he tries to explain to his wife, Ruth, about what he has to do, Baby, don t nothing happen for you in this world ‘less you pay somebody off! Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... However, since hair is typically made up of the protein, Keratin, it is typically harder to extract DNA from hair. In order to extract DNA from hair it is important to use the follicle of the hair. DNA is easily found in the root and follicle of the hair because it is connected to the blood stream (Heywood, 21 22). When attempting to extract the DNA from the hair, forensics attempt to wash out all of the protein, therefore, the only thing left is the pure DNA sample. However, there is not a 100% chance that protein will be washed out completely, meaning that there is a chance that DNA could be contaminated, in other words the DNA would be hard to read and find a yield. In addition, due to this fact the average success rate of yielding DNA from hair is 60 70% ( A Simple Method of Genomic DNA Extraction from Human Samples for PCR RFLP Analysis ). However, unlike hair cells, cheek cells are much simpler to extract DNA from. This is due to the fact that the tissue inside of your mouth, contains a lot of available DNA when the area is shedded (Smith, 43). When the popsicle stick is rubbed along the tissue it allows for cells to be shedded, therefore it is easy to obtain the cells, when one rinses saline buffer inside of the mouth and spits back into a microcentrifuge tube (Smith, ... Essay about Film Versions of Shakespeare Comedies Film Versions of Shakespeare Comedies Shakespearean plays are complex, intricate pieces of work in which a diverse range of interpretations and readings can be made. This is particularly true of his comedies, where the light hearted humour is often offset by darker, more serious undertones. In adapting these comedies it is for the director in the cinematic context to decide how to interpret the play and which elements are privileged and which are suppressed. This variance in interpretation is exemplified in comparing two of the more recent cinematic adaptations of Shakespeare s comedies, Trevor Nunn s Twelfth Night and Kenneth Branagh s A Much Ado About Nothing [ Much Ado ]. This action is the first imperative step that leads to the undoing of several characters, primarily Malvolio. It is essentially Malvolio s ultimate narcissism that allows the other characters to easily plot his demise . Nunn s adaptation of Feste is not dissimilar to Malvolio with his interpretation of the professional clown proving persuasive because the fool presents wise insights into the complicated web of love that many principal characters become entwined with. His ability to suggest that love is a game, that lovers often love to love, and that love can be almost blind, are important themes to the attraction and comedy of the film. However Nunn utilises Feste above the scope of the comedic, with his poignant insights reminding the audience that this film is in fact dealing with serious issues and at times, the deeper, disturbing, side of love. In Ben Kingsley s moving performance, Feste becomes an outsider as a man who lives alone away from Olivia s house yet somehow witnesses all that occurs amongst the characters and provides some telling insights. This is illustrated when he shows Olivia why take away the fool could mean take away the lady, arguing not only to save his job but also out of a deep compassion for Olivia s grief over her brother s death, and a desire to show why she need not commit ... Now this applies to space craft when a rocket sits until being lifted up once the throttle of the engine is released (NASA). This is also because of aerodynamics, developed George Cayley. • 37. Nelson Mandela Analysis The relationship that develops between Nelson Mandela and Francois Pienaar in the movie Invictus suggests how crucial of a role they play as leaders to the people of South Africa. Even though, Pienaar is white and Mandela is black, they both work towards uniting a divided nation despite their differences. Regarding Nelson Mandela, he uses his voice and presidential power to find a way in which he can unite the whites and blacks of South Africa. When he discovers that sports, particularly rugby, can be used as a method to unite the people of South Africa to cheer for one team despite how divided its people may be, it signifies how influential and wise of a leader he is to the people of South Africa. This is so inspiring for me because he found an interest that both the whites and blacks of South Africa have in common that will help bridge the gap between them despite their troubled history with each other. Some characteristics of Mandela that indicate how influential of a leader he became for the people of South Africa is because of his transparence, empathy, courtesy, and humility. Mandela served as such a vital figure as a leader in uniting South Africa through his devotion to the rugby team. He understood how influential this team was to the entire nation, and he made every effort to establish a close relationship with the team by frequently meeting and speaking with the players and attending their games. Due to his valiant efforts, he did everything he could to help inspire the team by investing so much time into their success as a leader to the point where they felt that they would have failed the entire nation had they not won the World Cup. Now, this surge of success among the rugby team was ignited by the captain of the team himself, Francois Pienaar. Francois Pienaar developed into a very crucial leader for not only the South African rugby team, but for the people of South Africa. He not only led the rugby team to success on the field, but due to his close relationship with Mandela he was able to inspire and motivate his teammates towards winning the World Cup. It is so important to optimal child development that play has been recognized by the United Nations High Commission for Human Rights as a right of every child. However, with today s hurried and pressured lifestyles children may not be receiving the full benefits of play. With declining opportunities for children to experience free play, it is imperative that classroom curriculum and schools provide greater opportunities for children to play. Encouraging children to learn through play promotes a well rounded and healthy child development of social emotional behavior, language skills, cognition, and problem solving skills. Regardless of it being written sixty years after the Revolution, the spirit of the Revolution was still alive throughout Europe. In his book, Dickens shares his thoughts about poverty, the inequality between social classes, along with the inhumane violence that resulted from these things. Dickens is also able to connect with his readers through many themes throughout A Tale of Two Cities. However, one important theme is man s inhumanity towards fellow man. One specific character is the Marquis St. Evrémonde, a stone hearted aristocrat with no morals. With the Marquis character, Charles Dickens expresses how man s inhumanity towards man will bring horrific consequences when the Marquis kills Gaspard s son, frames Charles Darnay for treason, and abuses Madame Defarge s family. In the first scene, the Marquis inhumanity is shown by the way he deals with the murder of Gaspard s son. While at a reception to greet the Monseigneur in St. Antoine, the Monseigneur fails to greet the Marquis. Marquis Evrémonde curses him and angrily sets off to leave the town.
