Keeping Orca Whales in Captivity Should Be Banned Essay
For many years, we ve been going to such places like, SeaWorld, and Six Flags, to see vast
animals, like Orcas, also known as the killer whale, which we wouldn t normally see out in the
wild. Orcas have been around for millions of years; it s known to be one of the smartest
mammals, closest to humans. Since of their friendliness, people have taken advantage of them.
For the past sixty years people have brought these massive creatures into their aquariums to make
profit out of it, but never thought about their lives. What if you were kept in a cage for years, and
was pushed to do such activities, you wouldn t do in your normal life. While being in captivities,
killer whales are forced to do plentiful tricks, which they normally wouldn t do... Show more

Tillikum grabbed her and dragged her into the water, and let her suffer to death, eventually she
did. After seeing these incidents occur, from time to time, people have urged to ban SeaWorld
from doing these activities. Keeping them activities will create more problems and will loose
such person like Dawn, who loved and cared for the animal, but they cannot be trusted. That is
why they are called Killer whales. People say that keeping orca s in captivities is not a problem,
yet they do not realize that, orcas are also human beings. There are several reasons, why keeping
these thirty feet long creatures, in captivities is a problem. One of them, which are the tank,
which is too small, compared to ocean where they can swim freely. One the other side, in
captivities, the space is limited. Comparatively, to how they swim out in the wild orcas can
swim up to 100 miles per day a phenomenal amount, in comparison to the exercise they receive in
captivity (Cronin). While being in captivity, orca has to keep swimming in circles or floats. Out
In the wild, killer whales typically travel in pods of between five and 30 (Melissa). In captivities
there are only few whales, so it makes them more aggressive toward one another. This sometimes
can be lead to danger by killing each other for fighting to gain power of the tank. There are several
other reasons, why orcas

Elijah Rylson Case Study
Elijah Rylson was born October 26th, 1999. His parents were Elijah Rylson Sr. and Catherine

after his wife s death, Elijah Sr. had gone into deep clinical depression from the passing of his

Understanding Labor Relations And Collective Bargaining
Understanding Labor Relations and Collective Bargaining In the video, Understanding Labor
Relations and Collective Bargaining , Donald Carty, CEO of American Airlines at that time,
expresses the disappointment of the many executives in a union environment face in regards to
labor costs. Shortly after this video, Mr. Carty had announced executive retention bonuses and
pension protection right after most union members had already voted to accept over $1 billion
worth of wage and benefit concessions (Zellner, 2003). Needless to say, this didn t brief too well
to the point that two of the three unions were calling for new votes (Zellner, 2003). Mr. Carty
claimed that it was merely to keep the company out of bankruptcy. So, if the labor costs were part
of American Airlines restructuring before the contract negotiations as Mr. Carty had stated, what
other preparations would have the company took prior to the negotiation process? What federal
government agencies were involved in the labor relations? And what type of response would be
expected from the unions that represent American Airlines employees after comments such as the
ones Mr. Carty stated? Preparations Prior to a Negotiation Process Preparation for any negotiation
should start with a number of steps designed to develop your negotiating strategy (Lynn, 2002). The
company should have reviewed union agendas from previous negotiations, if there were any. This
would have allowed them to analyze arguments made by both

Howard Zinn s The United States
Howard Zinn s A People s History of the United States has been highly influential since its initial
publication in 1980. It spawned adaptations for young readers (a two volume adaptation by
Rebecca Stefoff: A Young People s History of the United States) and The People Speak, a History
Channel documentary based on Zinn s work. Zinn himself was until his death in 2010 a heroic
figure to many, especially for this book and for his ongoing teaching and social activism, which
were directly related.
A People s History of the United States was praised from the moment it appeared on shelves. A
1980 Library Journal review called it brilliant and moving and said it was well designed to
appeal to both historians and general readers. However, the volume was not without its criticisms.
Some of these critiques align with party lines. Roger Kimball s review in the conservative
National Review labeled Zinn a Professor of contempt and dismissed the work as the ultimate in
anti American history, a patchwork of leftist clichГ©s. Oscar Handlin s review for The American
Scholar dismissed both Zinn s approach to history and the actual content of the work, citing a
number of Zinn s claims as fallacious.
Some criticisms of the work carried more intellectual weight and addressed the quality of Zinn s
reasoning directly. Bruce Kuklick s review of the book for The Nation suggested that A People s
History of the United States was essentially a textbook for the left, and as such it

Essay True North Book Review
Destiny, with credit to Professor Nettifee brought the book True North: Discover Your Authentic
Leadership into my life and I want to bring it into the lives of others. More specifically those
who may believe they weren t born with the characteristics or traits to become a leader or those
who have not found their passion or purpose in life; their True North. The book, written by Bill
George and co author Peter Sims, compiles a series of interviews with 125 managers from
Howard Schultz of Starbuck s to Dan Vasella of Novartis. The interviewees guide readers through
their journey to become the leaders they are today; discussing their failures, successes, obstacles,
personal tragedies and triumphs. The stories of each manager prove the True... Show more content

They temporarily lose sight of what is really important by focusing on themselves; personal success
vs. team success. They can get back on the path towards authentic leadership by realizing leadership
is not about themselves, it is about empowering others.
Transformation from I to We This transformation occurs in Phase II of the leadership development.
This is when we realize that leadership is not about giving subordinates directions and orders to
follow. It is about empowering people to grow to their fullest potentials.
Part II: Discover Your Authentic Leadership
Knowing your Authentic Self
The book teaches the important of being self aware in order to choose the right role for you, be
comfortable in your own skin, act consistently in different situations, gain trust of others, build
strong relationships, and to know your strengths and weaknesses. Without self awareness, we
would be easily thrown off our True North path. The book provides a method for finding your true
self called Peeling Back the Onion. The process begins with looking at your outer layers such as
body language, attire, appearance and leadership style and then goes deeper to strengths,
weaknesses, motivations values and then to understanding your life story, vulnerabilities, etc and
then finally to your authentic self. See Exhibit 2 in the Appendices.

Using Population Control to Achieve Environmental...
Environmental sustainability is when a person, community or area is able to meet the needs of the
present, without compromising the needs of the future. Overconsumption will lead to hardship in
the future, and possibly to the destruction of the planet s finite resources; and if we continue using
our resources as at current rates, which have been estimated to be 4 planets worth of resources, this
will be inevitable. Populations are all the inhabitants of a specific area/country and this population
can be controlled in various methods such as population policies, like the ones in China, Kerala
and France; as well as control via migration by putting on limits.
A population control method that has achieve environmental sustainability is ... Show more content

On the other hand, Canada has a fairly low population density of just 3.75 people per square
kilometer and with high resources, Canada is environmentally sustainable; some even say that
Canada is under populated and therefore Canada is lenient on in migration.
Similarly to this, Thomas Malthus (1766 1834) had the theory that when population overshoots a
certain point (usually food production) there will be catastrophic effects. The club of Rome, in
1968 published a report called the limit of growth , which stated that population growth will lead to
an increase in food demand and this will eventually lead to resource exhaustion, which is obviously
not environmentally sustainable. To prevent resource exhaustion, the Club of Rome decided that
we have to regulate population growth and reduce fertility and that is what China s One Child
Policy, and Kerala s non enforced population policy was aiming to do. Similarly, the anti
Malthusianist Ester Boserup was a resource optimist, with research based on studies of shifting
cultivation. Her hypothesis was that population growth would result in an increase demand for food
and to meet this demand, improved agriculture productivity would be needed. A higher agricultural
productivity means an increase in methods of agriculture like the slash and burn technique, which
often are not environmentally sustainable at all.
All these population / resource theories

The Pros And Cons Of The Gold Standard
The gold standard uses gold directly or indirectly as money. In a pure gold standard, gold is used
in transactions, with all prices expressed in terms of the amount of gold needed for purchase.
Gold may be mint into coins so that its purity and weight will be certified by an authority since
gold can be alloy (mixed with other metals), and its weight is impossible to determine without
proper scales. Such coins can function as a unit of account. A monetary system can also be
regarded as a gold standardif representations of gold are used in exchange. For example, paper
notes can be part of a gold standard if a person can use them to claim gold. However, the word
claim can be vague. Normally, people think of paper currency as part of a gold standard if the notes
are backed by gold. Backing, however, may be largely irrelevant. For paper to represent gold, it
must be regarded as equivalent to a given quantity and purity of gold. Here, domestic currency is
freely convertible to gold.
The gold standard was a commitment by participating countries to fix the prices of their domestic
currencies in terms of a specified amount of gold. National money and other forms of money (bank

Countries started abandoning the gold standard by reducing the amount of gold backing their
currency so that they could increase the money supply to stimulate their economies. When some of
the countries abandoned the gold standard, then it just collapsed, for it was a system that could not
work unless all of the trading countries agreed to it. The exit from the gold standard afforded
countries more leeway to stimulate their economies, as it gave them back their monetary autonomy
and allowed them to depreciate their exchange rates. But, at the same time, the depreciation in
exiting countries increased the difficulties for countries with an exchange rate that was still tied to
gold and consequently pushed them towards leaving the gold standard as

Dulce Et Decorum Est Context Essay
The context of poetry is important because it provides readers a background of the writing before
allowing them to understand, appreciate, and analyze the poems. War poems, for instance, are
often filled with both historical context and social context especially Dulce et Decorum Est by
Wilfred Owen, an english poet and soldier of the First World War. The use of literary devices,
such as imagery, tone, alliteration, and allusion; as well as personal experience on the battlefield, is
why the poem Dulce et Decorum Estby Wilfred Owen demonstrates the contexts of World War I
and anti war ideology successfully.
After teaching in France for two years, Owen returned to England in 1915 to enlist in the Artists
Rifles, a regiment of the British Army Reserve, at the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Owen recalls his group being physically and mentally overwhelmed by the toil of battle in the
first stanza of the poem using illustrative similes and alliteration, Bent Double, like old beggars
under sacks, / Knock Kneed, coughing like hags, we cursed through the sludge, that presents a
scene to the reader of soldiers who had gone to war with a strong nationalist idea, but ended up
facing the horrible reality with induced shell shock (Owen 1 2). The language of the first stanza
may surprise the reader, as it is barely appropriate for the glory of the battlefield where heroes are
supposed to be found. As the soldiers lethargically persevere, or marched asleep through the blood
that surrounded them, the slow rhythm of stanza allows the reader to somewhat empathize with the
rugged troops to the point to where both sides may not have quickly grasped the grave calamity
that is soon to occur, especially with the use of softly in gas shells dropping softly behind, to prove
that point (Owen

Personal Branding
Personal Branding is already conflicting with Company Branding outside the work place. A
middle school teacher was suspended with pay for making remarks about her students on Face
Book (Norwalk, 2010). A woman was fired after criticizing her boss on face book ( Fired over
Facebook, 2011). A young man was rejected for a position at Cisco because he tweeted that he had
to weigh the fat paycheck against the drive and work (Popkin, 2009). These examples go on and
on. Entire sites have been dedicated to helping employees build their personal brands without
conflicting with their company brand(Schawbel, 2009).
However, the issue of employee s personal branding will grow in the minds of middle management

Clay Shirky writes in her book Cognitive Surplus of a day where HR departments will overlook
small statements against organizations because in the future most everyone will have at least made
one mistake (2010).
Addressing the issue of conflicts in personal branding in the future will rely heavily on the
individual company policies. Middle managers will need to formulate new business and functional
level strategies. For example they will have to establish functional level policy s to allow
employees to communicate personal brands in a business oriented fashion. Middle managers will
also have to implement company level restrictions for issues that may harm the company brand.
Middle management will also have to formulate functional level strategies with the HR department.
These strategies will focus on hiring employees with both character in their personal brands and
talent in their resumes. These strategies will be heavily influenced by both internal factors (the
mission statement and culture of the company) and external factors (the laws, politics, company
opportunities, threats, and environment).
Both middle managers and employees of the future will have high levels of resiliency in order to
compete in such an interconnected world. Employees will have to take on a work life that is never
ending, with more responsibilities. In implementing

Why Is Benjamin Franklin Called The Picture Perfect...
Nate Locatelli
Mr. Pisenti
Period 1
11/2/17
Benjamin Franklin was the picture perfect self made man. From seemingly nothing, he became a
successful musician, author, scientist, and printer. In his free time, he helped found and build a
country.
The key to Franklin s success was his desire and his need to constantly improve himself on all
fronts. His quest for excellence began at only the age of 20. It was then that he thought of a program
that would motivate and push him to possess more virtuous habits. Since he was also a
perfectionist, he drew up a list of 13 virtues, and created a chart on which to keep track of his
progress in living them. Each week he would focus on one virtue while also keeping track of the
others. He would then move on to the next virtue and so on, eventually going through four cycles
of each of the virtues in a single year.
When he failed to live up to the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
To make the most of his time, he created a schedule for himself. To begin the day the right way,
not only regarding order, but living well in general. This helped Franklin focus on things he could
do to serve his fellow man and help his society as he went about his daily routine. Franklin
examined how he had spent his hours and whether he had done the good things he had planned on
doing, as well as if he had taken action on spontaneous opportunities to lend others a helping hand.
Benjamin Franklin s moral and social philosophies inspired and still inspire millions around the
world. Becoming a self made man is a long and tough task. Improve yourself, which will then
improve the society around you. Slight slip ups are impossible to avoid when trying to follow strict
ideals. Franklin s purpose was to make people aware of their inclinations and to help them overcome
the natural tendencies of themselves, which would limit our dependence on other people. Benjamin
Franklin is an inspiration to us

Equality in Opportunity and Equality in Outcome Essay
Diversity, equality and fairness are the latest buzzwords being kicked around in academia and
the media. Everybody is supposed to achieve the American Dream today, regardless of who you
are, where you came from, or what you do to get there. According to their math, equality of
opportunity equals equality of outcome, and if it doesn t, rig the formula so it does. I read a
couple of articles in nj.com recently. In one, a Rutgers Camden professor of Public Policy
published a study that found that more poor people were being concentrated in small to mid size
cities today compared to ten years ago. OK, the economy collapsed and the housing market
tanked: poor people always lived in crappy neighborhoods with other poor people, and rich people

The first thing I noticed was that they didn t cut their lawns that often, and weren t into home
maintenance and repairs that our homeowners association requires. For instance, a ten foot piece
of my neighbor s siding fell off two years ago and it s still sitting in his backyard where it landed.
The other day I was in my backyard raking leaves, another chore my neighbors aren t into. I was
looking around and noticed that three out of my four closest neighbor s properties were
deteriorating. Bags of trash piling up, junk in the yard, siding not cleaned, repairs not made etc.
Normally I wouldn t care, but I plan on moving out within a year or two, and I don t think any
prospective buyer of my home would be impressed with the nouveau trash, Camdenesque look of
my neighborhood. Ironically, the one home that is being maintained has been vacant for the last
five years, its owner dead four of those years. Fortunately, his heirs are taking care of the
property until the estate is settled. I went online to look at my town s tax records. They have a
nice website where you can view your payment history and see what you owe. You can also view
the records of everyone else in town. I found that three of my neighbor s homes are owned by
minority females. One passed away last year and her home is being rented out, even though it is
still in her name. The other two homes are occupied by their owners and their live in

Applying Normalized Tables And The Model Of The Entity...
then be able to identify the dependencies between the attributes, and then create normalized tables
directly based on those dependencies. More often than not this can be done mentally or on paper
before the tables are even added to the actual design.
Normalization appropriates the affiliation amongst all of the attributes within the entity table to
achieve its goal. Since the Entity Relationship Diagram will also contain the appropriations
amongst the attributes, as a common base to identify the entity type structure, than it is possible to
then apply the normalization principles, all during the conceptual data modeling phase. Enacting
Normalization during the Entity Relationship Diagram can then improve the conceptual model, and

The relationship are then indicated by the common columns, or the domains, in the data tables are
related. The Transitive Dependency within an entity type takes place of the non entity attributive
attributes have dependency amongst there selves. Multi Valued dependency likeness in the Entity
Relationship Diagram can take place when the attributes within the entity example have more than
one value. This is a potential instance when some attributes within an entity examples have the
maximum cardinality of n, or more than 1. When the attribute has lots of values in an entity
example, this can be setup either as the composite key modifier of the entity type, or then split into
the weak entity type.
Normalized Entity Relationship represents the dependency approach in Entity Relationship
Diagram toward the intended use in the application of normal form. Normalization is a many step
occurrence that begins with unnormalized relations. The first set up in normalization is to
appropriate the data into a two dimensional table. In an unnormalized relation the data can repeat
within the columns. To be able to move to a first normal form a relation must also contain only the
atomic values at each of the rows and columns. So this means no repeating groups, and a set of
columns will be named the Candidate key when its value can

Why The Atomic Bomb Did Not Win The War
Why the bomb seemed like it would make the war worst it actually ended the war quicker. The
war ended quicker because it finally caused Japan to surrender and accept the defeat. The atomic
bomb did not win the war. Japan had been defeated already by land, sea, and air campaign that
went before. It is reasonable to conclude, however, that the bomb did force the Japanese
surrender and considerably sooner than it would have occurred otherwise. (Text 1 Page 8). The
bomb did not win but it ended it because Japan s way of fighting is fight to the last man and it is
better to die in combat than to surrender. If the bomb had been dropped sooner it would ve been
the factor that won the war, but since Japan had little fighting effort in the air

Comparison Of Pygmalion And My Fair Lady
The 1964 award winning film My Fair Lady is a musical adaptation of George Bernard Shaw s
stage production Pygmalion (first performed in the year of 1913). Taking place in Edwardian
London, My Fair Lady depicts Professor Henry Higgins (portrayed by Rex Harrison), a
misogynistic phonetics professor, and Colonel Hugh Pickering (Wilfrid Hyde White), the
author of Spoken Sanskrit. Professor Higgins, after coming out of a theatre and hearing Eliza
shouting in her harsh Cockney accent, places a bet with Colonel Pickering that he can take the
Cockney working class girl and make her presentable in high society within six months. The
working class girl, Eliza Doolittle (portrayed by Audrey Hepburn), agrees to speech lessons from
Professor Higgins to improve her job prospects. Eliza grudgingly agrees to Professor Higgins
lessons after flying into an angry outburst when a man points out the professor copying down her
speech. Despite Professor Higgins treats Eliza as a lesser being, his acquaintance Colonel
Pickering treats her with constant respect and kindness, therefore treating her as an equal. It is
Pickering s treating Eliza not as a lesser being, but as an equal that allows Eliza to flourish and
succeed. In the film adaptation of Bernard Shaw s Pygmalion, the most influential character is
Colonel Pickering. As a gentleman, a colonel and an academic who studies Indian dialects,
Pickering shares Higgins interest in linguistics, however he is not as extreme in his

First Generation Student Essay
First generation students can easily blend in with all other college groups, but can be
distinguished by them self disclosing, on a check box or drop down menu, during the application
process. A first generation student is one who is the first in their family to attend a four year
university in pursuit of a bachelor s degree. This particular group of students lacks Precollege
preparation, study skills, and major exploration, to name a few. They also suffer from a
phenomenon known as the Imposter Phenomenon, which states it is a feeling the students receive
that is far beyond not fitting in, but thoughts so deep that the students feel they do not deserve to be
at the institution and the experience should have gone to someone else (Davis, p. 49). Thoughts of
having to meet with a professor face to face instills fear in many first generation students and it
takes time for them to gain courage to approach office hours and build awareness of multiple
resources the campuses have to offer, in which they can take advantage of (Davis, p. 52).
Community Colleges have been increasing the number of students and the fastest growing
population is that of first generation students. California Community Colleges Chancellor s Office

The second line brings in the aural aspects of suffering by using words like coughing and cursed

causes them to swear. Owen tries to make the readers feel pity for the men and does this
extremely well by saying All went lame, all blind . This gives us the image that men couldn t
see or hear correctly. He uses the metaphor Drunk with fatigue to illustrate the tiredness of the
men. Stanza one ends on a note of warning; the danger of which the soldiers are unaware, as they
can t hear properly. The first and second verses are all to do with the visual and oral images of
the soldiers and the ironic sense that the men are on their way back from the front line so they
should be in less threat, yet this is where one man is killed. The next verse begins with a shout of
danger: Gas! Gas! Quick boys. Ecstasy is used paradoxically; it shows the speed and panic of the
men as they know how important it is to get their helmets on and yet their fingers fail them. The
poet tricks the reader by saying Fitting the clumsy helmets just in time which gives us the feeling
that everyone has got their helmets on; this isn t true. The next few lines talk about the terror and
pain the man goes through as the gas enters his body. The simile floundering like a man in fire was

Analysis Of Divergent As A Dystopian Film
Respond critically to significant connections across texts, supported by evidence.
Throughout all four of my dystopian films a strong theme that has been brought to the surface is
the idea of individuality is the enemy . As a dystopian film is an illusion of the perfect society,
they go hand in hand. The illusion of a perfect society is typically maintained through the use of
corporate bodies and entities. Dystopian films are typical to play on the worst case scenario of a
situation, within the four films studied Divergent, Macbeth, V for Vendetta and Mokingjay part 2,
the worst case scenario is seen when the government takes control and citizens are under constant

These are all themes that relate to homicides, people are generally killed when they have more
power than someone else or they simply don t want to deal with the problem anymore. It is in this
movie that we see Tris and Four defeat the system, they firstly defeat the system through their
manner, the fact that they are able to confront their deepest fears and are able to see through the
idea of a perfect society. Divergent s also work out that you don t need to be paired with people
that share the mutual hate that you have towards another faction in this case. Tris and Four
manipulate the system as they can see that the government has split up everyone so that they don t
unite and combine all of their skill sets. This is why we see that the government purposely divides
people to stop them from combining their skill sets and becoming more powerful than the
government. Showing how Tris and four are feared to the government and displaying individuality
is the enemy.
This relates to the homicide rate in Chicago in the current world as the year that Tris and Four
defeated the system the homicides in real life decreased. Showing that the homicide rate in Chicago
was used as a draw point to establish themes throughout the movie. Through the use of editing
within Divergent it is established that the relationships between the recruits and each other are

happen next but also further develops each of the characters through these complex symbols that
she incorporates throughout the story. Carter first alludes to the outcome of the story by
introducing the ruby choker that the Marquis gave as a wedding gift within the first few pages of
the narrative. She describes it as, a choker of rubies, two inches wide, like an extraordinarily
precious slit throat (6). The reader can infer a considerable amount from this one simple... Show

He orders her to put on that white dress you wore to hear Tristan and the necklace that prefigures
your end, suggesting as though he has known her demise was inescapable from the moment he
gave her the choker (40). Regardless of whether or not the reader had missed the clues that Carter
left earlier in the story, this reference to the choker is much more explicit, as it contrasts the dark
ruby color with the bright white dress. This illustrates the theme of innocence versus violence,
which is seen all throughout the story. The explicit revelation of the necklace prefiguring her end
shows that the symbolism that Carter incorporated in the story begins subtler and becomes more
straightforward towards the end. While not all of Carter s elements of foreshadowing may have
been as lengthy and apparent as the ruby red choker, not a single one fell short of its quality and
effectiveness in helping her to reach the overall effect of building anticipation and increasing

A Data Driven Decision Making Platform Essay
In this dissertation, a data driven decision making platform is developed focusing on individuals
at high risk of getting breast and ovarian cancers due to their BRCA gene mutations. First a
likelihood estimation model is built based on a gradient boosting model. This model is capable
of identifying individuals at high risk of having BRCA mutations based on their family and
personal history of cancers. Then, a Markov decision process (MDP) model is formulated to help
BRCA mutation carriers and their health providers to find effective intervention actions (based on
cost or quality adjusted life years) to prevent breast and ovarian cancers. Finally, a robust MDP
(RMDP) model is presented to study the sensitivity of MDP optimal strategies under uncertainty. In
what follows, I present a summary of findings in Chapters 2, 3, and 4 of this dissertation.
In Chapter 2, four machine learning classifiers are used to find the likelihood of having BRCA
mutation based on detailed personal and family history of cancer information. The data used for
validation of the models emerges from a recent nation wide survey study (ABOUT) of those who
requested BRCA genetic testing through one of the commercial health insurance companies in the
United States. This is the first study evaluating existing well known BRCA risk estimation models
using data on general population in the United States. The models considered were gradient
boosting model (GBM), random forest, support vector machines, and

Do Not Go Gentle Into That Good Night Tone
Dylan Thomas s Do Not Go Gentle Into That Good Night implores people to live fully due to the
fact that time is short, and usually, it is too late before they realize it. He warns to not spend life
foolishly, and also states in the poem that even though death is inevitable, there should be no
restriction as to how one should control his or her destiny. Thomas s tone is urgent, but also
incorporates shift, metaphor, imagery, and repetition in order to remind people to live life with
passion.
This poem is inspired by Thomas s ailing father. Do Not Go Gentle Into That Good Night s
purpose is to tell people to fight against the ticking clock of death. Rage, rage against the dying of
the light (Line 3) apprises readers to retaliate death. Typically people associate rage with anger,
however this rage is shown as an act of reprisal.. The main message of the poem is this: live life

Personal Information And Network Security
Personal information and network security is vital in today s online environment. There are my
people that are out there to get someone s personal information in order to either to seal the
personal information for financial gain or in some cases personal harassment. Ensuring that your
equipment and settings are kept to a degree that works well for your usage can minimize these
types of attacks. Settings can be found at multiple layers of a home network that includes the
computer right from the box, its system settings, useraccounts, passwords, the home network
security and accounts that may be used online.
New computer set up:
I have set up both PC and MAC and have found that Macintosh is a much simpler set up for the
basic user. After powering on the MAC, it ask you for some basic information starting with the
language that you use and geographical location. Next your MAC will want to connect to a
network. By connecting to a network, most of the setup is automated and synchronizes with your
existing Apple ID. If you do not have an Apple ID, you can skip the step or create one at that time.
If you are using a MAC product, it is highly recommended that you have an Apple account. It is
used to log into the Apple store which is where most software, programs and updates can be found.
Other software can be found over the internet, but programs that are purchased through the store are
far less likely to contain malware. With an internet connection and Apple ID entered, the

How Did Broussard Join The American Revolution
Amand Broussard also has his own personal reasons for joining the American Revolution.
Broussard, a Spanish citizen had little reason to take sides in the war. After relocating to New

his seemingly happy life New Orleans, Broussard still held a grudge against the British Empire

opportunity to avenge their parents and prove themselves worthy Acadian heirs (pg.70).

The Benefits Of Sleeping On A Problem Essay
The Benefits of Sleeping on a Problem Introduction If you re like most people, you have
probably been told, when you re struggling with a problem or decision, that it s a good idea to
sleep on it. It s something that people say so frequently that it has become something of a
clichГ©. Like most clichГ©s, though, it turns out that there s some truth to it. In 1865, a
German chemist named Friedrich August Kekule von Stradonitz solved a problem that had
been puzzling scientists for decades. He published a paper identifying the structure of benzene
as a ring of carbon atoms. Years later, when he was giving a talk about how he made his
breakthrough discovery, he credited it to a dream he d had. In the dream, he saw an image of a
serpent swallowing its own tail, something that is called ouroboros. The symbol dates back to
early Indian, Egyptian and Greek mythology. The sight of the symbol revealed the ring like
structure of benzene to him. Von Stradonitz is not alone. History is littered with similar examples.
Human beings sometimes wake up with the solution to a complex problem, something they have
been wrestling with, clear in their heads. Why does this happen? Is there scientific merit to the
idea of sleeping on a problem? In this article, we will explore the notion that sleeping on a
problem can help us solve it. It s a somewhat complex topic, but one worth investigating. The first
key to understanding what happens in our brains while we sleep is to talk about why we need

The Tower of Babel found in Genesis 11:1 9 tells the story of humanity s movement eastward and

In the film Strictly Ballroom, the director Baz Luhrman uses many different film techniques to

Even though Fran became more confident, her costume and makeup still suited her personality.
For example at the Pan Pacific Grand Prix, all of the other female dancers wore bright coloured,
revealing outfits, Fran wore a traditional red Spanish dress. At the end of the film Fran s physical
appearance changed dramatically and so did her confidence. These characters are good examples of
how Luhrman uses costume and makeup to effectively influence the portrayal and development of
characters in the film.
In Strictly Ballroom, Luhrman uses many different camera angles and lighting techniques to
exaggerate scenes, settings and even characters personalities. An example of this is at the start of
the film, when Scott Hastings is dancing by himself in a room, there is a bright, white spotlight on
him as he dances, drawing the audience to watch him. This happens whenever Scott dances and it
shows the audience that Scott has a sense of purity and that he is the protagonist of the film.
Luhrman uses low angle shots when Scott and Fran are dancing at the end of the film, this is a
good technique used so the audience can see them dancing and also gives the audience the
impression that they are dominate and confident. Another character who is a good example of
camera angles and film techniques being used on them to portray their personality is Barry Fife.
Barry is a mean character and Luhrman uses dark, reddish lighting to make him seem evil.

Analysis Of The Painting Two Women Of The Woods By Vincent...

Vincent Van Gogh, a famous Dutch artist in expressionism and impressionism, was sold at the
price of $689,000 (Lot: 17 VINCENT VAN GOGH, 2013; Van Gogh, 2008). Besides, Silent

recent price has reached ВЈ445,792, which is roughly at $676,000 (Banksy, 2014; Banksy s Silent

considered to be an act of vandalism all along the walls in England. Therefore, what graffiti

There is one instance that lightning strikes ceased to occur from January to March 2010 that
temporarily raised fears of the phenomenon being extinguished permanently but was later found out
that it was drought that caused it. Humidity in a sense may have played a vital role in the
occurrence but scientists lately say that maybe it s the region s wind patterns and unique topography
that contribute to the special phenomenon. They say that when warm winds, trapped by the
surrounding mountains in Lake Maracaibo, collides with cool air coming down from the Andes

A lot of the (lightning) hot spots are tied to features in the terrain slopes of mountain ranges, curved

Having irregularities like that in the terrain can help generate wind patterns and heating or cooling

The Internet Is The Most Popular Medium For Data Sharing,...
Nathan Runge
Between 1960 and 1980, Robert E. Kahn and Vint Cerf perfected two computer protocols, and
created a model that would allow multiple computers to communicate on one network (Evan
Andrews, 2013). This model, now known as the internet, has become the most popular medium for
data sharing, and communication. According to the U.S. Census in 2013, internet use at home
tripled from 18 percent to 54.7 percent between 1997 and 2003 (U.S Census Bureau, 2013). This
large increase in use quickly created worldwide markets, breached the distance communication
barrier, and increased efficiencies in people s daily lives. Whether you re a businessman securely
storing information to The Cloud, or an immigrant wanting to see relatives face to face in another
country; the internet gives the common man the ability to succeed in ways that were not possible
before.
Ever since the blade or combustion engine, we have seen the positive and negative consequences of
technology. The internet has been one of the fastest evolving technologies of humankind, and made
its way into almost every progressive culture around the world. As a rapidly growing and popular
technology, I believe it is important to look at the far reaches of the internet, to understand the
potential consequences towards users.
As the internet becomes increasingly accessible and efficient, companies and individuals are taking
advantage of digital marketing, online stores, quick access of information, and social networking.

Jamaica Kincaid s novel A Small Place is a fictional novel about her life growing up on an island
that has been imperialised by the British. Jamaica Kincaid shows acrimony to the colonization of
her country, towards the corrupt government that has stunted the growth of her country, towards the
white people that took Antiguain their hands and molded it into something embryonic. The
dictionary defines third world as the underdeveloped nations of the world, especially those with
widespread poverty, with this description, Antigua will be classified as a third world country after
achieving their independence from the British. A Small Placereveals that post colonial Antigua is
still pinned by a form of slavery through the nation s poor economy, government corruption, and the
impoverished Antiguans. The poor economy and corrupt government are hand in hand to help
create the impoverished Antiguans.
The corrupt government of Antigua restricts their citizens ability to buy specific goods, like cars,
in order to benefit the people working in the government, banks are encouraged by the
government to make loans available for cars, but loans for houses not so easily available; and if
you ask again why, you will be told that the two main car dealerships in Antigua are owned in part
or outright by ministers in government (Kincaid 7). The government forces the banks to make it
easier for the purchase of cars that are partly owned by the ministers of the Antiguan government so

Forgiveness In The Sunflower Analysis
Forgiveness There is an abundance of ways that one might interpret forgiveness. Psychologists
might explain it as a conscious decision to pardon the actions of those who ve done wrong.
Religious people might identify it as an attribute that we should all have. Though there are many
ways in which forgiveness is seen, they all conclude that it leads people towards happiness and
peace. In Simon Wiesenthals book The Sunflower, forgivenessis an important concept. Forgiveness
is shown as an important concept to the story as it makes the reader questionthe forgiver s role, the
importance of forgiveness, and the reason people ask for forgiveness. In The Sunflower by Simon
Wiesenthal, he shares his story of when a dying Nazi soldier asked him for forgiveness. After that
incident, Wiesenthal goes on a journey through life trying to figure out if his actions were right in
not forgiving the soldier.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Going about life with a forgiving attitude tends to make us happier and more at peace. In The
Sunflower, forgiveness is the main and most important concept. Karl asks for forgiveness from
Simon on his actions and Simon goes through the rest of his life pondering whether or not what
he did was right and if he should try and forgive himself for what he did. After talking to Bolek,
Simon states, I became less and less certain as to whether I had acted rightly (Wiesenthal 83). This
statement shows how Simon does not know whether what he did was right and how every person
he talked to about his situation impacted his opinions. Forgiveness is such an important concept
that it makes Wiesenthal ponder about his actions and ask for input from multiple different people.
He felt as if he cannot be at peace until he comes to terms with his actions. This shows that
forgiveness is an extremely important concept in both life and The Sunflower as it can lead us onto
different paths and make us question our views and

Sondheim s A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum
In Sondheim s A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, the tradition of New Comedy is
faithfully brought to life in a musical set in ancient Rome, but relevant to the sensibilities of its
1960 s audience. Through movie sets that suggest Roman surroundings, and comedic sequences that
embody the spirit of the sixties, Sondheim creates a story where Roman characters, acting
according to their types, draw in modern audience members and create a energetic romp through
ancient Romethat is firmly rooted in the past, but could only have been taken in sixties era
America. Many aspects of the film pay clear homage to New Comedy. The plot is simplistic,
focusing on the desire of a young man to get around the restrictions of his parents and gain the
affections of the girl he loves. The characters, although not boring, are one dimensional. Hero,
the love sick youth, has one hope in the film: to unite himself with Philia. Pseudolus, his slave,
only wishes to earn his freedom. The life s work of Erronius is to find his children, each
bestowed with a ring bearing an engraved gaggle of geese; and so on through the inhabitants of
this depiction of Rome. Each character does whatever it takes to achieve their one goal in life, and
this is what builds the frenetic disposition of the plot, causing twists and turns especially where the
very determined instigator Pseudolus is concerned. There is no character development, however,
and every character finishes the film with same endeavor he

Genetic Expression In Gene Expression
In gene expression DNA, the blueprint of life is transcribed into RNA, a nucleic acid that acts as a
messenger carrying instructions that control the synthesis of proteins. Gene expression is vital to
determining cell functions and exactly how much protein should be produced by the cell. The
process in which the end proteins are modified can also be manipulated by researchers. The types of
cells which are typically handled in laboratories include prokaryotes. Escherichia coli is a bacteria
found in the human digestive system, preventing other pathogens from residing. Certain E. coli
strains can be pathogenic and can lead to food poisoning, urinary tract infections, pneumonia, and
gastrointestinal infections. Ampicillin is an antibiotic... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
During this study, plasmids with ampicillin resistance (pAMP) known as pUC18, were manipulated
due to their stability in extreme environments. The pUC18 plasmid pAMP gene codes for the
production of beta lactamase, an enzyme utilized in the breakdown of ampicillin. Once E. coli
obtains this gene, it is able to survive in an environment that is ampicillin rich. Lux plasmids were
the second type used to provide bioluminescence in the cultures of E. coli grown. The lux plasmid
contains genetic material which codes for luciferase, an enzyme which catalyzes bioluminescence,
a light emitting reaction. This is considered the marker where transformation efficiency can be
analyzed through the light emissions.
Several techniques were implemented in this study to improve E. coli bacterias competency, the
ability for a cell to uptake genetic material. These procedures were necessary considering the
bacteria does not allow for transformation so efficiently in natural circumstances. Since it lacks the
ability to do so, the uptake of material would be limited despite the preventative measures taken. To
neutralize the negatively charged DNA in E. coli, the use of CaCl2 (sodium chloride), a positively
charged solution, dissociates the calcium from chloride, which enters the cells and alters the
charge. This process is known as electroporation. This causes the bacteria cells to swell and the
calcium molecules help adjust the cell membrane to become

Political Communication
Politics and the media have long been intimately involved with each other, with media strongly
setting an agenda in which politics is very important. (Harris 1999,p.167) Our perceived reality
of the real world is largely a product of the media. (Harris 1999,p.186) It is not known which
influences more but there are definitely two sides to the story. Many studies have been done to
decide but each comes out with different answers. Many say that the media has more of an impact
on politics than does politics on the media. The two have always been natural adversaries.

There is still argument for both sides but leaning more towards the media. Presidential elections,
campaigns, and policies have always been important in the media and to the public. The media
creates a political world that is the basis of the public s knowledge and the later behavior, such
as voting for the president or any public official. The themes and issues that are repeated in the
media become important to viewers. Those that are highlighted become especially influential
when it comes to choosing a candidate. The media affects evaluations of presidents. Presidential
approval is strongly influenced by how the media portrays the candidate to the public. For
example, during the Gulf War, George Bush received bad publicity based on his performance
with the war even though his prior economic performance was exceptional. (Edwards 1999, p329)
The values in which people used to evaluate him on were influenced by what the media had to say.
Particular televised political advertising, televised candidate events. And news articles also affect
the preferences and opinions of the voters. For example, Bob Dole in the 1996 election. His age
arose early from the media. During the primary election, over 800 news stories dealt with Dole s

These factors have major impacts on how businesses operate and make decisions. For example,
interest rates affect a firm s cost of capital and therefore to what extent a business grows and
expands. Exchange rates affect the costs of exporting goods and the supply and price of imported
goods in an economy * Social factors include the cultural aspects and include health consciousness,
population growth rate, age distribution, career attitudes and emphasis on safety. Trends in social
factors affect the demand for a company s products and how that company operates. For example,
an aging population may imply a smaller and less willing workforce (thus increasing the cost of
labor). Furthermore, companies may change various management strategies to adapt to these social
trends (such as recruiting older workers). * Technological factors include technological aspects such
as R amp;D activity, automation, technology incentives and the rate of technological change. They
can determine barriers to entry, minimum efficient production level and influence outsourcing
decisions. Furthermore, technological shifts can affect costs, quality, and lead to innovation. *

Fetal Alcohol Syndrome Analysis
Introduction
Fetal Alcohol Syndrome (FAS) is a collection of conditions that affect the cognitive, physical, and
motor development and abilities of children. Fetal Alcohol Syndrome is caused by a teratogen,
such as alcohol or illicit drugs, crossing through the mother s blood to the developing fetus (Center
for Disease Control [CDC], 201 6). Depending on the amount of the toxin consumed and the period
of the pregnancy, FAS has a wide degrees of severity and therefore is considered a spectrum
disorder (Plante Beeson, 2013).

Direct Observation Paper
For my direct observation paper, I decided to write about the Social Learning Theory, proposed
by Albert Bandura. This theory asserts that learning is a cognitive process that takes place in a
social context and can occur purely through observation or direct instruction, even in the absence
of motor reproduction or direct reinforcement. I observed two young, caucasian boys at a
shopping mall. The purpose of this paper is to use the course material from my PSY 335 course
and applicate it to the real world through this observation.
During the class presentation by Dr. Felver on Septmeber 7th, the Social Learning Theory was
discussed. Bandura s social learning theory, states that people learn from one another via
observation, imitation and modeling. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The boy first saw the other boy whom we can assume was his brother or friend doing this behavior
and then initiated the same behavior. Besides this, the young boy also showed characteristics of
this theory in the beginning when he pointed at the carousel and said horsee, shortly after it was
said after the other boy. Bandura s theory stressed that one can acquire a wide range of behaviors
and thoughts through observing others behaviors. In this case, one boy observed the other boy
point at the carousel, say horsee, and repeated the same behavior. Similarly, while riding the
carousel, the boy observed the other boy making clicking noises with his tongue and saying neigh,
neigh, and repeated the same behavior. This can be classified as cognitive, observational learning.
Bandura s most recent model of learning and development, highlights three elements; behavior, the
person/cognition, and the environment. An individual s confidence, the fact that he can control his
success is an example of the person factor. The strategies he uses are examples of cognitive factors.
Behavior, cognitive and environmental factors are interactive. Behavior can influence cognitive and
environmental factors and vice versa. In this observation, there is a link between person and

Pogroms Of 1881 Analysis
For many years, it was widely accepted that the Russian pogroms of 1881 were organized attacks
towards the Jews spearheaded by the Russian government. This conspiracy theory was created by
historians of the time. Historians living during the time of these disastrous heinous pogroms
looked for an instigating hand behind the pogroms. In May of 1881, L. Schloss in a meeting of
the Anglo Jewish association stated it was impossible that outrages could take place, and last in
some instances more than 24 hours, in a country which bristled so with police and soldiery as Russia
, without the authorities winked at them for their own purposes (Klier 384). The Levin
Memorandum in 1882 summed up the conspiracy theory. Levin said what the contemporary... Show

Klier supports the theory that the 1881 pogroms were an ethnic riot. He writes, ethnic identity
creates boundaries and divisions between us and the other (p. 79). In Eastern Europe, Jews were not
only different based on their religion, they were different in their entirety. They wore different
clothes, had different occupations, lived in different areas, spoke different languages, and
followed different holidays. In the years prior to the pogroms, there was a true dislike of the
Jews by the government and the people. The Jews were treated as a separate class, a different
people. Klier discusses the anti jewish policies of Tsar Nicholas I and then the liberalization of
some of these policies under Tsar Alexander II. The new policies by Tsar Alexander II actually
led to increased debate over the Jewish question and increased Judeophobia. By 1881, the
differences between the Jews and non Jews were accentuated not only by government legislation,
but also by economics as some Jews were starting to flouish, rumors, and newspapers. The ultimate
transgression that led to the pogroms was the rumor that it was the Jews that murdered the Tsar! In
the first pogrom of 1881 in Elisavetgrad, the incident that triggered the start of the pogrom was a
brawl in a tavern that started the shouts, The Jews are beating our people! The

The Development of Royal African Company Essay
England s interest in Africa for trading purposes can be traced back to 1481 when two
Englishmen prepared for an expedition to the Guinea Coast. At this time the King of Portugal,
John II asked Edward IV of England if they could not continue with the expedition because of
Portugal s claim to the Guinea Coast, and Edward complied. It was not until 1536 when William
Hawkins, father of famous shipbuilder in the Elizabethan era Admiral Sir John Hawkins, made the
first three voyages and traded with Brazil. Hawkins went back in 1553 to the Gold Coast and sold
goods mainly for gold near Elmina on the South Coast of present day Ghana. He then traveled
inland to Benin where they obtained pepper and elephant teeth. After losing about two thirds of...

The land that the charter granted was the adjacent islands on the west coast of Africa from Cape
Blanco to Cape of Good Hope for a period of a thousand years. There is a part in the charter that
states the purpose of the company and that is setting forward and furthering of the trade intend in
the parts aforesaid and the encouragement of the undertakers in discovering golden mines and
setting of plantations there . There was never mention of slaves. There were five ships that went
the Henritta, Sophia, Amity, Griffin, and Kingsale. This charter was ultimately a failure. There are
no records of even an attempt to find gold mines; the climate affected the men in such a way that
prevented them of doing so. There was a small cargo sent back to England that sold for 1,567
Pounds when it was triple that to fund the journey.
After this failing, a business like policy approach was taken when a new charter was granted on
January 10, 1663. The previous charter was inadequate for raising funds and a lack of leadership
to direct affairs. The new company was called The Company of Royal Adventures of England

the Cape of Sallee on the Coast of Morocco. The charter this time included the buying and selling

The World Of The Crusades
These past few weeks, everyone in the tenth grade has been learning about the crusades. The
people, weapons, food, diseases, and technological advances (or disadvantages since it was the
Dark Age) were all taught to us and now it is time to put it to the test. We learned that the crusades
affected all three religions that have ties to Jerusalem, Christianity, Judaism, and Islam. We watched
Kingdom of Heaven, a historical fiction movie based on the crusades. The time of the story that we
see is based between the second and third crusade. Although the movie had many historically
correct parts, there were also a lot of inaccuracies. My job is to show you the inaccuracies and
what would have actually happened during that time if that crusade had actually happened. I will be
touching the topics of weaponry and how they used it, who Balian actually is, and what people
actually knew during that time period.
First off, I want to touch on the topic of weaponry and how they used it. During the movie,
Kingdom of Heaven, they show trebuchets hurtling firing rocks at the walls to Jerusalem, horses
armor, and they show Balian being able to fight and kill one Islamic servant after only one training
session with his father, Baron Godfrey. Although this makes for a dramatic and exciting film, it just
is not accurate and that makes many historians just shake their heads.
Trebuchets were a big way of fighting in the 12th century. They got the kind of weapons they used
right, they just did

How Did Abu Bakr Contribute To The Rise Of Islam
Upon the death of the Prophet, Abu Bakr, the friend of the Prophet and the first adult male to
embrace Islam, became caliph. Abu Bakr ruled for two years to be succeeded by Umar who was
caliph for a decade and during whose rule Islam spread extensively east and west conquering the
Persian empire, Syria and Egypt. It was Umar who marched on foot at the end of the Muslimarmy
into Jerusalem and ordered the protection of Christian sites.
Umar also established the first public treasury and a sophisticated financial administration. He
established many of the basic practices of Islamic government. Umar was succeeded by Uthman
who ruled for some twelve years during which time the Islamic expansion continued. He is also

They ruled for over 500 years but gradually their power waned and they remained only symbolic
rulers bestowing legitimacy upon various sultans and princes who wielded actual military
power[11]. The Abbasid caliphate was finally abolished when Hulagu, the Mongol ruler, captured
Baghdad in 1258, destroying much of the city including its incomparable libraries. While the
Abbasids ruled in Baghdad, a number of powerful dynasties such as the Fatimids, Ayyubids and
Mamluks held power in Egypt, Syria and Palestine. The most important event in this area as far as
the relation between Islam and the Western world was concerned was the series of Crusades
declared by the Pope and espoused by various European kings. The purpose, although political,
was outwardly to recapture the Holy Land and especially Jerusalem for Christianity. Although
there was at the beginning some success and local European rule was set up in parts of Syria and
Palestine, Muslims finally prevailed and in 1187

  • 2. Keeping Orca Whales in Captivity Should Be Banned Essay For many years, we ve been going to such places like, SeaWorld, and Six Flags, to see vast animals, like Orcas, also known as the killer whale, which we wouldn t normally see out in the wild. Orcas have been around for millions of years; it s known to be one of the smartest mammals, closest to humans. Since of their friendliness, people have taken advantage of them. For the past sixty years people have brought these massive creatures into their aquariums to make profit out of it, but never thought about their lives. What if you were kept in a cage for years, and was pushed to do such activities, you wouldn t do in your normal life. While being in captivities, killer whales are forced to do plentiful tricks, which they normally wouldn t do... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Tillikum grabbed her and dragged her into the water, and let her suffer to death, eventually she did. After seeing these incidents occur, from time to time, people have urged to ban SeaWorld from doing these activities. Keeping them activities will create more problems and will loose such person like Dawn, who loved and cared for the animal, but they cannot be trusted. That is why they are called Killer whales. People say that keeping orca s in captivities is not a problem, yet they do not realize that, orcas are also human beings. There are several reasons, why keeping these thirty feet long creatures, in captivities is a problem. One of them, which are the tank, which is too small, compared to ocean where they can swim freely. One the other side, in captivities, the space is limited. Comparatively, to how they swim out in the wild orcas can swim up to 100 miles per day a phenomenal amount, in comparison to the exercise they receive in captivity (Cronin). While being in captivity, orca has to keep swimming in circles or floats. Out In the wild, killer whales typically travel in pods of between five and 30 (Melissa). In captivities there are only few whales, so it makes them more aggressive toward one another. This sometimes can be lead to danger by killing each other for fighting to gain power of the tank. • 4. Understanding Labor Relations And Collective Bargaining Understanding Labor Relations and Collective Bargaining In the video, Understanding Labor Relations and Collective Bargaining , Donald Carty, CEO of American Airlines at that time, expresses the disappointment of the many executives in a union environment face in regards to labor costs. Shortly after this video, Mr. Carty had announced executive retention bonuses and pension protection right after most union members had already voted to accept over $1 billion worth of wage and benefit concessions (Zellner, 2003). Needless to say, this didn t brief too well to the point that two of the three unions were calling for new votes (Zellner, 2003). Mr. Carty claimed that it was merely to keep the company out of bankruptcy. So, if the labor costs were part of American Airlines restructuring before the contract negotiations as Mr. Carty had stated, what other preparations would have the company took prior to the negotiation process? What federal government agencies were involved in the labor relations? And what type of response would be expected from the unions that represent American Airlines employees after comments such as the ones Mr. Carty stated? Preparations Prior to a Negotiation Process Preparation for any negotiation should start with a number of steps designed to develop your negotiating strategy (Lynn, 2002). The company should have reviewed union agendas from previous negotiations, if there were any. This would have allowed them to analyze arguments made by both ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 6. Howard Zinn s The United States Howard Zinn s A People s History of the United States has been highly influential since its initial publication in 1980. It spawned adaptations for young readers (a two volume adaptation by Rebecca Stefoff: A Young People s History of the United States) and The People Speak, a History Channel documentary based on Zinn s work. Zinn himself was until his death in 2010 a heroic figure to many, especially for this book and for his ongoing teaching and social activism, which were directly related. A People s History of the United States was praised from the moment it appeared on shelves. A 1980 Library Journal review called it brilliant and moving and said it was well designed to appeal to both historians and general readers. However, the volume was not without its criticisms. Some of these critiques align with party lines. Roger Kimball s review in the conservative National Review labeled Zinn a Professor of contempt and dismissed the work as the ultimate in anti American history, a patchwork of leftist clichГ©s. Oscar Handlin s review for The American Scholar dismissed both Zinn s approach to history and the actual content of the work, citing a number of Zinn s claims as fallacious. Some criticisms of the work carried more intellectual weight and addressed the quality of Zinn s reasoning directly. Bruce Kuklick s review of the book for The Nation suggested that A People s History of the United States was essentially a textbook for the left, and as such it ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

This is when we realize that leadership is not about giving subordinates directions and orders to follow. It is about empowering people to grow to their fullest potentials. • 8. Using Population Control to Achieve Environmental... Environmental sustainability is when a person, community or area is able to meet the needs of the present, without compromising the needs of the future. Overconsumption will lead to hardship in the future, and possibly to the destruction of the planet s finite resources; and if we continue using our resources as at current rates, which have been estimated to be 4 planets worth of resources, this will be inevitable. Populations are all the inhabitants of a specific area/country and this population can be controlled in various methods such as population policies, like the ones in China, Kerala and France; as well as control via migration by putting on limits. A population control method that has achieve environmental sustainability is ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... On the other hand, Canada has a fairly low population density of just 3.75 people per square kilometer and with high resources, Canada is environmentally sustainable; some even say that Canada is under populated and therefore Canada is lenient on in migration. Similarly to this, Thomas Malthus (1766 1834) had the theory that when population overshoots a certain point (usually food production) there will be catastrophic effects. The club of Rome, in 1968 published a report called the limit of growth , which stated that population growth will lead to an increase in food demand and this will eventually lead to resource exhaustion, which is obviously not environmentally sustainable. To prevent resource exhaustion, the Club of Rome decided that we have to regulate population growth and reduce fertility and that is what China s One Child Policy, and Kerala s non enforced population policy was aiming to do. Similarly, the anti Malthusianist Ester Boserup was a resource optimist, with research based on studies of shifting cultivation. Her hypothesis was that population growth would result in an increase demand for food and to meet this demand, improved agriculture productivity would be needed. A higher agricultural productivity means an increase in methods of agriculture like the slash and burn technique, which often are not environmentally sustainable at all. • 9. The Pros And Cons Of The Gold Standard The gold standard uses gold directly or indirectly as money. In a pure gold standard, gold is used in transactions, with all prices expressed in terms of the amount of gold needed for purchase. Gold may be mint into coins so that its purity and weight will be certified by an authority since gold can be alloy (mixed with other metals), and its weight is impossible to determine without proper scales. Such coins can function as a unit of account. A monetary system can also be regarded as a gold standardif representations of gold are used in exchange. For example, paper notes can be part of a gold standard if a person can use them to claim gold. However, the word claim can be vague. Normally, people think of paper currency as part of a gold standard if the notes are backed by gold. Backing, however, may be largely irrelevant. For paper to represent gold, it must be regarded as equivalent to a given quantity and purity of gold. Here, domestic currency is freely convertible to gold. The gold standard was a commitment by participating countries to fix the prices of their domestic currencies in terms of a specified amount of gold. National money and other forms of money (bank ... Countries started abandoning the gold standard by reducing the amount of gold backing their currency so that they could increase the money supply to stimulate their economies. When some of the countries abandoned the gold standard, then it just collapsed, for it was a system that could not work unless all of the trading countries agreed to it. The exit from the gold standard afforded countries more leeway to stimulate their economies, as it gave them back their monetary autonomy and allowed them to depreciate their exchange rates. But, at the same time, the depreciation in exiting countries increased the difficulties for countries with an exchange rate that was still tied to gold and consequently pushed them towards leaving the gold standard as ... • 10. Dulce Et Decorum Est Context Essay The context of poetry is important because it provides readers a background of the writing before allowing them to understand, appreciate, and analyze the poems. War poems, for instance, are often filled with both historical context and social context especially Dulce et Decorum Est by Wilfred Owen, an english poet and soldier of the First World War. The use of literary devices, such as imagery, tone, alliteration, and allusion; as well as personal experience on the battlefield, is why the poem Dulce et Decorum Estby Wilfred Owen demonstrates the contexts of World War I and anti war ideology successfully. The language of the first stanza may surprise the reader, as it is barely appropriate for the glory of the battlefield where heroes are supposed to be found. As the soldiers lethargically persevere, or marched asleep through the blood that surrounded them, the slow rhythm of stanza allows the reader to somewhat empathize with the rugged troops to the point to where both sides may not have quickly grasped the grave calamity that is soon to occur, especially with the use of softly in gas shells dropping softly behind, to prove that point (Owen ... A young man was rejected for a position at Cisco because he tweeted that he had to weigh the fat paycheck against the drive and work (Popkin, 2009). These examples go on and on. Middle managers will also have to implement company level restrictions for issues that may harm the company brand. Middle management will also have to formulate functional level strategies with the HR department. These strategies will focus on hiring employees with both character in their personal brands and talent in their resumes. These strategies will be heavily influenced by both internal factors (the mission statement and culture of the company) and external factors (the laws, politics, company opportunities, threats, and environment). • 12. Why Is Benjamin Franklin Called The Picture Perfect... Nate Locatelli Mr. Pisenti Period 1 11/2/17 Benjamin Franklin was the picture perfect self made man. From seemingly nothing, he became a successful musician, author, scientist, and printer. In his free time, he helped found and build a country. The key to Franklin s success was his desire and his need to constantly improve himself on all fronts. His quest for excellence began at only the age of 20. It was then that he thought of a program that would motivate and push him to possess more virtuous habits. Since he was also a perfectionist, he drew up a list of 13 virtues, and created a chart on which to keep track of his progress in living them. Each week he would focus on one virtue while also keeping track of the others. He would then move on to the next virtue and so on, eventually going through four cycles of each of the virtues in a single year. When he failed to live up to the ... Franklin examined how he had spent his hours and whether he had done the good things he had planned on doing, as well as if he had taken action on spontaneous opportunities to lend others a helping hand. Benjamin Franklin s moral and social philosophies inspired and still inspire millions around the world. Becoming a self made man is a long and tough task. Improve yourself, which will then improve the society around you. Slight slip ups are impossible to avoid when trying to follow strict ideals. Franklin s purpose was to make people aware of their inclinations and to help them overcome the natural tendencies of themselves, which would limit our dependence on other people. Everybody is supposed to achieve the American Dream today, regardless of who you are, where you came from, or what you do to get there. According to their math, equality of opportunity equals equality of outcome, and if it doesn t, rig the formula so it does. I read a couple of articles in nj.com recently. In one, a Rutgers Camden professor of Public Policy published a study that found that more poor people were being concentrated in small to mid size cities today compared to ten years ago. The other day I was in my backyard raking leaves, another chore my neighbors aren t into. I was looking around and noticed that three out of my four closest neighbor s properties were deteriorating. Fortunately, his heirs are taking care of the property until the estate is settled. I went online to look at my town s tax records. More often than not this can be done mentally or on paper before the tables are even added to the actual design. Since the Entity Relationship Diagram will also contain the appropriations amongst the attributes, as a common base to identify the entity type structure, than it is possible to then apply the normalization principles, all during the conceptual data modeling phase. It is reasonable to conclude, however, that the bomb did force the Japanese surrender and considerably sooner than it would have occurred otherwise. (Text 1 Page 8). Professor Higgins, after coming out of a theatre and hearing Eliza shouting in her harsh Cockney accent, places a bet with Colonel Pickering that he can take the Cockney working class girl and make her presentable in high society within six months. The working class girl, Eliza Doolittle (portrayed by Audrey Hepburn), agrees to speech lessons from Professor Higgins to improve her job prospects. In doing so, she not only provides insight into what will happen next but also further develops each of the characters through these complex symbols that she incorporates throughout the story. Carter first alludes to the outcome of the story by introducing the ruby choker that the Marquis gave as a wedding gift within the first few pages of the narrative. First a likelihood estimation model is built based on a gradient boosting model. This model is capable of identifying individuals at high risk of having BRCA mutations based on their family and personal history of cancers. Then, a Markov decision process (MDP) model is formulated to help BRCA mutation carriers and their health providers to find effective intervention actions (based on cost or quality adjusted life years) to prevent breast and ovarian cancers. Finally, a robust MDP (RMDP) model is presented to study the sensitivity of MDP optimal strategies under uncertainty. In what follows, I present a summary of findings in Chapters 2, 3, and 4 of this dissertation. In Chapter 2, four machine learning classifiers are used to find the likelihood of having BRCA mutation based on detailed personal and family history of cancer information. It s something that people say so frequently that it has become something of a clichГ©. Like most clichГ©s, though, it turns out that there s some truth to it. In 1865, a German chemist named Friedrich August Kekule von Stradonitz solved a problem that had been puzzling scientists for decades. He published a paper identifying the structure of benzene as a ring of carbon atoms. Years later, when he was giving a talk about how he made his breakthrough discovery, he credited it to a dream he d had. In the dream, he saw an image of a serpent swallowing its own tail, something that is called ouroboros. The symbol dates back to early Indian, Egyptian and Greek mythology. What Is The Mood Of The Tower Of Babel The Tower of Babel found in Genesis 11:1 9 tells the story of humanity s movement eastward and settling in the region of Babylon; where at that time, all the people spoke the same language. What unfolds is their quest to build a tower that would extend high into the heavens in order to make their name great and keep them from being scattered all over the earth. Also, the people s ingenuity is highlighted with the process of baking bricks rather than using traditional stone. As they are building, the LORD comes down, and views their effort as a problem; in which he proceeds to confuse their language and scatter them all over the face of the earth. Through this short narrative, the author communicates a profound transition between the depravity... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... First of which, Gary Schnittjer says, The human race defied God s instruction to multiply and fill the earth because they wanted to make a name for themselves (Schnittjer 1737). God has always been a sending God. He instructed Adam and Eve to fill the earth. He called Abraham to go to the land he would show him so that he could be a blessing to all nations. Jesus told the disciples to wait in Jerusalem until the Holy Spirit came on them, and then they would be his witness to the ends of the earth. Yet in the early church, what unfolds is mini Babel building. The disciples stay in Jerusalem, perhaps not to make their name great, but they are not fulfilling God s command to go and bless. Therefore, persecution breaks out. What can be learned from Genesis 11 and the rest of the Bible, is the church today must give attention going and blessing rather than codling and tower building. These characters are good examples of how Luhrman uses costume and makeup to effectively influence the portrayal and development of characters in the film. In Strictly Ballroom, Luhrman uses many different camera angles and lighting techniques to exaggerate scenes, settings and even characters personalities. An example of this is at the start of the film, when Scott Hastings is dancing by himself in a room, there is a bright, white spotlight on him as he dances, drawing the audience to watch him. This happens whenever Scott dances and it shows the audience that Scott has a sense of purity and that he is the protagonist of the film. Luhrman uses low angle shots when Scott and Fran are dancing at the end of the film, this is a good technique used so the audience can see them dancing and also gives the audience the impression that they are dominate and confident. • 35. Analysis Of The Painting Two Women Of The Woods By Vincent... On November 2013, at an auction in New York City, the painting Two women in the woods by Vincent Van Gogh, a famous Dutch artist in expressionism and impressionism, was sold at the price of $689,000 (Lot: 17 VINCENT VAN GOGH, 2013; Van Gogh, 2008). Besides, Silent Majority , a painting by Banksy, an English graffitiartist, was brought to the auction in Paris and its recent price has reached ВЈ445,792, which is roughly at $676,000 (Banksy, 2014; Banksy s Silent Majority fetches more than ВЈ445k in Paris, 2015). As they are clearly seen, the prices for the two paintings are about the same, which is interesting because one is obviously a well known artist all over the world, whereas the other one is known for his graffiti paintings, which is also considered to be an act of vandalism all along the walls in England. Therefore, what graffiti actually is and why there are two different perspectives on the characteristics of graffiti is a cute issue. This essay will oppose the idea that graffiti is vandalism by demonstrating two main points. First, graffiti is a type of art, and last but not least, graffiti can help develop the economic as well as the job opportunities for lower income class. Graffiti is more and more widely known and considered art. First of all, what is the definition of art? This model, now known as the internet, has become the most popular medium for data sharing, and communication. According to the U.S. Census in 2013, internet use at home tripled from 18 percent to 54.7 percent between 1997 and 2003 (U.S Census Bureau, 2013). The internet has been one of the fastest evolving technologies of humankind, and made its way into almost every progressive culture around the world. As a rapidly growing and popular technology, I believe it is important to look at the far reaches of the internet, to understand the potential consequences towards users. Sondheim s A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum In Sondheim s A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, the tradition of New Comedy is faithfully brought to life in a musical set in ancient Rome, but relevant to the sensibilities of its 1960 s audience. Through movie sets that suggest Roman surroundings, and comedic sequences that embody the spirit of the sixties, Sondheim creates a story where Roman characters, acting according to their types, draw in modern audience members and create a energetic romp through ancient Romethat is firmly rooted in the past, but could only have been taken in sixties era America. Many aspects of the film pay clear homage to New Comedy. The plot is simplistic, focusing on the desire of a young man to get around the restrictions of his parents and gain the affections of the girl he loves. The characters, although not boring, are one dimensional. Hero, the love sick youth, has one hope in the film: to unite himself with Philia. Pseudolus, his slave, only wishes to earn his freedom. The life s work of Erronius is to find his children, each bestowed with a ring bearing an engraved gaggle of geese; and so on through the inhabitants of this depiction of Rome. Each character does whatever it takes to achieve their one goal in life, and this is what builds the frenetic disposition of the plot, causing twists and turns especially where the very determined instigator Pseudolus is concerned. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... During this study, plasmids with ampicillin resistance (pAMP) known as pUC18, were manipulated due to their stability in extreme environments. The pUC18 plasmid pAMP gene codes for the production of beta lactamase, an enzyme utilized in the breakdown of ampicillin. Once E. coli obtains this gene, it is able to survive in an environment that is ampicillin rich. Lux plasmids were the second type used to provide bioluminescence in the cultures of E. coli grown. The lux plasmid contains genetic material which codes for luciferase, an enzyme which catalyzes bioluminescence, a light emitting reaction. This is considered the marker where transformation efficiency can be analyzed through the light emissions. Several techniques were implemented in this study to improve E. coli bacterias competency, the ability for a cell to uptake genetic material. These procedures were necessary considering the bacteria does not allow for transformation so efficiently in natural circumstances. Since it lacks the ability to do so, the uptake of material would be limited despite the preventative measures taken. To neutralize the negatively charged DNA in E. coli, the use of CaCl2 (sodium chloride), a positively charged solution, dissociates the calcium from chloride, which enters the cells and alters the charge. This process is known as electroporation. This causes the bacteria cells to swell and the calcium molecules help adjust the cell membrane to become ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The people, weapons, food, diseases, and technological advances (or disadvantages since it was the Dark Age) were all taught to us and now it is time to put it to the test. The Abbasid caliphate was finally abolished when Hulagu, the Mongol ruler, captured Baghdad in 1258, destroying much of the city including its incomparable libraries. While the Abbasids ruled in Baghdad, a number of powerful dynasties such as the Fatimids, Ayyubids and Mamluks held power in Egypt, Syria and Palestine. The most important event in this area as far as the relation between Islam and the Western world was concerned was the series of Crusades declared by the Pope and espoused by various European kings. The purpose, although political, was outwardly to recapture the Holy Land and especially Jerusalem for Christianity. Although there was at the beginning some success and local European rule was set up in parts of Syria and Palestine, Muslims finally prevailed and in 1187 Saladin, the great Muslim leader, recaptured Jerusalem and defeated the ...
