Snowpiercer Themes
Snowpiercer is a cinematic adaptation of the French graphic novel Le Transperceneige written by
Jacques Lob and Jean Marc Rochette and published in 1982. However, when given artistic freedom to
adjust the plot, characters, and overall theme of the original graphic novel, director Bong Joon ho
chose to interpret the film version with a completely new story and new characters in order to create a
new, dynamic Snowpiercer that was packed with cinematic exhilaration (Goldberg 3). His adaptation
of Le Transperceneige includes unique, thought provoking themes about class structure that did not
exist in the original graphic novel. Bong Joon ho s choice to alter the plot so drastically must be
examined in order to understand the overall meaning of the film. In the historical background of
Snowpiercer, Earth has undergone a drastic ice age as a result of a catastrophically misled attempt by
humans to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Humanity is neatly arranged on the train, Snowpiercer, with the creator Wilford in front, the wealthy
patrons behind him, the common people in the middle, and finally the impoverished in the tail. The
main plot of the film revolves around the rebellion of the tail section, which is led militarily by Curtis
Everett and intellectually by Gilliam. The film allows the audience to follow the Curtis Revolution
from beginning to the tragic end, exposing the flaws of a capitalist structured society through the
misfortunes that arise along the way. Because the conditions of the individual cars and the people who
inhabit them are so clearly progressing in quality as the setting moves forward, it might seem obvious
that Snowpiercer is an allegory of class culture. The controversial nature of Snowpiercer prompts
analysis of this new, critical perspective on

Renewable Energy Sources In The United States
The United States of America is large user of fossil fuels, such as petroleum, coal, and other fuels to
fuel things like cars, machines, fireplaces, and more. The US has considered using alternative energy
sources, such as solar panels, to power their devices. Some people believe that we should keep using
fossil fuels because they cost less.
Renewable energy sources are good for the environment but some people frown upon the idea of
having renewable energy sources. They are more expensive than fossil fuels and nonrenewable energy
sources. A Lot of energy needs to be put in both the research and manufacturing of nonrenewable
resources. Renewable energy sources are cheaper because of the energy source already having the
components in order

Child Poverty And Its Effect On A Child s Foundation Of...
The Cycle Continues
With the amount of poverty in our nation, it seems that it is the least of our concern. If we put as much
effort in ending poverty as we do in fighting each other in a race war, we might actually get
somewhere on both grounds. Though there are many studies that have been done on the difference of
education level among race or ethnicity, one thing has been proven, no matter the color or ethnicity of
the child, studies have proved that students who live in poverty score well below average (Lacoure
and Tissington) socially and academically. Children that suffer from poverty are one point three times
more likely to have developmental delays or learning disabilities than those who don t live in poverty
(11 Facts about Education and Poverty in America). Child poverty can affect a child s foundation of
life long skill that they will use as building blocks in creating relationship with teachers and their
fellow peer. Through poverty the intellectual ability and brain growth of a child can be interfered with
if a child s emotional needs are not met, in turn creating hardships that will follow them throughout
life.
It has been shown through many reported studies that a child s performance in life can be affected by
the level of family income. Though there are many ways that these children can be helped through
providing material things, meeting a child s necessity of affection and attention at home is something
that cannot be bought. Anthony W. Orlando wrote

Comparison Of O. Henry
William Sydney Porter, more commonly known by his pen name O. Henry, was a short story author;
he is well known throughout the world for his clever wordplay and unexpected endings. O. Henry´s
technique to gain inspiration for his writing was by observing and talking to the people he met while
moving around the U.S. His constant travelling occurred due to the loss of his job because he was
accused of embezzlement. O. Henry´s bountiful writing period began in 1902 in New York City,
where he wrote 381 short stories. His trademark is his plot twist endings and his characterization of
the creative ways used to solve difficult situations. ¨Ransom of Red Chief¨, ¨The Purple Dress¨, ¨The
Gift of the Magi¨, and ¨The Last Leaf¨ are all short stories written by O. Henry that have many
similarities, but are different at the same time. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This can be seen all throughout the story as the ¨captive¨ boy terrorizes Bill. O. Henry writes, ¨Every
few minutes he would remember that he was a pesky redskin, and pick up his stick rifle and tiptoe to
the mouth of the cave to rubber for the scouts of the hated paleface. Now and then he would let out a
warwhoop that made Old Hank the Trapper, shiver. That boy had Bill terrorized from the start.¨ The
boy´s capturers, besides Bill, find the boy and his lack of concern for being kidnapped very amusing.
¨Yes, sir, that boy seemed to be having the time of his life. The fun of camping out in a cave had made
him forget that he was a captive himself. He immediately christened me Snake eye, the spy, and
announced that, when his braves returned from the warpath, I was to be broiled at the stake at the

Comcast s Residential Brand Xfinity- Essay
Comcast s residential brand Xfinity has already released a video monitoring product for its market.
Even though this gives Comcast Business a framework for the launch of the Smart Office product,
there are still risks to take into account before the launch of this new project. Anticipated/possible
risks include:
1. Potential Bottleneck due to lead time with Camera Orders
a. This is the first time Comcast Business has worked with Axis, our video camera supplier. To stay
lean Comcast will be ordering only what is needed for pending orders. If demand is high, customers
may have to endure long wait times for installation because of camera inventory at the local Comcast
warehouse/Technician dispatch center.
2. Inability to measure demand in new markets
a. Comcast has only trialed this product in select Northeastern US states. Demand is currently
unknown in other regions. Competition is low, but this does not necessarily present and opportunity
for high demand.
3. Potentially being forced to use 3rd Party install technicians
a. For standard internet or phone installations, Comcast will sometimes utilize contractors to complete
the work. This is usually when order volume is high, as we do not have enough technicians to
complete all orders in a timely manner. We have received customer feedback that the contractors are
not as knowledgeable as internal staff, and do not provide the same high quality work. If Comcast is
forced to utilize 3rd party technicians, quality of the Smart

Partition of India
The Partition Of India part 1 Independence
The british ruled over India for over two centuries, introducing systems, ideas, and practices into the
indian culture. In 1935, The Government of India Act was the most recent time India had been
governed, and the government had a fair amount of responsibility. The already existing social order
influenced the nationalist movement, and the leaders being chosen. India developed a federal
government, with three legislative lists of power. The constitution of India is federal but also includes
a strong central government, with power over the union. The central government has power over the
states even though they are supposed to be autonomous. The new constitution of india separates itself
greatly from its british ruled past, just not necessarily politically. For example, new fundamental rights
were provided in this constitution for the first time, however the idea of suffrage was also introduced
by this constitution. There was much social and economic reform that took place due to them trying to
break away from their british past. https://books.google.com/books?hl=en lr= id=dtKe6XV8z7wC

Peenemunde Research Paper
Beginning from deep within the depths of Nazi held territory to appearing on virtually every
continent. Ballistic Missiles have had a long history dating back to 1939 and the beginning of the V
Weapons program, and have been around in one way or another for over 70 years, indeed the advent
of modern missile technology has changed the face of modern warfare and politics, and coupled with
the advent of the two stage hydrogen bomb, they have now brought humanity the closest to another
World War. Ballistic missile development, proliferation, and usage have had one of the largest and
most profound impacts on modern warfare and international politics. On the cold and misty morning
of October 3rd, 1942 Wernher Von Braun and his team at the remote baltic island of Peenemunde
stood around a launch console from their safety bunker looking upon the apex of their years of
engineering. For years the team at Peenemunde, under the direct orders of the Führer himself labored
building the most technologically advanced weapon system ever devised, in an operation rivaling the
scale of the Manhattan project. For years the RAF under the command of Bomber Harris ... Show

velocities as compared to a ballistic missile, which as previously stated follows a ballistic trajectory
similar to that of artillery fire. They however are typically guided by the same systems, almost
exclusively using either GPS guidance or inertial gyroscopic guidance, however by virtue of their low
flying nature, cruise missiles tend to be far more accurate, but with modern guidance systems this

The Story Of Genji
Genji lit the candles as he set them up around the room. He discovered earlier that the power to the
building shut off once the tours were finished. He walked out onto the balcony as the moon hung high
up in the sky. The faint honking and shouting of the city filled the air as the wind whirled into his
bedroom. Slowly, he sat down on the ground as he crossed his legs. His left hand remained expended
as his right closed into his palm. His eyes fell closed as he took a deep breath, the whirl of his vents
filled his ears. He was used to it by now, it was his rhythm it allowed him to relax. Genji called out to
his dragon hoping to receive an answer this time. When he tried earlier he was answered with
complete silence. Relax, Genji. The ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

No, I m not. I believe this was a mistake master. Genji stated as he rubbed his hands together. The

Anselm s Existence of God Refuted Essay
Anselm s Existence of God Refuted
Anselm s Existence of God Refuted
If the only proofs for the existence of God were Aquinas s five ways and Anselm s ontological
argument, in my opinion, Anselm provides the best reasoning. I am not saying that Anselm s argument
is good, or even valid, but just that given the set of proofs by Aquinas and Anselm, Anselm s is better.
Anselm argues, in effect, that the existence of God is built into the very concept of God. He proceeds
by a form of argument called reductio ad absurdum reduction to absurdity. He attempts to show that
the position of the fool the non believer who has said in his heart, There is no God is incoherent and
leads to absurdity. (Cottingham, 1996: 246)
How does ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
However, just because something exists in the understanding, we would not normally conclude that it
also exists in reality. As Anselm himself points out, a painter may have the completed work of art in
his mind, but that does not make it a real painting. (Cottingham, 1996: 246)
What Anselm tries to show next is that in this case, having an idea in the understanding requires one to
admit that the thing exists in reality as well. For suppose that God exists only in the understanding.
Then we can conceive of a greater being: one who exists in reality as well. Moreover, that would mean
that this God who exists only in the understanding is not the greatest conceivable being. (Cottingham,
1996: 246)
Now we have a contradiction.
Now come to the case of God. The GCB would have to be wise, because a wise being is greater than a
being that is not wise. In addition, the GCB would have to be just, because justice is better than
injustice. What Anselm is claiming is that the GCB must also exist, because a being that exists in
reality is greater than one that exists merely in the understanding. So:
It would be a contradiction to say; God (the GCB) is not wise
It would be a contradiction to say, God is not just.
In addition, it would be a contradiction to say, God does not exist.
There are many arguments as to why Anselm s argument is invalid. I have chosen three of them, and
have illustrated how these arguments make Anselm s

King Charles V Research Paper
Let s start with Protestants. The time period I m going to be talking about was when King Charles V
was in charge. King Charles V was the Holy Roman Emperor of Spain and many low countries. While
he was ruling, in 1530, many German Princes joined Lutheranism and opposed him. Due to that he
became controlling and many others join Lutheranism as well. Charles V waged war on Protestant
Germany to try and get control back to the catholic church he did not do so great. But there are some
other people who came up with new religions as well, like John Calvin who started Calvinism. Calvin
also published a book in 1536 called Institutes of the Christian Religion . King Henry VIII came up
with Englanism because he wanted to divorce his wife. Now to

Discuss The Advantages And Disadvantages Of Removable...
Adverse effects of removable partial denture on the periodontium
Prosthesis as a term is defined as the artificial appliance which intends to replace a lost part of the
human body. Moreover, prosthodontics is a branch in dentistry that deals with the replacement of
missing teeth and associated structures to restore both function and esthetics. Given that,
prosthodontics if branched as fixed prosthodontic, removable prosthodontics which includes: complete
denture and partial denture, and finally maxillofacial prosthodontics.
Removable partial denture is one of the crucial prosthetics used for partially edentulous patients. It s
used for patients who desire to replace one or more missing teeth in his/her oral cavity for functional
and esthetic demands. However, its indications varies for a case to a case.
As the population of our constantly changing world is increasing, the demands of removal partial

One of the main disadvantages of removal of partial denture is that it has a higher tendency to
accumulate plaque which affects the periodontal health of the abutment teeth. There are factors that
determine the retention of plaque by the denture such as the material of denture, oral hygiene of the
patient, or susceptible areas of plaque accumulation. The adverse effects of accumulation of plaque is
tremendous and is capable of producing severe oral inflammations in the oral tissues as well as other
oral diseases. Generally speaking, the oral hygiene of the patient is causative factor of determining the
success of any denture produced from any

Explain Why Cell Biology Embodies All The Principles Of Life
1. Cell biology embodies all the principles of life
2. Cells are small because they are limited by the surface area to volume ratio. The volume of the cell
allows for the total number of chemical activity it carries out during an amount of time. The surface
area of a cell determines the number of substances that go into the cell from the outside of the cell. It
is also determined by the number of waste products that are able to go to the environment. The cell
must be a certain volume in order to allow for a big enough surface area to volume ratio which lets
substances in and out of the cell as well as allowing chemical reactions to occur.
3. The plasma membrane is important to cells because it is a selectively permeable barrier which does

The Change Of Corporate Dividend Policy
There have also been significant changes in corporate payout policy over this period.
According to the Constant payout ratio, a firm will pay a fixed dividend rate e.g. 40% of earnings.
The dividend per share would therefore fluctuate as the earnings per share changes. Dividends are
directly dependent on the firm s earnings ability and if no profits are made any dividends are paid.
This policy creates uncertainty to ordinary shareholders, especially who rely on dividend income and
might demand a higher required rate of return (Gitman, 1998).
Constant Amount Per Share or Fixed Dividend Per Share is where the dividend per share (DPS) is
fixed in amount irrespective of the earnings levels. This creates certainty and is therefore preferred by
shareholders who have a high reliance on dividend income. It protects the firm from periods of low
earnings by fixing, DPS at a low level. This policy treats all shareholders by giving a fixed return. The
DPS could be increased to a higher level if earnings appear relatively permanent and sustainable.
Under the Constant Dividend Per Share Plus Extra/ Surplus policy, a constant DPS is paid every year.
However extra dividends are paid in years of supernormal earnings. It gives the firm flexibility to
increase dividends when earnings are high and participate in supernormal earnings. The extra
dividends are given in such a way that it is not perceived as a commitment by the firm to continue the
extra dividend in the future. It is applied by

The Knights Of Labor During The Civil Era
As Napoleon Hill once said, Every adversity, every failure, every heartache carries with it the seed of
an equal or greater benefit . This holds true to the Knights of Labor in their endeavor to increase
solidarity and unity, by encouraging opposing communities to work together, thus improving the lives
of workers and their families during the diminutive period of time when the Knights of Labor were
active. The Knight s tackled the monopolists and fought for the justices they knew to be theirs, in
strong efforts to improve societal inequalities organizing groups of workers throughout different
classes of sex, race, and skill. The major impacts that the Knights of Labor had on society during their
peak, as well as in the future, can be illustrated by 3 principal criteria that this paper will be
centralized around. Firstly, the Knights of Labor were dreamers they encouraged people to look
forward and take action against poor circumstances and lack of power; because of this, they were
ahead of other labour organizations during this time as the Knights fought against what others said to
be unalterable. Second, the Knights of Labor brought disparate groups together, forging the way to a
progressive society in the height of an otherwise racist and sexist one. Lastly, the Knights of Labor
drew a significant expansion of wage earnings across North America providing many people with
secure jobs and a culture in which they were protected by unity.

The Pattern And Content Of East Asian Economic Integration
4.1.1. The Pattern and Content of East Asian Economic Integration
The most representative regional economic organization in East Asia is ASEAN, which was
established in Bangkok and formed by five founding members, Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines,
Singapore, and Thailand. Brunei, Laos, Myanmar, Vietnam and Cambodia also joined successively to
form the ten countries of ASEAN. ASEAN is abbreviated by Association of Southeast Asian Nations,
which was built to contain the Communist forces with the purpose to steady military affairs and
political neutrality initially. According to Tong (2005), the content of East Asian economic integration
can be classified as Free Trade Agreement (FTA) and Comprehensive Economic Partnership (CEP).
Previously, East Asian economic integration focuses on the operation of FTA which applies the zero
tariffs on member countries; nowadays, economic cooperation agreement is inclined to CEP which
contains wider issues of economic cooperation such as tariff reduction, deregulation of investment
policy, enlargement of factors of production and etc. to draw the relation between member nations and
achieve a higher level of integration (Jin, 2003). Moreover, the continuing goal of ASEAN is to
promote the inter regional economic development, enhance the partnership and maintain the peace in
the region (Taiwan ASEAN Studies Center, 2014). Before Asian financial crisis, ASEAN is a
representative of the regional economic organization that especially focuses on

Aboriginal Youth Suicide
Secondly, the federal government of Canada funding towards suicide prevention programs in
Aboriginal communities helps stop youth suicide. First Nation youths are 5 to 6 times more likely to
commit suicide compared to non aboriginal youths (Kassam, 2017). A community based suicide
prevention program is a key to helping stop the aboriginal youth suicide crisis. For instance, another
northern Ontario First Nation community, Wapekeka, was a leader in suicide prevention (Kassam,
2017). Wapekeka First Nation s suicide prevention program was working until the federal government
cut funding towards the program and the spokesperson for Wapekeka First Nation, Joshua Frogg said,

In addition, the program offered healing to the community still healing from the legacy of colonialism.
If the federal government kept funding the suicide prevention program there would not have been a
spike in suicide rates in the community. Furthermore, a psychologist at the University of Victoria,
Christopher Lalonde, believes the key to stopping suicides is rooted in the communities (McCue,
2016). From two decades of researching, he found that the communities that are the least culturally
healthy have a higher rate of youth suicide (McCue, 2016). Also, the mental wellness of aboriginal
youths is not only about being mentally healthy but also having a balance between Aboriginal youths
families, communities, and the environment (Khan, 2008). Therefore, it will be better that Aboriginal
suicide prevention programs are created by Aboriginal communities to target the prevalence issues in
their communities with some assistance from the government to set it up and fund

Most Dangerous Cult Research Paper
Did you know that America is home to come of the most dangerous cults in history? Cults began in
America as early as the 1930s, and they still exist today! By definition, a cult is any group which
employs mind control and deceptive recruiting techniques (How Cults Work). Although people may
know what a cult it, they may not know how potentially dangerous a cult is.
Cults can be evil and mind controlling. They can also be extremely dangerous. According to Rick
Ross, an expert consultant and intervention specialist, there are several signs of a potentially unsafe
group or leader. These signs include: absolute authoritarianism without meaningful accountability;
there is no legitimate reason to leave, former followers are always wrong in leaving, negative or even
evil; followers can never be good enough; and the group or leader is the exclusive means of knowing
the truth or receiving validation, no other process or discovery is really acceptable or credible. Cult

Muslin In Jane Austen s Northanger Abbey
The muslin dress was the most symbolic item associated with Regency women fashion. The word
muslin could be used for both fabric and dress made of it. It is plain woven light soft cotton fabric
without a pattern. Muslin was used as a foundation of a dress or as dress by itself.
Jane Austen exhibited her real interest in fabrics and fashion through her writing, but muslin in
particular played an important role in her novel s characters lives. In her novel Northanger Abbey ,
heroine Catherine Morland asks Henry Tilney on the first time she met him in the Lower Rooms in

Nazi Party s Ascent To Power
During the period of 1933 to 1945, the treatment of the Jewish people by the Germans changed and
was influenced by the ideals and beliefs had by the Nazi Party in power at the time. This event in
history is named the Holocaust and the changes that occurred during this time will be accounted for in
this report. In the lead up to 1933, the Nazi Party worked to gain the support of the German people by
presenting them with the idea of a perfect Germany. This desirable Germany would be traditional,
hard working and abolish the Republican system of government for which they believed was the
source of all hardships experienced in Germany after the commencement of WW1. It was presented to
the people that this perfect Germany could only be achieved ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

From as early as the 11th century, the Jewish race was looked upon as having rebelled against the true
religion of Christianity throughout Christian Europe. This clash of beliefs ultimately led to outbursts
of hatred towards the Jewish people in what became known as violent pogroms. Pogroms were seen
throughout Europe up until as late as the 20th century and anti Semitism movements were experienced
during the Weimar Republic in Germany. Many right wing organisations blamed the Jewish people for
the loss of WW1, claiming that they did not serve properly at the front line and were instead profiting
from the war itself. This hatred grew at the commencement of the war, when Jewish politician,
Matthias Erzberger, who had openly opposed it in 1917, subsequently signed the Armistice. The
Germans saw the signing of the Armistice and later on the Treaty of Versailles, as an admittance of
guilt for the cause of the war and believed that they were now seen as weak and cowardly among other

My Dream Of A Fashion Institute Of Technology
When applying to colleges, everyone has a goal in their mind that they are looking forward to
accomplishing. I also have an aim and plan which I want to execute in the best way possible. The first
and most crucial thing that holds immense importance in fulfilling your dream is the college one
chooses to go to. I chose Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT) for many reasons, Starting off by
mentioning the wide variety of business and marketing programs they provide. Moreover, the
community of the college is known to be one of the best in New York, with a beautiful campus and
especially for me, the commute is a great steal. While applying to colleges, FIT caught my attention
the most. This was the only college, whom I see myself graduating from in four years with my dream
of a bachelor degree in marketing. The reason why I chose marketing is that I have always been a
social person who loves talking and most importantly I am an extremely organized person who knows
how to perform her tasks very well. So that is why I see myself working as a marketing manager for
big companies like Google and Apple.
While thousands of students will be applying to FIT, the question is What makes me the perfect
candidate for FIT and what makes me stand out? Well, unlike most students that mainly only are
concerned about their GPA and spend all their high school years in studying, I just did not study but
also took all advantages of my school clubs and community service opportunities. During my

Most Influential Jazz Singer, Billie Holiday
Billie Holiday The Harlem Renaissance was an African American cultural movement specifically in
creative arts such as music and literature. Jazz represented the flavor and zest of African American
culture in the 1920s 1940s. Billie Holiday had a great impact on the Harlem Renaissance because she
was one of the most influential jazz singers of all time. She performed with other great jazz musicians
such as Louis Armstrong, Teddy Wilson, Jo Jones, and Henry Allen. Her career as a jazz singer was an
incredible and thriving one, however, it was shortened because of her battle of substance abuse.
Despite the drug use and the loss of her mother, the only thing she could turn to was her music. Billie
Holiday s legacy will always live on when the discussion of the Harlem Renaissance is present. Billie
Holiday was born on April 7, 1915 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania under her birth name, Eleanora
Fagan. Billie Holiday was an American jazz singer, from the 1930s to the 50s. All her life she lived
with her mother because she did not know her biological father. She grew up in Baltimore, Maryland

Holiday found a job at a Harlem nightclub. This job will encourage her to pursue a career in music and
go on tour with other great artists. She borrowed her professional stage name from her favorite screen

Water Supply In California
The second largest consumer of California water is public supply. Public supply has to do with both
public and private water suppliers, which provide water to others. Public supply water usages would
have to deal with domestic, commercial, industrial purposes, and public serves such as pool, parks,
firefighting, etc. Public water supply plays a huge role in many counties, and communities. The reason
why is because the public water supply systems that are located in these counties/communities are
government or facilities that are privately run. These public water supply systems are what provides
people with water to use on an everyday basis. The water that is contribute to humans from the public

Wal Mart Stock Analysis Essay
I. Executive Summary
The purpose of this report is to evaluate the stock price of Wal Mart Stores Inc. (which ticker symbol

worth to invest in the long term because of the potential growth of market shares and revenue.
Besides, based on P/E method and Gordon model, WMT price is undervalued; therefore, if investors
buy the stock, they will get benefit not only in capital gain but also in dividend cash inflow.

Beta is the slope of the characteristic line. As shown in appendix1, we use the monthly historical data
from April 2003 to April 2008 to graph SCL. We use S P 500 as the market because it contains the
stocks of 500 Large Cap corporations and can reflect the market change broadly. As shown in exhibit
1, we can get the SCL: Ri Rf = 0.001 + 0.1649(Rm Rf). So the beta is 0.1649 and the alpha (intercept)
is 0.001. From the regression line, we find the R square is only 0.103. It reflects the degree that X
variable explains Y variable is 10.3%. That is, Ri Rf has no close relationship with Rm Rf. In addition,
due to the fact that beta is only 0.1649, it also provides the same result which Ri Rf and Rm Rf have
no strong positive relationship. It is a good issue to consider why Wal Mart stock return does not relate
with S P 500 return very well. From exhibit 2, we find the Wal Mart price did not change very much
while S P 500 price went up. The major reasons may be that S P 500 includes many high tech stocks
and those stocks performed very well during the period; therefore the volatility is greater than Wal
Mart. Moreover, maybe Wal Mart has lower weight in S P 500 so its trend of price change is different
from S P 500. From exhibit2, we also find Wal Mart had good relationship with S P 500 before 2004.
To examine the situation, we use the data from 1998 to 2003 and find the SCL

the impact of contemporary society and the idea of mass media on values. Andy s father Ondrej

This might explain Andy s later fascination with death related topics. In 1930 Andy s father got a
steady job laying roads and moving houses. This was a high paying job at the time because of the
mass rate of growth in the cities. Ondrej saved his money and one year later moved his family into a
larger house on Beelan Street. Shortly after moving into the house Ondrej lost his job and was forced
to move into a two bedroom apartment. The rent was six dollars a week and Andy s father had to work
odd jobs to just barley pay the rent. It was not just Andy and his parents. Andy had two other brothers,
one older and one younger. All three of the children were said to be afraid of their father. Dad didn t
like us to start commotion because he was so exhausted and he would get emotionally upset. Usually
all he had to do was look at you. (Beckris 12) Andy always had a problem with grammar school. He

Theme Of Social Class In Pride And Prejudice
Most living creatures abide by a social structure of some sort. Between groups of animals there is the
dominance of the Alpha, and the submission of the Omega. Among humans, there is a similar setup,
but rather than size and strength, other factors often come into play. Wealth and status with others
make for a bigger social ladder among human beings, and this can cause many weaknesses in the way
people treat one another, and think. There are some who embrace these problems, and some who wish
to change it. Sometimes, it is something as simple as a piece of writing that addresses these issues. In
her novel Pride and Prejudice, Jane Austen uses her characters to break common social class structure,
and reveal that it is actions that define a person, and not circumstance.
In Pride and Prejudice, many of the characters reveal a depth that reaches beyond what is perceived by
even other characters, already revealing the kinks in social class. The main male protagonist, Mr.
Fitzwilliam Darcy is one of the most controversial characters, and from the very beginning has two
sides to him that show a person underneath the circumstantial shell. In the article Themes and
Construction: Pride and Prejudice it is noted that What separates Elizabeth and Darcy from the silly
minor characters [...] is their ability and willingness to learn and grow, to overcome their initial
shortcomings (Themes). It is undeniable that Darcy began with amount considerable amount of both
pride and

How Is Randle Mcmurphy A Trickster
The novel One Flew Over the Cuckoo s Nest, by Ken Kesey, presents a mischievous character
inspired by the mythological trickster. Bearing many strong resemblances to the trickster archetype,
this man of the name Randle Patrick McMurphy strives to transform the new world into which he was
placed as many mythological tricksters do. By taking advantage of his natural talents and traits, he
shapes the ward to his will and disrupts the natural order of things. In One Flew Over the Cuckoo s

ward s rules, he replies: Ya know, ma am, ya know that is the ex act thing somebody always tells me
about the rules... just when they figure I m about to do the dead opposite (Kesey, 24). What this first
impression describes in McMurphy is not only that he will not be molded by the authorities, but he
will in fact disrupt their system. Much like the Coyote, if certain rules do not agree with his objectives,
he will have no trouble breaking them. A second example of this rebellious behavior is shown at then

Ethnology Of Marcel Mauss The Gift
The Power of Giving Marcel Mauss ethnology The Gift was originally published in 1925. In this
ethnology, Mauss aimed to answer the question In primitive or archaic types of society what is the
principle whereby the gift received has to be repaid? What force is there in the thing given which
compels the recipient to make a return? (1) He successfully answered this through extensive research
by comparing cultures in Polynesia, Melanesia, and North West America. He found that the structure
of gift giving included power entitlement more from the giver than the receiver. The Gift was a good

One common theme was potlatch. According to the online dictionary, a potlatch is a ceremonial feast
where possessions are destroyed or given away to display wealth or enhance prestige .(source) This
was shown to exist in multiple cultures. This knowledge made it known to the reader that gift giving
comes along with prestations. There are certain obligations and expectations that come along with gift
giving, and it is typically the prestations that are most important. One important prestation is the
formation of relationships, as these events typically focus on groups rather than individuals. Mauss
even stated For it is groups, and not individuals, which carry on exchange, make contracts, and are
bound by obligations . (3) He showed the importance of relationships over material gifts and how they
affected several people at once. Another common prestation that was considered important was the
purity of the gift. Mauss stated, Another theme plays its part in the economy and morality of the gift:
that of the gift made to men in the sight of gods or nature. (12) The people of the discussed cultures
did believe each gift had its own personality. That is why it was a typical act for the donor to receive
acceptance and approval from the gods before giving a gift. It is through the understanding of these
two themes, that the readers are more able to understand the complex way in which other cultures
exchange gifts. These two ideas were able to be applied to all of the cultures discussed when analyzed

Love And Loss In The Wanderer s The Wanderer
The major themes were mourning of the lost, enduring pain of one s heart, yearning for dear one s
love, and putting time as a fault for these grievances.
In The Wanderer, the man mourns for his former position of a warrior who had a great lord, friends,
and joy. He sought for comfort and a companion One acquainted with pain understands how cruel a
traveling companion sorrow is for someone with few friends at his side (line 29 31) but he soon forces
himself to endure pain by stating that A wise man must be patient, not too hot of his heart nor hasty of

path (line 65 72) and A good man holds his words back, tells his woes not too soon, baring his inner
heart before knowing the best way, an eorl who acts with courage (line 112 113). He then blames the
time by stating that his friends disappeared so suddenly from his life like seagulls flying away from

of exile. She also forces herself to endure the pain If ever anyone should feel anguish, harsh pain at

Political Parties And Democratic Parties
The political party is an organization of people who share similar ideas about the way the country
should be governed. Political parties perform important tasks in government. In fact, political parties
select candidates and check the other party. Political parties also inform the public. Most importantly,
they organize the government (Political Parties, n.d.). The history of U.S political parties begins with
the Federalists and their opponents the Anti Federalists who became the Democratic Republicans. Two
major political parties in the United States today, however, are Democrats and Republicans. The U.S is
one of the very few countries with only two dominant parties and there is so much attention focused
on only two parties in the United State. Why Only Two Parties (n.d) explained that the two party
system in the U.S is largely due to what is called plurality voting in single member districts, also
means, winner takes all voting system. In addition, the two parties, Democrats and Republicans, have
essentially crowded out the other minor parties. It makes extremely difficult for someone from one of
those parties to become elected (Ch. 7). These two parties, the Democrats and Republicans, survived
through the decades and they have contrasting beliefs that distinguish them from one another.
Firstly, of the two current major political parties, the one with oldest roots is the Democratic Party.

Research – Methodology and Ethics
RESEARCH METHODOLOGY AND ETHICS
This essay attempts to identify and sum up two research methods (Qualitative and Quantitative
Research Methods), assess their relative strengths and weaknesses and explain how two ethical issues
arise from research. Qualitative and Quantitative research approaches are two of the various methods
used in sociological research. The use of these methods can be very important and can normally
produce efficient, realistic and logical results.
So what is qualitative research and what is quantitative research? To begin with, we look at the
distinctions between the forms of research. Thus, on first consideration, the use of questionnaires as a
research technique might be seen as a quantitative strategy, whereas ... Show more content on

Qualitative descriptions can play the important role of suggesting possible relationships, causes,
effects and dynamic processes.
Because statistics are not used, but rather qualitative research uses a more descriptive, narrative style,
this research might be of particular benefit to the practitioner as she, or he could turn to qualitative
reports in order to examine forms of knowledge that might otherwise be unavailable, thereby gaining
new insight.
Qualitative research adds flesh and blood to social analysis.
Both qualitative and quantitative research methods have some similarities, for instance, whilst
quantitative research may be mostly used for testing theory, it can also be used for exploring area and
generating hypotheses and theory. Similarly qualitative research can be used for testing hypotheses
and theories even though it is mostly used for theory generation.
Qualitative data often includes quantification, e.g. statements such as more than, less than, most as
well as specific numbers, quantitative, i.e. questionnaire approaches can collect qualitative data
through open ended questions.
ETHICAL ISSUES IN QUANTITATIVE RESEARCH
During the designing of questionnaires and the training of interviewers a number of ethical issues need
to be taken into consideration. Respondents have a right to be informed about the nature and purposes
of the study and how the information will be used prior to data collection. The issue of anonymity,

Abstract William Edwards Deming was known to many as one of the Great Quality Pioneers. He was
born in Sioux City, Iowa and eventually became a statician. He attended school in a one room school

with his doctorate and worked at Western Electric where he learned of Walter Shewharts theory of
quality control. After studying with Shewhart for several years Deming used his theory of statistical
control as the basis of his own work. (Wikipedia). Deming was able to help the United States Bureau
of the Census in it first sampling experiment. Then during WWII the techniques that he used for
wartime production faded away and he ended up working in Japan after they lost the war to help
rebuild their economy. While working with Japanese scientists and engineers Deming helped their

  • 2. Snowpiercer Themes Snowpiercer is a cinematic adaptation of the French graphic novel Le Transperceneige written by Jacques Lob and Jean Marc Rochette and published in 1982. However, when given artistic freedom to adjust the plot, characters, and overall theme of the original graphic novel, director Bong Joon ho chose to interpret the film version with a completely new story and new characters in order to create a new, dynamic Snowpiercer that was packed with cinematic exhilaration (Goldberg 3). His adaptation of Le Transperceneige includes unique, thought provoking themes about class structure that did not exist in the original graphic novel. Bong Joon ho s choice to alter the plot so drastically must be examined in order to understand the overall meaning of the film. In the historical background of Snowpiercer, Earth has undergone a drastic ice age as a result of a catastrophically misled attempt by humans to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Humanity is neatly arranged on the train, Snowpiercer, with the creator Wilford in front, the wealthy patrons behind him, the common people in the middle, and finally the impoverished in the tail. The main plot of the film revolves around the rebellion of the tail section, which is led militarily by Curtis Everett and intellectually by Gilliam. The film allows the audience to follow the Curtis Revolution from beginning to the tragic end, exposing the flaws of a capitalist structured society through the misfortunes that arise along the way. Because the conditions of the individual cars and the people who inhabit them are so clearly progressing in quality as the setting moves forward, it might seem obvious that Snowpiercer is an allegory of class culture. The controversial nature of Snowpiercer prompts analysis of this new, critical perspective on ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Renewable Energy Sources In The United States The United States of America is large user of fossil fuels, such as petroleum, coal, and other fuels to fuel things like cars, machines, fireplaces, and more. The US has considered using alternative energy sources, such as solar panels, to power their devices. Some people believe that we should keep using fossil fuels because they cost less. Renewable energy sources are good for the environment but some people frown upon the idea of having renewable energy sources. They are more expensive than fossil fuels and nonrenewable energy sources. A Lot of energy needs to be put in both the research and manufacturing of nonrenewable resources. Renewable energy sources are cheaper because of the energy source already having the components in order ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Child Poverty And Its Effect On A Child s Foundation Of... The Cycle Continues With the amount of poverty in our nation, it seems that it is the least of our concern. If we put as much effort in ending poverty as we do in fighting each other in a race war, we might actually get somewhere on both grounds. Though there are many studies that have been done on the difference of education level among race or ethnicity, one thing has been proven, no matter the color or ethnicity of the child, studies have proved that students who live in poverty score well below average (Lacoure and Tissington) socially and academically. Children that suffer from poverty are one point three times more likely to have developmental delays or learning disabilities than those who don t live in poverty (11 Facts about Education and Poverty in America). Child poverty can affect a child s foundation of life long skill that they will use as building blocks in creating relationship with teachers and their fellow peer. Through poverty the intellectual ability and brain growth of a child can be interfered with if a child s emotional needs are not met, in turn creating hardships that will follow them throughout life. It has been shown through many reported studies that a child s performance in life can be affected by the level of family income. Though there are many ways that these children can be helped through providing material things, meeting a child s necessity of affection and attention at home is something that cannot be bought. • 5. Comparison Of O. Henry William Sydney Porter, more commonly known by his pen name O. Henry, was a short story author; he is well known throughout the world for his clever wordplay and unexpected endings. O. Henry´s technique to gain inspiration for his writing was by observing and talking to the people he met while moving around the U.S. His constant travelling occurred due to the loss of his job because he was accused of embezzlement. O. Henry´s bountiful writing period began in 1902 in New York City, where he wrote 381 short stories. His trademark is his plot twist endings and his characterization of the creative ways used to solve difficult situations. ¨Ransom of Red Chief¨, ¨The Purple Dress¨, ¨The Gift of the Magi¨, and ¨The Last Leaf¨ are all short stories written by O. Henry that have many similarities, but are different at the same time. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This can be seen all throughout the story as the ¨captive¨ boy terrorizes Bill. O. Henry writes, ¨Every few minutes he would remember that he was a pesky redskin, and pick up his stick rifle and tiptoe to the mouth of the cave to rubber for the scouts of the hated paleface. Now and then he would let out a warwhoop that made Old Hank the Trapper, shiver. That boy had Bill terrorized from the start.¨ The boy´s capturers, besides Bill, find the boy and his lack of concern for being kidnapped very amusing. ¨Yes, sir, that boy seemed to be having the time of his life. The fun of camping out in a cave had made him forget that he was a captive himself. He immediately christened me Snake eye, the spy, and announced that, when his braves returned from the warpath, I was to be broiled at the stake at the rising of the sun¨, is a quote describing the humor one of the capturers sees in the boy´s antics. While this short story by O. Henry is humorous, not all of them ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 6. Comcast s Residential Brand Xfinity- Essay Comcast s residential brand Xfinity has already released a video monitoring product for its market. Even though this gives Comcast Business a framework for the launch of the Smart Office product, there are still risks to take into account before the launch of this new project. Anticipated/possible risks include: 1. Potential Bottleneck due to lead time with Camera Orders a. This is the first time Comcast Business has worked with Axis, our video camera supplier. To stay lean Comcast will be ordering only what is needed for pending orders. If demand is high, customers may have to endure long wait times for installation because of camera inventory at the local Comcast warehouse/Technician dispatch center. 2. Inability to measure demand in new markets a. Comcast has only trialed this product in select Northeastern US states. Demand is currently unknown in other regions. Competition is low, but this does not necessarily present and opportunity for high demand. 3. Potentially being forced to use 3rd Party install technicians a. For standard internet or phone installations, Comcast will sometimes utilize contractors to complete the work. This is usually when order volume is high, as we do not have enough technicians to complete all orders in a timely manner. We have received customer feedback that the contractors are not as knowledgeable as internal staff, and do not provide the same high quality work. If Comcast is forced to utilize 3rd party technicians, quality of the Smart ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 7. Partition Of Indi India Alex Ferry Period 1 Ap world history 5/30/15 Partition of India The Partition Of India part 1 Independence The british ruled over India for over two centuries, introducing systems, ideas, and practices into the indian culture. In 1935, The Government of India Act was the most recent time India had been governed, and the government had a fair amount of responsibility. The already existing social order influenced the nationalist movement, and the leaders being chosen. India developed a federal government, with three legislative lists of power. The constitution of India is federal but also includes a strong central government, with power over the union. The central government has power over the states even though they are supposed to be autonomous. Ballistic Missiles have had a long history dating back to 1939 and the beginning of the V Weapons program, and have been around in one way or another for over 70 years, indeed the advent of modern missile technology has changed the face of modern warfare and politics, and coupled with the advent of the two stage hydrogen bomb, they have now brought humanity the closest to another World War. Ballistic missile development, proliferation, and usage have had one of the largest and most profound impacts on modern warfare and international politics. On the cold and misty morning of October 3rd, 1942 Wernher Von Braun and his team at the remote baltic island of Peenemunde stood around a launch console from their safety bunker looking upon the apex of their years of engineering. For years the team at Peenemunde, under the direct orders of the Führer himself labored building the most technologically advanced weapon system ever devised, in an operation rivaling the scale of the Manhattan project. • 10. Anselm s Existence of God Refuted Essay Anselm s Existence of God Refuted Anselm s Existence of God Refuted If the only proofs for the existence of God were Aquinas s five ways and Anselm s ontological argument, in my opinion, Anselm provides the best reasoning. I am not saying that Anselm s argument is good, or even valid, but just that given the set of proofs by Aquinas and Anselm, Anselm s is better. Anselm argues, in effect, that the existence of God is built into the very concept of God. He proceeds by a form of argument called reductio ad absurdum reduction to absurdity. He attempts to show that the position of the fool the non believer who has said in his heart, There is no God is incoherent and leads to absurdity. (Cottingham, 1996: 246) How does ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... However, just because something exists in the understanding, we would not normally conclude that it also exists in reality. As Anselm himself points out, a painter may have the completed work of art in his mind, but that does not make it a real painting. (Cottingham, 1996: 246) What Anselm tries to show next is that in this case, having an idea in the understanding requires one to admit that the thing exists in reality as well. For suppose that God exists only in the understanding. Then we can conceive of a greater being: one who exists in reality as well. Moreover, that would mean that this God who exists only in the understanding is not the greatest conceivable being. (Cottingham, 1996: 246) Now we have a contradiction. Now come to the case of God. The GCB would have to be wise, because a wise being is greater than a being that is not wise. In addition, the GCB would have to be just, because justice is better than injustice. What Anselm is claiming is that the GCB must also exist, because a being that exists in reality is greater than one that exists merely in the understanding. So: It would be a contradiction to say; God (the GCB) is not wise It would be a contradiction to say, God is not just. In addition, it would be a contradiction to say, God does not exist. There are many arguments as to why Anselm s argument is invalid. I have chosen three of them, and have illustrated how these arguments make Anselm s ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 16. The Change Of Corporate Dividend Policy There have also been significant changes in corporate payout policy over this period. According to the Constant payout ratio, a firm will pay a fixed dividend rate e.g. 40% of earnings. The dividend per share would therefore fluctuate as the earnings per share changes. Dividends are directly dependent on the firm s earnings ability and if no profits are made any dividends are paid. This policy creates uncertainty to ordinary shareholders, especially who rely on dividend income and might demand a higher required rate of return (Gitman, 1998). Constant Amount Per Share or Fixed Dividend Per Share is where the dividend per share (DPS) is fixed in amount irrespective of the earnings levels. This creates certainty and is therefore preferred by shareholders who have a high reliance on dividend income. It protects the firm from periods of low earnings by fixing, DPS at a low level. This policy treats all shareholders by giving a fixed return. The DPS could be increased to a higher level if earnings appear relatively permanent and sustainable. Under the Constant Dividend Per Share Plus Extra/ Surplus policy, a constant DPS is paid every year. However extra dividends are paid in years of supernormal earnings. It gives the firm flexibility to increase dividends when earnings are high and participate in supernormal earnings. The extra dividends are given in such a way that it is not perceived as a commitment by the firm to continue the extra dividend in the future. It is applied by ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The Knight s tackled the monopolists and fought for the justices they knew to be theirs, in strong efforts to improve societal inequalities organizing groups of workers throughout different classes of sex, race, and skill. The major impacts that the Knights of Labor had on society during their peak, as well as in the future, can be illustrated by 3 principal criteria that this paper will be centralized around. Firstly, the Knights of Labor were dreamers they encouraged people to look forward and take action against poor circumstances and lack of power; because of this, they were ahead of other labour organizations during this time as the Knights fought against what others said to be unalterable. Second, the Knights of Labor brought disparate groups together, forging the way to a progressive society in the height of an otherwise racist and sexist one. Lastly, the Knights of Labor drew a significant expansion of wage earnings across North America providing many people with secure jobs and a culture in which they were protected by unity. According to this analysis, I recommend that Wal Mart is worth to invest in the long term because of the potential growth of market shares and revenue. Besides, based on P/E method and Gordon model, WMT price is undervalued; therefore, if investors buy the stock, they will get benefit not only in capital gain but also in dividend cash inflow. II. Introduction of Wal Mart Stores Inc. (WMT) Wal Mart, founded by Sam Walton in 1962, is the world s largest retailer and public corporation. It operates over 6,500 stores worldwide, employs 1.9 million associates, and serves more ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Beta is the slope of the characteristic line. As shown in appendix1, we use the monthly historical data from April 2003 to April 2008 to graph SCL. We use S P 500 as the market because it contains the stocks of 500 Large Cap corporations and can reflect the market change broadly. As shown in exhibit 1, we can get the SCL: Ri Rf = 0.001 + 0.1649(Rm Rf). So the beta is 0.1649 and the alpha (intercept) is 0.001. From the regression line, we find the R square is only 0.103. It reflects the degree that X variable explains Y variable is 10.3%. That is, Ri Rf has no close relationship with Rm Rf. In addition, due to the fact that beta is only 0.1649, it also provides the same result which Ri Rf and Rm Rf have no strong positive relationship. It is a good issue to consider why Wal Mart stock return does not relate with S P 500 return very well. From exhibit 2, we find the Wal Mart price did not change very much while S P 500 price went up. The major reasons may be that S P 500 includes many high tech stocks and those stocks performed very well during the period; therefore the volatility is greater than Wal Mart. Moreover, maybe Wal Mart has lower weight in S P 500 so its trend of price change is different from S P 500. From exhibit2, we also find Wal Mart had good relationship with S P 500 before 2004. To examine the situation, we use the data from 1998 to 2003 and find the SCL ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 31. Theme Of Social Class In Pride And Prejudice Most living creatures abide by a social structure of some sort. Between groups of animals there is the dominance of the Alpha, and the submission of the Omega. Among humans, there is a similar setup, but rather than size and strength, other factors often come into play. Wealth and status with others make for a bigger social ladder among human beings, and this can cause many weaknesses in the way people treat one another, and think. There are some who embrace these problems, and some who wish to change it. Sometimes, it is something as simple as a piece of writing that addresses these issues. In her novel Pride and Prejudice, Jane Austen uses her characters to break common social class structure, and reveal that it is actions that define a person, and not circumstance. In Pride and Prejudice, many of the characters reveal a depth that reaches beyond what is perceived by even other characters, already revealing the kinks in social class. The main male protagonist, Mr. Fitzwilliam Darcy is one of the most controversial characters, and from the very beginning has two sides to him that show a person underneath the circumstantial shell. In the article Themes and Construction: Pride and Prejudice it is noted that What separates Elizabeth and Darcy from the silly minor characters [...] is their ability and willingness to learn and grow, to overcome their initial shortcomings (Themes). One important prestation is the formation of relationships, as these events typically focus on groups rather than individuals. Mauss even stated For it is groups, and not individuals, which carry on exchange, make contracts, and are bound by obligations . (3) He showed the importance of relationships over material gifts and how they affected several people at once. Another common prestation that was considered important was the purity of the gift. Mauss stated, Another theme plays its part in the economy and morality of the gift: that of the gift made to men in the sight of gods or nature. (12) The people of the discussed cultures did believe each gift had its own personality. That is why it was a typical act for the donor to receive acceptance and approval from the gods before giving a gift. Love And Loss In The Wanderer s The Wanderer The major themes were mourning of the lost, enduring pain of one s heart, yearning for dear one s love, and putting time as a fault for these grievances. In The Wanderer, the man mourns for his former position of a warrior who had a great lord, friends, and joy. He sought for comfort and a companion One acquainted with pain understands how cruel a traveling companion sorrow is for someone with few friends at his side (line 29 31) but he soon forces himself to endure pain by stating that A wise man must be patient, not too hot of his heart nor hasty of speech...A man should hold back his boast until ... when he truly knows to direct his heart on the right path (line 65 72) and A good man holds his words back, tells his woes not too soon, baring his inner heart before knowing the best way, an eorl who acts with courage (line 112 113). • 36. Political Parties And Democratic Parties The political party is an organization of people who share similar ideas about the way the country should be governed. Political parties perform important tasks in government. In fact, political parties select candidates and check the other party. Political parties also inform the public. Most importantly, they organize the government (Political Parties, n.d.). The history of U.S political parties begins with the Federalists and their opponents the Anti Federalists who became the Democratic Republicans. Two major political parties in the United States today, however, are Democrats and Republicans. The U.S is one of the very few countries with only two dominant parties and there is so much attention focused on only two parties in the United State. Why Only Two Parties (n.d) explained that the two party system in the U.S is largely due to what is called plurality voting in single member districts, also means, winner takes all voting system. In addition, the two parties, Democrats and Republicans, have essentially crowded out the other minor parties. It makes extremely difficult for someone from one of those parties to become elected (Ch. 7). These two parties, the Democrats and Republicans, survived through the decades and they have contrasting beliefs that distinguish them from one another. The use of these methods can be very important and can normally produce efficient, realistic and logical results. So what is qualitative research and what is quantitative research?
