Pinto Case Have Affected The Ford Motor Company Business...
Running head: FORD PINTO 1
FORD PINTO 8
Introduction
Context
This paper explores how ethical issues of Pinto case have affected the Ford Motor Company business
environment. A number of factors suggest that Ford Motor Company was negligent and violated its
code of ethics. In this paper, we will review the corporate culture mindset which prioritizes profit over
the value of human life for the purpose financial gain.
Purpose
There are many different cases where people have been critically injured or have died from burn
related injuries from the ruptured the Pino gas tank. This case study specifically discusses the 1978
untimely deaths of Lynn Marie Ulrich, Dana Ulrich, and Judy Ann. Between 1971 and 1978, the Pinto
was responsible for a number of fire related deaths. It was the death of these teenagers that lead
brought the controversy of the Ford Pinto s faulty gas tank placement to a climax resulting in criminal
homicide charges for the automaker. Ford s CEO Henry Ford II and Ford s new president Lee Iacocca
were responsible for the launch of the Ford Pinto. To stay ahead of the growing competition, The Pinto
was not to weigh over 2,000 pounds and not costs not to exceed $2,000. Ford officials knew that the
Pinto represented a serious fire issue when struck from the rear, but were desperate to expedite the
vehicle s release, the Pintos timing was set just under 25 months. Tooling has already been kicked off,
so when crash tests revealed a serious defect in the gas tank, it was too late for any design
modifications. The tooling was well underway. Therefore, Ford s president decided it would be too
costly to make changes in the Pinto s gas tank location pushing ahead with the original design which
went unchanged for six years. Any changes to the low cost Ford Pinto would result in an increased
price, thus possibly making it less desirable by small car buyers. Iacocca understood that people
shopping for compact cars were watching every dollar, One Ford engineer explained, the process of
elasticity on these subcompacts is extremely tight. You can price yourself right out of the market by
adding $25 to the production cost of the model .

Disadvantages Of Resilience In Children
Resilience is the process of successfully adapting to various challenges or extremely threatening
circumstances (Ungar et al., 2013; Ungar, Russell, Connelly, 2014). Resilient children develop
protective responses during times of uncertainty, threat, and surprise. It is an active process involving
the interaction of vulnerability, risk, and protective aspects (Benard, 2004). Resilient children
experience positive results in their development despite the extreme challenges they encounter
(Martin, 2013).
Individuals become resilient in response to internal and external factors that they have, which are
called protective factors. These protective mechanisms are developed within children by having good
role models and access to adequate home, school, and community support (Im, Hughes, Kwok,
Puckett, Cerda, 2013; Ungar et al., 2013). These protective factors help to buffer adversity. The greater
the protective factors, the more likely it is that a person will persevere through life s difficulties
(Ungar, Russell, Connelly, 2014). The literature identified a number of protective factors found among
children who were anticipated to struggle, yet experienced positive outcomes (Benard, 1993). Ungar
et al. (2013) observed that a large percentage of children who grow up in adverse environments
display resilience by overcoming the challenges that confront them.
Various models help refine the various aspects of resilience theory (Ungar et al., 2013), such as the

Moral Nihilism In The Unicorn
Introduction
Iris Murdoch (1919 1999), the Irish British novelist, moralistandphilosopher, is an influential figure in
twentieth century European literature. Because

supporters of philosophy s turn to literature (FlooraRuokonen 77). According to Murdoch, writing
fiction is essentially an ethical activity. Her fictions andphilosophicalessays are influenced by Simone
Weil, from whom she borrows the concept of attention , and by Plato, under whose ethical theory she
claims to fight all that she considers to be the different forms of moral nihilism (Goodyer 217).

Seeking a position as governess in Gaze Castle , Marian Taylor arrives at an unnamed village. Much
of what she experiences upon arrival and her expectations regarding her likely adventures indicate the
standard plot of a Gothic novel with all its romantic implications in the manner of Charlotte Bronte s
Jane Eyre. Her decision to arrive at the place unannounced and her consequent disappointment upon
finding the situation unromantic, and herself a spectacle for the locals, satirizes any such
romanticizing tendency. Sharing Marian s anxieties and frustrations, the reader is thus plunged into the

Joseph Henry Essays
Joseph Henry
Joseph Henry lived from 1797 to 1878. Of Scottish decent, Henry was a son of a day laborer in
Albany, New York. He was sent to live with his grandmother as a small boy in a village about 40 miles
from Albany. At the age of thirteen, be became apprenticed to a watchmaker. He then became
interested in theatre and was offered employment as a professional actor, but instead he attended
Albany Academy where he was provided with free tuition. He has always been interested in science
and by 1823 his education was very far advanced that he was assisting the teaching of science courses.

If a current is flowing, self inductance tends to keep it from building up. Henry found that self
inductance is greatly affected by the configuration of the circuit, especially the coiling of the wire. He
also discovered how to make non inductive windings by folding the wire back on itself.
At the same time Henry was doing all this, another physicist, Michael Faraday was doing similar work
in England. Henry was slow in publishing his results and was unaware of Faraday s work, therefore
Faraday is recognized as the discoverer of mutual inductance, which is the basis of transformers, while
Henry is only accredited for the discovery of self inductance.
At the age of 35, Yale s geologist, Benjamin Silliman, was consulted regarding the possible
appointment of Henry to Princeton. Silliman s response was negative in saying that Henry has no
superior in our country, and Henry, who was modest, defended the fact that he never graduated any
colleges and he is principally self educated. Henry therefore got the job. His initial salary at Princeton
was $1,000 per annum plus a house. The Trustees also provided for $100 for the purchase of a new
electrical machine. At Princeton, Henry worked with his brother in law, Stephen Alexander, in the
observation of sunspots and continued his own

Theme Of Money In The Great Gatsby
There s no point in denying it, we all love money and want lots of it. We yearn to be like the richest
people in the world, who have so much money they can do whatever they want. Maybe some of us
even want to be the richest person in the world, at this moment the richest man in the world is Jeff
Bezos, founder of Amazon. He has a net worth of 90.6 billion dollars, something none of us will ever
experience, but can dream about. But dreams pertaining to money can only get us so far. Money is a
theme consistently expressed throughout two novels, The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald, and Of
Mice and Men by John Steinbeck. Fitzgerald s novel considers money largely through the eyes of a
very wealthy man who flourishes in life, whose name is Gatsby. On the other hand, Steinbeck s novel
describes the story of two men, who have little money and no accomplishments to boast about
whatsoever. The Great Gatsby and Of Mice and Men show that great success and quality of life is
determined by who you know, and how much money you have.
In The Great Gatsby, the main character Jay Gatsby is a very successful, well to do man because he
has many business acquaintances and experiences no shortages of money. Gatsby begins his journey
towards prosperity when he first meets Dan Cody. Dan Cody is a very a wealthy and knowledgeable
man who supplies Gatsby with both the expertise and necessary material tools to exceed in life
(Fitzgerald 100). Once Gatsby sets out to make his own fortune, he never

The Pros And Cons Of Military Censorship
Military censorship is a complex and multifaceted issue. With many important issues to consider it can
be hard to come down hard on one side of the issue. However, this is not the case for Mr. Thomas. His
opinion that censorship should not be tolerated in a democracy under any circumstances, least of all in
times of war (Thomas 341) falls hard on one side of the issue. Sadly in doing this he makes many
glaring errors and generalizations. While the public should be aware of the activities in the future,
revealing military activity prematurely can end with disastrous results.
In his first point Mr. Thomas claims that there is no need to be concerned with important information
accidentally being betrayed. He states All members of the media are willing to hold back information
that might jeopardize security (342). This is just simply not the case, however. For example, in 2003,
Geraldo Rivera bent down and began writing in the sand. This writing turned out to be information
that was not yet supposed to be disclosed. At one point, he actually revealed the time of an attack prior
to its occurrence, Lt. Mark Kitchens, a spokesman at Central Command(Carr 2003). Thomas even
contradicts himself in the very same paragraph by making us aware of two reporters that had their
privileges revoked during Vietnam (342).
Mr. Thomas also claims that military censorship is the reason reporters go searching for their own
information and consequently get lost or end up captured. He

The Key Aspects Of The Relationship Between Poverty And...
This policy report will identify and discuss the evidence towards the key aspects of the relationship
between abuse and neglect and the greater economic hardship which will have an impact on poverty
and how this affects the chance of a child being abused or neglected. Looking at the evidence it is
clear to see that there is a strong link associated between poverty and a child suffering from abuse and
neglect.
Introduction and context
According to NSPCC there are more than 50,000 children in the UK are abused and neglected
annually, this estimates that there are 8 children suffering abuse for every one child that is identified.
This is a strong link between socio economic circumstances of families and the chances of the child
experiencing abuse and neglect. This association extends across all developed countries, different
types of abuse and culture variation depending on the culture however definitions and research
methods deem equal to both poverty and child protection systems.
The families socio economic circumstances affect the relationship across the whole of society and not
just a simple divide of poverty. This then has a poor outcome in relation to the child s inequalities to
health and education and provides a link between the likelihood of abuse and neglect with the greater
economic hardship.
The World Health Organization (WHO) defines child abuse as all forms of physical and/or emotional
ill treatment, sexual abuse, neglect or negligent treatment or commercial

A Major Measure Of Biological Fitness
A major measure of biological fitness in a population is the fecundity, or reproductive success rate, of
female organisms (Berger et al, 2008). For insects in particular many factors influence the number of
eggs produced during the lifetime of a female. One key factor in insect reproduction is the ambient
environmental temperature. Insects are ectothermic and therefore rely on their environment to provide
the heat needed to carry out normal reproductive functions. Ambient heat dependence for insects has
been thought to have a greater effect on fertility success than other contributing factors such as
increased female body size. Studies by Berger and others have shown that the European speckled
wood butterfly, Pararge aegeria, can only reproduce in the temperature range of 8°C and 14 °C even
when controlling for larger female body sizes. The findings of the study suggest that temperature can
limit insect reproduction in two specific ways. First, the development of the egg may be inhibited by
temperature ranges that are outside the preferred range of the insect. Second, the female s range of
time she is able to lay eggs is reduced when the temperature of the immediate environment is not
conducive to the survival of her offspring (Berger et al, 2008). Thus, temperature is a paramount factor
when considering the success rate of many insect species.
Other studies have shown the importance of temperature on reproductive success of certain insects
and the implications that

Women In The Office
The Office is an award winning sitcom about a humorous outtake on modern day office life. (NBC)
Each documentary style episode portrays different situations in the workplace. In episode fifteen of
season two called Boys and Girls focuses on a common problem in the workplace, gender gaps.
Gender and different minority s issues have been a problem in the business industry for many years.
Women are treated differently for many reasons such as stereotypes and perceptions. (Modaff, Butler,
Dewine, 2012) In the boys and girls episode a women s seminar is being held in the office. First, I will
be talking about the behaviors presented in the seminar. The women were circled around a conference
room, all calmly listening to Jan, One of the women from corporate, held the seminar. Jan felt like the
office needed to have an all women s conference to talk about issues with women and the workplace.
The behaviors that were taken place in the seminar were not surprising. The women were joking

One of the positive for having a seminar is stated in the episode. Jan states that they use seminars to
help find women who might be a good attribute to the corporate life. When women are given the
opportunity to move up in a company is always going to be a positive. Another positive is confidence
building. The seminar in The Office episode was not the best example of a women s seminar but they
can be very helpful to women. Women are allowed to speak their minds freely and express their
feelings and challenges they face in the workplace. Women can also gain trust and better
communication in other women the workplace for a better workplace environment. The seminars can
really help women learn about themselves and about women in general in the workplace. A negative
outcome is women not gaining any insight from the special

The Different Forms Of Government, Friendship, Trust, And...
Within Aquinas political writings, he shows us the six different forms of government and the reason
why some are better than others. Government was created not just for organization but so people can
come together to form a community. A community works best when the governing only want well
being for the governed. Aquinas not only compares the different forms of government by showing
their benefits and drawbacks, but also argues about the supremacy of a monarchy, and how it s the best
form of government. The purpose of government is to look out for the well being of the community so
that it can keep all the basic values of human nature like religion, friendship, trust, and prosperity.
Aquinas states that government is to serve the people while taking into account peace and unity
because the good and wellbeing of a community united in fellowship lies in the preservation of its
unity (p 10). He explains that without fellowship there can be no unity and that we can find fellowship
through trust and well being. Peace gives community a sense of harmony through nonviolence and the
freedom from war. We find that government can be broken down into six different regimes, each
having a different way of ruling and a different objective. Each are different in ways yet some worse
than others. Aquinas describes each regime with a certain sense of reality and gives us an idea of what
the rulers are like within each government.
There are six forms of government; all compose of

Behavior Therapy
Introduction The behavioral theory of counselling is a type of therapy that bases its foundation on the
belief that it is possible to learn behavior. Counsellors and therapists apply classic conditioning as one
way in which this type of therapy could be implemented and it is derived from the research conducted
by Ivan Pavolov. The theorist evaluated classic condition through an experiment with dogs, whereby
he focused on the impact of a learned response. Based on his study, Pavolov was able to determine
that behavior can be conditioned though the use of a stimulus (Fava et al., 2014). With regards to
domestic violence, it is possible to incorporate behavior therapy to reduce the prevalence of the
domestic violence in the society and to condition ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Instrumental variable (IV) estimators represent a theoretically appealing way to deal with the
endogeneity problem. However, in practice it is often difficult to find instruments that both explain a
reasonable portion of the variation in work hours and are unrelated to an individual s academic

controlling for endogeneity are not entirely satisfactory, the researcher can be left without any manner
in which to determine the extent to which bias may be present in his/her estimates. Even when

Symbolism In The Exorcist
In this essay I will be talking about symbols and what they mean, some dichotomies, horror themes,
my thoughts on the topic and relating it to other films or books of the horror genre I find in The
exorcist. I will also be giving an overview of the film
The film was directed by William Friedkin and it is based on the novel The Exorcist from 1971. This
film The Exorcist is about a mother who is an actor and her daughter who unfortunately has been
possessed by the devil himself. It follows them and how the mother is trying to help her and that after
trying everything she gets to priests to do an exorcism on her and she is then rid of the monster.
Dichotomy is when a seemingly harmless thing is portrayed as the opposite. One dichotomy in the
film is Regan. Regan is a dichotomy because she is at first seemingly safe ... Show more content on

This is a symbol of purification of water to protect the good from the devil and his minions. We can
prove this because at times in the film the priests throw holy water on Regan to try to weaken the devil
and cause it harms. Then there is the medallion of the Saint Joseph he was known as two different
saints for one he was known as the patron saint of the workers and then later on he was declared by
pope Pius IX as the patron saint and protector of the holy church. I feel that being the patron saint and
protector of the holy church makes more sense, seeing as it is obtained by Father Merrin. This could
possibly mean that Then there is the holy cross. This is used in the scene where we can see a
possessed Regan pleasuring herself with a crucifix while uttering the words fuck Jesus, fuck you over
and over again. This can be a symbol of how much the devil despises god and all things holy by using
a holy object to commit and unholy sin while uttering fowl unholy words. He then furthers this when
pushing Chris s head down under her dress and saying lick me . This is probably to show how the
devil wants to

Reflective Essay On Hispanic Food
When first beginning this assignment, I thought of choosing Vietnamese food because I miss having
Vietnamese food for most of my meals, which was a luxury when I lived at home with my parents.
Also, I have not fully prepared a Vietnamese dish or meal myself, as cooking never appealed to me.
However, as I thought more about it, I would just be returning to the comforts of what I had already
known instead of challenging myself and expanding my experiences. Eventually, I decided to pursue
learning more about the Hispanic food culture because I greatly enjoy Hispanic food, whether it is
Americanized Hispanic foods such as burritos or enchiladas from restaurants like Taco Bell or La Paz,
or traditional, authentic foods I have had at my Hispanic friends houses. I love exploring the infinite
variety of ethnic dishes this world has to offer, but I do not pay much attention exactly to what I am
eating, what is in it, and how to prepare it myself. This assignment gave me the opportunity to go out
and adventure into Guerrero s Market on 11th and G street. I brought David with me, a friend from
Honduras who has exposed me to most of the authentic hispanic foods I have eaten. I decided to make
ceviche, and the two ethnic ingredients not used in mainstream American cuisine I selected were
avocados and tostadas. When I first arrived at Guerrero s Market, it reminded me of the haymarket in

Waiting For Superman Film Analysis
As part of a suburban, middle class community, I as well as hundreds of other students who are also
part of this community receive a proper education. Consequently, I have never had the experience of
living in the city and attending a school that is on the other side of the spectrum: one that takes
advantage of the word tenure and deprives students my age and younger of a decent education either
because of low funding, subsequent budget cuts, or a legislation that just does not care. However,
thanks to the 2010 Davis Guggenheim documentary, Waiting for Superman, it is no secret that the
United States has been battling such inequality for several decades. The film follows a superhero
allegory and several inner city kids, all of whom are part of a lower class community and seem to have
their fate sealed because of where they live and their financial situation. As the movie progresses,
Guggenheim presents two sides to this documentary: personal and impersonal. He specifically uses a
definitive structure and emotional appeal to expose the political and social issues that hinder all
children in all areas of the country from receiving a proper education and breaking away from their
poor living situation and a fate that is all too common for inner city kids. Before the kids are formally
and officially introduced, however, in the first few minutes of the movie, educator Geoffrey Canada
shares a symbolic anecdote from his childhood in which he reminisces one of the saddest days

What Kind Of Asian Are You Essay
Where are you from? Are you Chinese by chance? Are you really Vietnamese? In the poem What
Kind of Asian Are You? Alex Dang tells us why these questions could annoy someone. He also
addresses the stereotypes good or bad and prejudices Asians or any other race faces using allusions
and many other literary and sound devices like imagery in his poem. The many things he talks about
Asians could be applied to other races and that other races could connect with.
Alex uses allusion and rhyme to show that when someone asks people what is their race. People feel
that they are being marginalized and are only judged upon by their race s culture. For example every
time you confuse me with some other nationality that I might share similar feature to is stripping away
my individuality. (line66 68) Shows the readers that talking only about their nationality will make the
person feel that s the only thing they are. All that matters is the color of their skin and where they re

experience is one of a kind. Others, however, have been intrigued by the concept, but are too afraid to
give it a go. Clift explains that a first time sky diving experience does not have to be scary, especially
since it will be a tandem jump. In a tandem sky dive, the person jumping is literally attached via a
harness to professional. When two people tandem sky dive, the professional is the one in charge of the
technicalities of the jump. All the jumper needs to do is spread their arms and enjoy the ride. He says
that sky diving is not hard to do, and really anyone in good health can do it with ease. When you sky
dive, the most complicated part of the trip will be the paperwork that must be filled out prior to
jumping, and getting suited up and harnessed. Special suits are worn to help the professional or
individual diver adjust for wind, drag, and lift. These suits are comfortable, though not very stylish.

According to Table 1.1, water vessel type W1 popularity increased over time, while water vessel type
W2 decreased (refer to Chart #1). With this information, we may include the remaining archaeological
data of water vessels in sites D and GM into the table with correct chronological order that pre dates
2200 B.C. In essence, we now know the chronological flow of the sites from recent to oldest, which
are PGU , B , PGL , D and GM respectively. Sites (In chronological order from recent to oldest) | W1 |

As per a study conducted in 2009, obese people who consumed 15 ml to 30 ml of acetic acid (apple
cider vinegar) diluted with water for about 12 weeks, experienced a significant decrease in weight
gain, abdominal fat, waist circumference and triglycerides. Another reason apple cider vinegar helps
in maintain weight is its ability to reduce appetite, which again is because of the presence of acetic
acid in it.
Improves digestion Apple cider vinegar is useful for people suffering from digestive problem and
stomach issues like reflux, bloating and indigestion. This benefit of apple cider vinegar is because of
the presence of pectin in it. Pectin creates fibrous materials which breaks up diarrhea and also coats
the lining of colon which prevents intestinal spans. To achieve this benefit, it is advisable to take one
tablespoon of apple cider vinegar before each meal.
Boosts Energy Apple cider vinegar is rich in potassium and enzymes. Because of this, consumption of

It helps you grow and improve all throughout your career. Getting feedback, whether it s from your
employer/supervisor, a college or someone under your charge, also helps to identify parts of your
personal development that you may have missed or have overlooked. After all, we re only human and
humans make mistakes. Because of this, it s important to go about getting feedback from others the
right way. Walking up to a co worker and asking their opinion on your competency might have
unforeseen complications they might dislike you personally and give you false information about your
working capacity, they might lie to you to avoid hurting your feelings or it could erupt into an
argument and disrupt important work. In any case, it s necessary to provide a platform to the recipients
to conduct their feedback. An easy example is to have a general feedback day or meeting for the entire
work force or work group, where everyone comes together and gives each other constructive criticism
in a relaxed and friendly demeanor. Hosting a one on one, private feedback meetings is another good
idea that allows for a greater analysis of your competency. BY talking to each person individually, you
reduces any stress or anxiety the person may have and gives them the confidence to speak their mind
clearly. It s important to mention that you take in all the feedback presented to you, positive and
negative. It s never easy to take negative feedback, but both are required for you to truly improve, so it
is necessary to take any negative feedback with a positive attitude. You can always improve, so it s
imperative that you think along that line. This is also a good chance to give the individual some
feedback yourself, try putting any negative feedback you may have in between two points of positive
feedback, like

The Problem Of Desertification
ENVIRONMENTAL JUSTICE CONCERNS Desertification is an environmental and socio economic
problem. Environmental justice is characterized by the equal sharing of risks and benefits, distributed
equally without discrimination. The land affected falls in rural areas beyond the mainland which are
primarily occupied by non Han ethnic minorities. These areas include the autonomous regions of Inner
Mongolia, Xinjiang, and Tibet, which have historically been oppressed. The social component of the
problem creates a cycle in which poverty exacerbates desertification, and in turn, desertification
aggravates poverty. The cycle will continue until the wellbeing of people living in desertified areas is
considerably improved to the point where they no longer rely on degraded land for survival. Only then
will they be able to limit their impact on desertified land. Chen and Tang further explain For degraded
land, withdrawal of farmlands and enclosing pastures in order to exclude grazing are undoubtedly the
most effective ways to prevent further desertification. These measures would deprive local people of
their sole livelihood. Attempts to reduce desertification have neglected the human component of the
problem. As a solution, Wang et al. suggest that outward migration with a carefully considered
relocation policy is an important choice for desertified areas that are judged to be beyond ecological
carrying capacity. Miao et al. echo this idea, explaining that reclamation efforts

Amnesia is the partial or complete loss of memory, most commonly is temporary and for only a short
period of time. (1). There are various degrees of amnesia with the most commonly occurrence being
either retrograde or anterograde amnesia. Prior to my research into this subject I did not know much

This is an example of short term memory.
Long term memory is the information we retain after a day, two weeks, or ten years. (4).
In 1492 Columbus sailed the ocean blue.
This is an example of long term memory as almost every child is asked to commit this fact to memory.
So, what does all this have to do with amnesia? Well, I m glad you asked. Information flows in
through the middle of our brain and branches out like a tree. Before that information goes to different
areas, it goes through a channeling/filter system. In this regard, the brain is like a mailroom this
information goes into this box, and that letter goes into that box. (4). In order for short term memory
to become long term memory, it must go through a process know as consolidation. During
consolidation, short term memory is repeatedly activated so much that certain chemical and physical
changes occur in the brain, permanently embedding the memory for long term access. It is believed
that consolidation takes place in the hippocampi, located in the temporal lobe regions of the brain.
Medical research indicates that it is the frontal and temporal lobes that most often damaged during
head injury. (3).
As the amnesiac recovers, he or she usually recalls older memories first, and then more recent
memories. (3). However, memories tend to return like pieces of a jigsaw puzzle; these bits

horror stories we hear about them all the time. And we ve certainly experienced our fair share of

Property Developers Role in Urbanization
Property speculators are those who invest in different kinds of properties such as residential
properties, offices, shopping malls and so on. They buy the property at a low price but sell it at a high
price and the difference between two prices is their profit. This essay will focus on only one type of
speculators property developers and their role in urban change. Property developers who buy a piece
of land and build offices or housings and then sell to the public to gain profit.
Urban change is the impact of urbanization. Urbanization means the percentage increase in the urban

With a nice living environment, plenty of facilities and a high living standard in urban area, more
people are eager to move to urban area. This causes a further increase in urban population and
adverses the problem of inadequate living space.
To deal with the problem mentioned above, the property developers therefore create much residential
land use. In the 1960s, Tin Shui Wai and Admiralty were for fishery and military port respectively. But
in the early 2000s, the developers turned the originally land uses to residential, recreational and
commercial land use which enlarged the size of the urban areas. Besides, the economy in Hong Kong
is at its peak before 1997. The demand for commercial land use was high. The property developers
urged the government reclaim Victoria Harbour to obtain more land for building more commercial
buildings and offices which are profitable. One of the significant example is Chek Lap Kok airport
which is reclaimed from the sea to facilitate the economic growth. These show that the property
developers expand outwards to get more land and it leads to urban change.
There is another way of outward expansion and that is the expansion of built up area into rural areas.
That means originally the land is used for agriculture but the developers convert them into urban land
uses. Tai po is a good example to illustrate this point. In the 1950s, Tai Po was a piece of

My Mother, My Hero Essay
My Mother, My Hero In 1859 Henry Ward Beecher said, the mother s heart is the child s schoolroom.
I believe that statement because of experiences I ve had with my own mother. I have learned more
about life from her than from my 15 years of schooling. Over the last 20 years my mother has taught
me many valuable lessons just by being a living example of compassion, thoughtfulness, and
generosity. She is an angel that has protected and carried me throughout life. In the book, One Day My
Soul Just Opened Up, Iyanla Vanzant said, a truly compassionate person is one who can feel what you

Besides being compassionate my mother is thoughtful. She stays at work late if someone needs help
with theirs. She brings my grandmother dinner and runs errands for her. She is always putting others
before herself. For instance, last year I began singing in the choir at Iowa State. It was really important
to me because singing has always been a passion of mine. She drove to Ames for every single concert.
It meant a lot to me to have her in the audience supporting me. This year I also started singing in the
choir at my church. I was really excited and nervous about singing the first Sunday so few days before
I was going to sing she gave me a beautiful necklace with a star pendant on it. I remember her warm
hug and her telling me good luck and that I was her star . It touched me that she took time out of her
busy schedule to encourage and support things that she knew were important to me. She could have
just wished me well and enjoyed her few minutes of spare time, but instead she put me first. The third
aspect I admire in my mother is her generosity. She is always buying things for others. We aren t a rich
family by any means, but she is always giving. Just a few weeks ago my mother s friend was talking
about not being able to afford a new winter coat for her son. That night my mother went out and
bought him one. Then about a month ago my mother heard about a woman who is a recovering drug
addict.

  • 2. Pinto Case Have Affected The Ford Motor Company Business... Running head: FORD PINTO 1 FORD PINTO 8 Introduction Context This paper explores how ethical issues of Pinto case have affected the Ford Motor Company business environment. A number of factors suggest that Ford Motor Company was negligent and violated its code of ethics. In this paper, we will review the corporate culture mindset which prioritizes profit over the value of human life for the purpose financial gain. Purpose There are many different cases where people have been critically injured or have died from burn related injuries from the ruptured the Pino gas tank. This case study specifically discusses the 1978 untimely deaths of Lynn Marie Ulrich, Dana Ulrich, and Judy Ann. Between 1971 and 1978, the Pinto was responsible for a number of fire related deaths. It was the death of these teenagers that lead brought the controversy of the Ford Pinto s faulty gas tank placement to a climax resulting in criminal homicide charges for the automaker. Ford s CEO Henry Ford II and Ford s new president Lee Iacocca were responsible for the launch of the Ford Pinto. To stay ahead of the growing competition, The Pinto was not to weigh over 2,000 pounds and not costs not to exceed $2,000. Ford officials knew that the Pinto represented a serious fire issue when struck from the rear, but were desperate to expedite the vehicle s release, the Pintos timing was set just under 25 months. Tooling has already been kicked off, so when crash tests revealed a serious defect in the gas tank, it was too late for any design modifications. The tooling was well underway. Therefore, Ford s president decided it would be too costly to make changes in the Pinto s gas tank location pushing ahead with the original design which went unchanged for six years. Any changes to the low cost Ford Pinto would result in an increased price, thus possibly making it less desirable by small car buyers. Iacocca understood that people shopping for compact cars were watching every dollar, One Ford engineer explained, the process of elasticity on these subcompacts is extremely tight. You can price yourself right out of the market by adding $25 to the production cost of the model . Discussion Ford Corporate Culture One ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Disadvantages Of Resilience In Children Resilience is the process of successfully adapting to various challenges or extremely threatening circumstances (Ungar et al., 2013; Ungar, Russell, Connelly, 2014). Resilient children develop protective responses during times of uncertainty, threat, and surprise. It is an active process involving the interaction of vulnerability, risk, and protective aspects (Benard, 2004). Resilient children experience positive results in their development despite the extreme challenges they encounter (Martin, 2013). Individuals become resilient in response to internal and external factors that they have, which are called protective factors. These protective mechanisms are developed within children by having good role models and access to adequate home, school, and community support (Im, Hughes, Kwok, Puckett, Cerda, 2013; Ungar et al., 2013). These protective factors help to buffer adversity. The greater the protective factors, the more likely it is that a person will persevere through life s difficulties (Ungar, Russell, Connelly, 2014). The literature identified a number of protective factors found among children who were anticipated to struggle, yet experienced positive outcomes (Benard, 1993). Ungar et al. (2013) observed that a large percentage of children who grow up in adverse environments display resilience by overcoming the challenges that confront them. Various models help refine the various aspects of resilience theory (Ungar et al., 2013), such as the universal ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Because hernovelsconsistentlyintermingleartandethicalphilosophy, Murdoch is often considered as one of the supporters of philosophy s turn to literature (FlooraRuokonen 77). According to Murdoch, writing fiction is essentially an ethical activity. Her fictions andphilosophicalessays are influenced by Simone Weil, from whom she borrows the concept of attention , and by Plato, under whose ethical theory she claims to fight all that she considers to be the different forms of moral nihilism (Goodyer 217). • 5. Joseph Henry Essays Joseph Henry Joseph Henry lived from 1797 to 1878. Of Scottish decent, Henry was a son of a day laborer in Albany, New York. He was sent to live with his grandmother as a small boy in a village about 40 miles from Albany. At the age of thirteen, be became apprenticed to a watchmaker. He then became interested in theatre and was offered employment as a professional actor, but instead he attended Albany Academy where he was provided with free tuition. He has always been interested in science and by 1823 his education was very far advanced that he was assisting the teaching of science courses. If a current is flowing, self inductance tends to keep it from building up. Henry found that self inductance is greatly affected by the configuration of the circuit, especially the coiling of the wire. He also discovered how to make non inductive windings by folding the wire back on itself. At the same time Henry was doing all this, another physicist, Michael Faraday was doing similar work in England. Henry was slow in publishing his results and was unaware of Faraday s work, therefore Faraday is recognized as the discoverer of mutual inductance, which is the basis of transformers, while Henry is only accredited for the discovery of self inductance. At the age of 35, Yale s geologist, Benjamin Silliman, was consulted regarding the possible appointment of Henry to Princeton. Silliman s response was negative in saying that Henry has no superior in our country, and Henry, who was modest, defended the fact that he never graduated any colleges and he is principally self educated. Henry therefore got the job. His initial salary at Princeton was $1,000 per annum plus a house. The Trustees also provided for $100 for the purchase of a new electrical machine. • 6. Theme Of Money In The Great Gatsby There s no point in denying it, we all love money and want lots of it. We yearn to be like the richest people in the world, who have so much money they can do whatever they want. Maybe some of us even want to be the richest person in the world, at this moment the richest man in the world is Jeff Bezos, founder of Amazon. He has a net worth of 90.6 billion dollars, something none of us will ever experience, but can dream about. But dreams pertaining to money can only get us so far. Money is a theme consistently expressed throughout two novels, The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald, and Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck. Fitzgerald s novel considers money largely through the eyes of a very wealthy man who flourishes in life, whose name is Gatsby. On the other hand, Steinbeck s novel describes the story of two men, who have little money and no accomplishments to boast about whatsoever. The Great Gatsby and Of Mice and Men show that great success and quality of life is determined by who you know, and how much money you have. In The Great Gatsby, the main character Jay Gatsby is a very successful, well to do man because he has many business acquaintances and experiences no shortages of money. Gatsby begins his journey towards prosperity when he first meets Dan Cody. Dan Cody is a very a wealthy and knowledgeable man who supplies Gatsby with both the expertise and necessary material tools to exceed in life (Fitzgerald 100). • 7. The Pros And Cons Of Military Censorship Military censorship is a complex and multifaceted issue. With many important issues to consider it can be hard to come down hard on one side of the issue. However, this is not the case for Mr. Thomas. His opinion that censorship should not be tolerated in a democracy under any circumstances, least of all in times of war (Thomas 341) falls hard on one side of the issue. Sadly in doing this he makes many glaring errors and generalizations. While the public should be aware of the activities in the future, revealing military activity prematurely can end with disastrous results. In his first point Mr. Thomas claims that there is no need to be concerned with important information accidentally being betrayed. He states All members of the media are willing to hold back information that might jeopardize security (342). This is just simply not the case, however. For example, in 2003, Geraldo Rivera bent down and began writing in the sand. This writing turned out to be information that was not yet supposed to be disclosed. At one point, he actually revealed the time of an attack prior to its occurrence, Lt. Mark Kitchens, a spokesman at Central Command(Carr 2003). Thomas even contradicts himself in the very same paragraph by making us aware of two reporters that had their privileges revoked during Vietnam (342). Mr. Thomas also claims that military censorship is the reason reporters go searching for their own information and consequently get lost or end up captured. He ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 8. The Key Aspects Of The Relationship Between Poverty And... This policy report will identify and discuss the evidence towards the key aspects of the relationship between abuse and neglect and the greater economic hardship which will have an impact on poverty and how this affects the chance of a child being abused or neglected. Looking at the evidence it is clear to see that there is a strong link associated between poverty and a child suffering from abuse and neglect. Introduction and context According to NSPCC there are more than 50,000 children in the UK are abused and neglected annually, this estimates that there are 8 children suffering abuse for every one child that is identified. This is a strong link between socio economic circumstances of families and the chances of the child experiencing abuse and neglect. This association extends across all developed countries, different types of abuse and culture variation depending on the culture however definitions and research methods deem equal to both poverty and child protection systems. The families socio economic circumstances affect the relationship across the whole of society and not just a simple divide of poverty. This then has a poor outcome in relation to the child s inequalities to health and education and provides a link between the likelihood of abuse and neglect with the greater economic hardship. The World Health Organization (WHO) defines child abuse as all forms of physical and/or emotional ill treatment, sexual abuse, neglect or negligent treatment or commercial ... • 9. A Major Measure Of Biological Fitness A major measure of biological fitness in a population is the fecundity, or reproductive success rate, of female organisms (Berger et al, 2008). For insects in particular many factors influence the number of eggs produced during the lifetime of a female. One key factor in insect reproduction is the ambient environmental temperature. Insects are ectothermic and therefore rely on their environment to provide the heat needed to carry out normal reproductive functions. Ambient heat dependence for insects has been thought to have a greater effect on fertility success than other contributing factors such as increased female body size. Studies by Berger and others have shown that the European speckled wood butterfly, Pararge aegeria, can only reproduce in the temperature range of 8°C and 14 °C even when controlling for larger female body sizes. The findings of the study suggest that temperature can limit insect reproduction in two specific ways. First, the development of the egg may be inhibited by temperature ranges that are outside the preferred range of the insect. Second, the female s range of time she is able to lay eggs is reduced when the temperature of the immediate environment is not conducive to the survival of her offspring (Berger et al, 2008). Thus, temperature is a paramount factor when considering the success rate of many insect species. Other studies have shown the importance of temperature on reproductive success of certain insects and the implications that ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 11. The Different Forms Of Government, Friendship, Trust, And... Within Aquinas political writings, he shows us the six different forms of government and the reason why some are better than others. Government was created not just for organization but so people can come together to form a community. A community works best when the governing only want well being for the governed. Aquinas not only compares the different forms of government by showing their benefits and drawbacks, but also argues about the supremacy of a monarchy, and how it s the best form of government. The purpose of government is to look out for the well being of the community so that it can keep all the basic values of human nature like religion, friendship, trust, and prosperity. Aquinas states that government is to serve the people while taking into account peace and unity because the good and wellbeing of a community united in fellowship lies in the preservation of its unity (p 10). He explains that without fellowship there can be no unity and that we can find fellowship through trust and well being. Peace gives community a sense of harmony through nonviolence and the freedom from war. We find that government can be broken down into six different regimes, each having a different way of ruling and a different objective. Each are different in ways yet some worse than others. Aquinas describes each regime with a certain sense of reality and gives us an idea of what the rulers are like within each government. There are six forms of government; all compose of ... Counsellors and therapists apply classic conditioning as one way in which this type of therapy could be implemented and it is derived from the research conducted by Ivan Pavolov. The theorist evaluated classic condition through an experiment with dogs, whereby he focused on the impact of a learned response. Based on his study, Pavolov was able to determine that behavior can be conditioned though the use of a stimulus (Fava et al., 2014). • 17. Reflective Essay On Hispanic Food When first beginning this assignment, I thought of choosing Vietnamese food because I miss having Vietnamese food for most of my meals, which was a luxury when I lived at home with my parents. Also, I have not fully prepared a Vietnamese dish or meal myself, as cooking never appealed to me. However, as I thought more about it, I would just be returning to the comforts of what I had already known instead of challenging myself and expanding my experiences. Eventually, I decided to pursue learning more about the Hispanic food culture because I greatly enjoy Hispanic food, whether it is Americanized Hispanic foods such as burritos or enchiladas from restaurants like Taco Bell or La Paz, or traditional, authentic foods I have had at my Hispanic friends houses. I love exploring the infinite variety of ethnic dishes this world has to offer, but I do not pay much attention exactly to what I am eating, what is in it, and how to prepare it myself. This assignment gave me the opportunity to go out and adventure into Guerrero s Market on 11th and G street. I brought David with me, a friend from Honduras who has exposed me to most of the authentic hispanic foods I have eaten. I decided to make ceviche, and the two ethnic ingredients not used in mainstream American cuisine I selected were avocados and tostadas. When I first arrived at Guerrero s Market, it reminded me of the haymarket in the sense that it was made of brick, and it was old and small. In all its age, it ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 18. Waiting For Superman Film Analysis As part of a suburban, middle class community, I as well as hundreds of other students who are also part of this community receive a proper education. Consequently, I have never had the experience of living in the city and attending a school that is on the other side of the spectrum: one that takes advantage of the word tenure and deprives students my age and younger of a decent education either because of low funding, subsequent budget cuts, or a legislation that just does not care. However, thanks to the 2010 Davis Guggenheim documentary, Waiting for Superman, it is no secret that the United States has been battling such inequality for several decades. The film follows a superhero allegory and several inner city kids, all of whom are part of a lower class community and seem to have their fate sealed because of where they live and their financial situation. As the movie progresses, Guggenheim presents two sides to this documentary: personal and impersonal. He specifically uses a definitive structure and emotional appeal to expose the political and social issues that hinder all children in all areas of the country from receiving a proper education and breaking away from their poor living situation and a fate that is all too common for inner city kids. Before the kids are formally and officially introduced, however, in the first few minutes of the movie, educator Geoffrey Canada shares a symbolic anecdote from his childhood in which he reminisces one of the saddest days ... Alex Dang tells us why these questions could annoy someone. He also addresses the stereotypes good or bad and prejudices Asians or any other race faces using allusions and many other literary and sound devices like imagery in his poem. The many things he talks about Asians could be applied to other races and that other races could connect with. Alex uses allusion and rhyme to show that when someone asks people what is their race. People feel that they are being marginalized and are only judged upon by their race s culture. For example every time you confuse me with some other nationality that I might share similar feature to is stripping away my individuality. • 27. The Problem Of Desertification ENVIRONMENTAL JUSTICE CONCERNS Desertification is an environmental and socio economic problem. Environmental justice is characterized by the equal sharing of risks and benefits, distributed equally without discrimination. The land affected falls in rural areas beyond the mainland which are primarily occupied by non Han ethnic minorities. These areas include the autonomous regions of Inner Mongolia, Xinjiang, and Tibet, which have historically been oppressed. The social component of the problem creates a cycle in which poverty exacerbates desertification, and in turn, desertification aggravates poverty. The cycle will continue until the wellbeing of people living in desertified areas is considerably improved to the point where they no longer rely on degraded land for survival. Only then will they be able to limit their impact on desertified land. Chen and Tang further explain For degraded land, withdrawal of farmlands and enclosing pastures in order to exclude grazing are undoubtedly the most effective ways to prevent further desertification. These measures would deprive local people of their sole livelihood. Attempts to reduce desertification have neglected the human component of the problem. As a solution, Wang et al. suggest that outward migration with a carefully considered relocation policy is an important choice for desertified areas that are judged to be beyond ecological carrying capacity. In 1492 Columbus sailed the ocean blue. This is an example of long term memory as almost every child is asked to commit this fact to memory. So, what does all this have to do with amnesia? Well, I m glad you asked. Information flows in through the middle of our brain and branches out like a tree. Before that information goes to different areas, it goes through a channeling/filter system. In this regard, the brain is like a mailroom this information goes into this box, and that letter goes into that box. (4). In order for short term memory to become long term memory, it must go through a process know as consolidation. During consolidation, short term memory is repeatedly activated so much that certain chemical and physical changes occur in the brain, permanently embedding the memory for long term access. It is believed that consolidation takes place in the hippocampi, located in the temporal lobe regions of the brain. Medical research indicates that it is the frontal and temporal lobes that most often damaged during head injury. (3). With a nice living environment, plenty of facilities and a high living standard in urban area, more people are eager to move to urban area. This causes a further increase in urban population and adverses the problem of inadequate living space. To deal with the problem mentioned above, the property developers therefore create much residential land use. In the 1960s, Tin Shui Wai and Admiralty were for fishery and military port respectively. But in the early 2000s, the developers turned the originally land uses to residential, recreational and commercial land use which enlarged the size of the urban areas. Besides, the economy in Hong Kong is at its peak before 1997. The demand for commercial land use was high. The property developers urged the government reclaim Victoria Harbour to obtain more land for building more commercial buildings and offices which are profitable. One of the significant example is Chek Lap Kok airport which is reclaimed from the sea to facilitate the economic growth. These show that the property developers expand outwards to get more land and it leads to urban change. There is another way of outward expansion and that is the expansion of built up area into rural areas.
