Storage and warehouses are needed for several reasons: to preserve goods for future use; because transportation and storage are complementary; and to account for seasonal goods, sales, and production. Warehouses are needed to meet storage needs, ensure regular supply, allow for continuous and seasonal production/consumption, stabilize prices, store perishable products, equalize demand and supply, mitigate risk, and enable reasonable profits. Physical distribution involves planning, implementing, and controlling the physical flow of materials and finished goods from origin to consumption point, including customer service, inventory control, material handling, transportation, and warehousing.
