This document describes two methods for determining the alcoholic content of gelanicals: distillation and chromatography. The distillation method involves diluting samples containing less than 50% alcohol with water, extracting them with hexane to remove interfering substances, and then distilling and measuring the specific gravity or refractive index to determine the alcohol percentage. For samples over 50% alcohol, the concentration is adjusted to 25% before distillation. Precautions are taken to avoid loss of alcohol and ensure a clear distillate.
