This document outlines an experiment to use gas chromatography to determine the alcohol content of wine. Students will use a gas chromatograph to separate the components in a wine sample and measure the amount of ethanol present. The objectives are to operate the gas chromatograph, understand how it works by separating mixtures into individual compounds, and report the experimental data. Students will collect data on retention times of ethanol and other samples, calculate parameters like capacity factor to quantify results, and analyze errors and quality controls to evaluate their analysis. They will then write a report summarizing the experimental procedure, results, and conclusions.
