Audience
Theory
Georgia
• Primary Audience
Girls aged 0-14 because it’s based on a fairy-tale of Rapunzel
and it is a fantasy that they can enjoy.
Income: An average cinema ticket is around £8 and the parents
will need to have a stable income.
• Secondary Audience
Women aged 25-44 because they will have young children who
would want to see the film in cinemas.
Income: If an adult is bringing a child to see this film, it would
cost around £11 and overall, it would be £19 if they have one
child. This could be within the standard income of most families
This is generally a working class family who’s income is stable
enough for them to make a living.
NRS Grade: D
This is not biased towards any races or sexualities but it’s not
representing any different cultures.
Audience Profile
Audience Profile• Primary Audience
Females aged 25-44 because it contains adult content and is a
romantic drama with a tragic ending.
• Secondary Audience
Males aged 45-64 because it’s an old event that happened and
they may be interested in the history of the tragic event.
Income: Upper Income range for the upper class.
NRS Grade: A
There is no representation for races or sexualities because in the
olden days, there was no people of colour taking part in films.
There was mentions of Irish immigrants who travelled in the
lower class cabins which meant they died first or no way of
survival when the ship sank.
Audience Profile
• Primary Audience
Male aged 15-24 because it’s a fantasy film and teenagers will
love the nostalgia they get. Also, the lead is a male and is
starting school so they can relate to the story.
• Secondary Audience
Females aged 15-24 because there is a main female character
such as Hermione Granger which they can relate to.
Income: Lower Middle Income for the lower middle class.
NRS Grade: C1
There is some biased towards people who have never read the
books and not interested in magic. There is some Asian actors in
Harry Potter but the majority are white and British actors.
Hypodermic Needle
• Definition
When the media reports something, the audience immediately believes it to
be true and accept the so called truth.
• Example
A YouTube creator generates a mass audience that enjoys their brand that
they post online and gives them more attention which then boosts their
ratings and views up.
Uses and Gratifications Information
I may google how to use the magic wand tool in Photoshop to
help me learn how to use it in the future whenever I need it.
Whenever I am deciding on what to do next, I would always ask
for help from another student or my tutor.
If I want to learn about something that I am curious about, I
would search for a tutorial or instructions on how to do this skill.
To learn, I usually look up a YouTube tutorial on how to use the
object I’m learning about.
Uses and Gratifications Personal
Identity
Social media can change the way I act in everyday life such as behaviour towards other
students, tutor, family and I am conscious of how they look at me as a person and this
may change my behaviour if I don’t get positive feedback.
If I wanted to express my views on a topic that interests me, and other people have
the same views, it would reinforce my values to talk about it more and explore further
ideas.
I have role models on social media that I follow online and look up to everyday to
encourage me to be myself and try my best in college.
Uses and Gratifications Integration and
Social Interaction
People who I communicate with have similar interests to me as we play similar video
games and watch similar movies which makes it easier for me to start a conversation.
If these people have the same interests as me and like to talk about it, it can make me
feel a sense of belonging and not isolated.
While playing games, I can lose touch with the real world and not go outside or stop
me from eating and drinking. I can easily not communicate with my family as much
anymore. But there is nothing wrong with escaping from reality for short periods of
time as it is good for my mental health.
Uses and Gratifications Entertainment
I sometimes use social media for enjoyment as I can connect with my friends on
Facebook, Twitter, Instagram etc so that I can still keep in touch with them whenever
they go onto university or a job.
Watching YouTube videos from a creator that I enjoy watching really makes me feel
better whenever I have a bad day at college or in general. Also, listening to music
helps me escape from reality because it is a really good way to deal with stress and
can help you concentrate on your work.
Consumer Generated Content
• Example: YouTube – users can create videos and try to earn money from them and then YouTube has the
rights to do whatever they want with the video.
• What are the advantages to media producers?
The advantages to media producers are that once it’s uploaded to Instagram, they have the rights to use your
photo for adverts and can delete them if they don’t meet the guidelines. If it’s YouTube, they can use your
video you uploaded to advertise a product and delete it if it contains copyright infringements.
• Why would the audience generate content?
The audience would generate content by uploading pictures and videos to social media websites and they
could possibly gain some attention with the brand that they are posting which some people may enjoy
watching.

Editor's Notes

  1. Include a poster of a film of your choice and discuss the Primary and Secondary audiences referencing Gender and Age. Discuss audience appeal for each audience.
