3. Research
My research was easy to find images of certain magazines because they all
had similar features in colour schemes and characters. The one that was
helpful the most to me was this winter issue of a magazine that I found where
it’s all covered in snow and it shows the characters in winter outfits which is
where I got my inspiration from. My magazine cover includes sparkles (which
I interpreted as snow) and the colour scheme is what I associate with winter
to make it more fitting to the theme of the game I am advertising. This shows
that the magazine is focusing more on that game itself.
The strengths of my research was that when I was searching for the images to
look for examples, it was pretty easy to find gaming magazines as they come
in all shapes and sizes. The weaknesses of my research was that I wanted to
find a specific winter magazine but unfortunately it was pretty hard to find
one and had to settle for a Christmas issue.
4. Planning
I have planned to make a winter-themed magazine to promote my own original
game, The Ice Princess. I drew up mind maps of what I wanted it to look like and
decide the genre of the game, the colour scheme, the fonts etc. My planning was
not too simple but not too over the top either, I used characters for reference to
decide on what I wanted my original characters to look like and the colour scheme
of their outfits. I did a layout plan of my cover, contents page and article of the
game itself to base it on what I wanted the magazine to look like. I used
Photoshop to make all 3 of my magazine assets so it would look professional and
magazine-esque.
The strengths with my planning was I had a lot of ideas to base my magazine on
and come up with some great winter styles and fonts to make it fit the theme of
the game I am promoting and attract the target audience’s eye. The weaknesses
with my planning were that there wasn’t a lot of winter magazines to help me
plan out what I wanted it to look like because on my research, I struggled to find
some winter based magazines.
5. Time Management
I don’t think I managed my time as well as I thought because I haven’t
finished my article because I have run out of time and it would be too much
to do so I have only made my cover and contents pages. I wish I had handled
my time much better and I could have improved my products with more time.
I did complete my project on time but I didn’t finish my 3 production pieces in
time. If I had more time, I would make my article about the game I’m
promoting to give even more of a grade and made some changes to my
contents page because I feel like there isn’t a lot on there and I could of
added some more to it.
I think my products would have been improved with additional time because I
could go over the final details and change things around or add something to
the cover or contents page. Overall, I’m decent with the final product but I
could have added more content to them.
6. Technical Qualities
Similarities
• The themes are exactly the same, they are both winter themed.
• They have a barcode at the bottom right, so people can scan and buy the product.
• Same colour background, which is blue.
• Both have a contest going on.
8. Aesthetic Qualities
I think my work looks good because it looks very creative and it is very fitting for what
the theme was originally going to be. I really liked how I made the images into a circle to
surround the main character so they are the center of attention and attract more to the
public eye. The contents page I feel could have been a lot better because it looks very
empty and not a lot of information has been put on it. To improve, I should have added
a little bit more information on both because it doesn’t inform the audience enough.
9. Audience Appeal
This has appealed to my target audience because the colours are what they voted for in
the poll. Also, the characters are recognizable to others which makes them familiar with
the product which can help them be more interested in the magazine. I feel the font is
easy to read so it can catch their eye to persuade them to buy it and fits the theme very
well.
11. Feedback 1
• What did you like about the product?
I liked the colours used to make this and it really suits the
theme you were going for. I also like the pictures included to
make it more appealing to your target audience.
• What improvements could have been made to the
product?
I think if you added more male characters to appeal more to a
wider audience because all it includes is female characters.
Also, more information should be included in the contents
page to find out where everything is.
12. Feedback 2
• What did you like about the product?
I liked the character design and all the colours you have
included. I particularly like how you interpreted the sparkles
as snow so it shows how creative the magazine is and the
ideas are.
• What improvements could have been made to the
product?
– I think the name should have been a bit more relevant to
gaming because it is a gaming magazine and it should be more
relevant to that topic.
13. Feedback 3
• What did you like about the product?
I liked the colours and the activities shown on the front, the contents
page is very simple and easy to understand which I like as well.
• What improvements could have been made to the product?
I think that more information should have been added to the contents
page because it looks so empty, dry and not informative enough. Also,
some colours don’t stand out enough as the others do because it
doesn’t really appeal to me as much.
14. Peer Feedback Summary
• What do you agree with from your peer
feedback?
I agree that they like the colours and it fits with the
theme because it’s a winter theme that suits the
game theme that we are promoting.
• What do you disagree with from your peer
feedback?
I disagree with the more pictures because I feel like
there are a lot of pictures already on the magazine.
I also feel like they help promote the magazine well.
15. Peer Feedback Summary
If I could change anything about my product, I would change the contents page because
I do feel that more could have been added to the contents because it does feel empty
and dry so it would make it feel more like a magazine if I had added more information. I
could have changed the title and the font to make it more like a gaming magazine as it
feels very like a normal magazine by downloading more fonts from dafont.com. Also, I
could have changed the name to make it more themes on gaming as I kept making it
themed as winter too much and not gaming as much.
