Analysis Of Honour Killing By Imtiaz Dharker
Commentary: Honour Killing by Imtiaz Dharker
This commentary will be centred on the 2001 piece Honour Killing written by Imtiaz Dharker. In this
commentary I aim to give an in depth analysis and thoughtful critique of lexical and descriptive
devices used within her free verse poem; in doing so I will address the deeper contextual elements
highlighted within her work.
The poem Honour Killing details a woman s struggle for freedom and reclamation of her own identity.
The main focal point of this poem is finding one s self and staying true who you are despite what your
culture or societies tells you to do. Throughout the poem the poet highlights both religious and culture
related issues associated with women in South Asia.
Before analysing the poem, it is important to understand some of the contextual elements within the
piece, such as honour killings and religion. The term honour killing refers to the murder of a relative,
usually a girl or women who is believed to have brought shame upon the family . This definition is
particularly important to this poem as it is the title. This word holds great significance to women in
south Asia as women in Pakistan live in a society which has only recently started condemning this
type of practise. In addition to honour killings being an important factor within the poem the idea of
religion, more specially Islam is referenced. I m taking off this veil is referencing the hijab that is a
religious head dress often worn by Muslim women, for the purpose of concealing their beauty and
retaining modesty.
The main themes within the poem Honour killing are culture, religion and self expression/ freedom.
The writer showcases these themes through the use of metaphors and imagery which are related to the
religions Islam and Hinduism. The use of lexis such as veil and Mangal sutra highlight not only the
theme of religion but also culture as the Mangal sutra is a symbol of marriage and is worn by the bride
until her husband s death. The wearing of a Mangal sutra is a sacred custom within the Hindu faith
which can also be a big cultural tradition. The incorporation of these particular cultural references
allows the reader some insight into the life style and ethnic

The History Of Canada
The history of Canada spans over hundreds of years. There have been endless defining occasion s in
our country s history that have constructed, and shaped our country. Canada has shaped as a nation
politically, economically and socially through many consequences we have faced and many moments
we have celebrated. Events such as the women s suffrage, Terry Fox s Marathon of Hope, and Stephen
Harper apologizing to aboriginal people regarding what happened with the Residential School System
have had a lasting impact on our country. Their significance to Canadian history is evident through the
impact they have had on many of our citizens. They have played a leading role in carving our history
to be the way it is today.

Subsequent to the year 1919, many doors were opened for Canadian women and they were able to
achieve a greater role in society. A role, in which they still hold today.
Terrance Fox was motivated to make the world a better place. Diagnosed with osteosarcoma in 1977,
he was determined to make the world aware of this type of cancer and raise money for cancer
research. When Terry was diagnosed, doctors declared that he had less than a 50% chance of survival.
He then was required to have one of his legs amputated. Just three weeks after his surgery, he was
active and joined a wheelchair basketball league. During that time, he read an article about a man
participating in the New York Marathon who was amputated just as he was. Terry decided if he could
run across Canada on one strong leg, he would be able to make people aware of this cancer and raise
money for it. His race began on August 12th 1979. As he endured tough weather conditions
throughout the month of August, word began to spread worldwide. A few weeks after he left his
hometown to begin this magnificent expedition, he reached Toronto. It is estimated on that one day he
raised over 100 million dollars. Terry had every intention to finish his marathon, but physically he
could not. The cancer spread and he was forced to stop just outside of Thunder Bay. Terry passed
away on June 28th, 1981. To this day, he is one of the most influential individuals in the history of

Yankee Stadium Economics
The rise in popularity of professional sports over the last century has brought financial gain and
stability to many facets of the economy. Whether it is a new franchise, stadium, or the signing of a big
name player, these activities bring attention to a region or group and influence often comes as a result
of that attention. Money brought into an area from ticket revenue, hotel bookings, merchandise sales,
and other businesses are impacted financially when a stadium is built. The economic influence a
stadium brings to a local economy is a positive one. Many factors come into play when anticipating
the construction of a new stadium. Will the franchise be successful in the market? How will the
stadium impact traffic flow? How long will the project take? What is the total projected cost of the
project? All of these facts are greatly considered, and the pros and cons are assessed. After the initial

Over the last 15 years, sixty four new major league facilities were built... One high profile
construction deal is Yankee Stadium, which was originally built in 1923 for $2 million (Sanderson).
Two million dollars in 1923 adjusted for inflation is $29,228,452.38. In 2005, the New York Yankees
announced plans to build a new stadium. The construction cost is expected to be around $1.3 billion,
which the Yankees will pay for. New York City is projected to spend $220 million on infrastructure
and various other improvements across the area (Robertson). On top of the spending for the physical
stadium, the city of New York spent about $220 million on infrastructure and other improvements
(Robertson). This extra spending is the type of costs that investors like to argue is the reason for the
subsidies. Since the money is being spent on increasing the quality of the public space around the
stadium and for the taxpayers, should they not help

Flat Irons-Personal Narrative
One summer ago, I discovered the truth behind the old saying, Forever doesn t last too long these
days. I felt as if forever had been cut short like the strands of life were by the Furies.
I remember it like it was yesterday I had just bought a new flat iron. We were walking through the
outlet mall in Orlando, Florida. Lost and confused by all the hustle and bustle of it, I tried to remain
optimistic. I always try to steer clear of the booths in the middle of a mall as the salespeople are
incorrigibly relentless. Suddenly, I was seized by an Italian speaking woman. Immediately, she hauled
me to her booth, and I could not escape. For fear of us leaving, she forcefully seated me.
Consequently, my family was forced to follow and participate. ... Show more content on

Almost finished, I looked up to note my accomplishments. I was impressed. My thick, coarse hair was
silky and had body. I couldn t wait to show it off. Every time I needed my hair to look salon done, I
used the Royale. It was my favorite until it became unreliable. I had yearbook pictures the next day
and was depending on Royale with my life. I absolutely could not go to school with my hair half afro,
half straight. A ponytail simply would not do. I started crying because the flat iron would not turn on. I
tried everything I could imagine. I cursed the Italian saleswoman, and the creators of the Royale for
filling my innocent mind with lies about a better future. I was about to give up on life when I
remembered I still had an old flat iron. It may not have been new and improved, but it got the job
done.
When I returned home from picture day, I immediately phoned the Royale company about the lifetime
policy. I did not know where my mother brought it from nor where her warranty paper was. The
Representatives were not helpful and could not assure me a new flat iron. I was heartbroken. After all
the promises and guarantees of no hassle replacement, the company did not follow

Developing Countries Energy Wood Charcoal
The several targets are general objectives that cannot be adequately measured, as they do not specify
actual values, which would permit them to be compared with future data. They are ambiguous and
their success or failure will have to be judged subjectively by the 2030 assembly. Despite this
problem, they can still be contextualized using various characteristics. Target 7.1 states that universal
access to affordable, reliable, and modern energy services will be established by 2030. If universal is
considered to be the totality of individuals, a strong estimate of this state will be possible. Current
statistics of the world s population possessing electricity, for example, exist, which indicates this
capability of measuring human s specific power consumption. ADDIN EN.CITE

The Role Of Women In EuripidesBacchae
Throughout Euripides Bacchae, there are plot elements, which seem out of place for a tragedy, such as
Pentheus frolicking around in women s clothing. However, these out of place comedic elements serve
as a way to highlight the underlying conflicts in the play. One of these seemingly out of place plot
elements is the comedic way Agave handles the death of her child. On the surface, her comedic
behave or depicts women as foolish and weak, therefore making women seem inferior to men.
However understanding Agave s comedic behavior reveals the underlying conflict between how
women should behave in society versus how they behave in the story. Therefore, understanding the
way Agave handles the death of her son emphasizes the role of women in the patriarchal Greek
society. Understand the underlying meaning of Agave s comical behavior illustrates the oppression the
women face in the patriarchal Greek society. On the surface, the comedic way Agave handles her son s
death presents women as foolish and weak. Agave is oblivious that with hands alone . . . [she] caught
[Pentheus] and tore [him] limb from limb even though she holds his head in her hands (Bacchae
1209/10). Consistently, Agave believes that the bloody item she holds in her hand is the head of a lion,
rather than the head of her own beloved child. Agave s obliviousness is a form of dramatic irony,
which Euripides uses on the surface to represent Agave, as well as the other women, as rationally
inferior to men. This

A Code Of Ethics Limits The Development Of Psychological...
Discussion of the claim that adherence to a code of ethics limits the development of psychological
theory
The introduction of the Nuremberg Code in 1947 was a direct consequence of the Nuremberg Trials in
which various Nazi doctors were found guilty of carrying out brutal and heinous research experiments
on humans during the second World War. Subsequently, the key principles contained in the Code
became the basis of ethical behaviour in any medical or psychological research which includes the
involvement of human participants (cited in Banyard, 2012). It is now universally understood that the
health, safety, wellbeing and human rights of every research study participant is protected. Conversely,
it is the opinion of some that the introduction of the Nuremberg Code has resulted in limitations to the
results obtained from these research studies, and, as a result, to the development of psychological
theory. It is the purpose of this essay, therefore, to address the claim that adhering to a code of ethics
limits the development of psychological theory. In the paragraphs to follow, various evidence and
alternative viewpoints will be provided both for and against this claim, as well as an evaluation of the
impact in adhering to these ethical principles for researchers.
One such research study to be criticised on the basis of ethical behaviour was designed to study
obedience and authority using human participants (Milgram, 1961). In the presence of an authoritarian

A Brief Note On Germ Free Water And The Ganges River
The Ganges River is 1,560 miles long, this river runs through about 48 towns. the ganges river flows
through China, India, Nepal and Bangladesh. The Ganges river basin is one of the most fertile and
densely populated in the world and covers an area of 400 000 sq miles (1 000 000 sq km). Hindus
respect the Ganges river with the holiest of regards. This holy river was named after the goddess
Ganga, who is believed to be the daughter of the mountain god Himalaya. now, think about all the
people in those towns and just how many of them have to drink this holy water. the ganges is home to
the hindu who believe it is a spiritual cleansing waters, they call it the holy river.
We are proposing cleaner water. there is a way to have this cleaner water if you want it, we can help.
we will make things better. We propose water tanks filled with germ free water. to start, there will be
one in every town along the river.
As Jyoti Thottam said in her article How India s Success is Killing its Holy River all the way from the
himalayas to the plains, the rampant growth of the Ganges River is turning it into a toxic sewer. She
also lets us know that it isn t too late to fix if we start now with a solution (2010). The source of the
pollution is all of the many people who live along the Ganges river. This solution is needed in the
Ganges river because the Ganges river is almost irreversibly polluted. The people of india are affected
the most by this pollution. India is drinking and

When half of my town travel to there favorite pool club with their goggles, towels, and sun burns, I

peers. However I will not be there. Many people say the beach is dirty. People say the sand and the
salt add up to a dreadful combo, and that the clean nice stone of a pool is better. In my opinion pools
are the dirty ones. Watching the life guards dump buckets of chlorine into already chemicalized water,

Pools have an average depth of around 5.5 feet. The typical swimming pool dimensions are 10 x 20!
You could barely fit anything in there. In the pool if you re in you re in. The ocean is as deep and as
far as you want to go. The earth is about 90% water! The ocean never closes. It is open 24/7, you may
not want to go the beach at 12:00 pm but it s there. The pool is closed at 5:00 pm. Imagine you are in
the pool having the time of your life. Then all of the sudden over the cracky loud speakers you hear a
tired teenage lifeguard yell pool closing, time to go. Then you find yourself wrapped in a wet towel,
freezing in the car. All of this could be solved by simply going to the unclosable ocean. I go to the
beach in Maine every summer. The kid at the table named Nick believes that because of this, I am
biased to beaches. I think my beach attendance makes me an expert on this debacle. Who would you

who you would trust, someone who is wrong or someone who is well,

As We Saw Previously, We Can Divide The Touristic Industry
As we saw previously, we can divide the touristic industry into two major categories, the modern day
massive tourism and ecotourism. Both forms have a distinctive history, definition, economic benefits
and environmental impact. Although both are growing at lightning speed, especially as our societies
become wealthier and eager to explore the world around them, the biggest dilemma lies on which,
ecotourism or tourism, is a better alternative to pursue to balance economic development and
environmental protection. To find the answer, we need to analyze and compare the main premises
about the two topics.
In regards to history, the idea of being a tourist has been around for centuries. As we saw previously,
humans have dreamed of traveling and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In David Fennell s argument, we can t properly define tourism because we might leave a key element
economic activity out, especially if we understand that just in the category of attractions we have
museums, festivals, sports, cinemas, theme parks and others. The array of options in the industry of
tourism has made it one of the fastest growing economic sectors in the world. However, its massive
scope might not make tourism the best environmental alternative.
In the case of ecotourism s definition and scope, it is easier to understand its objective. In Martha
Honey s book, she introduced us to the seven characteristics of real ecotourism, which clearly limit the
definition to activities to natural destinations with an environmental educational purpose and with the
objective of benefiting financially local people and conservation areas. Based on that definition,
ecotourism is a better environmental alternative than regular tourism. However, its limited scope and
smaller scale programs place ecotourism at a disadvantage regarding financial development.
In terms of economic benefits, the tourism industry has been growing at an unprecedented speed. It
ranks number third in exports category with 7% of the yearly totals. As an industry, it represented 1.5
trillion dollars in 2015, with $1260 billion earned by the receipts in the same year. Tourism provided

Examples Of Atonement In The Rime Of The Ancient Mariner
In the poem The Rime of the Ancient Mariner, Coleridge uses the method of storytelling to
acknowledge and implement the reader into the situations that the Mariner faces. Coleridge does this
by implementing vivid imagery into his poem to create a tale that we the readers can easily follow
such as the tales we tell one another today to learn or understand different concepts in modern day life.
The concept of sin and atonement are the allegories that we learn about in The Rime of the Ancient
Mariner; we learn that with sin comes the reprimand of a supernatural figure; however the prejudice
one faces helps lead to the forgiveness the Mariner learns to find within himself. The poem contains

Rhetorical Devices In Julius Caesar
The importance of speech is a necessity when it comes to becoming a great leader his/her words can
make or break their position in the eyes of their people. This is where rhetoric can be significant in this
leader s life their knowledge of rhetoric can drastically improve or dismantle their career. Shakespeare
s ability to slowly mold leaders out of insignificant characters proves to be a very entertaining .
Introducing a character that shows little or no traits of a natural born leaders and putting them in
situations that forces them to reveal how much of an actual leader they actually are. This is what
intrigues about some of shakespeare s plays his ability to develop a character and place him in this
leadership position that ends up being a perfect fit for them. One character that was probably seen as a
unlikely leader and was slowly pushed into a position where his leadership would be of the highest
significance to revenge the murder of his friend was in Shakespeare s play Julius Caesar Antony is
introduced to us as one of caesar s most trusted and later revealed truest friend this loyalty can be seen
as one of the most important leadership traits that antony has. Him being able to stay loyal to his
friend even in the worst of circumstances. However even though his friendship is a vital role and a
fundamental reason that he is put in the spotlight it does not cement him as a key influential leader.

Cultural Relativism And Diversity
According to society s knowledge, many can come to an agreement that cultural relativism and
diversity can play a huge effect on whether different cultures and traditions share the same respect for
morals and values towards each other. However, these two things can be considered as two
widespread theories that are used to explain the differences amongst different varieties of cultures,
their ethics, and their morals. Between the two theories, both characterize the moral, ethical, and
societal differences that diverse cultures experience. From recalling the discussion of whether
everything is relative cultural, relativism is defined as to the aspect of all beliefs, customs, and ethics
being relative as to the individual within his/her own social ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

We should come together and reach an understanding of each other, and move beyond a simple
tolerance of life. We should try to embrace and honor the rich dimensions of diversification that is
embodied within each individual in a way that is customary to fit one s personality. This is better
known as their own characterization or virtue. In Benedict s The Case for Moral Relativism he states,
It is hard for us, born and brought up in a culture that makes no use of the experience, to realize how
important a role it may play and how many individuals are capable of it, once it has been given an
honorable place in any society... (page 133). From this, he claims that from childhood to adulthood we
are raised within certain standards of morals and considered to be categorized within groups. These
standards are unique to each group of people. As we grow out of childhood, we become aware of the
set of morals and values that have a tendency to change over age and time. I personally do believe that
morals will continue to change overtime, and due to this, different culture variations will hold
different cultural values and morals. It is hard to imagine a world in which we all believe the same

Musical Theatre
An accomplished American lyricist and composer, Stephen Sondheim, once said: All the best
performers bring to their role something more, something different than what the author put on paper.
That s what makes theatre live. That s why it persists . Through my experiences in musical theatre,
both in elementary school and high school, I have come to realize that the script is the backbone, or
the base with which the actor begins to create. All of the words written down on paper are one
dimensional; they are flat. It is only when an actor gives those words a voice that the character begins
to come alive. An actor adds all of the other essential layers to the backbone, and suddenly, there are
movements, expressions and emotions to fit with the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
That is the beauty about theatre. Each performer has a different interpretation of a character, because
they draw upon their own personal experiences in the attempt to connect with their character on a
deeper level. This is why musicals live on, and are repeatedly performed on Broadway. Although the
characters and the plot are ever present, the actors will change from year to year, or sometimes even
from show to show. Therefore, not one show will be the exact same. Every performer brings
something different to their role, connecting with their character in a way that no one else ever will;
that is unique only to them. This rings true for my performance in the musical Fame. Having a double
cast, each character was shared between two people, thus allowing for differentiation in the way in
which the characters were interpreted and played. For example, I played Iris s character in a way that
was unique to how Katie Smith played the character. Even though we spoke the exact same lines, we
interpreted these lines differently, making them our own and molding a character from our own
thoughts, ideas, and personal experiences. Making these text to self connections (relating one s own
experiences to a text, or in this case, a script) is essential when acting. To truly relate to the character
in which one is acting, one must draw upon their own ideas and connect them to their character s
feelings, emotions, behavior, etc. Forming these connections allows for one to step inside the character
s shoes, and to truly become that specific character. In my personal experience of acting as Iris in the
musical Fame, I felt as though Iris and I shared great similarities, and this is what helped me to relate
with her character on an emotional level. Although I am not a talented ballet dancer who never does
anything but dance, I could relate to Iris s hardworking and perfectionist

Rhetorical Analysis Of Charlotte Perkins Gilman
In literature, there are many different components that create a timeless and classic text, such as
personification, imagery, or symbolism. In some texts an author uses overbearing amounts of imagery
to give us a vivid description of what is happening in the story, in others an author may give very little
visual details, but instead incorporate countless allusions to help the reader better understand their
story by alluding other popular works. Through the use of themes and symbols, however, an author
can show how he or she, or the society at the time of their writing, views a certain social movement or
item. Effectively using multiple literary techniques makes a work of literature, not only satisfying to
read, but it also gives it a sense of importance in understanding exactly why that piece was written,
because every work of literature has its own reason for being made. Charlotte Perkins Gilman is one
such author that has used themes and symbols to effectively give a certain story she wrote a large
amount of importance in furthering her ideology with society and reformation at the time. The Yellow
Wallpaper uses the symbolism of the story s title, confinement to the room, and the narrator s husband
to reveal different themes about society at the time the book was written along with why Gilman wrote
the story as she did. Gilman wrote The Yellow Wallpaper in 1890, and it was officially published by
The New England Magazine in January 1892. During this time

Analysis Of Gulliver s Travels

Final Paper

Throughout all of Jonathan Swift s writings there are many commonalities. One in particular that
stands out is the use of satire throughout both Gulliver s Travels , which tells the story of a series of
voyages of Lemuel Gulliver s published in 1726, and A Modest Proposal , where Swift uses the idea
of cannibalism to captivate his audience as well as focus on society s problems. Throughout Swift s
life, politics and religion had a huge impact on him and more importantly, his writing. Many of the
satires that Swift uses in his works have to do with politics and the changing ways of the Catholic
church in the 1800 s.
A Modest Proposal written in 1729, was a satire written to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Swift is using this quotation to show that he cares about the poor and struggling people and he really
wants to help them. This is also a different type of writing from Swift, who usually is always
criticizing someone rather than showing empathy for them. But since Swift disagrees with the English
so much, he chooses to write about it and make those with wealth and power look evil and selfish.
Swift who chose not to make it known he was writing this satire, continues to bash England on page
509 by saying, I fortunately fell upon this proposal; which, as it is wholly new, so it hath something
solid and real, of no expence, and little trouble, full in our own power; and whereby we can incur no
danger in disobliging England: for this kind of commodity will not bear exportation; the flesh being of
too tender a consistence, to admit a long continuance in salt; although, perhaps, I could name a
country, which would be glad to eat up our whole nation without it . Here, once again Swift shows that
England has no problem with the Irish starving and not being able to survive or make money as long
as the rich and powerful are facing no hardships. Also by using the words eat up he is going back to
the idea of cannibalism, not by the poor but by the wealthy who are taking what is left of the the other
nations to become more powerful and to gain more

Satire As A Satire
Comedy is a fickle medium. It is hard for a comedian to predict how an audience or individuals will
react to a joke. Satire is even more uncertain due the medium s socio political nature. The purpose of
satire can be misconstrued due to its tendency to obscure or simplify the point it is trying to make for
the sake of a joke. In Mathew Bevis Taking Liberties , he argues that individuals with different world
views can interpret a satirical piece in very different ways. In this paper, I shall use the satirical sketch
A Politically Correct Minute by the Royal Canadian Air Farce to argue that satire becomes and
ineffective tool in conveying a political message due to Bevis argument that the viewer shapes the
meaning of the sketch. The creator might have tried to establish a moral high ground, but it is hard to
defend due to the medium being reliant on the viewers sensibilities over the creator s intent, thus
making us unsure if a moral high ground actually exists. The Canadian satirical comedy troupe, The
Royal Canadian Air Farce, released the A Politically Correct Minute sketch in October 2001. This
sketch was a reaction to a petition created that year by the feminist organization, The Famous Five

Consumer Culture And Economic Development Of Western Cultures
Consumer Culture is at the root of all social, political and economic development of western cultures
for the past three hundred years. Advertisements become a key role in creating ideological messages
and meanings. In a consumer culture and capitalist economy, advertisement becomes a tool used by
corporations to influence the minds of the buyer. When a company produces an ad or commercial,
their main objective is to get the viewers attention in order to sell the product. Many different methods
are used to lure an audience in; tactics may include print or commercial ads, to either inform or to
target individuals into consuming goods. There have been constant debates surrounding females in
advertisements and the ways in which women are defined through their constructed identities. Society
plays a heavy hand in constructing individuals gender roles, and in turn many of our identities.
Women during the 1950s and onwards have been a byproduct in advertising campaigns, their roles
were limited and became repetitive overtime. A women s identity was constructed towards the ability
to maintain a household, women were only ever viewed as housewives, through the multiple
advertisements that conveyed images of what it meant to be a well rounded caregiver, it became the
only thing that was ever taught to them. Shirley Chisholm is recognized for her famously outspoken

Peet says Mechanization raises the surplus exploitable by the owners of the means of production by
increasing the productivity of labor, and thus increases the capital available for reinvestment in more
machinery, facilities, and raw materials (566). This means that as economic development takes place,
the relative demand for labor falls because mechanization provides and faster and more efficient
means of production. Production costs become more and more the costs of depreciating machinery
and less and less the costs of hiring labor as machines are increasingly used to increase capital. As
mechanization proceeds, unemployment increases and a labor reserve army is created. Under
capitalism, economic development does not proceed smoothly. There are sudden bursts of expansion
and even old declining industries bloom during economic booms. Peet says In such a situation the
economy needs a quick transfusion of labor; a labor reserve is necessary, to be pulled into the labor
force when needed, and discharged just as rapidly when demand slackens or mechanization proceeds
(567). In other words, the labor reserve prevents surplus value from being diverted from capital
accumulation to labor; thus, serving its role under capitalism. The Marxist argument, therefore, is that
inequality is not a temporary aberation nor poverty a surprising paradox in advanced capitalist
societies: instead inequality and poverty are vital to the normal operation of

Richard Trenton Chase, unlike regular children had a very abusive childhood. Raised by a very
controlling father who did not get along with his mentally ill wife and always misdirected his anger
toward Richard and his sister with physical abuse (Dennison, Victoria, 2009). As a child at age 10
Richard became extremely fascinated with fire and mutilating cats. Later throughout his teenage years
he began heavily drinking and smoking. This soon led up to his hectic early adulthood when he was
then diagnosed as a paranoid schizophrenic who suffered from somatic delusions. (Ramsland,
Katherine). According to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, paranoid
schizophrenia, is the presence of prominent delusions or auditory hallucinations in the context of
relative preservation of cognitive functioning and affect (APA, 1994 p.287). Since this subtype of
schizophrenia affects the cognitive portion of the brain that perceives things, in this person, it causes
him to also suffer from somatic delusions. This is a type of delusion that relates to the functions,
sensations, and physical appearance of the body, causing the person to believe that their body is
diseased or abnormal (APA, 2000). As a child it was thought that Richard had suffered from a mental
illness, but he was not committed. Although on the outside looking in, it looked as if he was the
average child since he did graduate high school, but no one knew the darkness that was kept hidden.

Compare And Contrast Heydrich And Ernest Shackleton
(STATE THESIS) When it comes to the leading their respective teams, Ernest Shackleton and
Reinhard Heydrich s approaches to leadership could not be more contradictory. This is not to say that
their differences make either of them a good or misleader. Each individual demonstrated qualities that
would classify him in either category. However, it is ultimately the intentions of the leader and the
presence of or complete disregard for humanity that categorizes each man where he falls.
Holistically, in order to determine what makes an individual an effective leader or a misleader, one
must first understand the aspects of leadership. While it is impossible to condense what makes a leader
into a short list of qualities and ideas, for the intent of this paper, the comparative aspects of leadership
will be limited to: character, skills/talent, and results.
To begin, character can be understood as the mental and moral qualities distinctive to an individual.
Warren Buffet was quoted saying, there are three main qualities involved in leadership: integrity,
intelligence, and energy; without the first, the other two will kill you, (Warren Buffet). In reference to
Ernest Shackleton, the mariner was known by his crew to be optimistic, generous, and fair. At the
beginning of their expedition, however, these qualities were subdued by Shackleton s hubris. It should

How Do Church Buildings Have Changed Over Time
The church structures have changed drastically over time. In the beginning of the Church History,
places of worship were simple stone buildings, with the primary focus being on praising God and
having a place to hold the sacraments. Monasteries were a common worship center as well. The
simple designs have been revamped. By the time of the Renaissance, churches were created to be
magnificent places for prayer and to give thanks to God. Since then, church structures have only
progressed in design. These designs can vary dramatically depending on the location of the church.
However, all churches share some of the same building and design techniques. Stain glass windows,
for example, are some of the most beautiful features found in many churches today. Valuable features
like these create the elegance of these buildings. Some of the most elaborate church buildings now are

Introduction
For years now economist have been debating about inflation and unemployment whether it is possible
to achieve both of this main macroeconomic goals , which is low inflation and low unemployment in
the economy at the same time without harming the economy. In this case it remains one of the
challenge that face most of developing countries that include Namibia, to sustain the low inflation and
low unemployment rate. Philips curve was emerged in 1960 in United Kingdom, was named after A.
W. Philips the founder of Philips curve. Philips curve suggested that there is inverse relationship
between inflation and unemployment and there are three assumptions of Philips curve: the first one is
that in the short run there is trade off between unemployment and inflation. The second assumption is
that aggregate supply can break the concept of Philips curve because it can cause the stagnation that is
high unemployment and high inflation. And the final assumption is that in the long run there is no
significant trade off between unemployment and inflation. The economist like (McConnell 16th
edition) has best interest to identify their relationship; in the short run there is trade off between
unemployment and inflation. In this view different studies in different countries have found out

The film, Sister Act, is a humorous story about a woman, Delores Van Cartier, who goes into hiding
from her shady lover at a Catholic convent. Sister Act has many Christian references, specifically

to develop and he started to want more intimacy and commitment. That moment was when the Nazis
invaded Paris, and Rick and Ilsa decided to run away. Rick proposed to Ilsa and she didn t really
accept. When Ilsa stood Rick up in the train station the intimacy and commitment that he wanted
faded away, just like the writing on the letter faded away because of the rain. In his face, however, it
could still be seen that the passion remained there. In the end of the movie when Rick says: We ll
always have Paris. We didn t have, we d lost it, until you came to Casablanca. We got it back last
night. He seems to accept that all he and Ilsa have ever had was a passionate relationship and that it
was not supposed to last forever.
The other love relationship portrayed in Casablanca is the intimate relationship between Ilsa and
Laszlo. As opposed to the relationship between Ilsa and Rick, this one has high levels of

Human-Less Warriors Essay
As bloody wars drag on in Iraq and Afghanistan the United States military increasingly turns to human
less warriors to stem the loss of lives. The MQ 1 Predator and MQ 9 Reaper aerial drones are seeing
an increase in use, while remote controlled robots are being used to dispose of improvised explosive
devises. At what point do these computer systems move from machines capable of unethical actions,
to machines whose very existence is unethical? I argue that fully automated systems should not be
used in an offensive manner; rather they can only see ethical uses in limited defensive roles. In
exploring this question I will draw on the only fully autonomous US armed forces weapon system I
am aware of, the Phalanx CIWS, a missile defense system ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Phalanx checks that the missile is coming toward the ship, it does this to avoid shooting down friendly
missiles. It checks to see if the missile is able to hit the ship, based on its speed and heading. It also
checks to see if the missile fits within a velocity bracket in which missiles tend to fall. These are not
an exhaustive list of fail safes to ensure Phalanx only engages enemy projectiles, however it gives an
idea of the design thinking behind the system.
I believe that Phalanx CIWS falls into the third category presented in Who s in Charge of the Chip?,
that category being machines capable of harmful consequences. I believe it falls into this one by the
process of elimination, it isn t designed with a malicious intent, quite the opposite, its intent is to
protect. Secondly, it seems to have been designed with safety in mind as there are a battery of
conditions that must be fulfilled in order for the gun to fire. This leaves only the third category as a
possibility. As I am about to show the Phalanx has been shown capable of causing bad consequences. I
found two instances where a Phalanx system has acted in a way we would deem undesirable. First, in
February 1991, during the First Gulf War, a Phalanx system aboard the frigate USS Jarrett fired upon
the battleship USS Missouri. The ships were around three miles apart when they fell under attack from
an Iraqi missile.

Archeology In Raiders Of The Lost Ark
Definition of Archeology
Uninformed people might think that archaeology is the stuff of Indiana Jones, the character played by
Harrison Ford in the classic 1981 Movie entitled Raiders of the Lost Ark. In this movie, Jones was an
adventurer and so called archaeologist who sought a golden idol. Jones did not proceed in an orderly,
scientific fashion, nor record the surroundings, location, or precise measurements.
There are many different definitions for archeology, and here are a few: Archeology is the study of
human history and prehistory through the excavation of sites and the analysis of artifacts and other
physical remains says one source, It is an area of science that studies people and animals from the past
and the things they ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This research uncovers the written records associated with the area of interest. In addition to primary
historical documents, archaeologists will look for site reports that have been prepared by other
archaeologists who have studied the area. These reports will often describe what was found in the area
during any previous archaeological investigations and will help guide the archeologists to new
discoveries. The archives today are stored on huge computer systems and can be recovered at anytime
thanks to easy navigation instead of having to look through thousands maybe even hundreds of
thousands of documents to find what your looking

Even the richest countries buy raw materials for their industries from the poorest countries. If every
country produces only for its own needs, then production and consumption of goods would be limited.
Clearly, such situation hampers economic progress. Furthermore, the standard of living of the people
all over the world would have no chance to improve. Because of international trade, people with
money can acquire goods and services which are not available in their own countries. Hence,
satisfaction of consumers can be maximized.(hubpages, 2011)
Economic integration and global markets to UK business organizations
Globalization gives companies access to wider markets and consumers access to a greater variety of
goods and services. But the benefits of globalization are not always shared by all of the parties
involved in trade. Unfortunately, developing countries which need the potential benefits of
globalization the most are often the losers. The downside of global capitalism is the disruption of
whole societies, from financial meltdowns to practices by multinationals that would never be tolerated
in the West, the Business Week article noted. Industrialized countries have enacted all sorts of worker,
consumer, and environmental safeguards since the turn of the century, and civil rights have a strong
tradition. But the global economy is pretty much still in the robber baron age.

How Nikola Tesla Changed America
Sam Larsen
Mr. Snelgrove
English 12
9 September 2014
A Man Who Changed America Imagine a world with a power plant every two miles, a massive
amount of wiring and overall more expensive power. This was the world that Thomas Edison
envisioned for the world when he wanted to introduce Direct Current into the United States, but many
knew this was an inferior system in comparison to Alternating Current. Nikola Tesla was the man who
made AC power possible in the United States, and efficient power possible. Nikola Tesla indeed
changed the world with his influence as an inventor and discoveries in the field of electricity. Tesla
indeed changed the world through his inventions and was also an extremely interesting human being.
Tesla was ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
He was quite charismatic when he did go to social gatherings, he was a positive influence on others
and was such a unique personality that he became good friends with Mark Twain, spending large
amounts of time with him. His oddness is what makes him such an interesting person along with his
amazing findings in the scientific field. He was incredibly germophobic, refusing to shake hands with
people and found people who weren t clean appalling. He detested overweight people, firing his
secretary for being overweight. He was obsessed with the number three, he lived most of his life in a
hotel room number 3327 and on the thirty third floor, both divisible by three. He absolutely hated
pearls, they made him sick to his stomach. Later in his life his mind began to drift to the more
absolutely senile region on the insanity scale, he told people that he could create a death ray, saying
that he could fire a condensed amount of particles long distances to kill someone. He thought that
humans should be selectively bred, eliminating the lesser of the species, granted that was a popular
opinion at the time. The most insane obsession he had was with pigeons, he said he had fed thousands
of pigeons over the years. He fell in love with one of the pigeons, saying I have been feeding pigeons,
thousands of them for years. But there was one, a beautiful bird, pure white with light grey tips on its
wings; that one was different. It was a female. I had only to wish and call her and she would come
flying to me. I loved that pigeon as a man loves a woman, and she loved me. As long as I had her,
there was a purpose to my life (Sei) Tesla s diet was also extremely queer in his later years, not only
was he a vegetarian but had an extremely limited diet because of his dire financial circumstances in
his later years. Obviously

Generation Reserve Is An Important Factor In Generation
Generation reserve is an important factor in generation planning or operating process, as discussed in
the previous chapter, subsection 3.1. Traditionally, fixed percentage of the peak load is used as a
reserve for planning purpose and another one for operating purpose. On solar generation system, both
of generation and load are variable. This behavior is extremely confusing in appropriate reserve
estimation. Solar PV power changes during the day, season and month. Moreover, clouds affects badly
on PV generated power, as discussed in section 2. This part discusses new techniques of generation
reserve estimation depending on a new reliability index called Clouds Effect On Load Loss or
CEOLL. This index is inspired from traditional LOLP ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
PDischarge: is the partial load power covered by storage discharge. PCharge: is the needed power for
storage charging during sunshine time. Fig. 3.6 shows a typical case of solar radiation and estimating
process of load curve level. Battery charging and discharging areas are denoted as A and B
respectively. (a) (b) (d) Fig.3.6. Battery charge Discharge Demand loads. Clouds Effect On Load Loss
CEOLL Loading capacity and reserve calculation are usually calculated from generating plant rated
capacity. PV power plants have varying capacity according to expected solar radiation. Therefore,
fixed loading level or constant reserve range can t fit varying behavior of PV power. This study
propose new reliability index that defines appropriate reserve/ loading level monthly. Loading level is
calculated according to related clear sky solar radiation. By using CEOLL index, reliable reserve level
can be checked and adapted in case of cloudy weather. CEOLL can be represented mathematically as
follows: CEOLL= ( ∑_k▒P_k *〖LOL〗_k*t_k ) / tt W/m2 (3) Where: CEOLL: is clouds effect on
load loss index k: is the studied time interval per day, Pk: is probability for outage solar generation, 〖
LOL〗_k : is Loss Of Load from clear solar radiation

  • 2. Analysis Of Honour Killing By Imtiaz Dharker Commentary: Honour Killing by Imtiaz Dharker This commentary will be centred on the 2001 piece Honour Killing written by Imtiaz Dharker. In this commentary I aim to give an in depth analysis and thoughtful critique of lexical and descriptive devices used within her free verse poem; in doing so I will address the deeper contextual elements highlighted within her work. The poem Honour Killing details a woman s struggle for freedom and reclamation of her own identity. The main focal point of this poem is finding one s self and staying true who you are despite what your culture or societies tells you to do. Throughout the poem the poet highlights both religious and culture related issues associated with women in South Asia. Before analysing the poem, it is important to understand some of the contextual elements within the piece, such as honour killings and religion. The term honour killing refers to the murder of a relative, usually a girl or women who is believed to have brought shame upon the family . This definition is particularly important to this poem as it is the title. This word holds great significance to women in south Asia as women in Pakistan live in a society which has only recently started condemning this type of practise. In addition to honour killings being an important factor within the poem the idea of religion, more specially Islam is referenced. I m taking off this veil is referencing the hijab that is a religious head dress often worn by Muslim women, for the purpose of concealing their beauty and retaining modesty. The main themes within the poem Honour killing are culture, religion and self expression/ freedom. The writer showcases these themes through the use of metaphors and imagery which are related to the religions Islam and Hinduism. The use of lexis such as veil and Mangal sutra highlight not only the theme of religion but also culture as the Mangal sutra is a symbol of marriage and is worn by the bride until her husband s death. The wearing of a Mangal sutra is a sacred custom within the Hindu faith which can also be a big cultural tradition. The incorporation of these particular cultural references allows the reader some insight into the life style and ethnic ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Diagnosed with osteosarcoma in 1977, he was determined to make the world aware of this type of cancer and raise money for cancer research. When Terry was diagnosed, doctors declared that he had less than a 50% chance of survival. He then was required to have one of his legs amputated. Just three weeks after his surgery, he was active and joined a wheelchair basketball league. During that time, he read an article about a man participating in the New York Marathon who was amputated just as he was. Terry decided if he could run across Canada on one strong leg, he would be able to make people aware of this cancer and raise money for it. His race began on August 12th 1979. As he endured tough weather conditions throughout the month of August, word began to spread worldwide. A few weeks after he left his hometown to begin this magnificent expedition, he reached Toronto. It is estimated on that one day he raised over 100 million dollars. Terry had every intention to finish his marathon, but physically he could not. • 8. The Role Of Women In EuripidesBacchae Throughout Euripides Bacchae, there are plot elements, which seem out of place for a tragedy, such as Pentheus frolicking around in women s clothing. However, these out of place comedic elements serve as a way to highlight the underlying conflicts in the play. One of these seemingly out of place plot elements is the comedic way Agave handles the death of her child. On the surface, her comedic behave or depicts women as foolish and weak, therefore making women seem inferior to men. However understanding Agave s comedic behavior reveals the underlying conflict between how women should behave in society versus how they behave in the story. Therefore, understanding the way Agave handles the death of her son emphasizes the role of women in the patriarchal Greek society. Understand the underlying meaning of Agave s comical behavior illustrates the oppression the women face in the patriarchal Greek society. On the surface, the comedic way Agave handles her son s death presents women as foolish and weak. Agave is oblivious that with hands alone . . . [she] caught [Pentheus] and tore [him] limb from limb even though she holds his head in her hands (Bacchae 1209/10). Consistently, Agave believes that the bloody item she holds in her hand is the head of a lion, rather than the head of her own beloved child. Agave s obliviousness is a form of dramatic irony, which Euripides uses on the surface to represent Agave, as well as the other women, as rationally inferior to men. This ... • 10. A Code Of Ethics Limits The Development Of Psychological... Discussion of the claim that adherence to a code of ethics limits the development of psychological theory The introduction of the Nuremberg Code in 1947 was a direct consequence of the Nuremberg Trials in which various Nazi doctors were found guilty of carrying out brutal and heinous research experiments on humans during the second World War. Subsequently, the key principles contained in the Code became the basis of ethical behaviour in any medical or psychological research which includes the involvement of human participants (cited in Banyard, 2012). It is now universally understood that the health, safety, wellbeing and human rights of every research study participant is protected. Conversely, it is the opinion of some that the introduction of the Nuremberg Code has resulted in limitations to the results obtained from these research studies, and, as a result, to the development of psychological theory. It is the purpose of this essay, therefore, to address the claim that adhering to a code of ethics limits the development of psychological theory. In the paragraphs to follow, various evidence and alternative viewpoints will be provided both for and against this claim, as well as an evaluation of the impact in adhering to these ethical principles for researchers. One such research study to be criticised on the basis of ethical behaviour was designed to study obedience and authority using human participants (Milgram, 1961). Both forms have a distinctive history, definition, economic benefits and environmental impact. Although both are growing at lightning speed, especially as our societies become wealthier and eager to explore the world around them, the biggest dilemma lies on which, ecotourism or tourism, is a better alternative to pursue to balance economic development and environmental protection. To find the answer, we need to analyze and compare the main premises about the two topics. In regards to history, the idea of being a tourist has been around for centuries. As we saw previously, humans have dreamed of traveling and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In David Fennell s argument, we can t properly define tourism because we might leave a key element economic activity out, especially if we understand that just in the category of attractions we have museums, festivals, sports, cinemas, theme parks and others. The array of options in the industry of tourism has made it one of the fastest growing economic sectors in the world. However, its massive scope might not make tourism the best environmental alternative. In the case of ecotourism s definition and scope, it is easier to understand its objective. In Martha Honey s book, she introduced us to the seven characteristics of real ecotourism, which clearly limit the definition to activities to natural destinations with an environmental educational purpose and with the objective of benefiting financially local people and conservation areas. Based on that definition, ecotourism is a better environmental alternative than regular tourism. However, its limited scope and smaller scale programs place ecotourism at a disadvantage regarding financial development. In terms of economic benefits, the tourism industry has been growing at an unprecedented speed. It ranks number third in exports category with 7% of the yearly totals. This is where rhetoric can be significant in this leader s life their knowledge of rhetoric can drastically improve or dismantle their career. Shakespeare s ability to slowly mold leaders out of insignificant characters proves to be a very entertaining . Introducing a character that shows little or no traits of a natural born leaders and putting them in situations that forces them to reveal how much of an actual leader they actually are. This is what intrigues about some of shakespeare s plays his ability to develop a character and place him in this leadership position that ends up being a perfect fit for them. One character that was probably seen as a unlikely leader and was slowly pushed into a position where his leadership would be of the highest significance to revenge the murder of his friend was in Shakespeare s play Julius Caesar Antony is introduced to us as one of caesar s most trusted and later revealed truest friend this loyalty can be seen as one of the most important leadership traits that antony has. However even though his friendship is a vital role and a fundamental reason that he is put in the spotlight it does not cement him as a key influential leader. • 20. Cultural Relativism And Diversity According to society s knowledge, many can come to an agreement that cultural relativism and diversity can play a huge effect on whether different cultures and traditions share the same respect for morals and values towards each other. However, these two things can be considered as two widespread theories that are used to explain the differences amongst different varieties of cultures, their ethics, and their morals. Between the two theories, both characterize the moral, ethical, and societal differences that diverse cultures experience. From recalling the discussion of whether everything is relative cultural, relativism is defined as to the aspect of all beliefs, customs, and ethics being relative as to the individual within his/her own social ... We should try to embrace and honor the rich dimensions of diversification that is embodied within each individual in a way that is customary to fit one s personality. This is better known as their own characterization or virtue. In Benedict s The Case for Moral Relativism he states, It is hard for us, born and brought up in a culture that makes no use of the experience, to realize how important a role it may play and how many individuals are capable of it, once it has been given an honorable place in any society... (page 133). From this, he claims that from childhood to adulthood we are raised within certain standards of morals and considered to be categorized within groups. These standards are unique to each group of people. As we grow out of childhood, we become aware of the set of morals and values that have a tendency to change over age and time. I personally do believe that morals will continue to change overtime, and due to this, different culture variations will hold different cultural values and morals. It is hard to imagine a world in which we all believe the same things are right and wrong. In Why Morality Is Not Relative James Rachels summarizes the theory into one brief statement: To many thinkers, this observation Different cultures have different moral codes has seemed to be the key to understanding morality (page 139). • 21. Musical Theatre An accomplished American lyricist and composer, Stephen Sondheim, once said: All the best performers bring to their role something more, something different than what the author put on paper. That s what makes theatre live. That s why it persists . Through my experiences in musical theatre, both in elementary school and high school, I have come to realize that the script is the backbone, or the base with which the actor begins to create. All of the words written down on paper are one dimensional; they are flat. It is only when an actor gives those words a voice that the character begins to come alive. An actor adds all of the other essential layers to the backbone, and suddenly, there are movements, expressions and emotions to fit with the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... That is the beauty about theatre. Each performer has a different interpretation of a character, because they draw upon their own personal experiences in the attempt to connect with their character on a deeper level. This is why musicals live on, and are repeatedly performed on Broadway. Although the characters and the plot are ever present, the actors will change from year to year, or sometimes even from show to show. Therefore, not one show will be the exact same. Every performer brings something different to their role, connecting with their character in a way that no one else ever will; that is unique only to them. This rings true for my performance in the musical Fame. Having a double cast, each character was shared between two people, thus allowing for differentiation in the way in which the characters were interpreted and played. For example, I played Iris s character in a way that was unique to how Katie Smith played the character. Even though we spoke the exact same lines, we interpreted these lines differently, making them our own and molding a character from our own thoughts, ideas, and personal experiences. Making these text to self connections (relating one s own experiences to a text, or in this case, a script) is essential when acting. To truly relate to the character in which one is acting, one must draw upon their own ideas and connect them to their character s feelings, emotions, behavior, etc. Forming these connections allows for one to step inside the character s shoes, and to truly become that specific character. In my personal experience of acting as Iris in the musical Fame, I felt as though Iris and I shared great similarities, and this is what helped me to relate with her character on an emotional level. • 22. Rhetorical Analysis Of Charlotte Perkins Gilman In literature, there are many different components that create a timeless and classic text, such as personification, imagery, or symbolism. In some texts an author uses overbearing amounts of imagery to give us a vivid description of what is happening in the story, in others an author may give very little visual details, but instead incorporate countless allusions to help the reader better understand their story by alluding other popular works. Through the use of themes and symbols, however, an author can show how he or she, or the society at the time of their writing, views a certain social movement or item. Effectively using multiple literary techniques makes a work of literature, not only satisfying to read, but it also gives it a sense of importance in understanding exactly why that piece was written, because every work of literature has its own reason for being made. Charlotte Perkins Gilman is one such author that has used themes and symbols to effectively give a certain story she wrote a large amount of importance in furthering her ideology with society and reformation at the time. The Yellow Wallpaper uses the symbolism of the story s title, confinement to the room, and the narrator s husband to reveal different themes about society at the time the book was written along with why Gilman wrote the story as she did. One in particular that stands out is the use of satire throughout both Gulliver s Travels , which tells the story of a series of voyages of Lemuel Gulliver s published in 1726, and A Modest Proposal , where Swift uses the idea of cannibalism to captivate his audience as well as focus on society s problems. Throughout Swift s life, politics and religion had a huge impact on him and more importantly, his writing. This is also a different type of writing from Swift, who usually is always criticizing someone rather than showing empathy for them. But since Swift disagrees with the English so much, he chooses to write about it and make those with wealth and power look evil and selfish. Swift who chose not to make it known he was writing this satire, continues to bash England on page 509 by saying, I fortunately fell upon this proposal; which, as it is wholly new, so it hath something solid and real, of no expence, and little trouble, full in our own power; and whereby we can incur no danger in disobliging England: for this kind of commodity will not bear exportation; the flesh being of too tender a consistence, to admit a long continuance in salt; although, perhaps, I could name a country, which would be glad to eat up our whole nation without it . Here, once again Swift shows that England has no problem with the Irish starving and not being able to survive or make money as long as the rich and powerful are facing no hardships. Satire is even more uncertain due the medium s socio political nature. The purpose of satire can be misconstrued due to its tendency to obscure or simplify the point it is trying to make for the sake of a joke. In Mathew Bevis Taking Liberties , he argues that individuals with different world views can interpret a satirical piece in very different ways. In this paper, I shall use the satirical sketch A Politically Correct Minute by the Royal Canadian Air Farce to argue that satire becomes and ineffective tool in conveying a political message due to Bevis argument that the viewer shapes the meaning of the sketch. The creator might have tried to establish a moral high ground, but it is hard to defend due to the medium being reliant on the viewers sensibilities over the creator s intent, thus making us unsure if a moral high ground actually exists. Consumer Culture And Economic Development Of Western Cultures Consumer Culture is at the root of all social, political and economic development of western cultures for the past three hundred years. Advertisements become a key role in creating ideological messages and meanings. In a consumer culture and capitalist economy, advertisement becomes a tool used by corporations to influence the minds of the buyer. When a company produces an ad or commercial, their main objective is to get the viewers attention in order to sell the product. Many different methods are used to lure an audience in; tactics may include print or commercial ads, to either inform or to target individuals into consuming goods. There have been constant debates surrounding females in advertisements and the ways in which women are defined through their constructed identities. Society plays a heavy hand in constructing individuals gender roles, and in turn many of our identities. Women during the 1950s and onwards have been a byproduct in advertising campaigns, their roles were limited and became repetitive overtime. Peet says Mechanization raises the surplus exploitable by the owners of the means of production by increasing the productivity of labor, and thus increases the capital available for reinvestment in more machinery, facilities, and raw materials (566). This means that as economic development takes place, the relative demand for labor falls because mechanization provides and faster and more efficient means of production. Production costs become more and more the costs of depreciating machinery and less and less the costs of hiring labor as machines are increasingly used to increase capital. As mechanization proceeds, unemployment increases and a labor reserve army is created. Under capitalism, economic development does not proceed smoothly. There are sudden bursts of expansion and even old declining industries bloom during economic booms. Peet says In such a situation the economy needs a quick transfusion of labor; a labor reserve is necessary, to be pulled into the labor force when needed, and discharged just as rapidly when demand slackens or mechanization proceeds (567). In other words, the labor reserve prevents surplus value from being diverted from capital accumulation to labor; thus, serving its role under capitalism. Compare And Contrast Heydrich And Ernest Shackleton (STATE THESIS) When it comes to the leading their respective teams, Ernest Shackleton and Reinhard Heydrich s approaches to leadership could not be more contradictory. This is not to say that their differences make either of them a good or misleader. Each individual demonstrated qualities that would classify him in either category. However, it is ultimately the intentions of the leader and the presence of or complete disregard for humanity that categorizes each man where he falls. Holistically, in order to determine what makes an individual an effective leader or a misleader, one must first understand the aspects of leadership. While it is impossible to condense what makes a leader into a short list of qualities and ideas, for the intent of this paper, the comparative aspects of leadership will be limited to: character, skills/talent, and results. To begin, character can be understood as the mental and moral qualities distinctive to an individual. This is the start of Delores captivating adventure in the Catholic Church. When Delores arrives at the convent, she is appalled that she must go undercover as a nun. She grew up in a Catholic school, and had horrendous experiences with the nun teacher and, therefore, was not looking forward to her temporary life. She begins her nunnery being vastly disobedient and flamboyant, too much for the strict Mother Superior. Eventually Delores is forced to join the struggling choir as a disciplinary measure, and ends up finding her place among the nuns. Delores, renamed Sister Mary Clarence, dedicates her time at the convent to improving the choir far beyond expectations. The convent and mass service improve tremendously, filling up the pews with large congregations. Sister Mary becomes exceedingly popular in the eyes of the nuns and surrounding community. Eventually, Vince finds her hiding place among the nuns and rushes ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 39. Two Kinds of Love in Movie Casablanca Essay Two Kinds of Love in Movie Casablanca In the movie Casablanca, directed by Michael Curtiz, two different kinds of love are exposed. The love relationship between Ilsa Lund and Rick is a more passionate relationship while the one between Ilsa and Victor Laszlo is more intimate. Love is composed of different feelings and because of that it can be expressed, as seen in Casablanca, in different ways. The Intimate Relationship Mind , a text by Garth J. O. Fletcher and Megan Stenswick, helps support that claim providing a scientific background on how love is shaped by those different feelings. It says that love is composed of three distinct and basic components that each represent evolved adaptations; namely, intimacy, commitment, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... If two lovers do not share their past with each other it is clear that they are not exactly intimate or committed. Intimacy and commitment would require trust and sharing things besides their own bodies, it seems that was not their case. The Intimate Relationship Mind says that in flings or one night stands, passion can run high, whereas intimacy and commitment are probably low (75). Rick and Ilsa s relationship seemed to work like that. Nevertheless, there was a moment when Rick s feeling started to develop and he started to want more intimacy and commitment. That moment was when the Nazis invaded Paris, and Rick and Ilsa decided to run away. Rick proposed to Ilsa and she didn t really accept. When Ilsa stood Rick up in the train station the intimacy and commitment that he wanted faded away, just like the writing on the letter faded away because of the rain. In his face, however, it could still be seen that the passion remained there. In the end of the movie when Rick says: We ll always have Paris. We didn t have, we d lost it, until you came to Casablanca. We got it back last night. He seems to accept that all he and Ilsa have ever had was a passionate relationship and that it was not supposed to last forever. The other love relationship portrayed in Casablanca is the intimate relationship between Ilsa and Laszlo. As opposed to the relationship between Ilsa and Rick, this one has high levels of ... The MQ 1 Predator and MQ 9 Reaper aerial drones are seeing an increase in use, while remote controlled robots are being used to dispose of improvised explosive devises. At what point do these computer systems move from machines capable of unethical actions, to machines whose very existence is unethical? I argue that fully automated systems should not be used in an offensive manner; rather they can only see ethical uses in limited defensive roles. In exploring this question I will draw on the only fully autonomous US armed forces weapon system I am aware of, the Phalanx CIWS, a missile defense system ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Phalanx checks that the missile is coming toward the ship, it does this to avoid shooting down friendly missiles. It checks to see if the missile is able to hit the ship, based on its speed and heading. It also checks to see if the missile fits within a velocity bracket in which missiles tend to fall. These are not an exhaustive list of fail safes to ensure Phalanx only engages enemy projectiles, however it gives an idea of the design thinking behind the system. I believe that Phalanx CIWS falls into the third category presented in Who s in Charge of the Chip?, that category being machines capable of harmful consequences. I believe it falls into this one by the process of elimination, it isn t designed with a malicious intent, quite the opposite, its intent is to protect. Secondly, it seems to have been designed with safety in mind as there are a battery of conditions that must be fulfilled in order for the gun to fire. This leaves only the third category as a possibility. As I am about to show the Phalanx has been shown capable of causing bad consequences. I found two instances where a Phalanx system has acted in a way we would deem undesirable. First, in February 1991, during the First Gulf War, a Phalanx system aboard the frigate USS Jarrett fired upon the battleship USS Missouri. The ships were around three miles apart when they fell under attack from an Iraqi missile. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Archeology In Raiders Of The Lost Ark Definition of Archeology Uninformed people might think that archaeology is the stuff of Indiana Jones, the character played by Harrison Ford in the classic 1981 Movie entitled Raiders of the Lost Ark. In this movie, Jones was an adventurer and so called archaeologist who sought a golden idol. Jones did not proceed in an orderly, scientific fashion, nor record the surroundings, location, or precise measurements. There are many different definitions for archeology, and here are a few: Archeology is the study of human history and prehistory through the excavation of sites and the analysis of artifacts and other physical remains says one source, It is an area of science that studies people and animals from the past and the things they ... If every country produces only for its own needs, then production and consumption of goods would be limited. Clearly, such situation hampers economic progress. Furthermore, the standard of living of the people all over the world would have no chance to improve. Because of international trade, people with money can acquire goods and services which are not available in their own countries. Hence, satisfaction of consumers can be maximized.(hubpages, 2011) Economic integration and global markets to UK business organizations Globalization gives companies access to wider markets and consumers access to a greater variety of goods and services. But the benefits of globalization are not always shared by all of the parties involved in trade. Unfortunately, developing countries which need the potential benefits of globalization the most are often the losers. The downside of global capitalism is the disruption of whole societies, from financial meltdowns to practices by multinationals that would never be tolerated in the West, the Business Week article noted. Industrialized countries have enacted all sorts of worker, consumer, and environmental safeguards since the turn of the century, and civil rights have a strong tradition. How Nikola Tesla Changed America Sam Larsen Mr. Snelgrove English 12 9 September 2014 A Man Who Changed America Imagine a world with a power plant every two miles, a massive amount of wiring and overall more expensive power. This was the world that Thomas Edison envisioned for the world when he wanted to introduce Direct Current into the United States, but many knew this was an inferior system in comparison to Alternating Current. Nikola Tesla was the man who made AC power possible in the United States, and efficient power possible. He was incredibly germophobic, refusing to shake hands with people and found people who weren t clean appalling. He detested overweight people, firing his secretary for being overweight. He was obsessed with the number three, he lived most of his life in a hotel room number 3327 and on the thirty third floor, both divisible by three. He absolutely hated pearls, they made him sick to his stomach. Later in his life his mind began to drift to the more absolutely senile region on the insanity scale, he told people that he could create a death ray, saying that he could fire a condensed amount of particles long distances to kill someone. He thought that humans should be selectively bred, eliminating the lesser of the species, granted that was a popular opinion at the time. The most insane obsession he had was with pigeons, he said he had fed thousands of pigeons over the years. He fell in love with one of the pigeons, saying I have been feeding pigeons, thousands of them for years. But there was one, a beautiful bird, pure white with light grey tips on its wings; that one was different. It was a female. I had only to wish and call her and she would come flying to me. I loved that pigeon as a man loves a woman, and she loved me. • 44. Generation Reserve Is An Important Factor In Generation Generation reserve is an important factor in generation planning or operating process, as discussed in the previous chapter, subsection 3.1. Traditionally, fixed percentage of the peak load is used as a reserve for planning purpose and another one for operating purpose. On solar generation system, both of generation and load are variable. This behavior is extremely confusing in appropriate reserve estimation. Solar PV power changes during the day, season and month. Moreover, clouds affects badly on PV generated power, as discussed in section 2. This part discusses new techniques of generation reserve estimation depending on a new reliability index called Clouds Effect On Load Loss or CEOLL. This index is inspired from traditional LOLP ... Fig. 3.6 shows a typical case of solar radiation and estimating process of load curve level. Battery charging and discharging areas are denoted as A and B respectively. (a) (b) (d) Fig.3.6. Battery charge Discharge Demand loads. Clouds Effect On Load Loss CEOLL Loading capacity and reserve calculation are usually calculated from generating plant rated capacity. PV power plants have varying capacity according to expected solar radiation. Therefore, fixed loading level or constant reserve range can t fit varying behavior of PV power. This study propose new reliability index that defines appropriate reserve/ loading level monthly. Loading level is calculated according to related clear sky solar radiation. By using CEOLL index, reliable reserve level can be checked and adapted in case of cloudy weather. CEOLL can be represented mathematically as follows: CEOLL= ( ∑_kâ–’P_k *〖LOL〗_k*t_k ) / tt W/m2 (3) Where: CEOLL: is clouds effect on load loss index k: is the studied time interval per day, Pk: is probability for outage solar generation, 〖 LOL〗_k : is Loss Of Load from clear solar radiation ...
