Becoming An Ally By White Americans
Becoming an Ally
When white Americans choose to self educate about systemic racism they can become allies in the
fight to dismantle racist structures in our society. Systemic racism is a theory that takes a look at how
individual, structural, and institutional forms of racism intersect, overlap, and create a deep rooted
form of prejudice and discrimination that advantages a cultural group at the expense of others in all
institutions of a society economics, political representation, the criminal justice system, employment,
and many others. (Luther College 2015). This includes discrimination affecting credit, schooling,
justice, residential location, etc. It can be eradicated in the next century, but not without white people
acknowledging that it is a real issue that cost lives. It is not the duty of the oppressed to make a liberty
sales pitch to their oppressors. However, it is the responsibility of those benefiting from the oppression
of others to become educated, listen, and use their privilege to combat injustice. Asian, Latino, Black,
and First Nations people respectively do not experience white supremacy in the same ways.
Throughout this essay I will focus on the systemic racism targeted at Black people, using the term
People of Color , coined by Black Feminists in the 1970s, abbreviated to PoC, to refer to them.
The first step to becoming an ally to People of Color is to become educated about the issue to
understand that racism did not disappear with the Civil

Sustainable Agriculture Is Not Good For The Environment
Sustainable agriculture means to manage farms in a way that does not exploit and deplete the natural
resources. Sustainable agriculture is when farmers adapt practices that enrich the soil, protect the
waterways, and enable biodiversity.
One best practice that supports sustainable agriculture is crop rotation. Crop rotation is not new; I
remember learning about this in the third grade. Soil needs time to rest, but an open field with exposed
soil is not good for the environment. Planting cover crops during this resting period keeps the soil in
tact and possible pesticides from running off and causing damage to our waterways. When we explore
natural fields and forests, we find a variety of plants. This is not by chance; nature has a way of
protecting the environment and embracing diversity. Farmers are realizing agriculture sustainability
when they learn from nature and intersperse their crops. Mixing crops provide natural pesticides,
protect the soil, and promotes biodiversity. Instead of acres and acres of the same plant, farmers are
learning that mixing up the crops can help enrich the soil and positively effects to the environment.
Farmers are also integrating farm animal production with their fields. When properly balanced, cattle
can graze fields that are resting. Cover crops such as clover protect the soil and are very healthy for
cattle. Nutrients are returned back to the soil in the form of mature, it is a natural cycle, and when
managed, has positive

Human Nature, Law, and English Boys Humans created moral law to govern themselves, and be able
to exist in civilized society, but people are arrogant and break these rules in order to gain control and
power over others. Lord of the Flies, a novel by William Golding, describes, using Hobbes theory of
human nature needing laws in order to stay civilized, a group of boys attempting to create a society.
Lord of the Flies is a story of a group of boys who crash landed on an island and are trying to create a
functioning society with a government. Hobbes theory of human nature says that human societies need
laws in order to stay civilized and not fall into savagery. The ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

From the very beginning the boys listen to Ralph s suggestions. The group has heard suggestions from
Piggy, Jack and Ralph but have only listened to the boy with the, size, and attractive appearance,
which shows their low standards for leaders. The boys base their decisions on the aesthetic appeal of
Ralph instead of his capability of leadership. The most powerful thing affecting the decision was the
conch, a major symbol of power and control. The conch is something that summons and silences the
boys, and allows them to speak during meetings. Hobbes theory says that human nature is basically
selfish and therefore they follow the leader who is most likely to give them what they want. Ralph
demonstrates what the boys want in that he calls for a vote, giving all they boys control over their
society. The boys are interested by Ralph which causes them to want to keep him around as something
to marvel at so they make him the leader. Toward the end of the novel, Piggy criticizes the behavior of
the boys in Jack s society which causes them to become very angry. Roger, on the cliff above them,
uses the lever to push a boulder aimed at Piggy. Golding wrote, ... the conch exploded into a thousand
white fragments and ceased to exist. Piggy...traveled through the air sideways from the rock, turning

Western Influence On John Hersey s Characters
Japanese has an immense effect on those in contact with it. Japanese is a culture with divine beliefs
and enormous pride in their culture. John Hersey explores the effects that culture and environment
have on an individual s views and beliefs; a stereotypical Japanese man , an Americanized Japanese
priest, and a widowed Japanese woman all react similarly to the bombing of Hiroshima. The influence
of Japanese culture has an astounding impact on the reactions of Hersey s characters. Japan is a
country of many cultures. Japan s most renowned is the art of the samurai and currently, urbanization.
Due to the American occupation in the pacific, Japanese moved from a cultural masterpiece, to an
eastern constitutional monarchy. Which is generally effected by a western influence. The effect of
Japanese culture on Dr. Sasaki is an example of home pride and cultural pride. Dr.Sasaki has been
surrounded by Japanese culture all his life and he in turn represents stereotypical Japanese culture. Dr.
Sasaki most closely represents stereotypical Japanese culture. As the narrator exclaims, Dr. Sasaki lost
all sense of profession and stopped working as a skillful surgeon and a sympathetic man; he became

bomb as a reaction to being in America for study purposes. As the narrator explains, Mr. Tanimoto
took four or five steps and threw himself between two big rocks in the garden. He bellied up very hard
against them. This shows Tanimoto s reaction to a bomb brought by American culture. The American
culture showed that he has to worry about himself before others. In return, he tried saving himself
instead of accepting his fate as a typical Japanese would. Mr. Tanimoto is a great representation of
American culture affecting someone s way of

Patriot Missile Crisis
Intro Ballistic missile defense became a necessity after World War II when Germany developed and
launched several missiles at targets around Europe. During the Cold War, the United States and Russia
began developing technologies to build and use long range missiles at a moment s notice. Before the
Gulf War and Desert Storm there were no systems to defend against theater ballistic missiles or TBM
s. The Patriot missile system had been developed in the 1970 s to counter threats from enemy aircrafts.
Shortly before the Gulf War, testing and production of the first PAC1 missiles had begun to be used
against Short range missiles. The use of the Patriot system had a huge impact to the success of the
Gulf War and Desert Storm by defending US and coalition assets in Saudi Arabia and Israel from Scud
Missile attacks by Iraqi Forces. Before World War II a German engineer, Wernher von Braun, had
begun working on rocket designs that eventually led to the development and launch of over 3000 ...

The impact only caused relatively small amounts of injuries and deaths but Israel was inclined to
retaliate. On 18 January 1991, the first interception of tactical ballistic missiles in combat occurred.
Alpha Battery, 2 7 ADA successfully intercepted Iraqi Scuds. The interceptions strengthened the trust
in the Patriot system. On 21 and 22 January, Patriot crews engaged more tactical ballistic missiles. As
Patriot successfully engaged more tactical ballistic missiles, there were fewer Scud launches. Air
Defense became a key component in collation planning. Air Defense units were attached to the
majority of ground units on the front lines moving into Iraq. Patriot proved their mobility while
attached to the 3rd Armored Cavalry and the XVIII Airborne during the Hail Mary sweep into Iraq.

Destiny Of The Republic Analysis
Destiny of the Republic was a story of the life and death of James A. Garfield. It was told in the
viewpoints of many different characters throughout the story but mainly in the viewpoint of James
Garfield, Charles Guiteau, and Alexander Graham Bell. Garfield was the 20th president of the United
States. His presidency was cut short when he was assassinated by Guiteau, and later Bell attempted to
Garfield make a recovery to continue his presidency. James Garfield was born into poverty on
November 19, 1831, in a log cabin in Ohio. Eliza, James s mother, wanted nothing more than a good
education for her son and he went to school for a while but then left to work at the canals in honor of
his father. He had a close call with death one late night when he almost drowned, this gave him the
realization that god had saved him for something greater than working on a canal. He went on to get a
better education and became a passionate and determined student. To pay for tuition Garfield worked
as a janitor and was later moved up to assistant professor. He wanted to be the top in his class. He was
accepted into Williams college an was one of the top five in his class. He graduated with honors and
returned to the Eclectic Institute where he became the school s president. Shortly after he married
Lucretia Rudolph and would later have six children. Ending his career in academics Garfield ran for
senator in 1859. About a year later James joined the Union in the Civil war. He was made a

The Celts And The Celtic World
Knowledge of the Celts and the Celtic world has been acquired and accumulated through a variety of
mediums such as archaeological evidence, geographical markings and most importantly, the
testimonies left by Greek and Roman writers. Without these writings, developing an image of the
nature of the Celts would be extremely difficult. Comparing two authors, Roman emperor, Julius
Caesar to Greek writer, Athenaeus, it may reveal some of the prejudices and biased views held against
the Celts, but more importantly by contrasting the views of these particular authors, it also offers a
well rounded account of the history and culture of these Celtic speaking people.
Athenaeus was a Greek writer, who wrote around the time of 200AD. He is the author of
Deipnosophistae, a piece of literature all about eating and dining traditions. Athenaeus is writing
during a time known as The Poseidonian Tradition; Poseidonios inspired a lot of Greek writers to
write and keep record of the Celts and their culture. Athenaeus quotes Poseidonios in his
Deipnosophistae as he has first hand experience of the Celts, having travelled around studying the
Celts. Poseidonios work only survives through the work of later authors, such as Athenaeus.
Athenaeus speaks of how Poseidonios observed the Celts during a feast, taking note of their customs,
Athenaeus discourse is written in such a way that the impression left is that the Greeks may have
considered themselves more evolved than the Celts they were

Examples Of Conflict In Tell Tale Heart
The conflict in Edgar Allan Poe s Tell Tale Heart is man versus himself. In the first lines of the story,
the speaker talks directly to the reader where he tries to convince the reader that he is not insane.
However, we discover that he is mentally ill as we read more of the story. The character speaks against
his purpose of pleading as mentally healthy. Ironically, his own speech convicts him. Therefore, it can
be concluded that the narrator is on a mind battle with his own conscience. The narrator s background
is a mystery to the reader but his characteristics were evidently presented on his way of narration. All
the obsessive details and the whole elaborate plan the man narrated was enough evidence to confirm
the reader that he is truly out of his mind. The narrator is obsessive, paranoid, and insane and these
characteristics are the problems which led to the conflict. His too much thinking attitude was his own
protagonist in the story. There is this eye which became the narrator s object of obsession. Whenever
he sees the old man, he doesn t see the old man as a whole but sees the evil eye . In ... Show more

possess a heart. He doesn t have the passionate sense of humanity that would guide him to use his wit
in achieving good goals. Instead, what happened was the reverse. The man used his powerful mind as
a tool for evilness. So, what the author wants to say is that intelligence is not enough to make up a
human being. One must have a heart which directs the head. This story entitled Tell Tale Heart is not
only about the beating heart which led the main character to reveal his own doing but the heart also
pertains to what is missing from him, a heart. Moreover, the story tells us that our conscience will
always hunt us on the evil deeds we performed. Our hearts will always reveal the truth even if we

Essay On Endometriosis
Endometriosis is a painful, yet should never be minimized. Is it usual that a teenager or women are
able to experience cramps and discomfort during menstrual periods? Yes , however, when the cramps,
increase with horrible pain, the bleeding does not stop after the menstrual period; it is a cause for a
parent or woman to worry. The pain is unbelievable, it makes you sweat and many women who
experience these would eventually get help and they discover that they have endometriosis. My story
will be discussed as well as knowing about endometriosis. Endometriosis is a painful, powerful nasty
disease in which the uterine lining moves outside the womb and grows in parts of the body. I was
diagnosed with Endometriosis in 1996; I was only 12 years of age. Doctors still believe that
endometriosis is rare in preteens, teenagers and young women; I can prove them wrong in many ways.
Therefore, they do not consider a diagnosis of endometriosis when preteens, teenagers and young
women complain of symptoms like abdominal pain, pelvic pain and menstrual periods due to them
being so young. On August 7, 1999, I went to my ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Porous Asphalt Research Paper
Asphalt pavement can be found on more than 94 percent of America s paved roads. Interstate
highways, urban streets and rural lanes all depend on asphalt for durable, smooth, economical
pavements. Asphalt pavement is also the most popular choice for parking lots. Despite the fact that
asphalt pavement is already environmentally friendly, the asphalt industry has worked tirelessly to
make it even more environmentally green. The latest development in green paving is porous asphalt.
What Is Porous Asphalt? Porous asphalt, which is sometimes called permeable asphalt, allows water
to infiltrate beneath the pavement. After the water percolates through the pavement, it reaches a
special drainage system that redirects the water back into the soil.

Taking Away Harm [2] In C. S. Lewis s breathtaking novel The Magician s Nephew, the Christian
themes of sin of pride, objected truth vs. relativism, and redemption are developed throughout Digory
s characterization in the novel. [1] Digory embodied sin of pride by wanting power or knowledge that
was not bestowed upon him. Digory and polly were in Charn and Polly told him not to foolishly strike
the bell, but Digory exclaimed We shall always be wondering what else would have happened if we

The mouthwash market can be segmented into three groups, based on the frequency of use:
1. heavy users: use the product once per day or more and constitute 40% of the market; heavy users
most likely want the basic features of a mouthwash that allow for their basic oral hygiene; their
knowledge of the product is not necessarily extensive, but since they use the product so frequently
they want the most benefit for the amount that they are spending on the product and price is probably
an important consideration in their purchasing decision.
2. medium users: use the product 2 6 times a week and represent 45% of the market; similar to the
heavy users, the medium users use the product consistently and are seeking the basic benefits of a
mouthwash as a part of their hygiene habits; they are concerned with the price of the product since
they buy it relatively frequently, and will most likely purchase a product that provides the most value
for their money.
3. light users: use the product less than 1 time a week and make up only 15% of the market; these
users make up a comparatively small segment of the market and do not buy or use the product as
frequently as the other segments;

Dbq Essay On The Colony Of John Winthrop
When starting a new colony, John Winthrop had a perfect utopia set up in his mind. Everyone would
get along with each other, everyone would be compassionate and helpful to everyone in the
community, and most of all, they would be a society based on relations and not God. Winthrop
realizes the various social classes people fit into, but he hopes that his city upon a hill will unite
everyone and make them all equal, regardless of social status. He hopes that the people who are in the
colony are good people, who will help anyone who needs it, when they need it. Last of all, he hopes
that the colony will keep the unity of the spirit in the bond of peace in order to become the city upon a
hill that he wants to be. In order to do this, God ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Document D follows a small section of Anne Hutchinson s trial where Winthrop himself is,
essentially, arguing with someone about a rumored rule breaking. This goes against his vision of
complete peace with others within the colony. This excerpt shows that the community would accept
everyone, but in the case of Hutchinson, they are pushing her away and trying to kick her out of the
colony because she is supposedly pushing her limits of freedom. This goes to show that even the
person who has the vision of the society will still push people around because they don t follow the
exact rules of freedom that are put into place. The fact that someone is still praying to God, and that
even the person who s vision it was to be a city upon a hill is going against his vision shows that the
colony is still far from achieving Winthrop s vision. The two documents are useful in the sense that
they delve further into a specific part of the society. The poem by Anne Bradstreet is vague because it
doesn t really talk much about the society as a whole, but of her own relation in the society. The
excerpt between Hutchinson and Winthrop shows the court written exchange, and could help prove
that the society isn t the exact vision of the society because Winthrop is clearly challenging

Honor Codes In Tobias Wolff s Old School
The existence of honor codes has had basis in helping students learn since their inception, but there
are still those who object to their very definition. Nearly every institution centered around the
education of children has some sort of code of conduct or set of rules in place for the betterment of the
students. However, the term honor in the title honor code is what people can occasionally take issue
with, as the term often implies a much more respectful idea. This issue leads one to question the
purpose of honor codes. Although honor codes, like that of the school in Tobias Wolff s Old School,
exist for the purpose of bettering the students by ensuring that they all have an equal chance and that
they all do their own work, Mr. Ramsey objects to his school s honor code because he believes in a
much more personal and valuable meaning of the word honor .
Honor codes and codes of conduct have existed for about as long as systems of institutionalized
education have, as they exist for the betterment of the students. Honor codes often consist of a set of
enumerated standards that the aforementioned institution holds its students to. Without them, students
cheating would go unregulated, which would overall just harm themselves, since it would be
detrimental to their learning experience. The use of outside advantage to garner better grades would
make it harder for the students to gain the help that they need, as well as allowing students to proceed

Baroque Art And Art
The Rococo era was an imaginatively experimental and colorful period of time in France in which
highly ornamented fashion and décor were at the forefront of fashion. The Rococo movement was
already vaguely invented during the Late Baroque era in Italy, but after gaining some headway, it was
then pushed by King Louis XV of France who was very interested in showcasing luxury, wealth, and
good taste of that time through art and fashion. By the mid 1700 s, the majority of France was sick of
the dull, looming, and dark aesthetic of the Baroque era. Once the Rococo era came about, home décor
and fashion consisted of much more brightly decorated, overwhelming colors and opulent designs and
textures. The concept of the Rococo was that more is better in terms of garments and fabrics, furniture,
and other leisurely activities and decor. Just as the Siamese delegation had a lasting effect on the court
of Louis XIV, so did the visit of an ambassadorial retinue led by Mehmed Efendi in 1720 1721,
stamping the court with all kinds of turquerie, enmeshing itself more freely with the lachinage of the
former century (remembering also that chinoiserie was very much alive and a central element to the
germination of the rococo), (Fashion and Orientalism, page 63). Another factor that played into the
Rococo was the fact that women had a bit more authority in the sense that they were allowed to hold
positions of power. This is why Madame de Pompadour was incredibly well known as she

the left and you see R2 D2 trying to communicate to you. To the right, you have rebel fighters
shooting at storm troopers that are attacking your home planet. Virtual reality lets you do all of this
from the comfort of your home. However, Augmented reality lets you do this as well, but it is less
virtual and more technological. Imaging walking down the street and you see a Pikachu on the side of
the road through technology based glasses. You are in the real world, but it is modified by the use of a
computer. How has Virtual and Augmented reality? evolved the video games industry ? The history of
video games goes all the way back to the 1930 s when the first coin operated entertainment was
invented. The first pinball machines were invented during this time and are still around with us today
in arcades and bars around the world. Video games around that time were actually called
Electromechanical games. Electromechanical gaming graphics were only as good as artists could draw
them. However, Electromechanical games were very limited. There was hard labor in assembling the
games because of their use of motors, coins, and mechanical brackets. Also, the cost of these
components were on the rise. Luckily, in the early 1960 s, Steve Russell programmed a PDP 1 to play

Essay on The Soviet Union and the Legacy of Communist Rule
The Soviet Union and the Legacy of Communist Rule
The December of 1991 marked the end of the Soviet Union and with it, an entire era. Like the
February Revolution of 1917 that ended tsardom, the events leading up to August 1991 took place in
rapid succession, with both spontaneity and, to some degree, retrospective inevitability. To understand
the demise of Soviet Union is to understand the communist party state system itself. Although the
particular happenings of the Gorbachev years undoubtedly accelerated its ruin, there existed
fundamental flaws within the Soviet system that would be had been proven ultimately fatal. The
USSR became a past chapter of history because it was impossible to significantly reform the

Mikhail Gorbachev, the new General Secretariat in 1985, seemed to represent this new generation of
power. After two decades of decaying social and economical conditions, it was clear that restructuring
of governmental policies were in dire need. As it was the only legal party allowed in the USSR until
the repeal of Article Six of the Constitution in 1990, the Communist Party, although conceptualized as
a homogenous dictating organization, had long harbored many variants of ideologies. The leadership
of Gorbachev was an accumulated manifestation of the reformist wing within the ruling elites. Such a
wing had always existed despite hard partiinost, and to Strayer they were the alternative tradition
which saw Leninism and democracy, the plan and the market, as compatible with each other (Strayer,
87). Gorbachev was a student of Khrushchev s thaw who moved much more skillfully than his
ideological predecessor at pushing for real reforms reforms that eventually destroyed the system they
were supposed to save in a great stroke of irony.
However, it is true that Gorbachev did not fully comprehend the significance nor foresee the ultimate
effect of his reforms. An evolutionary leader who saw the pressing flaws of the old system, he
genuinely believed in and pushed for a workable model of socialism based on the Soviet experience
and within the existed framework of the party state. As the reforms went further and deeper, however,

Sir Gawain And The Green Knight Analysis
Sir Gawain and the Green Knight is about the Green Knight coming to a feast at King Arthur s table,
and wanting to challenge the King to a game. The game was a game unlike many others, it was about
beheading. The King accepts the challenge, but while he is holding the axe to swing at the Green
Knight, Sir Gawain steps in, takes the ax and beheads the Green Knight himself.
The Green Knight s bloody head laid on the ground, but to Sir Gawain s shock, the Green Knight
picked up his head and placed it back on his body. He reminded Sir Gawain that he had accepted the
challenge so, Sir Gawain himself had to come find the Green Knight in one year at his chapel, so the
he can then behead Sir Gawain. By accepting this challenge, Sir Gawain shows courage and maturity

Tim Burton s Cinematic Style
Angles, and Lights Oh My!
Edward Scissorhands and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory may seem like very different films. One
being about a man with metal blades for hands, the other about a man who owns a chocolate factory,
but in reality the films share many similarities when it comes to cinematic style, due to the fact Tim
Burton directed both. Tim Burton has an unique style, and the ways he shows this style is not only
through the stories he creates, but also the use of lighting, and camera angles he uses in his films.
Edward Scissorhands and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory both have examples of lighting and
camera angles that create the same desired effect across both films and audiences.
Lighting can be broken down into categories, there is low key lighting, high key lighting and also mid
key lighting. In Edward Scissorhand and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, both use low key lighting
to create the mood of suspense, and intrigue. Low key lighting for this ... Show more content on

The long shot shows the isolation of the character, place or object that is being shown. There is a long
shot in Edward Scissorhands of Edward s castle, this shows how isolated the home is from the rest of
the neighborhood. The same is done in Chocolate Factory, with both the factory and Charlie s home,
all creating that separation allowing the buildings to appear cut off from their surroundings in a way.
The way a director uses his camera angles, and lighting can show his own unique style in his films.
Directors tend to use certain lighting and certain angles for certain things, as evident in comparing
Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and Edward Scissorhands. Tim Burton put his own unique twist on
the films, both are very different movies, but have similarities when it comes to the cinematic

My Goals For Student Council
As a student finishing out middle school and entering high school, I had many ambitions for my future
life. I wanted to become a student leader, and, as I went through my freshman year, I wanted to be
involved in Student Council through the Central Minnesota Association of Student Councils
(CMASC). Despite these ambitions, I had two major hurdles that I had to get over in order to reach
these goals: my shyness and my fear of public speaking. In order to achieve my goals for Student
Council, I would have to campaign, get to know others, and speak in front of a large group of them.
However, these activities fell far outside of my comfort zone, and it would take a lot of work to be
able to do these things. In order to encourage myself to overcome these two fears, I decided that I
would continue to pursue my ambition without even considering that I had my reservations. My
friends in the council ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Although I was wondering whether it would be crazy to run as a sophomore, for the first time, I did
not question my abilities. After some considerable thought and talking with my family, I decided to
chase after this office as well. This time around, I was able to campaign for myself without any fear or
reservation, and successfully delivered my speech to an audience of about 400 delegates.
Although I did not win this election as a sophomore, it put me on track to become President as a junior
and proved that I am capable of overcoming my fears and achieving success. Now, as a senior, I speak
on a regular basis in front of other student councils at conventions across Minnesota and have found it
enjoyable to meet new people and learn more about them. These skills will be very useful when I enter
college as one of many students from across the United States, and will allow me to make connections

How Does Edgar Allan Poe React To The Raven
Colby Austin
Honors English 11
Mr. Smith
Poe Paper
The Raven is a famous poem by Edgar Allan Poe that was first published in January 1845. The poem
is famous for its language and supernatural elements. It narrates the story of a talking raven that visits
a hysterical lover and traces the events that led to is lethargic fall into madness. The narrator is
grieving the loss of his great love Lenore. As the raven sits on a bust of Pallas, it searches deeper and
harder to be able to agitate the narrator with its repetitive use of Nevermore . The Raven utilizes
numerous classical and folk references.
Poe stated that he wrote the poem with logic and careful for planning, wanting to create a poem that
would serve to the interests of both critical ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Poe makes no direct reference tot his fact in the poem, but instead brings it up in The Philosophy of
Composition . The fact that the narrator reads books of lore and has a bust Pallus, the Greek goddess
of wisdom, also feeds into that idea. The narrator amplifies the prescience of devil imagery because he
believes the raven is from the Night s Plutonian shore , or more simply a reference to being a
messenger from Pluto, The Roman god of the underworld.. Poe said the raven is supposed to show
Mournful and Never ending Remembrance . He was also inspired by the raven Grip, in Barnaby
Rudge: A Tale of the Riots of Eighty Charles Dickens. The scene at the end of the fifth chapter of
Dickens s novel is very similar to The Raven. Grip makes a noise and someone says, What was that
him tapping at the door? The response is, Tis someone knocking softly at the shutter. Dickens s grip
had the ability to communicate very and possessed a lot of comedic elements in how he conducted
himself, including the popping of a champagne cork, but Poe focused more the bird s more theatrical
qualities. He wrote a review of Barnaby Rudge for Graham s Magazine stating that, among other
things, the raven should have yielded a more symbolic and prophetic

The Violation Of Human Rights
After reviewing the Human Rights Watch website, www.hrw.org, I decided to write my paper on the
violation of the human rights of people with disabilities. I have a passion for working with people that
have disabilities and I think so much more should be done for them. The United States have made
great strides in being respectful for their human rights and it is time to see the rest of the world step up
and take responsibility. There is also much more needed to be done in the United States but we have
come so far. I decided to use the human rights violation of people with disabilities because I want to
work with them in the future and it is important to know what hardships they face around the world. I
need to help be a voice for them. The first article I read about human rights with people with
disabilities was titled We Need to Stop Treating People with Disabilities as Less Than Human, by
Shantha Rau Barriga. In this article, Barriga traveled the world to speak with disabled people. She saw
a five year old girl dressed in rags and chained to a tree with chains because her family thought she
was possessed. Unfortunately, this happens far too often because people with disabilities are seen as
unhuman. Often times around the world, children with disabilities are put in institutions and
sometimes takes straight from the mothers after birth the relieve them of the burden of a child with
disabilities. However, having some form of disability is not all that rare: one in

He looked up at the wall with a smile to his surprise; it was getting late. It s six pm!
So?
I have to catch up with someone.
Are you cheating on me already?
No, he laughed. Work related.
How about you come work for me as my personal guard? she offered.

Eustace helped his father realize that dream when he moved to Montana.
He remembered the clean environment, trickling streams, proud trees, pristine forests, ferns and heaps
of logs like leaping back in time a period he preferred to live in and made it a lifelong goal to continue
living in. He also remembered taking a ride on a horse drawn carriage with the pioneer of Turtle Island
Preserve himself. When the preserve in North Carolina was closed, there were rumors of another
preserve built by the pioneer and his family farther north. Eustace figured this was it: Turtle Island
Preserve II. It wasn t a rumor after all...
What happened here? Caroline asked.
For us to find out I guess.
They walked back to the main building and then up the front steps. When they pushed the door, it
creaked ajar to the living room that was completely furnished with log tables, chairs, and shelves.
Though dusty from being unkempt, it was impressive. On one end of the room was a fireplace. To
their surprise, it was fired by electric rather than logs which it appeared to give the facade of. He d
seen versions of it in the city, but this was unlike anything he d ever seen. It was ingenious.
The design and raw architecture of the home reflected the intellect of the builder.
Come see! Keira said when she peered out a window. The others came and there two horses grazing
behind the house.

Four Hundred Years Of Silence, The Intertestamental Period
Abstract
The Four Hundred Years of Silence, the Intertestamental Period, is examined to explore the era when
there was no word from God through the arrival of Jesus in the new testament, as well as the Israelites
response to God s silence and historical events during that time period, and the implications for early
Christianity. Israel went into captivity as a result of their practice of disobedience to God but when
they returned they continued to struggle with being obedient; their hearts were far from God. In
response, during a period of 400 hundred years there was no revelatory word from God for the people.
The ongoing practice and spirit of disobedience impacted the genesis of Christianity where the
concepts of salvation through Jesus ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Rwanda Genocide Failures
In three separate instances, thousands of innocent people have lost their lives, due to the inaction of
the United Nations. Three genocides which all could ve been avoided, occurred. The slight attempt the
UN made to each country was of no assistance, and each failure of the UN caused more loss of life.
Though the United Nations is ashamed of their failures, they could ve put more effort in to prevent the
genocides. The heinous acts that occurred in Cambodia, Rwanda, and Sudan were ignored and
interminable by the UN, resulting in the mass destruction of the populations in all three locations.

civilians travelling in a truck, but did not intervene (Darfur Conflict). The UN hasn t acted on the
attacks occurring right in front of them. The civilians of Darfur feel the UN has betrayed them, by

  • 2. Becoming An Ally By White Americans Becoming an Ally When white Americans choose to self educate about systemic racism they can become allies in the fight to dismantle racist structures in our society. Systemic racism is a theory that takes a look at how individual, structural, and institutional forms of racism intersect, overlap, and create a deep rooted form of prejudice and discrimination that advantages a cultural group at the expense of others in all institutions of a society economics, political representation, the criminal justice system, employment, and many others. (Luther College 2015). This includes discrimination affecting credit, schooling, justice, residential location, etc. It can be eradicated in the next century, but not without white people acknowledging that it is a real issue that cost lives. It is not the duty of the oppressed to make a liberty sales pitch to their oppressors. However, it is the responsibility of those benefiting from the oppression of others to become educated, listen, and use their privilege to combat injustice. Asian, Latino, Black, and First Nations people respectively do not experience white supremacy in the same ways. Throughout this essay I will focus on the systemic racism targeted at Black people, using the term People of Color , coined by Black Feminists in the 1970s, abbreviated to PoC, to refer to them. The first step to becoming an ally to People of Color is to become educated about the issue to understand that racism did not disappear with the Civil ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Sustainable Agriculture Is Not Good For The Environment Sustainable agriculture means to manage farms in a way that does not exploit and deplete the natural resources. Sustainable agriculture is when farmers adapt practices that enrich the soil, protect the waterways, and enable biodiversity. One best practice that supports sustainable agriculture is crop rotation. Crop rotation is not new; I remember learning about this in the third grade. Soil needs time to rest, but an open field with exposed soil is not good for the environment. Planting cover crops during this resting period keeps the soil in tact and possible pesticides from running off and causing damage to our waterways. When we explore natural fields and forests, we find a variety of plants. This is not by chance; nature has a way of protecting the environment and embracing diversity. Farmers are realizing agriculture sustainability when they learn from nature and intersperse their crops. Mixing crops provide natural pesticides, protect the soil, and promotes biodiversity. Instead of acres and acres of the same plant, farmers are learning that mixing up the crops can help enrich the soil and positively effects to the environment. Farmers are also integrating farm animal production with their fields. When properly balanced, cattle can graze fields that are resting. Cover crops such as clover protect the soil and are very healthy for cattle. Nutrients are returned back to the soil in the form of mature, it is a natural cycle, and when managed, has positive ... Human Nature, Law, And English Boys Sam Anderson Ms.Ruiz Honors World Literature 0 Period 6 October 2017 Human Nature, Law, and English Boys Humans created moral law to govern themselves, and be able to exist in civilized society, but people are arrogant and break these rules in order to gain control and power over others. Lord of the Flies, a novel by William Golding, describes, using Hobbes theory of human nature needing laws in order to stay civilized, a group of boys attempting to create a society. Lord of the Flies is a story of a group of boys who crash landed on an island and are trying to create a functioning society with a government. Hobbes theory of human nature says that human societies need laws in order to stay civilized and not fall into savagery. The ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... From the very beginning the boys listen to Ralph s suggestions. The group has heard suggestions from Piggy, Jack and Ralph but have only listened to the boy with the, size, and attractive appearance, which shows their low standards for leaders. The boys base their decisions on the aesthetic appeal of Ralph instead of his capability of leadership. The most powerful thing affecting the decision was the conch, a major symbol of power and control. The conch is something that summons and silences the boys, and allows them to speak during meetings. Hobbes theory says that human nature is basically selfish and therefore they follow the leader who is most likely to give them what they want. Ralph demonstrates what the boys want in that he calls for a vote, giving all they boys control over their society. The boys are interested by Ralph which causes them to want to keep him around as something to marvel at so they make him the leader. Toward the end of the novel, Piggy criticizes the behavior of the boys in Jack s society which causes them to become very angry. Roger, on the cliff above them, uses the lever to push a boulder aimed at Piggy. Golding wrote, ... the conch exploded into a thousand white fragments and ceased to exist. • 5. Western Influence On John Hersey s Characters Japanese has an immense effect on those in contact with it. Japanese is a culture with divine beliefs and enormous pride in their culture. John Hersey explores the effects that culture and environment have on an individual s views and beliefs; a stereotypical Japanese man , an Americanized Japanese priest, and a widowed Japanese woman all react similarly to the bombing of Hiroshima. The influence of Japanese culture has an astounding impact on the reactions of Hersey s characters. Japan is a country of many cultures. Japan s most renowned is the art of the samurai and currently, urbanization. Due to the American occupation in the pacific, Japanese moved from a cultural masterpiece, to an eastern constitutional monarchy. Which is generally effected by a western influence. The effect of Japanese culture on Dr. Sasaki is an example of home pride and cultural pride. Dr.Sasaki has been surrounded by Japanese culture all his life and he in turn represents stereotypical Japanese culture. Dr. Sasaki most closely represents stereotypical Japanese culture. • 6. Patriot Missile Crisis Intro Ballistic missile defense became a necessity after World War II when Germany developed and launched several missiles at targets around Europe. During the Cold War, the United States and Russia began developing technologies to build and use long range missiles at a moment s notice. Before the Gulf War and Desert Storm there were no systems to defend against theater ballistic missiles or TBM s. The Patriot missile system had been developed in the 1970 s to counter threats from enemy aircrafts. Shortly before the Gulf War, testing and production of the first PAC1 missiles had begun to be used against Short range missiles. The use of the Patriot system had a huge impact to the success of the Gulf War and Desert Storm by defending US and coalition assets in Saudi Arabia and Israel from Scud Missile attacks by Iraqi Forces. • 8. The Celts And The Celtic World Knowledge of the Celts and the Celtic world has been acquired and accumulated through a variety of mediums such as archaeological evidence, geographical markings and most importantly, the testimonies left by Greek and Roman writers. Without these writings, developing an image of the nature of the Celts would be extremely difficult. Comparing two authors, Roman emperor, Julius Caesar to Greek writer, Athenaeus, it may reveal some of the prejudices and biased views held against the Celts, but more importantly by contrasting the views of these particular authors, it also offers a well rounded account of the history and culture of these Celtic speaking people. Athenaeus was a Greek writer, who wrote around the time of 200AD. He is the author of Deipnosophistae, a piece of literature all about eating and dining traditions. Athenaeus is writing during a time known as The Poseidonian Tradition; Poseidonios inspired a lot of Greek writers to write and keep record of the Celts and their culture. Athenaeus quotes Poseidonios in his Deipnosophistae as he has first hand experience of the Celts, having travelled around studying the Celts. Poseidonios work only survives through the work of later authors, such as Athenaeus. Athenaeus speaks of how Poseidonios observed the Celts during a feast, taking note of their customs, Athenaeus discourse is written in such a way that the impression left is that the Greeks may have considered themselves more evolved than the Celts they were ... In the first lines of the story, the speaker talks directly to the reader where he tries to convince the reader that he is not insane. However, we discover that he is mentally ill as we read more of the story. The character speaks against his purpose of pleading as mentally healthy. Ironically, his own speech convicts him. Therefore, it can be concluded that the narrator is on a mind battle with his own conscience. The narrator s background is a mystery to the reader but his characteristics were evidently presented on his way of narration. All the obsessive details and the whole elaborate plan the man narrated was enough evidence to confirm the reader that he is truly out of his mind. The narrator is obsessive, paranoid, and insane and these characteristics are the problems which led to the conflict. His too much thinking attitude was his own protagonist in the story. This story entitled Tell Tale Heart is not only about the beating heart which led the main character to reveal his own doing but the heart also pertains to what is missing from him, a heart. The mouthwash market can be segmented into three groups, based on the frequency of use: 1. heavy users: use the product once per day or more and constitute 40% of the market; heavy users most likely want the basic features of a mouthwash that allow for their basic oral hygiene; their knowledge of the product is not necessarily extensive, but since they use the product so frequently they want the most benefit for the amount that they are spending on the product and price is probably an important consideration in their purchasing decision. 2. medium users: use the product 2 6 times a week and represent 45% of the market; similar to the heavy users, the medium users use the product consistently and are seeking the basic benefits of a mouthwash as a part of their hygiene habits; they are concerned with the price of the product since they buy it relatively frequently, and will most likely purchase a product that provides the most value for their money. 3. light users: use the product less than 1 time a week and make up only 15% of the market; these users make up a comparatively small segment of the market and do not buy or use the product as frequently as the other segments; ... Everyone would get along with each other, everyone would be compassionate and helpful to everyone in the community, and most of all, they would be a society based on relations and not God. Winthrop realizes the various social classes people fit into, but he hopes that his city upon a hill will unite everyone and make them all equal, regardless of social status. He hopes that the people who are in the colony are good people, who will help anyone who needs it, when they need it. Last of all, he hopes that the colony will keep the unity of the spirit in the bond of peace in order to become the city upon a hill that he wants to be. In order to do this, God ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Document D follows a small section of Anne Hutchinson s trial where Winthrop himself is, essentially, arguing with someone about a rumored rule breaking. This goes against his vision of complete peace with others within the colony. This excerpt shows that the community would accept everyone, but in the case of Hutchinson, they are pushing her away and trying to kick her out of the colony because she is supposedly pushing her limits of freedom. This goes to show that even the person who has the vision of the society will still push people around because they don t follow the exact rules of freedom that are put into place. The fact that someone is still praying to God, and that even the person who s vision it was to be a city upon a hill is going against his vision shows that the colony is still far from achieving Winthrop s vision. The two documents are useful in the sense that they delve further into a specific part of the society. The poem by Anne Bradstreet is vague because it doesn t really talk much about the society as a whole, but of her own relation in the society. The excerpt between Hutchinson and Winthrop shows the court written exchange, and could help prove that the society isn t the exact vision of the society because Winthrop is clearly challenging Hutchinson s ... Honor Codes In Tobias Wolff s Old School The existence of honor codes has had basis in helping students learn since their inception, but there are still those who object to their very definition. Nearly every institution centered around the education of children has some sort of code of conduct or set of rules in place for the betterment of the students. However, the term honor in the title honor code is what people can occasionally take issue with, as the term often implies a much more respectful idea. This issue leads one to question the purpose of honor codes. Although honor codes, like that of the school in Tobias Wolff s Old School, exist for the purpose of bettering the students by ensuring that they all have an equal chance and that they all do their own work, Mr. Ramsey objects to his school s honor code because he believes in a much more personal and valuable meaning of the word honor . Honor codes and codes of conduct have existed for about as long as systems of institutionalized education have, as they exist for the betterment of the students. Honor codes often consist of a set of enumerated standards that the aforementioned institution holds its students to. Without them, students cheating would go unregulated, which would overall just harm themselves, since it would be detrimental to their learning experience. The use of outside advantage to garner better grades would make it harder for the students to gain the help that they need, as well as allowing students to proceed without actually ... The vector control algorithm is calculated on Motorola DSP56F80X. The block diagram is shown in figure which describes the structure of implement vector control algorithm. The result obtained is verified using matlab simulation. Initially speed reference is set at120 radian/s and torque taken as 0 nm. Then motor is run, speed, torque and current wave form is taken. Now speed reference changes to 160 radian/s and torque changes to 200nm and correspondence wave form is shown. I observed that it run smoothly over the full speed range, generate full torque at zero speed, and have high dynamic performance including fast acceleration and deceleration. It was originally developed for high performance motor application for industrial drives. However, it is becoming increasingly attractive for lower performance applications as well due to FOC s motor size, cost and power consumption reduction superiority. .. • 21. Baroque Art And Art The Rococo era was an imaginatively experimental and colorful period of time in France in which highly ornamented fashion and décor were at the forefront of fashion. The Rococo movement was already vaguely invented during the Late Baroque era in Italy, but after gaining some headway, it was then pushed by King Louis XV of France who was very interested in showcasing luxury, wealth, and good taste of that time through art and fashion. By the mid 1700 s, the majority of France was sick of the dull, looming, and dark aesthetic of the Baroque era. Once the Rococo era came about, home décor and fashion consisted of much more brightly decorated, overwhelming colors and opulent designs and textures. The concept of the Rococo was that more is better in terms of garments and fabrics, furniture, and other leisurely activities and decor. Just as the Siamese delegation had a lasting effect on the court of Louis XIV, so did the visit of an ambassadorial retinue led by Mehmed Efendi in 1720 1721, stamping the court with all kinds of turquerie, enmeshing itself more freely with the lachinage of the former century (remembering also that chinoiserie was very much alive and a central element to the germination of the rococo), (Fashion and Orientalism, page 63). Another factor that played into the Rococo was the fact that women had a bit more authority in the sense that they were allowed to hold positions of power. The first pinball machines were invented during this time and are still around with us today in arcades and bars around the world.
