This sport is said to have had uncertain origins but was recorded as having been
practised in ancient Egypt, Greece and China, where it was held in legend that the Sun
and Moon played X over the light and darkness. Archaeological evidence shows that X
was also popular in India in the 12th century in the area what is today the State of
Orissa on the east coast. The famous Sun Temple of Konark has a stone relief on the
west wing of the structure clearly showing the game of X in progress.
X was contested as a team event in the Summer Olympics every year from 1900 to
