1. Assure Assignment
1. Teaching the months of the year to 1st grade, Special Education.
Analyze Learners
The students are in the first grade, Special education class, and are most likely around the
ages of six and seven. There are 10 boys and seven girls. The majority of the class is white and
20% are African American and 10% Hispanic. Seven of those students have ADHD. Knowing
this information, the lesson will have to be highly engaging and interactive in multiple ways.
State Objectives
The students in my first grade class will be able to identify the months of the year in the
order in which they appear on the calendar and by seasons. The students will describe each
month by the holidays and activities that the students can do in the month and categorize the
months by the season in which they occur. By the end of 5 days, the students will have a 90%
degree of accuracy of the months of the year.
Select Methods, Media, and Material
I will select material such as an interactive internet website
(http://www.turtlediary.com/kindergarten-games/math-games/months-of-the-year.html), four
trifold poster boards, and pictures.
Utilize Material and Media
I reviewed the internet material and set up four stations, made out of trifold poster board,
according to season. The stations have the season labeled with pictures represented of the season,
along with months on each section of the board. Each month section of the station has pictures of
activities and holidays that occur in each month. I will also have other pictures which I will use
in the lesson that the students will use to help identify the months.
2. Require Learner Participation
I will first use the interactive website to teach the months of the year. I will then take the
students to each station and let them look at what represents the months with pictures of
activities and holidays that take place in each month. I will ask the students what they like to do
in each month or even let them act an activity such as swimming or throwing snowballs. After,
the students will then be put to the test. Each will have pictures and they will move around the
stations and place their pictures that relate to each month. The students will then pick a favorite
month and complete a worksheet about why they like the month, what takes place in the month,
and what season it is in. Then the students will tell me when their birthday is and they will
attempt to arrange themselves in the correct order.
Evaluate and Revise
I expect I will have to revise the lesson. I may have to break up the website lesson and go
to stations after each mini lesson if I cannot keep the attention of the students.
