This document outlines a lesson plan to teach 8th grade students about the five elements of a short story. There are 25 students in the class from diverse racial backgrounds, with varying learning abilities. The lesson will use videos, websites accessed via QR codes, and Twitter to engage visual and tactile learners. Students will define and give examples of each element, then demonstrate their understanding by responding to a tweet asking for an example of one element. Participation and identification of the elements will evaluate learning. The lesson may extend as homework if needed.
1. Monday Assure Method
5 Elements of a Short Story
Analyze learners:
There are 25 students in my 8th
grade English classroom made up of 14 girls and 11 boys.
The races are white, African American, Asian, and Latino. 50% of the students are average
learners, 20% are below average, and 30% are above average. The majority of the students are
visual and tactile learners.
Main Objectives:
The 8th
grade students will learn about the elements of a short story by understanding and
identifying, defining, and giving an example of the 5 elements of a short story. After watching a
video, accessing the web, students will perform their knowledge of the 5 elements of a short
story but using twitter to show comprehension. Students will have a 95% understanding of each
element by the end of the class period.
Methods, Media, and Material:
We will use a poster, QR, Pinterest, YouTube, Voki, and Twitter during the lesson.
Utilize Media and Materials:
When the students walk in the classroom I will have a poster hung on the wall beside the
smartboard. Once the students are seated, I will play the voki. At this point the student will know
what we are covering that day. We will access the QR and Pinterest and discuss what the 5
elements of a short story are and how they are used in a story. Then we will watch a YouTube
video. After the video, the students will get on Twitter and answer or tweet at my tweet “What is
one element of a short story and what is an example of it?”
Require Learner Participation:
The students observe the poster and listen to the voki at the beginning of class. Then they
were use their smartphones and access the QR codes that will be placed at the front of the room.
They will take snapshots of the website from the QR code so they will have it when they leave
the classroom. I will go over the lesson of the 5 elements and they will listen and take notes for
further learning. After the discussion, I will show the students my Pinterest board where they is a
5 elements of a short story pin. They will find that pin on their own Pinterest and pin it to refer to
later when they write their own short story. We will watch a YouTube video, which I share on
Twitter. Once the lesson is over, as an exit slip activity, the students will access Twitter and
tweet at my tweet with the hashtag #exitslip
2. Evaluate and Revise:
The students will be assessed by participation and being able to identify, define, and give
an example of the 5 elements of a short story. If I do not have time to finish the lesson, then the
students will use Twitter after class as homework to answer the exit slip question.
