ASSURE Method
A- Analyze your learners.
Teaching the months of the year to a 1st grade class, Special Ed, 10 boys, 7 girls, 70% 20%
African-American and 10% Hispanic.7 students in the class have mild to severe ADHD
(attention deficit hyperactivity disorder).
S- State objectives.
My 1st grade class will say the names of the 12 months of the year, arrange them in order, and
give at least one important day or holiday in each month. They will have one to two weeks of
learning the months and important day or holiday through songs, interactive calendar, and
notecards divided into the four different seasons and the months within each season. Students
will have learned the months and recite them in order, and then tell me one important day or
holiday in each month with 100% accuracy by the end of the two weeks of practicing the
material.
S- Select Methods, Media, and Materials.
1. Calendars
2. List of the names of the 12 months on notecards.
3. Notecards with the four seasons and the months within each season
5. PowerPoint
7. Poster
8. YouTube
9. Smart Board
2. 10. WebQuest
U- Utilize Media and Materials
1. Preview the material. Make sure all the names of the months are spelled right on the list, note
cards, and presentation. Make sure WebQuest is well explained. Make sure SmartBoard activity
is ready and correct.
2. Prepare the environment. Give all the kids their own calendar and list and hang up posters.
3. Prepare the learners. Explain and show them each of the items. Explain what I expect out of
the learners but the end of the two weeks.
R- Require Learners Participation.
I plan to keep learner’s attention by providing many different activities to keep the class fun and
interesting. Will have a song off YouTube to help students try and remember the name and order
of the months. I will have pictures of the different season to help them with the notecards that
have the four different seasons on them. I will let the kids quiz each other and work in groups
with their note cards trying to put them in order and learn the four different season and which
months are in each season. Also have WebQuest the students can do to help practice their
months and important days/holidays
E- Evaluate and Revise.
I will grade the students on how they are doing throughout the week or weeks, just to see how
much progress each one is showing. If I have some falling behind or excelling, I will group the
ones falling behind together and the ones excelling together, and give extra attention to the ones
falling behind or I may let those whom are excelling help those falling behind. Then have each
individual child at the end of the two weeks come up and recite the names of month in order to
me and then have them tell me an important day or holiday for each month.
