Writing Short Stories
Analyze learners:
There are 25 students in my 8th
grade English classroom made up of 14 girls and 11 boys.
The races are white, African America, Asian, and Latino. 50% of the students are average
learners, 20% are below average, and 30% are above average. The majority of the students are
visual and tactile learners
Main Objectives:
Student will identify the 5 elements of a short story and produce their own fictional short
story using those elements. Students will watch video for understanding and then complete a
WebQuest for comprehension and production for writing a short story. The students will have a
90% understanding of how to write a short story using the 5 elements to help them produce it and
publish it within a one day class period
Methods, Media, and Material:
Digital image, YouTube, Blog, WebQuest will be used to teach the students how to write
a short story.
Utilize Media and Materials:
Students will be presented with a poster at the beginning of class about the lesson they
will be learning for the day. The students will view a YouTube video reviewing what the 5
elements of a short story are and then the students will complete a WebQuest in order to write
the short story. After they write the short story, the students will publish their story on the class
blog, where they will read peer’s blogs and comment on them.
Require Learner Participation:
The students will be active in completing a WebQuest about writing a short story. They
will also publish their work and comment on their classmate’s blog post. This lesson requires
participation in order to be assessed.
Evaluate and revise:
The students will be assessed by the completion and accuracy of the WebQuest and
posting and commenting on the class blog. The students will be evaluated on if all elements are
present in the blog. The evaluation will not only be done by me but the classmates will be
evaluating one another as well.
