This document outlines a lesson plan to teach 1st grade students the months of the year. The class has 17 students, most of whom are white with some African American and Hispanic students. Seven students have ADHD. The objective is for students to recite and order the months with 100% accuracy by the end of the month. The teacher will use hands-on activities, songs, puzzles and games to engage students. YouTube, PowerPoint, a web quest and blog will supplement instruction. Students will create months, play trivia games and work together to order months. Participation in games and groups will evaluate understanding. Progress will be evaluated through recitation and making a calendar to assess understanding and determine if revisions are needed.

1. Assure Assignment
A- Analyze Learners
Teaching the months of the year to a 1stgrade class, Special ed, 10 boys, 7 girls, 70% white
20% African-American and 10% Hispanic.7 students in the class have mild to severe ADHD
(attention deficit hyperactivity disorder).
S- State Objectives
The students will be learn recite and put in order all the months of the year through pictures,
songs, and puzzles, by the end of the month with 100% accuracy.
S- Select Methods, Media, and Materials
Method – Hands on activities, with much movement so student’s minds are occupied. Trivia
games and sing-a-longs.
Media – Using YouTube I will search for sing a long songs to keep the memory fresh. I will also use
PowerPoint to present a quick presentation going over brief points to learn all the months of the
year. I will search, or create a web quest designed to help students learn the months of the year. I
will focus on the web quest being more interactive, and not reading. Lastly I will use a blog.
U- Utilize Methods, Media, and Materials
I will use the computer to find catchy songs or rhymes that will be easy to remember to expose
the children to learning the months of a year. After being exposed, the children will make separate
months on pieces of paper. By having children work together to figure out the order of the months it
will help communication skills, character building and even knowledge about the months of the
year. Another activity I think will be effect will be a trivia game, question ranging from what months
have the most to least days, what are the seasons in the month and so on. Each time will receive
points that will go to any assignment they choose.
Using web quest, will help me as I can see how other educators taught their students how to learn
the months of the year.
Also I will use a blog, to read other opinions on the best strategies when it comes to teaching kids
the months of the year with accuracy.
R- Require Learner Participation
The trivia game and group work will require the most participation. It will show who is getting
the material and who isn’t. That will also let me know what I will need to change in order to
accommodate them correctly.
2. E- Evaluate and Revise
Students will be evaluated by saying all the months in order, then putting the months in order
with their hands to make a complete 12 month calendar. Also during trivia and group activities;
seeing how the children work together I can access their knowledge and see if there are any mental
blocks or breaks going on. That should be enough information, and if I recognize any slower progress
I can create new strategies to help the student excel.
