ASSURE Method Assignment (#1)
Before I begin to teach my lesson, I should have my students already analyzed. There are
three traits worth analyzing: general characteristics, learning styles, and specific entry
competencies. My first grade students are around 6 to 7 years old, with just a few more boys than
girls. 70% of my class is white, 20% is African-American, and 10% is Latino— so I must be
aware of differentiated culture specifics. Each child will have very different learning styles,
mainly because they each have one or more disabilities. 7 out of 17 of my students have ADHD
so I must use activities that will keep his/her attention. Making assumptions of my students is not
acceptable and he/she should be motivated to learn.
My stated objective for “Months of the Year” is: My students will be able to recite the
months of the year in correct order within one month with 90% accuracy. We will learn three
months in each week— adding up to all 12 months in 4 weeks. I will do this by holding up a
poster with every single month on it every day of the week. With each month, I will focus on the
specific things that are very popular and unique about that month. For example, if we are
focusing on the month of December, I would show pictures of red and green presents, Santa
Claus, and Christmas trees. My goal is to show the students that these pictures represent certain
months. Drawing pictures and making crafts will be a great help also in order to learn each
month.
My select methods, media, and materials will be very simple. I will use worksheets for
each month of the year. There will be the same pictures on each worksheet that I will use when
representing each month to the students. Doing so, my students will be able to learn each month
by just seeing the specific pictures. Visually, this will be very helpful for my ADHD students.
Also, I will use an over-head projector in order to show each month’s name. I will incorporate
numbers also, that way if the pictures do not work as well, then the month’s number may help.
In order to utilize the media and materials, before each class, I will preview my materials
for the day so that later when I start to teach, I can feel ready. The materials will be prepared for
each student and I may have a few extra copies as well. The projector will be prepared for use as
well and if it is not ready before class, I will see that it is fixed. My students will be prepared for
the day as I tell them exactly what we will be going over. In this instance, on each new month
day, I will ask the children if they know anything about that specific month. This question will
get the students talking about the month and will help get them motivated.
I can require learner participation by asking the students follow-up questions at the end of
the day. Once the month lesson is given, I can ask questions like, “What did you learn about this
month?” and “What are some things that represent this month?” I can also ask, “Can you tell me
the months we have learned so far in order?” Once this question is being asked every single day,
the students should be able to memorize the months in correct order.
Each individual student will be evaluated mainly through my own mental notes.
Observing these children will show me just exactly what he/she knows and what he/she needs to
work on. Before, during, and after discussion, each student will be evaluated thoroughly and very
often. This not only helps my mentality, but also theirs, so they can see where they are in their
studies and goals.
