This document outlines an ASSURE lesson plan to teach 1st grade students the months of the year. The class has 17 students from various racial backgrounds, and 7 have ADHD. The objectives are for students to recite the months in order and create their own calendars. A variety of methods, media, and materials will be used, including pictures, videos, and hands-on activities with supplies to make calendars. Students will be actively engaged through group games to reinforce learning. Effectiveness will be evaluated after to determine if objectives were met and how the lesson can be improved.

ASSURE Method Assignment
1/ 23/15
1-Teaching the months of the year to a 1st grade class, Special ed, 10 boys, 7 girls, 70%
white 20% African-American and 10% Hispanic.7 students in the class have mild to
severe ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder).
This assignment will be turned in using livetext as explained in class. Where you will
receive a grade.
A- Analyzing the Learners. In this class there are 17 students where there are 7 girls and
10 boys. These students’ age range from 7 to 8 years of age. They are in the 1st
Grade. There are three basic cultures that the 17 students come from which are 70%
white, 20% African American, and 10% Hispanic and with there being 17 students
the percentages suggest there are a few of these students in which share multiple
cultures. 7 of the 17 students have ADHD so consideration of keeping them
entertained and allowing them to get up and move around will be taken into
consideration. Before beginning to teach these students the months of the year I
would speak to every one of them because they are in my class and hope to have
come to know them. Some prerequisites that I would set for them would be to know
how to write and read on the 1st grade level. I would make sure the kids would be
motivated for this assignment by 1st going over holidays that they obviously look
forward to living in the United States like Thanksgiving, Christmas, Hanukkah,
Kwanza, etc. I would also go over the physiological factors as well. I would make
sure through observing them that every child is in good health and is not feeling
under the weather. I would make sure that they were not hunger by possibly bring a
healthy snack for before we get started on the project. I would also make sure that the
classroom was set to a comfortable temperature.
S- Stating Objectives. The Students will be able to recite the months of the year in
chronological order by creating their own take home calendar after the project is over.
The students will be actively participating by being able to get up and standing next to the
tables that they are working at. The students will develop the skills necessary to be able
to enumerate on the month of the year. The students will make their own calendar that is
the same size as a standard calendar that is to be hung on a wall and flips from month to
month as has a picture they have drawn that depicts things that they relate to the month
after we talk about the month. Students will be able to have a standard calendar that they
will be able to look at while making their own. The time frame for the students being
able to recite the months of the year in Chronological order will be after two weeks of the
project with a 95% accuracy rate which enables them to start over only once if needed.
S-Selecting the 3 M’s. For choosing a method of learning I would talk to the students and
have a good idea of how each one learns. I would be able to come up with a method that
suites them the best whether it is seeing pictures of other calendars or writing down the
months themselves. The media that I would use would be based on the students learning
2. styles but I feel that computer images and multimedia, still images, and flip cards would
able be needed in the activity. I would be able to come up with the materials fairly easy
because we would be using construction paper, pens, pencils, markers, colored pencils,
glue, scissors, tape, and a ruler which are all things that are either required of the students
to have or can be obtained by school funds in most schools. All of these pieces in the
section could all be run across other teachers at the school that I am at to make sure that I
am going to be able to do all that I say and I also could get other ideas from them to make
the activity run more smoothly.
U- Utilize Material and Media. In this activity the media will be teacher centered because
I will be going over the PowerPoint but the material will all be student centered because
they will be able to use all the material that is available. Before any of the activities are
started I would go over my material by myself maybe in the classroom as if the students
are present so that I get a feel for where the students will be in the classroom during the
activity. I will make sure to have all the material that is needed so the activity doesn’t
have to be postponed and I would give an introduction to the students with a slide show
PowerPoint of when and why a calendar is necessary.
R- Require Learner Participation. The students will be required to have active mental
engagement and the activity of making the calendar will allow them to practice writing
and saying the names of the months in order. They will be able to receive feedback from
this because once the calendar is made they can go over it and quiz themselves by
flipping through the calendar and making sure they say the correct month in
chronological order. They also will be split up into groups so that they can play games
including guess who using the months. The game requires the each student to take a note
card from the stack of 12 cards each one being a different month. The student can’t look
at the card that they have and they will place it on their forehead using tape outwards so
that all the students playing the game can see what month they have. The students will
take turns asking the other questions that are answered with either “yes” or “no” to try
and figure out which month that they have. For Example of a question that a student may
ask the others “Does my month have Valentines Day in it.”
E- Evaluate and Revise. After the activity is over I will go back over all the aspects of the
activity and make note to what worked and went well and the things that didn’t work. I
will access the overall effectiveness of the activity. I will note if the students met the
objectives and the effectiveness of the methods and material.
