1. Lesson Plan for Week 9/8 – 9/12
Teaching the months of the year to a 1st grade class, Special Education, 10 boys, 7 girls, 70%
white 20% African-American and 10% Hispanic.7 students in the class have mild to severe
ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder)
A- Analyze learners
S- State objectives
S- Select methods, media, and materials
U- Utilize media and materials
R- Require learner participation
E- Evaluate and revise
Monday – Students will learn about the 12 months of the year by the end of the week with at
least 80 percent accuracy through the use of technology, songs, group work, work sheets, oral
quizzes, and kinesthetic activities. They will first be asked what they know about it and if they
can even name them orally. Once they have been analyzed, they will watch a slide show
representing all of the months of the year. At the end of the slide show is a sing-along which
every student will engage in. Since some kids have ADHD, kinesthetic learning techniques allow
them to engage in the activity whilst learning. There will be a homework assignment where they
must tell someone in their household at least four of the months and they will sign off on them
doing so just to show if they have taken in any information; it will not be a grade.
Tuesday – Students will listen to the same song as repetition is one of the keys to learning a
topic. The next thing students will do is take a walk outside, another activity that allows students
to learn without just sitting in a boring classroom. I will ask them questions like, “How is the
weather today?” and “If leaves are starting to fall off the trees, what does that most likely mean?”
or, “If it’s snowing outside, what month could that be?” Students will be able to answer those
questions easily seeing as they are simple questions and often is a part of prior knowledge. Once
back inside, students will get into groups and try to put the months in chronological order using
laminated cards. Students will do this with at least 60 percent accuracy.
Wednesday – After evaluating whether students could put the months in order from yesterday,
they will do that same activity today. After that, another activity will be done where I have bag
and a student will come up and pull out an object, rotating other students, allowing those with
ADHD to be focused on the activity more so. Students will identify the object and say a month
that the object could most likely be found in. Recognizing certain things such as traditions and
holidays will help with associating the months and ultimately they will learn them. The twelve
items are a Happy New Year tiara, a heart-shaped cut-out, a St. Patrick’s Day shirt, an Easter
egg, a picture of rain, a picture of flowers, a sun, a bathing suit, a backpack, an orange leaf, a
pumpkin, a turkey, and a Christmas tree card. After that activity, they will work with technology.
They will present a group project they have been working on through the use of a simple Prezi I
have helped them with. The use of visual aids allows students to learn more efficiently. They will
have a homework assignment that tells them to write the months in chronological order based on
their activities in class.
2. Thursday – Students will take an evaluation test to see if they have made progress over the days.
We will go over the test out loud afterwards. The students will be asked to write down the twelve
months in chronological order, 4 holidays associated with four months of their choice, and the
weather that usually occurs during the various months. After being evaluated with an 80 percent
accuracy, they will sing and dance to the first sing-along on day 1. After that students will be
assisted with a simple craft that shows each month written in chronological order in a circle with
stickers on each month to help identify them. Once that craft is completed, they will, in groups,
complete a WebQuest I made for them specifically about the months and information regarding
them.
Friday – Over the course of the week they have all participated in their groups and have had the
three methods of teaching at their disposal. Each student through the use of worksheets, a craft,
an outside walk, a sing-along, and other work have learned the months based on their evaluation
from the previous day. The activity students will do today is to read a short story, in groups,
about the twelve months. Then each student with another worksheet will be asked to write each
month down next to a picture that displays which month it is. There have been multiple
worksheets because students need practice writing down words and repetition, as mentioned
previously, is a great way for students to absorb information. After doing that, they will each get
a prize for their hard work over the week and it will have some form of all of the months on it. In
their goody bags there will be a pen, stickers, and two fruit snacks that have them listed on there.
