ASSURE method
Scenario: Teaching the months of the year to a 1st grade class, Special ed, 10 boys,
7 girls, 70% white 20% African-American and 10% Hispanic.7 students in the
class have mild to severe ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder).
A- The learners are students in a first grade special education class. There are
10 boys, 7 girls, 70% white, 20% African-American, and 10% Hispanic.
Also, 7 of the students have mild to severe ADHD.
S- The students are going to memorize the months of the year in a month using
a matching game and activities with 90% accuracy.
S- The students will need poster board and markers for their activity. I will
provide the matching activity.
U- First, I will divide the students into 4 groups. I will separate the students
with ADHD into different groups. Each group will get 3 months (Winter,
Spring, Summer, Winter). They will make a poster showing the things that
relate to the months, such as activities they do in those months or holidays that
occur. They will then present them to the class. Each 3 months will take a week
to master.
R- After each group presents their months to the class, the other students can
give feedback and talk about things they like to do in those months in addition
to the activities already talked about. By having a discussion it will help the
ADHD students interact so they can learn as well.
E- To make sure that the students know the months of the year, I will make a
matching activity. I will put the names of the months on individual laminated
index cards and I will make different cards with activities or holidays from each
month. The students will have to match the months with the activity/holiday
with 90% accuracy.
