• A system that can continuously monitor
the health condition of the people and
share information with remote care
providers or hospitals will be in great
demand.
• As an effort of catching up with this
trend, wireless body area network
(WBAN) has been emerged.

Pulse Oximetry:
It is a medical device that indirectly
measures the oxygen saturation levels in an
individual’s blood as well as the changes in
blood volume.
Electrocardiography:
The ECG waveform provides a non-
invasive means for investigating heart
function. ECG measurements using wireless
sensors are generally for ambulatory
applications.

Blood Pressure:
Measures the blood pressure of a person.

Glucose Monitoring:
Continuous monitoring was enabled by
placing an implantable sensor covered with a
multilayered membrane in the subcutaneous
tissue of the abdomen.
Implantable Neural Stimulators:
Implantable neural stimulators send electrical
impulses into the brain or spinal cord for the
treatment of Parkinson’s disease, intractable
epilepsy and chronic pain.

• WBANs must sense, process and
communicate data in a power efficient
manner.
• The majority of work in this area has been
on developing energy-efficient medium
access control (MAC) protocols.
• The protocol uses a strategy for data
routing between the sensor and the
gateway and a time division multiple
access (TDMA)-based MAC protocol.

Contention-based MAC protocols:
such as carrier sense multiple access/collision
avoidance(CSMA/CA).
Schedule-based MAC protocols:
such as TDMA, , access to the channel is
divided into time slots that are of fixed or
variable duration.
There are two main schemes used for
MAC protocols of sensor networks.

Bluetooth :
Bluetooth is a widely used
communication protocol for topologies
with master-slave architecture in
WBANs.
ZigBee:
Zigbee is used primarily in a star
topology of nodes, provides lower power
consumption, lower data rates and
longer battery life than Bluetooth.

•Signal & Path Performance
One might expect, the signal and path loss
inside the human body is drastically different
than the rules in plain space.
•Usability
Zheng's group classified this as usability
flaw, as the usefulness of emergency
detection sensors is in their detection of
emergencies that are not planned.

A WBAN is expected to be a very useful
technology with potential to offer a
wide range of benefits to patients and
early detection of possible problems.
Step by step, the evolutions will bring
us closer to a fully operational WBAN
that acts as an enabler for improving
the Quality of Life.

  • 2. • A system that can continuously monitor the health condition of the people and share information with remote care providers or hospitals will be in great demand. • As an effort of catching up with this trend, wireless body area network (WBAN) has been emerged. 2

  • 5. Pulse Oximetry: It is a medical device that indirectly measures the oxygen saturation levels in an individual’s blood as well as the changes in blood volume. Electrocardiography: The ECG waveform provides a non- invasive means for investigating heart function. ECG measurements using wireless sensors are generally for ambulatory applications. 5
  • 6. Blood Pressure: Measures the blood pressure of a person. 6
  • 7. Glucose Monitoring: Continuous monitoring was enabled by placing an implantable sensor covered with a multilayered membrane in the subcutaneous tissue of the abdomen. Implantable Neural Stimulators: Implantable neural stimulators send electrical impulses into the brain or spinal cord for the treatment of Parkinson’s disease, intractable epilepsy and chronic pain. 7
  • 8. • WBANs must sense, process and communicate data in a power efficient manner. • The majority of work in this area has been on developing energy-efficient medium access control (MAC) protocols. • The protocol uses a strategy for data routing between the sensor and the gateway and a time division multiple access (TDMA)-based MAC protocol. 8
  • 9. Contention-based MAC protocols: such as carrier sense multiple access/collision avoidance(CSMA/CA). Schedule-based MAC protocols: such as TDMA, , access to the channel is divided into time slots that are of fixed or variable duration. There are two main schemes used for MAC protocols of sensor networks. 9
  • 10. Bluetooth : Bluetooth is a widely used communication protocol for topologies with master-slave architecture in WBANs. ZigBee: Zigbee is used primarily in a star topology of nodes, provides lower power consumption, lower data rates and longer battery life than Bluetooth. 10

  • 14. •Signal & Path Performance One might expect, the signal and path loss inside the human body is drastically different than the rules in plain space. •Usability Zheng's group classified this as usability flaw, as the usefulness of emergency detection sensors is in their detection of emergencies that are not planned. 14
  • 15. A WBAN is expected to be a very useful technology with potential to offer a wide range of benefits to patients and early detection of possible problems. Step by step, the evolutions will bring us closer to a fully operational WBAN that acts as an enabler for improving the Quality of Life. 15
