Introduction -
 WBAN is a RF based wireless networking technology.
 Integration of intelligent, low power sensor node.
 Classified into two:
- Wearable WBAN
- Implantable WBAN
 Patients health condition can be monitored anytime and
anywhere
What is WBAN ?
 Wireless Body Area Network (WBAN) is a wireless
network of wearable or around the human body
computing devices.
 It allows the integration of intelligent, low power sensor
node in, on or around a human body to monitoring body
function.
 It helps in auto medication in case of emergency.
 It senses –biological, physical, chemical changes of our
body and alarms the person who wears it.
 It sends the information through out the world through
internet.
Positioning of WBANs -
 The protocols developed for WBANs can span from
communication between the sensors on the body to
communication from a body node to a data center
connected to the internet.
 Thus communication in WBAN is divided into two parts:
–Intra body communication
–Extra body communication
 • Intra body communication controls the information handling
on the body between the sensors and personal device.
 • Extra body communication ensures communication between
the personal devices and an external network.
3-Tier Architecture -
Tier-1: WBAN Sensor
 Consists of an intelligent node which is capable of:
- Sensing
- Sampling
- Processing
- Communicating
 ECG(electrocardiogram)sensor for monitoring heart
activity
 EMB(electromyography)sensor for monitoring muscle
activity
 Consists of a blood pressure sensor
 A tilt sensor for monitoring
Tier-2: Personal server
 Interface the WBAN sensor nodes through Zigbee or
Bluetooth.
 Connected with the medical server through mobile
telephone networks (GPRS, 2G, 3G,4G) or WLANs—
Internet
 Functions:
- Register type and number sensor node .
- manages the network channel sharing, time
synchronization, and processing data.
- Send data to MS
Tier-3: Medical server
 Functions include:
- To authenticate users
- Save patient data into medical records
- Analyze the data
- Recognize serious health cases in order to contact
emergency care givers
- Forward new instruction to user.
Health Monitoring -
Technology Used -
 It is a high level communication protocol used
to create personal area networks.
 An application framework to develop the
complete wireless sensor network.
 It is used in applications that require only a low
data rate, long battery life, and secure
networking.
 ZigBee has a defined rate of 250 kbit/s and
operating at 2.4GHZ.
1.ZigBee
 It has Low data rate and short range radio
communications that is suitable for BAN nodes.
 It covers the physical (PHY) layer and medium
access control (MAC) layer.
 Both of these standards were created with a low
power consumption.
2. IEEE 802.15.4
3. Bluetooth Low Energy
 Designed as a short range wireless communication
Standard.
 Bluetooth devices connect by forming a star shaped
network topology known as a piconet.
 It operates in the 2.4 GHz ISM band and accesses all
channels through a frequency hopping mechanism.
 Bluetooth Low Energy technology supports a data rate
of up to 1 Mbps.
Comparison with another Network -
 A WBAN is operated close to human body and its
communication range will be restricted to a few meters, with
typical values around 1-2 meters.
Advantages of WBAN -
 This technique is used in military for security purposes.
 Used for the detection of chronic diseases.
 It also helps the seamless communication between
individual and machine.
Thank You
