Global freshwater consumption has risen sixfold since 1900, more than doubling the rate of population growth. Currently, about a third of the world's population lives in areas facing water stress, where consumption exceeds 10% of the total supply. If current trends continue, two-thirds of the global population will face water stress by 2025.
