Castaway
An introduction to Y10 I&S
Scenario
You and your classmates are selected to
take part in a reality TV show called
‘Castaway’
Your class will be
marooned on an
island and have
to survive there
for an extended
period.
After a couple of
days of exploration
you establish that …
… you are on a group
of islands with two
main islands.
The islands are very isolated so you can’t leave.
You have no means of communication with the
outside world.
The island is heavily
forested.
There is some bird
life and reptiles on
the island, but no
big animals.
The coral reefs
around the island
are rich in marine
life.
The beaches of the
island do have
plastic and other
waste that has been
carried there by
ocean currents.
There are indigenous
people living on the
other main island.
They speak a different
language and have a
hostile look about
them.
The indigenous
people’s boats look
too small for the
distance you would
need to travel to
escape the island.
Task
Put simply, your task is to survive!
You will be part of a group.
Your group will need to create a plan to
ensure that you will survive.
You will later present this to the class.
Your presentation needs to address the
three following points:
1. What do you need to survive?
2. What do you need to do to survive?
3. Will the decisions you make be
sustainable in the long run?
Your plan must be realistic given the
current scenario you are in.
Keep in mind you are developing a plan
that may have to be used for many
generations on the island.
Your Presentation
You have a choice of media for your
presentation.
Everyone from your group must take part
in the presentation (or appear in a video or
photostory if you select those formats).
Approaches to Learning
• Enhance and practice collaboration skills,
organizational skills and the presentation
of information
• Apply critical thinking skills to a
simulated scenario
Time Frame
Class 1: Separate into groups. Brainstorm
what you will need to survive
Class 2: Put together a long term plan.
Create your presentation.
Class 3: Finish and rehearse presentations.
Class 4: Deliver your presentations.
You may also need to spend time on this
for homework, too.
Assessment
This is not formally assessed but it will tell
your teacher a lot about:
• You as an individual
• How you collaborate in a group
• How creative you are
• How seriously you take your learning
• Your teacher will give you formative
feedback on Criterion C: Communication
And at the end of the presentations the
class will vote on which group has the best
plan to survive. The best plan will become
the strategy for the island.
And those who come up with the worst
plan will be voted off the island.
Will your group lead the rest to survive?
