Lake preservation and protection in Hyderabad: a watershed systems approachSiddharth Hande
This is a presentation that builds on Hyderabad Urban Labs hypothesis that the preservation and protection of urban water bodies require actors to pursue an ecologically sensitive approach, which goes beyond property boundaries by explore the catchment in which these water bodies are in. Flows of water and waste are governed by an ecological frame that we believe is best understood at the scale of the watershed / catchment. This presentation will demonstrate the insights we can gain using this approach. It will also discuss a series of short term, medium term and long term interventions that can be imagined by urban communities.
This presentation was given at Lamakaan on 24th March 2013.
I gave this talk at a stormwater conference to help people think through some of the reasons for modelling, and how to get the most from their modelling efforts.

Water treatment is any process that improves the quality of water to make it appropriate for a specific end-use. The end use may be drinking, industrial water supply, irrigation, river flow maintenance, water recreation or many other uses, including being safely returned to the environment. Water treatment removes contaminants and undesirable components, or reduces their concentration so that the water becomes fit for its desired end-use. This treatment is crucial to human health and allows humans to benefit from both drinking and irrigation use.
I designed a restoration and conservation plan to improve the island habitat and native special at the Cedar Creek/Lake Muhlenberg region of Allentown, PA. My research proposal was part of an interdisciplinary Sustainability Studies course where each student selected a real environmental issue facing the City of Allentown in which the Parks and Recreation Department desired to improve. My proposal was actually picked up, funded by, and put into action by various partners who contributed their expertise to the project, such as the Edge of the Woods Nursery in Allentown, a nonprofit organization Friends of the Allentown Parks, and the Lehigh Valley Chapter of the National Audubon Society

Three presentations from Session 34 of the Greater Mekong Forum on Water, Food and Energy, co-hosted by IWRP, the GIZ-MRC Network for Sustainable Hydropower Development in the Mekong countries, the Natural Heritage Institute and Deltares. The Mekong region is undergoing significant change in water resources development for multiple purposes, including hydropower, agriculture, fisheries production and navigation. This also requires the management of the river and its life- and livelihood-giving ecosystems for long term sustainability. Without coordinated development and effective river basin management, the Mekong Basin is exposed to many risks to water resources and associated ecosystems, including floods and drought, deterioration of water quality, reduction of sedimentation loads and extinction of many aquatic species. This session provided an opportunity to recognize these challenges in river basin management and identify development and management needs to tackle these issues.
Muskegon Lake, located in Muskegon, Mich., has been listed as a Great Lakes Area of Concern due to a significant loss of wildlife habitat and degraded water quality. This presentation will discuss how an organized grassroots effort has successfully received state and federal funding to implement large-scale ecological restoration projects throughout the lake.
Victoria’s River Red Gum parks are a magnificent conservation asset and a great legacy in terms of social and indigenous justice because these are the first Victorian national parks to be co-managed with the Traditional Owners.
Created by the Brumby government, they stretch from the lower reaches of the Goulburn and Ovens Rivers, along the Murray to the border with South Australia.
But there remains unfinished business – these floodplain ecosystems are in crisis and need a secure allocation of environmental water.
Sustainable Fertilizer Delivery Systems and Biosorbents Eric Chan
An entry for the Elsevier Green and Sustainable Chemistry Challenge. The technology could make a substantial impact on the developing world and this entry was selected as one of the Top 5 out of 500 submissions worldwide.
Water harvesting – a solution to drought & falling level of ground water ...Sumit Dharmarao
India is one of the growing economy in the world. Nearly 65% population of nation depends upon agriculture to fulfill their needs, eventually whole economy of nation depends on Agriculture. Agricultural production based on availability of water. Due to high industrialization and deforestation rain rate is decreasing in Indian subcontinent which results in frequent droughts. Due to drought there is sudden reduction in agricultural production and also increased pressure on ground water. Shortness of water is coped by ground water. Every ones thirst of water results in undeclared competition eventually water level below ground falls down. Water harvesting means saving & storing every drop of water is the only solution to frequent drought & maintaining ground water level.

In a May 9, 2024 paper, Juri Opitz from the University of Zurich, along with Shira Wein and Nathan Schneider form Georgetown University, discussed the importance of linguistic expertise in natural language processing (NLP) in an era dominated by large language models (LLMs).
The authors explained that while machine translation (MT) previously relied heavily on linguists, the landscape has shifted. “Linguistics is no longer front and center in the way we build NLP systems,” they said. With the emergence of LLMs, which can generate fluent text without the need for specialized modules to handle grammar or semantic coherence, the need for linguistic expertise in NLP is being questioned.
