The Earth is made up of four major interconnected systems: the atmosphere, biosphere, hydrosphere, and geosphere. The atmosphere is made primarily of nitrogen and oxygen and surrounds the planet. The biosphere includes all living things and organic matter. The hydrosphere contains all of Earth's water, including oceans, lakes, rivers, ice caps, and water vapor. The geosphere is the solid part of Earth, including its interior layers and crust composed mainly of oxygen, silicon, and magnesium. Earth system science studies how changes in one system can impact the others through their constant interactions.
