• Also called Systematic Observation
• A predominantly quantitative method
• Predetermined observation categories
are used
• More apt for objectivist-positivist
approaches
• A non-participant method

3. Observation Schedule
• An Observation Schedule is the primary
instrument used in a Structured Observation
• Used widely in Educational Research,
Working with Infants/Children etc.
• Prepared from existing literature/knowledge
• Counting/Tallying etc. are frequently
employed

• The data obtained from Structured
Observation are mostly quantitative
• Statistical operations/tabulation can be
performed
• Replicable results are generated
• Doubtful whether a purely qualitative
method

• May exclude behaviour not covered in
the schedule
