2. Objectives
Students will be able:
- Differentiate between qualitative and quantitative research
- Tools used for conducting research
- What is research
- the process of doing nursing research
- Importance of nursing research
3. What is nursing research
● Nursing research is research that provides evidence used to support nursing
practices. Nursing, as an evidence-based area of practice, has been
developing since the time of Florence Nightingale to the present day, where
many nurses now work as researchers based in universities as well as in the
health care setting.
● To develop knowledge about health and the promotion of health over the full
lifespan, care of persons with health problems and disabilities, and nursing
actions to enhance the ability of individuals to respond effectively to actual or
potential health problems
● Research helps in determining the most effective pratices, and improve
patient care, and helping them to repond to changes in the healthcare
enviroment.
5. Process of research
The Idea/ Define a problem
● Do you want to know?
● Has it been researched
before?
Hypothesis
● The “what, if, does, why
and how”
● Ethical issue of your
research.
● Make an educated
guess for the answer to
your question.
Data Collection
● Survey/ Questionnaire/
Experiment/ Observation/
Interview/ Talk Groups
● Who is your target group?
● Time frame
● Method of analysis you want to
use
Discussion
● Interpretation of the
data/evidence
● Pairing with theoretical
approaches
● Discussing your understanding
of the outcome.
Data Analysis & Results
● Your method of analysis
● Providing evidence (Statistic,
etc.)

6. Keep in mind!
While doing a research keep in mind
● Testability of the question.
● The variables under study.
● The population being studied.
● Ethical issues and concerns
● Relevance of the study.

9. Types of research
Qualitative research:
- Focuses on gathering data using open-ended
and coversational methods
- Not about “what” people think, but also “why”
they thought so.
WHILE
Quantitative research:
- Process of collecting and analyzing
numerical data such as surveys and
percentages
- To find patterns, averages, make possible
prediction and test causal relationships.
- Applies for a wider range of population
11. Quantifying a Problem
Quantifying a Problem:
- Can you express the problem using
numbers or measurements?
- Can the answers to your problem be
identified with a survey?
Random Sampling:
- Choosing of participants without any prior
criteria
Example
Question: What influenced students to take on
nursing?
Hypothesis:
On the rating of 1-5, how important is nursing?
Criteria: students studying nursing
Sampling: not affected by age, gender, religion,
country of origin and culture.
Random Sampling
14. Qualitative Research
Conduct a qualitative research
- Do you have a focus group?
- Observation of your interviewee via an interview?
- Audio/video recordings done with permission from interviewee?
15. Importance of nursing research
❖ For nurses to adopt evidence-based practices (EBP) through research
methodologies
❖ EDP helps nurses make well-founded practices which results in
- better patient outcomes
- reduced expenses for healthcare organizations
❖ Using EBP also results in more consistent clinical recommendations and
practice across the health service
❖ It represents the best type of evidence for informing nurses’ actions, decisions
and interactions with clients
16. Reflect!
Take 5 -7 mins to discuss with your team of 5 on what you have learn about
nursing research today!
Answer these qns and upload it into the google classroom as a team.
