Pulpy kidney is caused by Clostridium perfringens Type D bacteria multiplying in the intestines and producing a toxin absorbed into the blood, most commonly affecting the kidneys of sheep, goats, and cattle. Animals with pulpy kidney do not show obvious symptoms and often die suddenly. Risk factors include increased or changed feed intake. The disease can be spread by bacteria and treated by giving sulphur or vaccinating and moving animals to shorter pasture.
