14. Respiration in Plants
1) Glucose is the preferred substrate for respiration in plants, with all other carbohydrates first converted to glucose before entering the respiratory pathway. Fats must be broken down to glycerol and fatty acids first before entering, and proteins are degraded into individual amino acids.
2) While respiration involves substrate breakdown, and was traditionally viewed as catabolic, the respiratory pathway is actually involved in both catabolism and anabolism. Intermediates from the pathway are withdrawn for biosynthesis of substrates like fatty acids.
3) Therefore, the respiratory pathway is more accurately considered an amphibolic pathway involved in both breakdown and synthesis, rather than solely a catabolic one.

- 4. GROUPS • do not have tissues to transport water and food (nonvascular) • Have transport system(vascular)
- 5. NONVASCULAR 1. Liverworts 2. Mosses 3. Hornworts
- 6. NONVASCULAR They are attached to the places where they live by means of their root-like rhizoids.
- 7. NONVASCULAR They do not have true roots, stems and leaves so they grow very close to damp grounds, stone walls or tree trunks.
- 8. LIVERWORTS Are flat and ribbonlike
- 9. MOSSES have many small leaflike structures.
- 10. HORNWORTS grow flat leaves on top of each other
- 11. When nonvascular plants mature, they also form different reproductive structures.
- 12. Liverworts develop “umbrella-like” structures that produce eggs and sperms.
- 13. Eggs and sperms in Hornworts are seen as thin “thorn-like” structures.
- 14. USES 1. Provide oxygen 2. Prevent erosion 3. Increase the capacity of soil to hold water.
- 15. USES Dried SPHAGNUM or peat moss – is used to wrap plants and breakable items during transport.
- 16. VASCULAR PLANTS -with true roots, stems and leaves.
- 17. FERNS -with true roots, stems and leaves. -reproduce by spores. - can be found in moist, shaded and mountainous areas
- 18. FERNS -some inhabit freshwaters, while others grow on tree trunks. Ex. 1. giant fern 2. tree fern
- 19. USES OF FERNS 1. produce food and oxygen 2. plant decoration
- 20. GYMNOSPERM - plants whose seeds are borne in cones (naked seed). - sources of quality wood for making plywood and furniture.
- 21. GYMNOSPERM - also supply pulp to paperproducing factories. -provide resin, used in making perfumes and varnishes.
- 22. EXAMPLES OF GYMNOSPERM 1. conifers 2. cycads 3. ginkgoes 4. gnetophytes
- 23. CONIFERS - grow in cold countries and in elevated places in warmer climates -woody trees and have tough needle-like leaves Ex. Pine trees

- 30. 2. biennials – develop roots, stems and leaves during the first year, produce seeds on the second year, then die.
- 31. 3. perennials – live for many years, usually producing woody stems like tsitsirika, bamboo, and trees.

- 33. EPIPHYTES – live in tree trunks for support. Ex. Orchids
- 34. Leaves of angiosperms also differ in their arrangement in the stem. 1. alternately 2. radially 3. opposite
