Essay on Magic and Superstition in the Middle Ages
Superstitions have influenced the lives of human beings perhaps since the beginning of mankind. For
millennia, people have clung to beliefs and practices surrounding preternatural activities. Even after
science has produced evidence to explain what was once considered supernatural, the superstitious
traditions have continued. During the Middle Ages, many new superstitious rituals were developed
and some can still be seen in use today. However, the trivial superstitious rituals of today, such as
hanging a horse shoe on a door or knocking on wood to bring good fortune, did not begin so simply.
Superstition, as defined by the Oxford dictionary is, excessively credulous belief in and reverence for
the supernatural. In no other time was ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Here, the belief shifted from searching for a higher spirituality to having found that elevation in the
Incarnate Word, Jesus Christ. This alteration in the philosophical outlook of the people brought about
a whole new aspect of the supernatural. Now that there was a great power to believe in, there were sets
of rules introduced to ensure pure worship of the new found Incarnate Word. A few centuries later, the
renowned Roman Statesman Cassiodorus (485 585AD) would quote the meaning of philosophy in a
way that would help characterize the culture of Christendom, which would therefore determine the
way for superstitions to transpire throughout the Middle Ages. Cassiodorus said, Philosophy is to be
assimilated to God insofar as this is possible for a human being (McGinn 33). Following this
impactful clarification, many changes occurred in Christian spirituality. Ancient Christianity was
evolving into a new Medieval Christianity . With those changes came the birth of many interesting,
sometimes bizarre, superstitions which would affect the lives of many and even contribute to the
modification of other religions. Around 1141AD, Hugh of Saint Victor would claim that Magic was
not accepted as a part of philosophy, but stands with a false claim outside it ( Chronology of Modern
Christianity: Timeline of Witches and Witchcraft ). Magic, evidently, had its own metaphysical
classification with its own set

The US Economy
The United States is currently experiencing a slow recovery from the recession of 2008 09. The
current unemployment rate is 7.7%, which is the lowest level since December of 2008 (BLS, 2012).
However, this rate is believed to higher than the rate that would occur if the economy was operating at
peak efficiency, and it is also believed that there are structural issues still underpinning this
performance. For example, the number of Americans who have exited the work force as the result of
prolonged unemployment is believed to be higher than usual. In addition, the Congressional Budget
Office (CBO, 2012) notes that long term unemployment of greater than 26 weeks is at a much higher
rate than normal, which will have adverse long run effects on the economy, since workers with long
term unemployment often find their career paths derailed. The current rate of GDP growth, according
to the Bureau of Economic Analysis, is 2.7% (for Q3), and it was 1.3% in Q2 of this year. This rate
reflects relatively slow growth, with challenges remaining in the domestic market and with
sluggishness in Europe suppressing exports to that region. The rate of GDP growth is predicted to
slow to a decline of 0.5% between Q4 2012 and Q4 2013, the US re entering recession, according to
the Congressional Budget Office s projections. These projections are based on the provisions of the
Budget Control Act being enacted, though any observers are doubtful that this will occur. Inflation, the

The Safety Of Driving And Driving
Government interference was first introduced under the automobile industry dating back to the very
early 1900s, with a large topic that many people miss when going back into history: the safety of it all.
We, the population of today, are given the ability to drive up to 85mph without thinking twice about it,
our only focus being on the destination. This is recompensed to the drivers of the twenty first century
through the technical advances in firm laws, better drivers education systems, and safer roads and
vehicles. On the other hand, this was not the case a century ago, nor were drivers given the same
luxury just fifty years ago. As the high end, expensive motorized vehicle for the opulence became
cheaper and more common on the streets, danger risks peeked increasingly year after year. As broad as
it may seem, there were only two things that caused accidents on the road: lack of education when
needed in specific situations and orders to abide by. A century ago, no one thought otherwise when it
came to speeding on left turns, drinking and driving, and following the simplest, safest guidelines that
includes just wearing a seatbelt, and so this is when the government intervenes. Dating all the way
back to 1901, Connecticut was the very first state to enforce a speeding limit on motorized vehicles,
an annoying facet of today s roads from the eyes of our speeding parents. This limited the cars to
driving 12 mph within the cities and 15 mph along country roads. (History.com

On-Campus Garden Persuasive Essay
Sustainability is something we talk about a lot. It s taught to kids in elementary and middle schools
now, but when I was in primary school it was not heavily focused on. There has been shift in priorities
between generations, and I feel that it s very hard to get my generation on board with living in a
sustainable manner. I once gave a speech on the importance of recycling that almost put the entire
class to sleep. I think this is because my generation does not care, it s not their problem, the idea of the
earth not supporting them is not something that has been brought to their doorstep, and in a manner of
speaking they are unaware that their actions have negative consequences. My ideas for making the
Grand View campus more eco friendly is a three fold process fully incorporated to form a closed loop.
First, I believe we should have a(n) on campus garden(s) where students are responsible for caring for
crops which could be consumed in the cafeteria or used in a food pantry. Second, we should harvest
rainwater for use in the gardens and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In this example, the school installed a 50,000 gallon tank below the frost level in the ground. The tank
is made from recycled plastic. The water is stored in the underground tank and then it is cleaned
before it is transferred to a 600 gallon holding tank in the basement of the school (Pushard, n.d.). This
water is used in the toilets and in the irrigation systems. Any flushed water or overflow rainwater goes
into the on site wetlands which are a rubber lined rock filled pond where plants are grown in septic
water and the micro organisms and plants feed off the pollutants. The clean water is then pumped into
the ground to help recharge the aquifer (Pushard,

The Games And Its Impact On Our Childhood
Many of us have had some sort of gaming in our childhood. It s why we are who we are and why we
play the games we play now, and I assume why you are here reading a gaming article.
ChuckleFish s latest game Stardew Valley has taken the Nostalgia Train and taken a lot of players
back to their roots of Sandbox games, Harvest Moon. Almost everyone I ve talked to about this game
has at least played some sort of Harvest Moon game being that there have been loads that have come
out and still consistently are being released even to this day. However, Stardew Valley has taken us
back to the SNES Graphics style and really delivered a Harvest Moon of Today in terms of gameplay.
After around 50 hours of Gametime, I have lost myself in this simplistic yet addicting style of
gameplay. Every morning I wake up, step out of bed, walk out the door into the vast open world of my
farm. I start out the average morning watering crops doing the mundane stuff. I ll clean up the yard
should a pine tree step out of its invisible bounds that I ve placed that Mother Nature cannot seem to
see, nor understand. However, I can use the extra wood and sap for crafting. Stardew Valley boasts a
comprehensive crafting system. It fails in depth to Minecraft, though there is a lot to be made, and will
make life on the farm a whole lot easier. After my work is finished on the farm, I make my way into
town and do my rounds, pick up some seeds drop off a present to the lovely Leah.
Oddly, I have noticed

Legalizing Organ Donation
This article is about allowing the black market of organs to be legalized and regulated, and discusses
how allowing people to sell their organs actually benefit people in medical need of an organ;
essentially patients on the transplantation waiting list (Pietrobon, 2016). The author dissects the
controversial method of regulation and provides evidence to support their argument. In addition, the
author addressed the opposing side, which are against regulation of the market because it is morally
wrong. Ultimately the author shot down the claims due too inevitability of the illegal organ trade, and
lack of evidence to support the harmful affects on society. Two arguments were given to attest that
regulating the market would be more beneficial ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Suppliers primarily being poor will disproportionately suffer, while the rich counterparts benefits off
poor people s organs, since wealthier families can afford to purchase organs from the market; contrary
to legalization (Pietrobon, 2016). Furthermore, worst off groups do not have health insurance, and
receive no benefits from the market (Pietrobon, 2016). On the other hand, in support of the market,
dialysis is costly; therefore transplantation will not be such a financial reach (Pietrobon, 2016). As a
matter of fact, dialysis has a 45% survival rate, while transplant patients have an 87% survival rate,
and people who never started dialysis live longer than a patient on dialysis (Pietrobon, 2016). Too,
patients who receive a free kidney cannot afford the procedure to get the kidney physically placed in
their body (Pietrobon, 2016). Economically deficient people, either recipient or donor will face

The article further explained that aside the fact that some organizations already have factors affecting
their performance, there are some factors outside the organization that can determine the positive
result of business. For those organizations to determine how those factors outside the organization can
be of positive impact, they decide to conduct a PEST Analysis. In this research, I would be using
TARGET CANADA as a case study on PEST Analysis.
ABOUT TARGET CANADA.

Target Corporation which was formed in 2011 to oversee the company s Canadian operations. Target
Canada s main rival in the Discount store is Walmart, while there is also competition with supermarket
chains such as Loblaws, Metro and Sobeys (despite having agreement with Sobeys) and other retailers

Inherit The Wind Quotes
In the play, Inherit the Wind by Jerome Lawrence and Robert E. Lee, the character of Bertram Cates
causes the most amount of conflict and impact on his society. He teaches about evolution, so he starts
the heated argument on his punishment, and how he impacted the people with his actions
In the beginning of the play Inherit the Wind, the character of Cates causes much conflict by teaching
to his class of students about Darwin s theory of evolution in the little town of Hillsboro. Back when
this play actually happened on the exact date of July 21, 1925, in America, it was illegal to teach
public schools about Darwin s theory of evolution. But Bertram Cates decided to take matters into his
own hands and teach it to his students. As it says on Scene 1, Act 1, Cates confesses, I had the book in
my hand, I opened it up, and read my sophomore science class Chapter 17, Darwin s Origin of
Species. Therefore, he was challenged by the god of lawyers, lawyer and temporary Colonel Matthew
Harrison Brady to fight for Hillsboro, a God loving county, against him. But Cates has his own titan to
fight for him, lawyer and also temporary Colonel Henry Drummond. In act 1, scene one, E.K
Hornbeck states, And the most agile mind of the Twentieth Century, Henry Drummond. This quote
shows that Matthew Harrison Brady has his work cut out for him, a reporter says how mighty
Drummond will be. So this would have to a extremely heated court about what should happen to
Cates. And it happened. A 2 day trial containing yelling, a judge with an actual gavel, and even the
press showed up because of the significance of this court. The court has swirled the boiling pot of

Acoustic Spaces And Ambient Noise Levels
Introduction
A range of observations were conducted to assess acoustic spaces in terms of their characteristics and
ambient noise levels. Using a Digitech QM 1589 (see figure one) three studies were measured in order
to successfully account for characteristic behaviours and differentiate between ambient noise levels.
These studies where assessed under A and C weightings and in fast and slow settings. A weighting
follows the frequency sensitivity of the human ear at low

frequency sensitivity of the human ear at very high noise levels (Hear Forever, 2013). Measurement
One is the sound pressure level of 8 acoustic environments that where examined to establish the
quietest space possible, maintaining a reliable and consistent source of results. Measurement Two
follows the assessment of Clarendon Street, a busy road; involving the observations of cars, trucks and
trams that share the road. Measurement Three is the analysis between A and C weighted testing of
pink noise from a single speaker repeated at 1 and 4 metres validating the application of the Inverse
Square Law.

What Role Does Gravity Play In The Formation, Structure,...
Gravity plays a very major role in the formation, structure, and evolution of stars and their planetary
systems. Planets are kept in their orbit around a star rather than falling into the star due to gravity and
their velocity. In Earth s case, the pull of the sun s gravity and Earth s velocity keeps it orbiting around
the sun. The planets are traveling at a velocity that is perpendicular to the star they are orbiting.
Therefore, if the star (sun) was not pulling them in using gravity, the planets would simply continue in
a straight line. This is where Newton s first law come into effect that states that an object will remain
in uniform motion unless acted on by an external force. The star pulling the planets in is the external
forces acting

Measuring Populairty of NHL Franchises
I will be examining Forbes s list of most expensive NHL franchises based on data collected up until
the 2013 2014 season. This particular form of popular culture is the National Hockey League or the
professional ice hockey sport. This is an important topic to examine, because these are multi million
dollar (in some cases billion dollar) organizations/franchises where lots of revenue is made daily,
affecting the North American economy greatly. Although some teams are worth much more then
others, how well the team performs doesn t directly affect the teams overall worth, rather time spent in
the league, and location of each given team act as the biggest factors.
The National Hockey League team evaluation chart designed by Forbes measures the current value of
each of the 30 respective teams in the league. This number is found after calculating each clubs overall
revenue, minus the overall expenses of the club. The next column shows the 1 year value change in a
percentile number form, and this number is basically representing how much increased revenue each
given team has generated since last years chart. For the first time in a decade, each National Hockey
League club s revenue actually increased since last year. The next column indicates the percentage of
debt each team has to pay off. This includes any money that each team owes, and the main percentage
of this number is generated off of arena expenses. The next column in the chart represents the total
amount of revenue each

A Look Inside Native Americans High Rates of Obesity and...
Native Americans have the highest rates of obesity and diabetes in the United States. According to the
U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Native Americans are 60% more likely to be obese
and are over twice as likely to have diabetes than the general population. These numbers are even
higher for Southwest Native Americans. But their diet is very similar to the rest of modern society. So
why do Native Americans suffer these conditions at higher rates than the general population? The
answer may be found in new research that is beginning to point to a genetic cause for these conditions.
In a study by Peggy Halpern, Ph.D. for the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, she found
that historically Native Americans of the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
We know the ancestors of all Native Americans came from Asia. We know this to be a fact because
DNA analysis of Native Americans, including Native Americans of the southwestern United States,
shows a direct link to people living in northeast Asia today. According to Jake Page, former editor of
both Natural History and Smithsonian magazines: ...geneticists have found...DNA lineages present in
native populations...which...are found only in Asians... . Linguistic and dentition analysis also
demonstrate Native Americans descended from peoples living in Asia. Today, almost no one debates
the premise that the ancestors of Native Americans came from Asia. There is also very little debate as
to how these first Asians arrived in North America. Because so much of the world s water was locked
up in glaciers during the last ice age, sea level was lower than it is today. According to David Meltzer,
Associate Professor of Anthropology at Southern Methodist University and an internationally
recognized authority on the first inhabitants of the New World: ...these lowered oceans exposed the
shallow continental shelf beneath the Bering and Chukchi Seas. This shelf...connected Alaska and
Siberia...and it trafficked...in plants, animals, and people.
There is, however, much debate as to when the first Asian peoples migrated to North America.
Modern research has revealed that during the height

The Effects Of Child Labor On The Chocolate Industry
The Effects of Child Labor in the Chocolate Industry: December 6, 2015, was an important day for
many Americans, as it marked the 150th year since the abolishment of slavery when the U.S.
authorized the 13th Amendment to the Constitution to end what can be described as the darkest
chapter of American history. Many in Western Society seem to be unaware of the contemporary
slavery still plaguing many developing countries, particularly involving children. The 2010
documentary film called The Dark Side of Chocolate explored the modern day slavery that is
occurring within many West African countries, where children are being exploited and trafficked in
order to harvest chocolate. In fact, the United States Department of State estimates that approximately
109,000 children in the Ivory Coast s cocoa industry work under the worst forms of child labor
(Mustapha, 2010, p.3).
By exploring the use of child labor in the chocolate industry in West Africa, this paper will present the
argument where I will argue that the unethical use of child labor has led to impoverished families,
negative health impacts among children, and has affected economies in West Africa. In order to
overcome this situation, there is a need for enforced policies, government action, and corporations
taking accountability in order to put an end to child labor. The first part of the paper will discuss how
the cocoa industry affects families, the health of child laborers, and the economy, followed by various

Hiroshima Bombing Essay
Hiroshima and Nagasaki Bombing
The United States of America became the first and the only realm to use the atomic bomb weaponry
during the war. The event happened when the nation dropped the atomic bomb on the city of
Hiroshima in japan. Although the nation had their intentions on dropping the weapon, it brought a lot
of negative impacts both to Japan and to America. Over seventy years later the bombing impact is still
very significant not only to the affected nation, but also to world history on war. Although the atomic
bombing of Hiroshima brought an end to World War II, it is argued that it started a cold war between
the two nations.
The United States was developing atomic weapons from the year 1940 even after being warned by
Albert Einstein on the research on nuclear weapons by Nazi Germany. By the time the United States
tested its first atomic bombing Mexico in July 1945, Germany had already been defeated. However,
the war against Japan in the pacific was increasingly becoming furious. The then American president
Harry S. Truman had been warned by some of his advisers on the casualties that would befall America
if they went ahead with the bombing. However, the president ordered for the use of the new weapon in
an attempt to end the war.
On the 6th of August 1945, a five ton bomb was dropped on Hiroshima city in japan. The very
powerful blast brought down a four square miles of the city reducing it to ruins. Over 80,000 people
were killed on the spot and a lot more died

large and famous franchises. Watching movies is like a hobby for me; every weekend, I would watch a

experience of watching a countless number of movies, I know out of all the movie franchises, Marvel
Cinematic Universe is by far the best movie franchise, having the highest movie ratings and the largest

Chief Seattle Essay
Chief Seattle
When stories are told about the American Indian it is usually the Indians that are looked upon as the
heathens. They are portrayed as savages who spent most of their time raiding wagon trains and
scalping the white settlers just for fun. The media has lead us to believe that the American government
was forced to take the land from these savage Indians. We should put the blame where it belongs, on
the U.S. Government who lied, cheated, and stole from the Indians forcing many Indian leaders to
surrender not only their tribes but their nation in order to save the lives of their people.
Among the Indians of the Pacific Northwest, perhaps the best known may be Chief Seattle. Chief

Once the settlers were able to make it on there own, they no longer needed Indian help. Then they
began to try to change the ways and beliefs of the Indian. One of the aspects that the settlers spent
much time on trying to change of the Indians was their religion. Influenced by missionaries, Seattle
decided to convert to Christianity and was later baptized in 1838 by Father Modest Demers, at which
time Seattle adopted the Christian name Noah . One of the major differences I noticed while
researching information about Chief Seattle is that in Catholicism there is one book, I m sure that we
all have heard of it, the Bible. In Catholicism it is made up of the Old Testament and the New

Testament is made up of scriptures written up after the coming of Jesus. These scriptures are written
up pretty straight forward and they are read year in and year out. There is no room for individual
interpretation by the reader, it is set in structure. In the Indian religion everything is told through
myths and legends. Because of this everything is passed down from chief to chief

Plato And Aristotle s Views On Life And Political Regime
Western philosophy s origins can be traced back to the ideas of Greek philosophers Aristotle and
Plato. Aristotle and Plato were philosophers who lived in Athens, Greece who critically studied
matters of human life, political rule, human nature, and therefore wrote on the subjects. Plato s ideals
are theoretically based and although Aristotle was one of his students his thoughts and ideas are more
practical and biologically orientated than Plato s ideals. Although Plato and Aristotle have similar
ideas on ideal human life and political regime there approach on both is distinct, since Aristotle
focuses more on developmental and practical forms of life and Plato strives to proclaim the ideal
forms although they may be unattainable. An ideal purpose or function exists for individuals in both
Plato s and Aristotle s conceptualizations of mankind. This ideal purpose is called a telos, and every
human being has a telos to live up to. According to The Republic written by Plato the soul consists of
three parts: reason, spirit and appetite. (Plato p. 130: 435 b c; p. 135: 440 e) Each person is governed
by one of the three components of their soul and it ultimately determines their role in society.
Individuals with a soul that is dominated by reason are the only ones that are rational and those who
spirit or appetite rule there body are deemed as irrational. The component of reason in the soul is the
rational part which is wise and rules the spirited and appetitive

The Differences And Similarities Between Cats And Dogs
There are several similarities between cats and dogs, but at the same time, there are a lot of differences
between them. These two animals are the most popular pets today. Some people would rather have the
company of a cat, and some would rather have the company of a dog. Some similarities between dogs
and cats are that they are apart of the mammal kingdom. They give birth to their young. They both can
give birth to multiple offsprings at one time, and they both also drink milk from their mothers when
they are babies. Dogs and cats are also kept as pets, and they need love and affection from their
owners. When you pet your dog or cat it can relieve stress that you have and your pets. Both cats and
dogs display natural territorial instincts. They both mark and defend their own territory. Cats will
avoid other cats territory unless they have to pass through. When a dog comes into another dog s
territory, that dog will show dominates and shoo the other dog away. According to Pets4Homes, they
say we often think that humans tamed cats and dogs and turned them into the pets that we own today,
in reality, it was the cats and dogs themselves that initiated their first interactions with humans,
moving closer and closer to human settlements several millennia ago. Cats and dogs would benefit
from close proximity to human habitation in order to scavenge and find food and stay warm, while
humans got the advantage of having dogs to scare off potential threats and help them to

Penny Is A Waste Of Time Essay
Some people are arguing that the penny is just a waste of time to make, it takes up too much space and
it takes forever to count out. Some people think that they shouldn t ban the penny is a small coin and it
helps us in a lot of situation at the store because if something costs a $1.50 it can come out to be $1.54
and what coin do you use to make up all those extra cents the penny.
Even though this might seem crazy there is a very good explanation to this the penny costs more to
make than its actual value it cost more and it takes up a lot of space. Reason one it takes up a lot of
space, reason two they take too long to count. These are two reasons that on why people hate pennies.
Now for some reasons on why some people love the penny. Reason one the penny is helpful in some
cases like when you need to pay and the total is $1.56 you need that penny, reason two the penny is
one of the few coins that can help us a lot. These are some of the reasons on why we should keep the
penny. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
For over 30 years the penny hasn t been used in foreign military bases. People say that pennies are too

The rounding system seems to work well for the military troops in foreign countries.some people
worry that the rounding system would end up making them pay more. Over 600 million dollars worth
of money is spent a year for making penny. I could see why they re mad the coin costs 1 cent and

The Emergence Of Scientific Management
The emergence of scientific management
Frederick W. Taylor is called the father of scientific management who is world famous through his
book named The Principles of Scientific Management . The Principles of Scientific Management was
first published in the early 20th century. Through his work, Frederick W. Taylor described that the
process of scientific management can increase total worker organizational efficiency.
The theory of scientific management was not invented by one day. It took many times for Frederick
W. Taylor to understand that time s organizational structure; workers behavior machinery tools etc. the
idea was generated in his mind because he worked in various firms during the late 19th century,
starting in 1878 with Midvale steel company. He worked there several years recognized some of the
process of the factory operation. He realized, at that time the management had no clear knowledge of
working responsibilities or management responsibilities. There wasn t any organized or structured
work standard. The managers were taking their decision with guess, past experience, intuition which
in many time resulted in failure. The workers efficiency level didn t grow.
Frederick w. Taylor was promoted to chief engineer at the age of twenty eight. At that time he also
saw that the bonding among the workers and the foremen is too weak like struggling over the quantity
of output. Taylor wanted to implement some general method to solve that matter, but he understood

Trial of Temple Anneke Essay
Predetermined Justice
Witchcraft in early modern Europe was understood to be the combination of maleficium and
diabolism. The term maleficium refers to the actual act of witchcraft, which was believed to be
harmful magic or sorcery. Allegations of maleficium were simply the foundation for the crime of
witchcraft. Diabolism is what made witchcraft a crime because it involved trading oneself for magical
abilities from the Devil (xxv).
With regard to religion during early modern Europe, it was highly regarded. There was no direct
separation between church and state. Witchcraft was acknowledged as an act against God, as well as a
capital offense. The Carolina, which was the imperial criminal code....of Emperor Charles V , was

Tempel Anneke was accused of crimes that were, for the most part, uncontrollable events.
Unfortunately for Tempel Anneke, during this time people were quick to assume witchcraft as the
source of their problems or any negative unexplainable event. There was very little knowledge about
healthcare at this time so it was a common practice to just blame it on the witch.
The initial questions Tempel Anneke was asked pointed out the similarities between her and what
were thought to be the characteristics of a witch. When the interrogator questioned her age and means
of personal finance, she did not state her age but did say that she was a widow and lived with her son
on his farm but did perform healings when needed. She was then questioned about her education and
religious practices. She responded by saying she had learned how to heal people from observing her
mother. Also, she testified that she knew the commandments but had not been to the table of the Lord
or the Holy Communion in two years (15). It did not help that she was not looked up to in the
community but was part of the lower class. According some of the testimony by her accusers, most
people thought that Tempel Anneke was a crazy, old drunk.
As questioning continued, she was asked about specific crimes that she had been accused of
committing. After the testimony had been taken from

There are two rights . Right one a woman s right to choose what do with her body. Pro choice people

A Collective Identity Of Europe
Post war European nations were faced with the task of restructuring their states after the devastating
war. A collective agreement was made for a political body to help stabilize much of Europe. The
Community provided external political structure that would provide the means necessary to create a
stable economy and develop technologies, but in order to do so there would need to be a collective
identity of Europe. As nation states were trying to redefine their history and assert their independence
it became a delicate balance between maintaining their own identity and joining in the Community
that would impose new regulation but also provide the resources necessary to rebuild economically.
This struggle to maintain a national identity ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The benefit was that nation states could now have their own domestic economy and still benefit from
the advancing international markets that were more accessible.
However, economics cannot be viewed as an independent unit. How the market works is inadvertently
based on a cultural set of ideals and markets can function differently from state to state. In order to
formalize an institution to control the economy new regulations must be set in place. In the sense of
the European Community all nations states had to join together to create a set of rules that everyone
agreed upon. By abiding by new rules nations in return could expect to benefit from a larger political
body. This all sounded very promising, a new and stronger institution would regulate the economy,
and provide security for the vulnerable post war nations. In doing so, Europe would create a collective
identity, a sense of nationality. Although after the war the idea of a stronger unified economy sounded
promising it could also be viewed as a hindrance in the long term. The European Community s goal
was to create a unification of the nation states but from the viewpoint of a individual state this could
be a loss of independence and identity. This communal identity made western European states
resemble each other much more than they resembled those of other places or other times. The focus

Adult Gaudy
I just got done reading this passage that talks about a couple that wants to get divorced. During the
passage the couple get into an argument about being grown up. The woman named Luci says No
worries I believe we re both adults here and the man named Lon responds with Believe what you want
that right there shows that this couple does not like agreeing with each other and that Lon is sort of
childish because of his sarcastic response. So they talk and argue with each other for a couple more
lines then Lon comes out and says Just because you re eighteen, that doesn t mean you re an adult.
Neither does being fifty six. In fact, I think people pretend to appear responsible because that s what
we believe an adult is. Why does getting a gaudy ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Some of the stuff that he said is true but when you are old enough to live alone you kind of have to
have responsibilities. As we get older we have to learn how to rely on ourselves and how to take
charge of our responsibilities. Lon said we just pretend to appear responsible because that s what we
believe an adult is. I think this statement is wrong because if an adult doesn t become responsible they
will suffer a lot in there lives. For example there comes a point in everybody s lives when our parents
don t and maybe can t take care of us any more, so we have to go and get jobs, buy a home, get a
career, and stuff like that. If an adult doesn t do this than what will come from their future they wouldn

said Just because you are eighteen, that doesn t mean you re an adult . I don t agree with this because
in the United States of America once you turn eighteen you are officially an adult. You can get a job,
you can own your own home, you can do so many other things. My dad told me once I turn eighteen I

In The Waiting Room Essay
In the Waiting Room can be argued to be both the most discussed poem and the best poem of Bishop
s. To her horror, the Elizabeth in the poem discovers that she is an I and one of them (PPL150). This
thought, which is precipitated by numerous things, especially Aunt Consuelo s oh! and the horrifying
breast of the women in the waiting room s copy National Geographic, plunges her into despair about
society s order (PPL 149). In a way, this poem expresses both the awakening of oneself as a person
and the awakening to their sexuality. Elizabeth is terrified of things that are associated with women,
breast, a cry of pain, and as such she is forced to realize that she is a woman as well and, potentially,
has the same fate as them. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Ostriker encourages the readers not to be shy as Bishop both yearns for and fears the erotic,
experiences it as actual or potential pain, and produces screens to disguise the experience (241). These
early works and their position on her childhood provide insight into Bishop s life, especially of her
love of women, despite being indirectly about her sexuality. As such, these hidden ideas in her poems
should be explored by the readers because it helps us to better understand her. The poems Bishop had
published later in life, namely Insomnia, The Shampoo, One Art, and finally Sonnet, deal more with
her reluctance to expose her sexuality than discovering it as she does in these earlier poems.
Of the fourpoems listed above, Insomnia is the most concealed in terms of sexuality. Without proper
insider knowledge, this poem could easily be overlooked, but its use of the term inverted signals to
people that she is talking about her lesbian identity (PPL 54). Without the in group knowledge, Bishop
can hide her discussion of sexuality in this poem which is otherwise freely discussed. The last stanza
imagines the world inverted where you love me and ultimately states that Bishop wants a world like
this (PPL 54). Ideas of gender roles and how they interact with sexuality causes Bishop to hide her
true thoughts and feelings and only in an inverted world can she thrive. Still, as Harrison points out
the tone in this poem is both bitter and defiant.

Pharmaceutical Drugs
Introduction Pharmaceutical drugs have been beneficial to our modern society, but a consequence of
their manufacturing is that numerous pharmaceutical industries are simultaneously releasing toxic
compounds in the environment. Due to the manufacturing of several pharmaceutical industries, it
generated huge quantities of wastes in the water, which directly affected the aquatic organisms
(Patneedi et al. 2015). It has been over four decades since the discovery of pharmaceutical drugs in the
water, but only in the last decade has there been increasing concerns about active pharmaceutical
contaminants in waste water effluents (Patneedi et al. 2015). Pharmaceuticals are one of the emerging

If the HQ calculated is less than 1 (HQ 1), there will be no anticipated adverse effects as a result of
exposure, however, the study indicated how the hazard quotient (HQ) of 50% of the 2986 different
pharmaceutical compounds in the water exceeded the value of 1 (HQ 1) (Sanderson et al. 2004b).
Also, the study determined that pharmaceutical compounds such as cardiovascular, anxiolytic
sedatives hypnotics and antipsychotics, gastrointestinal, antiviral and corticosteroid, had high HQs in
which it would exceed the value of 1 even without the assessment factor of 1000 (Sanderson et al.

cardiovascular, gastrointestinal, and anxiolytic sedatives hypnotics and antipsychotics, were the three
most hazardous classes based on predicted toxicity (Sanderson et al. 2004b). Since there are
pharmaceutical chemicals that exceeded the HQs, aquatic organisms such as fishes were susceptible to
the adverse effects and the high toxicity of the pharmaceuticals in the water (Sanderson et al. 2004b).
A more recent study by Carlsson et al. (2006) depicted how nine out of twenty seven APIs selected in

Abstract

Specifically, another potential dimension, recovery, is incorporated into the SERVPERF instrument.
After establishing sufficient reliability and validity of this instrument, we proceed with the second
objective to examine the relationship among service quality, food quality, perceived value, customer
satisfaction, and behavioral intentions. The organization of this paper includes another five sections.
The theoretical foundation of perceived service quality and its dimensions are reviewed in the next
section, followed by the research methodology including the development of the instrument. Then, the
data analysis and findings of this study are presented, followed by the conclusions and managerial
implications. The paper concludes with a section on the limitations of this work and potential future
research. 2. Theoretical foundation The importance of service quality is substantially addressed in the
fast food management literature. Superior service leads to satisfied and loyal customers whose
continued patronage is essential to the success of FFRs. Conversely, poor service quality increases
customer dissatisfaction and the likelihood that customers dine at a competitor s FFR and/or become
an active champion in persuading others to go elsewhere (Gilbert et al., 2004). Hence, it is crucial for
service managers to understand how customers perceive the service they provide, and what
components might determine

The Pros And Cons Of Refugees
Nowadays, with the same or worst, experiences that the Returnees, we have the Refugees from all
over the world. Refugees are forced to leave their lives, their country in order to find safety, people
being persecuted or in the middle of a war, have to seek protection in international law, and must not
jeopardize their safety or their freedom. (UNHCR: the UN Refugee Agency, 2006)
Refugees is a reality from our world. Many suffered from economic inequality and the conflicts in
their own country and have two make a decision between living in fear and in a struggle at their own
home or immigrate to a country where they might regain their hope to start a new life. (Turton and
Gonçaléz, 2003) The increase of refugees globally it is concerning the educational systems in our
societies. There are 59,5 million people who were obligated to live their countries because of
persecutions, wars, or violation of the human rights. (Bhu et al, 2012) (UHCR: the UN Refugee

The UN 1951 convention stated that refugees are vulnerable due to the fact that the confronted

The UN convention defines refugees as individual who:

The Classic Inferno By Dante Alighieri
The classic Inferno by Dante Alighieri is beautifully woven to reflect the realities or unrealities of the
time. The various circles of hell are used by the writer to tell the tale in a free flowing manner (Havely,
98). Interesting, however, is the manner in which he describes the characters such that they are seen to
be facing tragedies in their life in hell. The writer categorizes the different types of sins that people
can commit and subjects the characters to various punishments, each of which is in a separate circle in
hell. Lawall opines that the writer uses a style that makes the reader envision themselves in the poem
(Lawall, 17). In so doing, the writer subjects the characters to relatively tragic states even though they

The story narrates that Francesca and Paolo are both punished in hell for their adultery and thus the
subjection to the circle of lust (Alighieri, 1012). She expounds that she had been married to Paolo s
brother Gianciotto. Francesca discloses that she was not shy of expressing her feelings towards Paolo,
who she loved even though she was married to his brother. One day, she reveals, her husband caught
them together inside her bedroom and was sure that they were lovers. Francesca opened the door and
pretended that all was well before her husband. Unknown to Francesca, Paolo had got stuck in a
ladder as he attempted to run away. Gianciotto then killed the two of them, although he had not
intended to kill his wife. The circumstance that led to her death is an emphasis of the beauty of love.
When Gianciotto jumped to slay Paolo with his sword, Francesca rushed in between and faced the
death first. The husband was too disappointed and ended up killing Paolo as well. The portrayal of the
two characters as lovebirds and the lack of love between Francesca and her husband show the reality
that was then (Alighieri, 1013). The writer further says, through Francesca, that Gianciotto was
thrown into the circle of Caina for killing his family members. This assertion, in character is a
balanced move to portray both parties (Francesca and Gianciotto) as losers in the fight. However, the
fact that

Indian and International Accounting Standards
Indian and International Accounting Standards Practices
Introduction:
Accounting Standards are used as one of the main compulsory regulatory mechanisms for preparation
of general purpose financial reports and subsequent audit of the same, in almost all countries of the
world. Accounting standards are concerned with the system of measurement and disclosure rules for
preparation and presentation of financials statements. They appear with a set of authoritative
statements of how particular types of transactions, events and other costs should be recognized and
reported in the financial statements. Accounting standards are devised to furnish useful information to

Do we need to harmonize the accounting standards of different bodies?
Different companies observe it from published annual accounts of various Indian companies that there
are divergent accounting practices for the same transaction. This in effect is defeating the
comparability of financial statements.
The reasons for the different accounting practices may be:
a) Too many alternative accounting treatments in the accounting standards;
b) Lack of harmony among government, standards setting body, and regulatory agencies;
* Adoption of different accounting standards causes difficulties in making relative evaluation of
performance of companies. This phenomenon hinders the valuation and consequently the decision
making process.
* To overcome these problems, harmonization of accounting standards has already been started.
Accounting harmonization is not an end by itself, but it is a means to an end. The ultimate objective of
harmonizing accounting practices among countries is to foster international comparability of accounts.
* But still the harmonization process has a long way to go. Many standard setting bodies and
regulators of different nations are ardent protectors of their local standards; they are in no mood to
allow their job being taken over by a foreign entity.
* Thus winning the consent of these bodies is vital for international accounting standards to don the
mantle of

Maori Art Essay
When looking at Maori art, there is one thing that sticks out amongst everything else with me, and
with most likely everyone that sees it for the first time, this is their tattooing skills. They are equipped
with many other art skills such as their carvings, weaponry, and townhouses, but the tattoos represent
the tribe as a whole and are visible on the people themselves.
The art of tattoo was brought to New Zealand by the Polynesians when they migrated to New Zealand.
Men of the tribe are more elaborately tattooed than the women. Their entire faces may be covered as
opposed to the women who may only have certain parts of their faces covered such as their chins,
cheeks, upper lips, and between the eyebrows. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Although these tattoos are significant to the Maori, some people may see these tattoos as a way of
decorations for barbaric people. In society, we know face paint to symbolize war and hate such as the
Indians on television. If one were to see the Maori, they would think that the Maori were either going
to war or just returning from a battle.
The women receive their tattoos also through achievement and hereditary claim, but to a lesser extent.
Examples of these are tattoos on the nose, which represent sevants, or tattoos on the back of the legs
that represent that the woman has married outside of her tribe. Genital tattoos protect the woman and
her children of future hereditary claim.
Meetinghouses were of great importance to all tribes across New Zealand. These houses were the
symbol of the past for the tribe. They were the most elaborately decorated houses in the village. If
another house were to be more beautiful, it would be an insult to the tribe. Here, the reflections of the
tradition, spirit, and history could be seen in the carvings and elaborate designs in and around the
house. The area in front of the meetinghouse was most important than even the house itself. Inside,
carvings of figures of ancestors and gods told the story of the tribe and it s history. The Maori gather
here to mourn, celebrate, discuss family matters, or whatever the occasion.

Sociological Theory
INTRODUCTION TO SOCIOLOGICAL THEORY
Compare and contrast the views of three appropriate sociological perspectives to an area of social life
of your choosing. Why do we act the way we do? Does the mass media really affect the way a people
in a society behave? Sociologists focus on the environment and the social aspects of human behaviour
in order to answer questions like these when studying a particular society. A society is defined as a
large social group that shares the same geographical territory and is governed by the same political
authority and cultural expectations. Culture is defined as the shared values of a society such as
language, beliefs and ways of doing things (Burton, 2013, online). When looking at a society there are

Functionalism was introduced by Emile Durkheim (1858 1917), who is considered by many
intellectual thinkers to be the founder of modern sociology. The main principle of functionalism is that
each part of a society is interdependent and contributes towards making society work as a whole. Each
of these parts has to be working correctly but if something does go wrong then society has
mechanisms to deal with them, such as the police and the legal system. Functionalists also believe that
every social institution has many important functions to perform (Burton, 2013, online). Durkheim
introduced the theory anomie , or lack of social norms , that could cause instability or chaos. This
concept bought to light many instances that could affect a society in a negative way and especially the
behaviour of individuals towards one another (Emile Durkheim org, 2013, online). Another concept
put forward by Durkheim the sum of all of its parts is larger than the whole , defined at the
introduction of the structural/functionalist theory, is as relevant today as it was when first introduced
(Gamble, 2008, Online). Robert K. Merton (1910 2003) is one example of how Durkheim s theories
have lasted through the ages because his theory of anomie was taken directly from Durkheim s
perspective and still remains a major theory in the structure of society, both in criminal justice and
sociology (cited in

As Hirschi has been quoted concluding that a child s relationship with his or her parent is the most
important factor in determining involvement in delinquent activities. Those who had weak bonds with
their parents were most likely to commit delinquent acts (Tepperman 2010). Hirschi s theory sheds
light on the fact that children still at crucial developmental stages of their lives are very easily
influenced by their parents and the amount of involvement one s parents has in their own lives. In this
film many of the children witnessed their own fathers participating in these barbaric acts and were
encouraged to stand up and fight for their family. A problematic social upbringing where children are
forced to interact with parents taking on violent roles has a huge impact on their own behaviors. In this
story the children gain a sense of attachment and shared identity, which is facilitated by violent family
values and rituals, such as, murder and violence. This is known as Authoritarian parenting where the
parents have a high level of control but are not very caring (forcing them to fight in a war, not
worrying if they get killed). The children seemingly become brainwashed by these notions and accept
it as their responsibility or as fate . Psychologist Jean Piaget showed in his research the self is a social

Free Trade Vs Fair Trade
Introduction
Adam Smith, author of The Wealth of Nations, shows support for free trade and emphasises it as a
trade policy which ought to be adopted. Krugman and Obstfeld back Smith s support by stating that
the efficiency of trade is increased by free trade and accumulates the national income of countries.
Free trade is a theory which suggests that each nation benefits in specialising in an economic activity
from which it gains absolute advantage, enjoying absolute superiority over other nations in a specif
economical activity (Peng). With free trade follows opportunity, replacing regulation and growth of
economic activity. (Rugmann and Collinson).

McDonald and Burton clarify that infant industries can feel supported into growth (and sometimes
beyond) by the trade policy of protectionism and tariff barriers. This form of strategic protectionism
enables industries seeking to grow to enjoy the benefits of first mover advantages, a concept of
specialising in producing and exporting only those goods and services which it can produce more
efficiently (Investopedia) and the benefits of economies of scales. A prime example of this is Amazon,
the first online bookstore. By gaining the first mover advantage into the markets, it has gained and
maintained dominance over many firms. Firms have adopted the concepts and practices such as
retailers like Barnes and Nobles. Professer Marvin Lieberman and David Montgomery, Stanford
University, conclude that first mover advantage can be gained from technology leadership, control of
resources and buyer switching costs after gaining the opportunity to access the pioneering stage of a
concept.
Free Trading Areas
Free trade areas, FTA, are economic integration arrangements in which barriers to trade (e.g. tariffs),
exchange of goods and information among member nations are removed. It is arguable to say that fair

Did you know that the Natives took hold of ancient bones that probably weren t even Native? Some
people found a full skeleton a that s about 10,000 years old at the bottom of the Columbia River. The
Natives claimed that the old bones were their ancestor and took the bones to the buried. When the
bones were found they were turned to scientists to study them. It was found out that were not of
Native ancestors. In a 19 year battle the Native Americans won the battle and the bones were buried.
We could ve studied the bones to learn more about the place we live in. This issue is important

  • 2. Essay on Magic and Superstition in the Middle Ages Superstitions have influenced the lives of human beings perhaps since the beginning of mankind. For millennia, people have clung to beliefs and practices surrounding preternatural activities. Even after science has produced evidence to explain what was once considered supernatural, the superstitious traditions have continued. During the Middle Ages, many new superstitious rituals were developed and some can still be seen in use today. However, the trivial superstitious rituals of today, such as hanging a horse shoe on a door or knocking on wood to bring good fortune, did not begin so simply. Superstition, as defined by the Oxford dictionary is, excessively credulous belief in and reverence for the supernatural. In no other time was ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Here, the belief shifted from searching for a higher spirituality to having found that elevation in the Incarnate Word, Jesus Christ. This alteration in the philosophical outlook of the people brought about a whole new aspect of the supernatural. Now that there was a great power to believe in, there were sets of rules introduced to ensure pure worship of the new found Incarnate Word. A few centuries later, the renowned Roman Statesman Cassiodorus (485 585AD) would quote the meaning of philosophy in a way that would help characterize the culture of Christendom, which would therefore determine the way for superstitions to transpire throughout the Middle Ages. Cassiodorus said, Philosophy is to be assimilated to God insofar as this is possible for a human being (McGinn 33). Following this impactful clarification, many changes occurred in Christian spirituality. Ancient Christianity was evolving into a new Medieval Christianity . With those changes came the birth of many interesting, sometimes bizarre, superstitions which would affect the lives of many and even contribute to the modification of other religions. Around 1141AD, Hugh of Saint Victor would claim that Magic was not accepted as a part of philosophy, but stands with a false claim outside it ( Chronology of Modern Christianity: Timeline of Witches and Witchcraft ). Magic, evidently, had its own metaphysical classification with its own set ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. The US Economy The United States is currently experiencing a slow recovery from the recession of 2008 09. The current unemployment rate is 7.7%, which is the lowest level since December of 2008 (BLS, 2012). However, this rate is believed to higher than the rate that would occur if the economy was operating at peak efficiency, and it is also believed that there are structural issues still underpinning this performance. For example, the number of Americans who have exited the work force as the result of prolonged unemployment is believed to be higher than usual. In addition, the Congressional Budget Office (CBO, 2012) notes that long term unemployment of greater than 26 weeks is at a much higher rate than normal, which will have adverse long run effects on the economy, since workers with long term unemployment often find their career paths derailed. The current rate of GDP growth, according to the Bureau of Economic Analysis, is 2.7% (for Q3), and it was 1.3% in Q2 of this year. This rate reflects relatively slow growth, with challenges remaining in the domestic market and with sluggishness in Europe suppressing exports to that region. The rate of GDP growth is predicted to slow to a decline of 0.5% between Q4 2012 and Q4 2013, the US re entering recession, according to the Congressional Budget Office s projections. These projections are based on the provisions of the Budget Control Act being enacted, though any observers are doubtful that this will occur. Inflation, the third major ... • 4. The Safety Of Driving And Driving Government interference was first introduced under the automobile industry dating back to the very early 1900s, with a large topic that many people miss when going back into history: the safety of it all. We, the population of today, are given the ability to drive up to 85mph without thinking twice about it, our only focus being on the destination. This is recompensed to the drivers of the twenty first century through the technical advances in firm laws, better drivers education systems, and safer roads and vehicles. On the other hand, this was not the case a century ago, nor were drivers given the same luxury just fifty years ago. As the high end, expensive motorized vehicle for the opulence became cheaper and more common on the streets, danger risks peeked increasingly year after year. As broad as it may seem, there were only two things that caused accidents on the road: lack of education when needed in specific situations and orders to abide by. A century ago, no one thought otherwise when it came to speeding on left turns, drinking and driving, and following the simplest, safest guidelines that includes just wearing a seatbelt, and so this is when the government intervenes. Dating all the way back to 1901, Connecticut was the very first state to enforce a speeding limit on motorized vehicles, an annoying facet of today s roads from the eyes of our speeding parents. This limited the cars to driving 12 mph within the cities and 15 mph along country roads. (History.com ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. On-Campus Garden Persuasive Essay Sustainability is something we talk about a lot. It s taught to kids in elementary and middle schools now, but when I was in primary school it was not heavily focused on. There has been shift in priorities between generations, and I feel that it s very hard to get my generation on board with living in a sustainable manner. I once gave a speech on the importance of recycling that almost put the entire class to sleep. I think this is because my generation does not care, it s not their problem, the idea of the earth not supporting them is not something that has been brought to their doorstep, and in a manner of speaking they are unaware that their actions have negative consequences. My ideas for making the Grand View campus more eco friendly is a three fold process fully incorporated to form a closed loop. First, I believe we should have a(n) on campus garden(s) where students are responsible for caring for crops which could be consumed in the cafeteria or used in a food pantry. ChuckleFish s latest game Stardew Valley has taken the Nostalgia Train and taken a lot of players back to their roots of Sandbox games, Harvest Moon. Almost everyone I ve talked to about this game has at least played some sort of Harvest Moon game being that there have been loads that have come out and still consistently are being released even to this day. However, Stardew Valley has taken us back to the SNES Graphics style and really delivered a Harvest Moon of Today in terms of gameplay. After around 50 hours of Gametime, I have lost myself in this simplistic yet addicting style of gameplay. Every morning I wake up, step out of bed, walk out the door into the vast open world of my farm. I start out the average morning watering crops doing the mundane stuff. I ll clean up the yard should a pine tree step out of its invisible bounds that I ve placed that Mother Nature cannot seem to see, nor understand. However, I can use the extra wood and sap for crafting. Stardew Valley boasts a comprehensive crafting system. It fails in depth to Minecraft, though there is a lot to be made, and will make life on the farm a whole lot easier. Back when this play actually happened on the exact date of July 21, 1925, in America, it was illegal to teach public schools about Darwin s theory of evolution. Planets are kept in their orbit around a star rather than falling into the star due to gravity and their velocity. In Earth s case, the pull of the sun s gravity and Earth s velocity keeps it orbiting around the sun. The planets are traveling at a velocity that is perpendicular to the star they are orbiting. Therefore, if the star (sun) was not pulling them in using gravity, the planets would simply continue in a straight line. This particular form of popular culture is the National Hockey League or the professional ice hockey sport. This is an important topic to examine, because these are multi million dollar (in some cases billion dollar) organizations/franchises where lots of revenue is made daily, affecting the North American economy greatly. Although some teams are worth much more then others, how well the team performs doesn t directly affect the teams overall worth, rather time spent in the league, and location of each given team act as the biggest factors. Many in Western Society seem to be unaware of the contemporary slavery still plaguing many developing countries, particularly involving children. The 2010 documentary film called The Dark Side of Chocolate explored the modern day slavery that is occurring within many West African countries, where children are being exploited and trafficked in order to harvest chocolate. In fact, the United States Department of State estimates that approximately 109,000 children in the Ivory Coast s cocoa industry work under the worst forms of child labor (Mustapha, 2010, p.3). By exploring the use of child labor in the chocolate industry in West Africa, this paper will present the argument where I will argue that the unethical use of child labor has led to impoverished families, negative health impacts among children, and has affected economies in West Africa. In order to overcome this situation, there is a need for enforced policies, government action, and corporations taking accountability in order to put an end to child labor. Aristotle and Plato were philosophers who lived in Athens, Greece who critically studied matters of human life, political rule, human nature, and therefore wrote on the subjects. Plato s ideals are theoretically based and although Aristotle was one of his students his thoughts and ideas are more practical and biologically orientated than Plato s ideals. Although Plato and Aristotle have similar ideas on ideal human life and political regime there approach on both is distinct, since Aristotle focuses more on developmental and practical forms of life and Plato strives to proclaim the ideal forms although they may be unattainable. When the interrogator questioned her age and means of personal finance, she did not state her age but did say that she was a widow and lived with her son on his farm but did perform healings when needed. She was then questioned about her education and religious practices. She responded by saying she had learned how to heal people from observing her mother. Also, she testified that she knew the commandments but had not been to the table of the Lord or the Holy Communion in two years (15). It did not help that she was not looked up to in the community but was part of the lower class. • 28. A Collective Identity Of Europe Post war European nations were faced with the task of restructuring their states after the devastating war. A collective agreement was made for a political body to help stabilize much of Europe. The Community provided external political structure that would provide the means necessary to create a stable economy and develop technologies, but in order to do so there would need to be a collective identity of Europe. As nation states were trying to redefine their history and assert their independence it became a delicate balance between maintaining their own identity and joining in the Community that would impose new regulation but also provide the resources necessary to rebuild economically. The benefit was that nation states could now have their own domestic economy and still benefit from the advancing international markets that were more accessible. However, economics cannot be viewed as an independent unit. How the market works is inadvertently based on a cultural set of ideals and markets can function differently from state to state. In order to formalize an institution to control the economy new regulations must be set in place. In the sense of the European Community all nations states had to join together to create a set of rules that everyone agreed upon. By abiding by new rules nations in return could expect to benefit from a larger political body. This all sounded very promising, a new and stronger institution would regulate the economy, and provide security for the vulnerable post war nations. In doing so, Europe would create a collective identity, a sense of nationality. Although after the war the idea of a stronger unified economy sounded promising it could also be viewed as a hindrance in the long term. The European Community s goal was to create a unification of the nation states but from the viewpoint of a individual state this could be a loss of independence and identity. This communal identity made western European states resemble each other much more than they resembled those of other places or other times. The focus was no longer on ... To her horror, the Elizabeth in the poem discovers that she is an I and one of them (PPL150). This thought, which is precipitated by numerous things, especially Aunt Consuelo s oh! and the horrifying breast of the women in the waiting room s copy National Geographic, plunges her into despair about society s order (PPL 149). In a way, this poem expresses both the awakening of oneself as a person and the awakening to their sexuality. Elizabeth is terrified of things that are associated with women, breast, a cry of pain, and as such she is forced to realize that she is a woman as well and, potentially, has the same fate as them. ... Ostriker encourages the readers not to be shy as Bishop both yearns for and fears the erotic, experiences it as actual or potential pain, and produces screens to disguise the experience (241). These early works and their position on her childhood provide insight into Bishop s life, especially of her love of women, despite being indirectly about her sexuality. As such, these hidden ideas in her poems should be explored by the readers because it helps us to better understand her. The poems Bishop had published later in life, namely Insomnia, The Shampoo, One Art, and finally Sonnet, deal more with her reluctance to expose her sexuality than discovering it as she does in these earlier poems. Of the fourpoems listed above, Insomnia is the most concealed in terms of sexuality. Without proper insider knowledge, this poem could easily be overlooked, but its use of the term inverted signals to people that she is talking about her lesbian identity (PPL 54). Without the in group knowledge, Bishop can hide her discussion of sexuality in this poem which is otherwise freely discussed. The last stanza imagines the world inverted where you love me and ultimately states that Bishop wants a world like this (PPL 54). Francesca discloses that she was not shy of expressing her feelings towards Paolo, who she loved even though she was married to his brother. One day, she reveals, her husband caught them together inside her bedroom and was sure that they were lovers. Francesca opened the door and pretended that all was well before her husband. Unknown to Francesca, Paolo had got stuck in a ladder as he attempted to run away. Gianciotto then killed the two of them, although he had not intended to kill his wife. The circumstance that led to her death is an emphasis of the beauty of love. When Gianciotto jumped to slay Paolo with his sword, Francesca rushed in between and faced the death first. The husband was too disappointed and ended up killing Paolo as well. The portrayal of the two characters as lovebirds and the lack of love between Francesca and her husband show the reality that was then (Alighieri, 1013). Different companies observe it from published annual accounts of various Indian companies that there are divergent accounting practices for the same transaction. This in effect is defeating the comparability of financial statements. This phenomenon hinders the valuation and consequently the decision making process. * To overcome these problems, harmonization of accounting standards has already been started. The art of tattoo was brought to New Zealand by the Polynesians when they migrated to New Zealand. Men of the tribe are more elaborately tattooed than the women. The women receive their tattoos also through achievement and hereditary claim, but to a lesser extent. Examples of these are tattoos on the nose, which represent sevants, or tattoos on the back of the legs that represent that the woman has married outside of her tribe. Genital tattoos protect the woman and her children of future hereditary claim. Meetinghouses were of great importance to all tribes across New Zealand. These houses were the symbol of the past for the tribe. They were the most elaborately decorated houses in the village. If another house were to be more beautiful, it would be an insult to the tribe. Why do we act the way we do? Does the mass media really affect the way a people in a society behave? Sociologists focus on the environment and the social aspects of human behaviour in order to answer questions like these when studying a particular society. A society is defined as a large social group that shares the same geographical territory and is governed by the same political authority and cultural expectations. The main principle of functionalism is that each part of a society is interdependent and contributes towards making society work as a whole. Each of these parts has to be working correctly but if something does go wrong then society has mechanisms to deal with them, such as the police and the legal system. Functionalists also believe that every social institution has many important functions to perform (Burton, 2013, online). Durkheim introduced the theory anomie , or lack of social norms , that could cause instability or chaos. This concept bought to light many instances that could affect a society in a negative way and especially the behaviour of individuals towards one another (Emile Durkheim org, 2013, online). Another concept put forward by Durkheim the sum of all of its parts is larger than the whole , defined at the introduction of the structural/functionalist theory, is as relevant today as it was when first introduced (Gamble, 2008, Online). Robert K. This form of strategic protectionism enables industries seeking to grow to enjoy the benefits of first mover advantages, a concept of specialising in producing and exporting only those goods and services which it can produce more efficiently (Investopedia) and the benefits of economies of scales. A prime example of this is Amazon, the first online bookstore. By gaining the first mover advantage into the markets, it has gained and maintained dominance over many firms.
