Determining the Water Potential of Potato Cells
EXERCISE 1C: Determining the Water Potential of Potato Cells
Introduction: Water potential was defined above as an expression of the tendency of water to diffuse
from one region to another. Water potential is a numerical value that must be determined for a given
temperature and pressure. In this exercise you will determine the water potential of potato cells at
room temperature and ambient pressure by placing cores of potato tissue in sucrose solutions of
different concentrations and measuring the net movement of water in each case. In animal cells,
movement of H2O into and out of a cell is influenced by the relative concentration of solute on either
side of the cell membrane. If water moves out of the cell, the cell will shrink or ... Show more content

We will assume, for purposes of explanation, that the solute is not diffusing (Figure 1 .2a). The
movement of water into the cell causes the cell to swell, and the cell membrane pushes against the cell
wall to produce an increase in pressure (turgor).
Figure 1.2a
Before
Pure Water
(p= 0; ((= 0; ( = 0
(p= 0; ((= 3; ( = 3
Figure 1.2b
After
Pure Water
(p= 0; ((= 0; ( = 0
(p= +3; ((= 3; ( = 0
As water continues to diffuse into the cell, the rising positive turgor pressure begins to cancel out the
negative osmotic potential of the cell. This process will continue until the positive turgor pressure is so
large it completely cancels the negative osmotic potential, and the water potential of the cell = 0 = ( of
pure water. At this point, a dynamic equilibrium is reached, and net water movement will cease
(Figure 1.2b). Now imagine starting over with a fresh piece of potato in a beaker of distilled water.
The potato has a water potential of 2.3 bars, as in the above example. If you add solute to the water
outside the potato cells, the water potential of the solution surrounding the cells will decrease. It is
possible to add just enough solute to the water so that the water potential outside the cell is the same
as the water

The Possession of Roland Doe
Levitating beds, loss of memory for long periods of time, loss of bladder control, speaking in tongues,
these are all symptoms known to be associated with possession. A possession is having control or
owning (Farlex). When a person is possessed they have no control over their feelings or actions a
majority of the time. The reason it is called a possession is because, when one is possessed, the spirit
or demon has control over that person. The possession and exorcism of Roland Doe is one of the most
documented possessions in history. Many still believe the case as fictional, but there is significant
evidence of Doe s possession. The exorcism of Roland Doe was an unusual and frightening
experience. The movie, The Exorcism, is a movie ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Roland s behavior could not be medically explained, excerpts straight from Father Gallagher s diary,

information. It is apparent by reading Opsasnick s work that he put in a great deal of hours research in
Roland Doe s possession.

Ozone Depletion And Its Negative Effects On Aquatic Skin
Ozone Depletion and Its Negative Effects on Aquatic Skin
The Ozone is made up of three oxygen molecule joint together by covalent bond (O3) which is mostly
found in the stratosphere of the Earth. Although it is a poisonous gas, it is important in many ways for
human as well as other aquatic and terrestrial animals. But due to the large emission of the halogens
and CFCs ozone is being depleted rapidly (Vermishev and Danilov Danilyan 360 361). The enormous
disadvantage of the ozone layer depletion is the inability of the earth s atmosphere to filter the UV
(Ultra Violate) rays emitted by the sun and actually which has created a various problems such as the
negative effects on the terrestrial and aquatic skin.
UV ray is that with low wavelength and high frequency. High frequency rays carry high amounts of
energy. High energy rays are capable of changing the DNA in molecular level. Aquatic organisms are
at higher risk of damage from UV ray the skins of aquatic organisms are just not restricted to one
function. The various harmful rays emitted as a result of barbaric human activities have resulted in
ozone depletion causing the UV ray to enter through the stratosphere and causes several diseases such
as sunburn, cancer in aquatic animals, changes in DNA structure leading to the skin mutations,
unusual changes in the sebaceous glands, salt gland, and other several glands.
Some of the organisms are reported to have the skin cancer when exposed to the high frequency UV
ray. An

The Six Barriers To Effective Communication
The six major barriers to effective communication are as listed below
(i) Cliche
(ii) Jargon
(iii) Slang
(iv) Sexist and Racist language
(v) Euphemisms
(vi) Doublespeak
A cliche is a phrase or a word which was previously considered clever, but due to the passage of time
and overuse has lost its original meaning (McLean, 2010). An example is, the writing is on the wall
and some fools may fail to read and understand while the signal is made . The sentence seems
straightforward, but some receivers of information may start gazing at the wall reading whatever they
find there thereby failing to get the intended meaning. I gave a short speech to my staff a few years
ago where I said the following, I need all of you be as fast as a rabbit and bring in many customers to
our business . I was shocked when one member of staff stood up and walked out of the meeting
hurriedly. I sent one of the staff to inquire whether there was something wrong only to be told that he
was rushing to get the customers to come to the meeting.
The second barrier to communication is the use of jargon. These are the words or terminologies which
are common within a specific profession but quite unfamiliar to the clients who use the products. In a
marketing set up, the marketer may do well to avoid such jargon while concentrating on what is
common in the realms of the customer so that emphasis is laid on the benefits and usefulness of the
goods or services. An example is the use of the word, one

1940 Tacoma Narrows Bridge
The Tacoma Narrows Bridge was designed for a wind speed of 100 miles per hour and a static wind
pressure of 30 pounds force per square foot but unfortunately the bridge failed at a wind speed of less
than half and a static wind pressure of one sixth (Delatte, 2009). This phenomenon raises a big
question mark on how this is possible. At first, resonance was suspected to be the main cause of the
bridge failure (The New York Times, 1940). After some proper research and thorough investigations
by engineers, they came up with several theories on how did the bridge collapse. The primary cause of
the collapse lies in the general proportions of the bridge and the type of stiffening girders and floor.
The ratio of the width of the bridge to the length of the main span was so much smaller and the
vertical stiffness was so much less than those of previously constructed bridges that ... Show more

Ammann, Theodore von Karman, and Glenn B. Woodruff to investigate the case of the 1940 Tacoma
Bridge collapse (Scott, 2001). Theodore von Karman, a famous aeronautical engineer, claimed that the
motion that was seen on the day when the bridge was brought into pieces was due to vortices. When
an air flow passes a bluff body, it created the periodic shedding of air vortices, which created the von
Karman Vortex Street (Delatte, 2009). As a consequence, the bridge would move towards the low
pressure zone, in a wavering development called vortex induced vibration. On the off chance that the
recurrence of vortex shedding matches the regular recurrence of the scaffold, then the structure
reverberates and motions may get to be distinctly self maintaining. This wake reinforced the
oscillations that were present and caused the centre span to violently twist until the bridge collapsed
(Von Kármán, 1963). Experimental results that was deduced in a 1942 report confirms that the
motions were a result of vortex shedding (Farquharson,

Carpal Tunnel Release Research Paper
Carpal Tunnel Release
Carpal tunnel release is a surgical procedure to relieve numbness and pain in your hand caused by
carpal tunnel syndrome.
Your carpal tunnel is a narrow, hollow space in your wrist. It passes between your wrist bones and a
band of connective tissue (transverse carpal ligament). The nerve that supplies most of your hand
(median nerve) passes through this space. So do the connections between your fingers and the muscles
of your arm (tendons). Carpal tunnel syndrome makes this space swell and narrow, causing pain and
numbness.
In carpal tunnel release surgery, a surgeon cuts through the transverse carpal tunnel ligament to make
more room in the carpal tunnel space. You may have this surgery if other types of treatment have not

Ask your health care provider about: o Changing or stopping your regular medicines. This is
especially important if you are taking diabetes medicines or blood thinners. o Taking medicines such
as aspirin and ibuprofen. These medicines can thin your blood.
Do not take these medicines before your procedure if your health care provider instructs you not to.
Carpal tunnel release may be done using: o Numbing medicine injected directly into your wrist area
(local anesthesia). You may also get medication through an intravenous line (IV) to make you sleepy
and relaxed (sedation). o Medication to make you sleep during the procedure (general anesthesia). If
you will have general anesthesia, do not eat or drink anything for 6 8 hours before surgery.

Similarities Between Antigone And Trifles
The word tragedy is defined as a play which deals with tragic events that ends in an unpredictable
way. The ending is horrific because it displays the destruction of the protagonist, this leaves the
audience with such a bad feeling. In the early 6th century, ancient Greek s created the concept of
theatre that still highly influences modern day one act plays. Tragedy and other forms of plays are still
very commonly used today and might not be of existence if it wasn t for the ancient Greek s. When
looking at the Ancient Greek play, Antigone by Sophocles compared to the modern day one act play
Trifles by Susan Glaspell, the audience begins to understand the influence that ancient Greek tragedy
has on one act plays today. Some comparisons ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
While the main character in Antigone is doing what she feels is right by burying her brother and
giving him a proper funeral, the main character in Trifles is simply helping cover up a murder that her
neighbor committed because she can relate to the physical and emotional abuse that she had
experienced. While in both instances the characters are breaking the law, but in their eyes they are
doing it for good reason. Spectators may argue the similarities in structure when it comes to crisis and
resolution in comparing both plays. In both cases the main character has to come to an understanding
that there is a crisis and make a personal decision on how they should resolve that situation. There
they lie, the dead upon the dead. So he has won the pitiful fulfillment of his marriage within death s
house (Antigone 1244). Both story s end in a catastrophic manner, while Antigone was a much more
dramatic ending, Trifles is similar to a Greek tragedy play in the manner that both end unpredictably.
Appreciation of Greek tragedy lay in its acceptance as an exciting and viable art form for the
contemporary stage, and thus Sophocles Oedipus gained acceptance as a powerful and dramatic script
in the 1920 s ... among the genres of theatre, Greek tragedy dominated the stage (Hartigan 25). This
proves that in modern day, ancient Greek tragedy still plays an effect on how we format and construct
the plot of our modernized one act

Compare and Contrast a Technical Approach to Innovation
Innovation has traditionally been seen as technical issue concerned only with machinery and systems.
Compare and contrast this technical approach to innovation with the more knowledge centred
approaches discussed on this course. Your answer should draw upon case study evidence to critically
assess the value of the two approaches.
Innovation is a key element of modern business. In a world full of modern industrialised nations it is
essential for big business to innovate. Ed Rhodes and David Wield identify innovation as; the
implementation of new technologies (Rhodes, E, 1994, page 79) for a firm to rise above its adversaries
and create brand loyalty innovation is key. There are two fields of innovation, Ed Rhodes highlighted

Innovation follows science (Chris Land, 2006, Lecture 2) scientific discoveries since the spinning
jenny in the industrial revolution have changed the way our industries operate. There are many fields
of science; the typical view of science is technological, biological, chemical, and physically
orientated; i.e. science is tangible and therefore the widely known view of innovations relates to these
tangible sciences; dyson vacuum cleaners, the spinning jenny; both technological innovations. Today,
there are intangible sciences such as the science of Management, where new theories and innovations
on how to motivate the workforce, organise strategies, market strategies and the management of
strategic core competencies have revolutionised the industry. Knowledge innovation is creativity and
logic put to strategies of how to go about doing things, opposed to technical innovation as creativity
and logic put to the research and development of a new product. James Dyson said about innovation,
It s the unlikely juxtaposition of creativity and logic which causes the wooliness and confusion around
the term innovation . (James Dyson, Ingenia, Issue 24, 2005, page 32)
(Chris Land, 2006, Lecture 2)
To what does knowledge innovation refer to? There are two perspectives as to how to perceive
knowledge; structuralist and process

The Federal Budget Deficit And National Debt
The Federal Budget Deficit and National Debt Basically, what the federal budget deficit is a shortage
of funds that are available for the government, where more money is being spent than what the
government receives. But, national is where the government borrows money through various ways.
The data for national debt and federal budget deficit from the year 2001 2013 is given in the chart
above. As we can see in the graph, the deficit is still remains in our economy even though there had
been a surplus in 1999 to 2001. But, we could see a lot if decreases such as from the year 2004 2007,
2009 2010 and also from 201 2014, but generally the deficit kept increasing yearly. The data provided
is in trillions and a positive value means ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
From the graph above, for instance, we could say that the budget deficit increased rapidly from 2007
2009 and we could say that the main is due to the Great Recession. The governments act trying to
counter attack this effect by improving fiscal policy for the betterment of business cycle lead to more
outlay than revenue, which resulted in the increase of the deficit promptly. So, therefore borrowing the
money to deal with deficit lead to increase in the national debt. Crowding out occurs when spending
by an individual or an organisation or to be more precise, private spending decreases and by
increasing the government spending. People sometimes use this as an alternative replacement and lets
the government to spend more. This is a very big problem causer because as the government decided
to spend more, it leads to higher budget deficit and debt and the overall spending may decline rapidly.
So, therefore if they let the government to spend more instead of them it results to the lesser
consumption of resources and spending on it. This can lead to decreasing the interest rates which
results in less investment by people and major drop in the business sector. In order to shift the
economy up from the times and effect of the great recession, government tend to raise the budgets at
times, government give more outlays in the form of social security and other fiscal policy techniques.
As a result, the government borrows capital to pay for this,

Fitzgerald s Use of Language in The Great Gatsby Essay
In the novel The Great Gatsby, Fitzgerald uses tone, diction, syntax and imagery to voice Nick s
perception of the world around him. In this passage his use of language is used repetitively to convey
Jordan Baker, Daisy and Tom Buchanan s lives. On the outside it may look like they all are living a
perfect and ideal life, however Fitzgerald s illuminating use of language highlights how far from
perfect their lives truly are. When he first walks in Nick judges Tom and Daisy s lives based on the
appearance of the house, perfect and romanticized, yet he soon learns that this first impression is an
overstatement. Nick s use of diction such as fragilely bound (12) and French windows (12) connote

overpowering demeanor hides his actual self, he has a strong aura around him which suggests his

the color white. Nick states white in two different meanings, at the beginning of the passage ?white? is
used to reflect elegance and purity but as Nick spends more time the ?white? in the house he learns
that the color symbolizes the stereotypical façade that every character is hiding behind, a dull,
vacuous, and bland guise. Fitzgerald uses white to express the many personalities, such as those of
Daisy and Jordan. Interestingly, the white appearance would imply purity and innocence, which are,
unfortunately, words that can not be remotely associated with either one. They can?t be associated
with Daisy and Jordan because they both are the exact opposite of purity and innocence. Daisy is
purely corrupted by money and society, her ?absurd, charming little laugh? (13) connotes her
fakeness. Nick views Jordan as an arrogant and proud woman, he sees her as someone who?s trying to
exude her independence, however she seems insubstantial. When describing Daisy, Nick uses the
word ?bright? (13 14) repetitively to suggest her flashy personality, like Tom she too has an aura
around her that make people, especially men, drawn towards her almost like a siren. With

Bottoms V. Bottom Case Summary
There is no lack of discrimination in the world today. In 1993, the situation was even worse. LGBT
discrimination was one of the worst. The Supreme Court case Bottoms v. Bottoms is an excellent
example of that. This case features a child custody dispute between a lesbian mother and a
homophobic grandmother on the basis of the mother s sexuality. Why is the fitness of a mother not
being determined by her actions but by her sexuality? This case changed the views of how
homosexual mothers and fathers should be judged as parents and their capabilities. As a result of this
case, a mother ended up childless and an entire community was hurt by this judges ruling. 1993 had
very different societal views than 2017. Laws protecting LGBT people were ... Show more content on

During this time, the court took many testimonies from many people, including Tyler s father, Dennis

and how them being in a homosexual relationship would physically and emotionally affect Tyler. It
was found that a person s sexual orientation does not bear a relation to that person s fitness as a parent.
(McHugh et al. n.p.) It is also stated that many children do not encounter harassment for having
homosexual parents. If any harassment occur, it tends to be harmless verbal teasing. (McHugh et al.

have viewed the homosexual as a mentally ill person or as a child molester, (Ronner 343) when in
actuality being raised by a homosexual couple does not have any emotional differences then if the

The Count of Monte Cristo is a movie based off of the book written by Alexandre Dumas and directed

entertainment purposes. There are various events throughout the movie that include historical
references, however it is a very minor aspect of the movie. The historical references in the movie do
not intend to create a real story as a history textbook would. They are there to add an interesting
finesse to the story without straying away from the main plot. One of these major historical references

It was never created to follow an exact event in the past, but was more created as a fictional plot with
historical aspects to it. Many would criticize the movie because of its lack of accurately portraying the
time period and following historical events, however I believe that it did a good job of throwing in
historical sites throughout the movie. The movie also has references to common problems that
everyday people face, regardless of the time they are from or where they live. For example, Fernand
Montego played by Guy Pearce is a jealous best friend who purposely sabotages Edmond and gets
him thrown into prison. This is all just so he could get his girl and feel better about himself. This
problem is very similar to problems people deal with every day. People are constantly caught up in
jealousy, which causes them to do horrible things such as betraying their lifetime best friend. Another
major theme in the story that is seen in every day life is revenge. Edmond gets so caught up in giving
all those that crossed him what they deserved that he nearly loses the woman he loves and his best
friend. This is something that people get involved in all the time in todays world. We get so caught up
in giving others what we think they deserve that we almost lose those who are closest to us. One
minor thing that stood out to me

He certainly does not mean anything positive. The following two lines ( What about all the peace/That

this is differentiated by blossoming fields and dreams, yet in reality is it shown that it was a vague
memory. This is restated in the fourth stanza: I used to dream/I used to glance beyond the stars. This is
once again another metaphorical term: to look past the stars implies high desire and standards. Be that
as it may, it can likewise be taken literally. Jackson further says that Now I don t know where we
are/Although I know drifted far. This references the disorientation that has occurred and the loss of
connection between us and nature. Jackson is trying to represent that most cities are not able to see
true stars as they are hidden by artificial lights (road lights and so forth.). Continuing on into the song,
he clarifies that there must be a correct way, an answer. This correct way is his hopeful vision of a
world without war, bad form, and mischief, a world in which we treat everything and everybody with

Graduation Test Persuasive Speech
We all hate to see people that were close to not get to graduate or walk the stage! Graduation test

students are pressured by graduation test. For example, students might not focus on their grades their
senior year because they are so worried about studying for their graduation test. People should read
this because it gives everyone and understanding of how kids think due to the fact I m a child myself.
People should also read this because one day a change can occur for the future kids who have to take

people feel low of themselves if they fail. Sleeplessness, loss of self esteem secondary to poor
performance and lifelong mental blocks can be seen in individual children. Parents, fatigued from the
endless hours and days of testing, are increasingly frustrated. And with mounting pressure to perform
being directly correlated to job security, teachers have succumbed to this pressure and changed their
approach in the classroom: . Many students do not have a fair opportunity to learn the material on the
test because they attend poorly funded schools with large class sizes, too many teachers without
subject area certification, and inadequate books, libraries, laboratories, computers and other facilities.
These students are usually from low income families, and many also suffer problems with housing,
nutrition or health care. High stakes tests punish them for things they cannot control. . Schools can use
the survey results, she said, to determine whether they need to increase counseling, career training or
college preparation services, or if they have them in place already, what they can do to increase the
number of students they reach .

Denial in The Iceman Cometh Essay
Denial in The Iceman Cometh Denial is the refusal to admit the truth. It is the refusal to accept or

The Effect Barbary Pirates Had on the History of America
The effect Barbary Pirates had on the history of America
Algeria, Morocco, Libya, Tunisia; The current day names for the land of which the Barbary Pirates
had once inhabited. These Barbary States would extort the world of their men and their cargo through
plundering of naval ships. In the same time period there was a newly discovered land, which was
striving to mature into an independent country. This land was known as America, and they were
rigorously tearing apart from their homeland, England. Once the United States declared independence,
British diplomats were quick to inform the Barbary States that U.S. ships were open to attack. In 1785
(PA). The United States did not enjoy paying off the pirates, so they took it to their own hands to stop
this problem once and for all. The defeat of the Barbary States, by Americans helped the naval
security, a huge amount in the future of the Land of the Free , and allowed for lots of fighting

From 1786 to 1815, the United States made tribute payments to the North African Barbary states to
protect its shipping from pirate raids (Kearney F, Barbary pirates ). This ended when Jefferson was
elected into presidency. He had been against the tribute of the Barbary States his whole life in office,
and so when he was elected, he stopped paying tribute and refused to pay a ransom for many goods

declared, and Jefferson had a blockade

discussing all the major aspects of the disorder and also explain some of the history behind common
beliefs about the disorder.
There are various symptoms to this disorder, which include:
Multiple mannerisms, which do not relate to each other
Hearing voices of different personalities in their minds
Panic attacks that are frequent
Flashbacks to traumas
Hallucinations

Essay The Everglades
The Everglades
On May 30, 1934, an Act was passed, which authorized a park to be created through public donations.
Thirteen years later, through a combination of private, state and federal lands, an expansive wetland
was hopefully immortalized as a national park. Everglades was the first national park that was
preserved primarily for its biota, in lieu of scenic or historic values.
Shortly after moving to Miami in 1925, Ernest F. Coe, made the Everglades Park project his life work.
In 1927, Coe, along with a few others, formed the Tropical Everglades Park Association (TENPA),
which concentrated its activities on the creation of a national park in south Florida. By 1928, the

Houston s A Blizzard Under Blue Sky explores and exhibits the idea of psycho physical experience of

This all seems quite characteristic of a depressed mind to loathe what is around and be enchanted by
the mystic power of solitude away from the petty human world. While the protagonist decides on
winter camping despite the knowledge of the unforgiving freezing temperature there, the warning of
her housemate and disaster tales of winter camping fatalities (187), one is sceptic if she has made up
her mind out of love for nature.
Yet, the detailing of the protagonist s expedition leaves one wishing for a similar adventure. The
narrator s company of her two best friends, her dogs: Jackson and Hailey, seems to carry a special
significance for her. Their personification and the treatment as developing characters must have some
symbolic representation of the protagonist s personality that has been split now. The male figure
Jackson is an oversized sheepdog and something else that is tireless, adventurous and leader like while
the female figure Hailey is not so graceful , is in constant indecision as she runs and stays behind the
[protagonist] as they ski (185). While Jackson encourages the narrator to ski harder, go faster, climb
higher , she has to mediate between him and reluctant, groaning Hailey to find an agreement. In a
symbolic level, perhaps, Houston wants the readers to see the protagonist as an embodiment of three
distinct dispositions: conscience, optimism and depression. While the protagonist herself represents
her conscience, this

What Is Constantly Introspective
Constantly introspective my practice is a series of contradictions concerning text, the public and the
private, personal histories, concrete poetry, and material fixations. Torn between concealing and
revealing, my practice is trapped in a permanent state of vulnerability with slivers of personal
assurance allowing confronting texts to be read and interpreted by viewers. In an attempt to transform
my flat two dimensional writings into tangible objects I have started to approach different materials

This country was founded by immigrants and is known for its population from a wide array of cultural
backgrounds. Living in a westernized society that is so diverse, we are forced to choose an identity for
ourselves at one point or another in our lives. Some choose to identify by their outer qualities, while
others may identify by their inner qualities. One may identify by their looks, gender, sexuality,
political views, or their beliefs. Some may have an identity that is dynamic and ever changing

According to Saenz, our identities are shaped by our surroundings. He describes a student: He did not
produce himself. He is a product. And the word product here should not be confused with victim.
Though we may all occupy different positions in the material world, we are all products of the
cumulative discourse around us (Saenz 71). We are products of our environment, and the course each
of us takes in life is dependent on how we allow the discourse to shape us and our beliefs. Choosing
an identity is necessary, and many of us are forced to have more than one identity. We have an identity
that we choose, a private identity, and are forced to also have a public identity. Our public identity is
shaped by politics and our cultural surroundings. According to Saenz, the West s obsession began with
Plato and Aristotle and was extended by (among others) Thomas Aquinas, Augustine, Descartes,
Locke, Hume, Heidegger and Marx (75). This obsession with political identity continues into present
day and the West s obsession has a great impact on our public identity. Our public identity is not one
that we may necessarily choose, but rather is forced upon us by others. While some say we are all the
same. We all love, we all hate, we all dream, we all will die. We feel. We all feel (73). There is so little

Persuasive Essay On Fire Vivals
It s the New Year season again and fireworks displays are everywhere. BBC reported that some 10,000
fireworks lit up the sky around the London Eye, welcoming 2018. Fireworks displays are, perhaps
inarguably, a beautiful way to light up the skies in anticipation for the new year but for birds, it s
nothing short of a terror attack.
Forbes contributor GrrlScientist wrote in 2015 about how panic stricken birds reached altitudes of 500
meters, flying en masse as they flee from the flashing lights and crashing explosions of fireworks.
Judy Shamoun Baranes, a researcher on the en masse fleeing of birds due to New Year s Eve
fireworks, compared the panic stricken birds flight altitudes to those observed from migrating birds.
Like humans, birds cannot see very well in the dark, GrrlScientist wrote. [Panicked] wild birds will
crash into power lines, automobiles, buildings, trees, and even each other, especially on cloudy or
moonless nights.
Comparing it to humans in a stampede, GrrlScientist reported that mid air bird collisions can result in
serious injuries or death because they would fall from the sky upon impact, rendering an otherwise
survivable injury into death.
In the 2011 New Year s Eve, more than 5,000 red winged blackbirds rained down on Beebe, Arkansas.

Commission revealed acute physical trauma in the dead birds, prompting conservationists to theorize

Reflection Paper On Transparency
Two items from this week s readings jumped out at me, and although they may not be the most
important , they were two things that made me pause and reflect on our current task at my school. I
know that much of this class is focusing on quality in higher education, but the parallels with K 12 are
almost constant. I m always looking for takeaways that can help me in my position and this week the
topic of transparency and staying to one s own story resonated with me. In both supplemental
readings, the need for transparency in all areas of the accreditation process was stated as being
necessary. Crow (2009) identifies a list of areas of concerns that need to be addressed for regional
accreditation to be considered viable, valued, and credible. The second area he identifies is, ...all
accrediting agencies will have to raise the veil of confidentiality and secrecy (p.89). There s no
quicker way to create a culture of distrust, than to try and hide something from stakeholders. It is
always better to disclose something negative and deal with the consequences in an open, honest
manner than to try and hide it and have it discovered later. Crow (2009) also states, ...it is conceivable
that greater transparency about the evaluators and their findings will contribute to greater public
confidence in their work (p.95). If everyone is aware of what is taking place and what a school is
working on to become better in the long run, the accreditation process has much more

How Did Technological Developments Affect The Evolution Of...
1. How did technological developments affect the evolution of jazz? Jazz as we know it has existed for
over a century, with its roots stemming from the low tech history of the slave fields, and European
classical music. Throughout the 20th century, however, new advancements in technology would
change music forever, and Jazz is no exception. As technology advanced, so too did complex
compositions of the artists, and even our definition of music as a whole. The first innovation which
revolutionized Jazz was Thomas Edison s phonograph, the first device capable of recording and
reproducing sound. As musicians previously learned through reading sheet music, it was impossible to
discern the variations in tone and improvisation from a musical work. The phonograph was
revolutionary for its time, as musicians could now learn through listening to details within the music.
The device also helped transform Jazz to a national genre, as the advent of recording allowed one
musician to listen to the works of another from afar.
Early recording companies such as Columbia and the Victor Talking Machine Company sprang up as a
result of this invention. Though the later disc record phonographs (also known as gramophones ) won
the format war against Edison s cylindrical phonograph, Edison himself began the chain of innovation.
If not for the phonograph, the Original Dixieland Jazz Band would not have recorded their first
composition. Consequently, no later Jazz recordings would be

Restorative Justice Case Study
Introduction
Over the course of both my undergraduate and master s programs in Negotiation, Conflict Resolution,
and Peacebuilding (NCRP), I have wanted to further study the concept of Restorative Justice. Though
it has surfaced several times throughout my NCRP coursework, it has mostly been in the context of
international conflict. Thus, I have often wondered how Restorative Justice might work in a more
local context. That local context revealed itself in my current role as one of two fathers of a first
grader in a school in Long Beach. Helena, our six year old daughter, attends a small private school
with 160 students in grades K 8. The school community regards itself as being a large, caring, tight
knit extended family, while the administration has been explicit in stating that the incidence of
bullying on the campus is little to none. Our experience as a family in the nearly two years that we
have been part of the community has been otherwise. Here are three bullying scenarios that we ve
experienced or heard of occurring in our school community:
In our first year, two male classmates called our daughter fat when she was in Kindergarten.
Later that same year, a female classmate teased another dark skinned, African American girl in her
class for having ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Benefits Of Private School Education
How important is it for you to provide this for underprivileged students?
It s huge for me to help all kids, kids are our future if we give them all the tools they can do anything
they want in this world. For me, it s trying to put kids in the right situation, and give them the
opportunity to succeed in whatever field they choose.
Did you have many educational experiences such as the one that you re currently providing growing
up in SC?
I went to a private high school, my parents received help from a lot of anonymous donors that I m
truly grateful for. It s cool that I m in the position to help kids do the same thing that was given to me.
How was the educational system for you growing up before you went to private school?
It was rough, I went to public school up into seventh grade my parents felt like private school was
going to help me be a better leader so they stressed a private school education. It was a dramatic
change for me, but I needed it for college, and for after college.
What s the difference between Public and Private School?
It was different, in Public school you have everyone from your neighborhood, and the surrounding
neighborhoods, it was fun, but going to private school is different, you have all these types of kids
from all over Charleston that were all about their education. It was a huge change for me and it took
me a while to adjust, but looking back it was the best decision that I made.

Essay Robert Altmans Nashville
Nashville Essay
Robert Altman s movie Nashville is based on the political, social, and personal problems that our
country has to deal with. These problems are rooted in the battle between the need to create some false
image of success and the need for truth which is the struggle that exists in every character of this film
(except Jeff Goldbloom). To show this Robert Altman takes us through Nashville s Country Music
using political commentary, music and realistically portrayed dialogue to tell the story.
Altman portrayed politics as sort of a parasite feeding off of the Nashville dream. He used acousmatic
sound in two ways to portray these parasitic politics. The first way is the use of the Hall Walker van
which was an almost a surreal ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Altman also uses dialogue in a similar manor. The nature of dialogue itself is solely for creating and
upholding the self image of the Nashville Star weather you are one or not. The conversations never get
passed the surface issues, and no one ever speaks their mind unless it s safe. But, the reality of each
character is very real and deep due to the way the dialogue was set up. Most of the people were
frivolous so in order to add some depth and reveal their true character Altman had to make the
dialogue as realistic as possible. The dialogue seemed almost unrehearsed or not planned at all which
gives it its reality. The most odious example of this is when the Hal Walker representative is arguing
about the political sign with Barbra Gene s husband at Centennial Park. He slips on his line in the heat
of the argument. I don t know if this was intentional or not, but I think they chose to keep it in the
movie because it seemed to be more true to reality than just a smooth flowing argument that would
normally be in a movie. The little slip gave way, for the first time, a vulnerable side to the Hal Walker
rep or even politics for that matter.
There is also another form of acousmatic, and it is the subtle comments of the crowd. Because there
are so many appearances and performances the crowd reaction becomes very important to the context
of the story from an outside critical standpoint. Putting these comments together creates one huge

Romans 3:21 states that Jesus came to provide righteousness away from the Law, that way is Jesus
Christ. Verse 22 states that is faith in Jesus Christ to all who believe. Verse 24 states that we are all
justified freely by God s grace and that God send Jesus as an atoning sacrifice for the world. The role
that Jesus had on earth was to be a sacrifice for the sins for the world, to be the pure lamb, for those
who have faith in the teachings and saying of Jesus Christ, the redeemer for the sins of the world that
all have done. One of the most overlooked verses in Romans is chapter 5 verse 3; this is one of the
only places in any holy scripture where one would find us being told to rejoice in our sufferings
because it builds perseverance. Romans 5:18 states that just as sin enter the world through one man, so

Assault Of Prostitution
As academia progresses in nature, there has been an increased awareness in the severity and
commonality of rape and sexual assault. Conversely, despite how much literature is present on the
matter, there is still a grossly disproportionate amount of literature on the nature of rape and sexual
assault of marginalized victims versus that of an ideal victim (Christie, 1986). More specifically there
is very little to no research and literature on the topic of rape and sexual assault of prostitutes while in
the process of their occupation. Women involved in prostitution are amongst the most victimized
groups in society. However, there are some critics who present prostitution as a non victim crime

The complainant said she met two men at a tavern in Calgary in 1977 where she accompanied them to
their apartment. However, at the apartment the men then forced her to remove her clothing, had non

punched her, bit her, threatened to kill her with a knife and attempted to drown her in a bathtub. The
men claimed that the sexual intercourse was consensual and that the woman s injuries were a result of
an accidental fall down the stairs and of a head butt delivered by one of the men. During cross
examination the complainant admitted she had a history of prostitution. However, she claimed that at
the time of the rape she had not practiced prostitution for 5 months. The Royal Canadian Mounted
Police and the Calgary City police then presented evidence to the court that the defendant was a

accused were subsequently found not guilty of rape but were convicted of causing bodily harm. The

but rejecting her story about the rape; he said, Certainly it demonstrates the difficulty of convincing a

two men of raping her, however their defence was that while sexual intercourse had occurred, this was

Essay about President Abraham Lincoln
Although Abraham Lincoln was President over a century and a half ago (1861 1865), he is still
considered to be one of our greatest Presidents, and his legacy remains important for the nation today.
By the late 1800s, sectional tensions in America had led to a split between the Northern and Southern
states. During the Antebellum period, the North became more industrialized as the South increased its
agricultural production. The two sections developed differing economies and ideas and by April 14,
1861, at Fort Sumter, the tensions came to a head as the American Civil War began. Skillfully guiding

history, Abraham Lincoln left a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
His unyielding position on the preservation of the Union can be seen today as the nation is now known
as the United States of America and includes the Southern regions that attempted to secede in the
1860s.
Preserving the Union, however, was only one of the accomplishments of Lincoln that still has an
impact today. In the 1820s, with the rise of expansion and agriculture in the South, slavery increased
in America. During the Antebellum period, slavery continued to be a controversial issue dividing the
North and the South and driving the diverging developments of the nation.
With additional expansion in the 1840s, the question of expansion of slavery again raised sectional
tensions and Northern radicals called for abolition while Southern radicals, or fireeaters, called for
secession from the Union. Lincoln s original position on allowing slavery changed over the course of
his presidency, and by the 1860s, Lincoln aligned himself with the abolitionists, calling for the
immediate abolition of slavery. After the Battle of Antietam, on
September 22, 1862, Lincoln announced his decision to abolish slavery in the states that claimed
secession, and on January 1, 1863, Lincoln formally signed the Emancipation Proclamation.
With this law, all slaves in the Confederacy were freed, and later those in the Border States and
Union states were also freed with the

language really means and how Black English evolved to fulfill an important role for Americans.
Black English sounds proper to blacks, but to whites it may not be a proper use of language.
Throughout this essay, Baldwin uses a specific tone and relates to his audience by opening his mind to
both emotion and logic while still upholding his credibility. Baldwin tries to persuade the audience to
respect the language of Black English using his personal experience. The history of different
languages mentioned in the essay is used to help convince the audience of thinking about the term
language from a new perspective. Whites and Blacks both may speak the same language, but that does
not mean that they understand each other because the language can be spoken in different matters. As
Baldwin states, The white man could not possibly understand, and that, indeed, he cannot understand,
until today . A white man or black man had to be careful about the words they used in front of each

Plot Differences In Disney s Version Of Cinderella
There were a few plot differences in Disney s version of Cinderella and the story of Cinderella that we

  • 2. Determining the Water Potential of Potato Cells EXERCISE 1C: Determining the Water Potential of Potato Cells Introduction: Water potential was defined above as an expression of the tendency of water to diffuse from one region to another. Water potential is a numerical value that must be determined for a given temperature and pressure. In this exercise you will determine the water potential of potato cells at room temperature and ambient pressure by placing cores of potato tissue in sucrose solutions of different concentrations and measuring the net movement of water in each case. In animal cells, movement of H2O into and out of a cell is influenced by the relative concentration of solute on either side of the cell membrane. If water moves out of the cell, the cell will shrink or ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... We will assume, for purposes of explanation, that the solute is not diffusing (Figure 1 .2a). The movement of water into the cell causes the cell to swell, and the cell membrane pushes against the cell wall to produce an increase in pressure (turgor). Figure 1.2a Before Pure Water (p= 0; ((= 0; ( = 0 (p= 0; ((= 3; ( = 3 Figure 1.2b After Pure Water (p= 0; ((= 0; ( = 0 (p= +3; ((= 3; ( = 0 As water continues to diffuse into the cell, the rising positive turgor pressure begins to cancel out the negative osmotic potential of the cell. The Possession of Roland Doe Levitating beds, loss of memory for long periods of time, loss of bladder control, speaking in tongues, these are all symptoms known to be associated with possession. A possession is having control or owning (Farlex). When a person is possessed they have no control over their feelings or actions a majority of the time. The reason it is called a possession is because, when one is possessed, the spirit or demon has control over that person. Ozone Depletion And Its Negative Effects On Aquatic Skin Ozone Depletion and Its Negative Effects on Aquatic Skin The Ozone is made up of three oxygen molecule joint together by covalent bond (O3) which is mostly found in the stratosphere of the Earth. Although it is a poisonous gas, it is important in many ways for human as well as other aquatic and terrestrial animals. But due to the large emission of the halogens and CFCs ozone is being depleted rapidly (Vermishev and Danilov Danilyan 360 361). The enormous disadvantage of the ozone layer depletion is the inability of the earth s atmosphere to filter the UV (Ultra Violate) rays emitted by the sun and actually which has created a various problems such as the negative effects on the terrestrial and aquatic skin. UV ray is that with low wavelength and high frequency. High frequency rays carry high amounts of energy. High energy rays are capable of changing the DNA in molecular level. Aquatic organisms are at higher risk of damage from UV ray the skins of aquatic organisms are just not restricted to one function. The various harmful rays emitted as a result of barbaric human activities have resulted in ozone depletion causing the UV ray to enter through the stratosphere and causes several diseases such as sunburn, cancer in aquatic animals, changes in DNA structure leading to the skin mutations, unusual changes in the sebaceous glands, salt gland, and other several glands. • 6. The Six Barriers To Effective Communication The six major barriers to effective communication are as listed below (i) Cliche (ii) Jargon (iii) Slang (iv) Sexist and Racist language (v) Euphemisms (vi) Doublespeak A cliche is a phrase or a word which was previously considered clever, but due to the passage of time and overuse has lost its original meaning (McLean, 2010). An example is, the writing is on the wall and some fools may fail to read and understand while the signal is made . The sentence seems straightforward, but some receivers of information may start gazing at the wall reading whatever they find there thereby failing to get the intended meaning. I gave a short speech to my staff a few years ago where I said the following, I need all of you be as fast as a rabbit and bring in many customers to our business . I was shocked when one member of staff stood up and walked out of the meeting hurriedly. I sent one of the staff to inquire whether there was something wrong only to be told that he was rushing to get the customers to come to the meeting. The second barrier to communication is the use of jargon. These are the words or terminologies which are common within a specific profession but quite unfamiliar to the clients who use the products. In a marketing set up, the marketer may do well to avoid such jargon while concentrating on what is common in the realms of the customer so that emphasis is laid on the benefits and usefulness of the goods or services. This phenomenon raises a big question mark on how this is possible. At first, resonance was suspected to be the main cause of the bridge failure (The New York Times, 1940). After some proper research and thorough investigations by engineers, they came up with several theories on how did the bridge collapse. The primary cause of the collapse lies in the general proportions of the bridge and the type of stiffening girders and floor. The ratio of the width of the bridge to the length of the main span was so much smaller and the vertical stiffness was so much less than those of previously constructed bridges that ... Theodore von Karman, a famous aeronautical engineer, claimed that the motion that was seen on the day when the bridge was brought into pieces was due to vortices. When an air flow passes a bluff body, it created the periodic shedding of air vortices, which created the von Karman Vortex Street (Delatte, 2009). As a consequence, the bridge would move towards the low pressure zone, in a wavering development called vortex induced vibration. On the off chance that the recurrence of vortex shedding matches the regular recurrence of the scaffold, then the structure reverberates and motions may get to be distinctly self maintaining. This wake reinforced the oscillations that were present and caused the centre span to violently twist until the bridge collapsed (Von Kármán, 1963). The governments act trying to counter attack this effect by improving fiscal policy for the betterment of business cycle lead to more outlay than revenue, which resulted in the increase of the deficit promptly. So, therefore borrowing the money to deal with deficit lead to increase in the national debt. Crowding out occurs when spending by an individual or an organisation or to be more precise, private spending decreases and by increasing the government spending. People sometimes use this as an alternative replacement and lets the government to spend more. BBC reported that some 10,000 fireworks lit up the sky around the London Eye, welcoming 2018. Fireworks displays are, perhaps inarguably, a beautiful way to light up the skies in anticipation for the new year but for birds, it s nothing short of a terror attack. Forbes contributor GrrlScientist wrote in 2015 about how panic stricken birds reached altitudes of 500 meters, flying en masse as they flee from the flashing lights and crashing explosions of fireworks. Judy Shamoun Baranes, a researcher on the en masse fleeing of birds due to New Year s Eve fireworks, compared the panic stricken birds flight altitudes to those observed from migrating birds. Like humans, birds cannot see very well in the dark, GrrlScientist wrote. [Panicked] wild birds will crash into power lines, automobiles, buildings, trees, and even each other, especially on cloudy or moonless nights. Comparing it to humans in a stampede, GrrlScientist reported that mid air bird collisions can result in serious injuries or death because they would fall from the sky upon impact, rendering an otherwise survivable injury into death. • 30. How Did Technological Developments Affect The Evolution Of... 1. How did technological developments affect the evolution of jazz? Jazz as we know it has existed for over a century, with its roots stemming from the low tech history of the slave fields, and European classical music. Throughout the 20th century, however, new advancements in technology would change music forever, and Jazz is no exception. As technology advanced, so too did complex compositions of the artists, and even our definition of music as a whole. The first innovation which revolutionized Jazz was Thomas Edison s phonograph, the first device capable of recording and reproducing sound. As musicians previously learned through reading sheet music, it was impossible to discern the variations in tone and improvisation from a musical work. The phonograph was revolutionary for its time, as musicians could now learn through listening to details within the music. The device also helped transform Jazz to a national genre, as the advent of recording allowed one musician to listen to the works of another from afar. Early recording companies such as Columbia and the Victor Talking Machine Company sprang up as a result of this invention. Though the later disc record phonographs (also known as gramophones ) won the format war against Edison s cylindrical phonograph, Edison himself began the chain of innovation. If not for the phonograph, the Original Dixieland Jazz Band would not have recorded their first composition. Consequently, no later Jazz recordings would be ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

These problems are rooted in the battle between the need to create some false image of success and the need for truth which is the struggle that exists in every character of this film (except Jeff Goldbloom). To show this Robert Altman takes us through Nashville s Country Music using political commentary, music and realistically portrayed dialogue to tell the story. The nature of dialogue itself is solely for creating and upholding the self image of the Nashville Star weather you are one or not. The conversations never get passed the surface issues, and no one ever speaks their mind unless it s safe. But, the reality of each character is very real and deep due to the way the dialogue was set up. Most of the people were frivolous so in order to add some depth and reveal their true character Altman had to make the dialogue as realistic as possible. The dialogue seemed almost unrehearsed or not planned at all which gives it its reality. The most odious example of this is when the Hal Walker representative is arguing about the political sign with Barbra Gene s husband at Centennial Park. He slips on his line in the heat of the argument. I don t know if this was intentional or not, but I think they chose to keep it in the movie because it seemed to be more true to reality than just a smooth flowing argument that would normally be in a movie. The little slip gave way, for the first time, a vulnerable side to the Hal Walker rep or even politics for that matter. The trial judge allowed this evidence to be admitted to the proceedings, where the accused were subsequently found not guilty of rape but were convicted of causing bodily harm. In the 1820s, with the rise of expansion and agriculture in the South, slavery increased in America. During the Antebellum period, slavery continued to be a controversial issue dividing the North and the South and driving the diverging developments of the nation. With additional expansion in the 1840s, the question of expansion of slavery again raised sectional tensions and Northern radicals called for abolition while Southern radicals, or fireeaters, called for secession from the Union.
