Papercrete is a construction material which consists of re-pulped paper fiber with Portland cement or clay and/or other soil added. First patented in 1928, it was revived during the 1980s. Although perceived as an environmentally friendly material due to the significant recycled content, this is offset by the presence of cement. The material lacks standardisation, and proper use therefore requires care and experience. Eric Patterson and Mike McCain, who have been credited with independently "inventing" papercrete (they called it "padobe" and "fibrous cement"), have both contributed considerably to research into machinery to make it and ways of using it for building

2. INTRODUCTION TO PAPERCRETE
Papercrete is a type of fibrous cement, made by
shredding paper (old newspapers...) into pulp in water
and adding Portland cement. The thick mix can then be
poured into molds and cast like concrete, creating blocks,
panels and innumerable other shapes. When cured and
dried (above right), papercrete is strong, lightweight,
insulating and has many properties which make it an
ideal building material.

magazines, even cardboard boxes - and blend or mix to shred the
paper and mix it with water

It should not be too runny, just liquid enough to pour into a waiting
form or mold or whatever.
60% paper (newspaper/cardboard/magazines), 30% sand and 10%
cement.

It is dimensionally very stable both through the process of taking in
moisture and drying out and in a wide range of temperatures.
It will hold fasteners to some extent, especially screws, without
cracking.
It does not support flames, but will smolder for days if it does catch
fire. The more cement and mineral material that is added to the mix,
the more fire proof it becomes

It will support molds if it remains warm and moist for too long.

As it was a versatile material has so many practical uses
Due to its semi liquid state as a mix, like concrete, it can
be cast and molded into countless shapes and allowed to
cure hard

plaster, for covering the finished wall
