INNOVATORS’ CHALLENGE 2019
National Level STEM Expo
Project: Bricks and Pave Blocks from
Plastic waste.
Problem Statement:
In recent years, plastic has become a major problem as we are using
more plastic but aren’t finding ways to reuse it and because of that
plastic accumulation is increasing and causing pollution all over the
world.
Research work:
We have gathered required information for the project from the article
“Utilization of waste plastic in manufacturing of Bricks and paver blocks”
by Dinesh.S ,Dinesh.A and Kirubakaran.K
Solution:
Plastic can be reused to make bricks and pave blocks by mixing with
sand and bricks can also be made out of pure plastic.
Abstract:
Plastic waste is increasing day by day which is polluting the environ-
ment .People are burning plastic which is leading to contamination of
environment and hence these waste plastics are to be effectively utilized.
High density polyethylene(HDPE) and Polyethylene(PE) bags are cleaned
and added with sand and aggregate at various percentages to obtain
high strength bricks that possess thermal and sound insulation
properties .
Bricks can be made with pure plastic where plastic is shredded
into smaller pieces and using water boiler and compressor, Plastic
pieces form a brick which is thinner and lighter and have similar
properties like plastic sand brick i.e. better thermal and sound
insulating properties than a conventional brick.
In this way we can effectively use plastic waste in
construction fieldas the material is of low cost and is abundant
Plastic bricks are not harmful to the environment. We can use
them for construction purpose in many areas.
This project comes under the domain – Engineering in daily life
Competitors:
Bricks and paver blocks manufacturing companies, Newly emerging companies
working on different projects based on plastic bricks using latest technology.
Properties:
•Plastic bricks have more compressive strength when compared with Fly ash bricks
and Burnt bricks. Plastic paver blocks have more compressive strength than
ordinary paver blocks.
•Plastic bricks absorb less water when compared with Fly ash bricks and burnt
bricks.
•Plastic paver blocks absorb less water than ordinary paver blocks due to content of
plastic.
•Bricks which are completely made of plastic are thinner and lighter. They have
better heat insulating properties than conventional bricks. They are better at
insulating against noise.
•Pure plastic bricks can’t be used in place of standard bricks as plastic compresses
under structural load.
Technology used:
For preparation of plastic sand brick:-
1-Moulds to prepare bricks.
2-Rod and trowel to mix the sand along with molten plastic.
For preparation of pure plastic bricks:-
1-Shredder.
2-Water boiler and compressor.
Impact of the project:
This project makes a great impact as its cheaper to manufacture than conventional
brick as it helps in removal of waste products thus abolishing the land requirement
for dumping plastic. Its suitable in countries like India where dispose/recycle of
plastic is difficult.
Shredder is used to cut larger plastic materials
into smaller pieces.
