This document summarizes dietary and lifestyle factors that impact dyslipidemias. It discusses how certain foods like oats, soy, nuts, and plant sterols can lower LDL cholesterol, while foods like trans fats and simple sugars raise it. Physical activity, weight control, and certain nutrients like fiber, omega-3s, probiotics, and vitamin D also favorably impact blood lipid levels. The document provides guidelines from leading health organizations on recommended dietary patterns for managing dyslipidemias.
The Mediterranean diet emphasizes eating together, hospitality, diversity, and respect. It involves skills and traditions related to harvesting, processing, cooking, and sharing food. The diet is inspired by eating patterns in Italy, Greece, Spain, and Morocco and emphasizes fruits, vegetables, grains, beans, fish, olive oil, and moderate wine consumption. It was studied by Dr. Ancel Keys who found those following the diet had lower rates of heart disease. The Mediterranean diet pyramid places plant foods at the base and recommends them daily, with fish, poultry, dairy in moderation, and sweets occasionally. Socialization and seasonal, local foods are also important aspects.

Medical errors represent a serious public health problem and occur frequently in various healthcare settings. They can involve medicines, surgery, diagnosis, equipment, or lab reports. Studies estimate medical errors may be the third leading cause of death in the US, resulting in between 200,000 to 400,000 deaths per year. Many common types of errors like misdiagnosis, unnecessary treatment, medication mistakes, and uncoordinated care have been reduced through standardized protocols and safety practices, but medical errors still frequently harm and kill patients.

Hypertension is defined as a systolic blood pressure over 120 mmHg or a diastolic blood pressure over 80 mmHg. It is one of the most common diseases and its prevalence increases with age and genetic factors and varies between racial groups based on dietary and lifestyle habits. Hypertension can be primary or essential, or secondary to conditions like renal vascular disease or endocrine disorders. It is classified based on blood pressure readings and can range from mild to malignant. While some patients experience headaches or blurred vision, hypertension often presents no symptoms. Managing hypertension involves lifestyle changes, medication prescribed by a doctor, and monitoring to prevent complications like heart disease and stroke.
This document provides guidelines for screening, diagnosing, and managing diabetes and prediabetes. It recommends screening adults over age 45 or those overweight/obese with risk factors, repeating tests at 3-year intervals if normal. The A1C, FPG, or OGTT tests can diagnose diabetes or prediabetes. It also provides recommendations for managing gestational diabetes and foot care for patients with diabetes.
This document provides evidence-based guideline recommendations for diagnosing, screening, treating, monitoring treatment, and following up on hypothyroidism. It discusses recommendations for diagnosing hypothyroidism through TSH testing, screening high-risk groups but not asymptomatic adults, and treating with levothyroxine. It also provides guidance on monitoring treatment through periodic TSH testing, adjusting doses for elderly patients and those with heart conditions, and addressing persistent symptoms or high TSH levels despite treatment.
This document provides guidelines for screening, diagnosing, and managing diabetes and prediabetes. It recommends screening all adults over age 45 or those overweight/obese with risk factors, repeating screening every 3 years if normal. It also provides guidelines for gestational diabetes screening and management. The document recommends lifestyle interventions and metformin to prevent diabetes in those with a history of gestational diabetes or current prediabetes. It outlines recommendations for diabetes self-management education, medical nutrition therapy, smoking cessation, foot care, and treatment individualization.
1. Nutrition & Cancer
Dr. Hisham Al Dabbagh
المملكة العربية السعودية
وزارة التعليم العالي
كلية العناية للعلوم الطبية
2. Cancer risk statistics
• Risk is the chance of developing a disease.
This is calculated as the risk , up to age 75
years, of developing cancer.
• The risk of developing any form of cancer is
1 in 4 women, and 1 in 3 men.
3. The risk for the most common cancers are
listed below
Men Women
Prostate 1 in 9 --
Breast -- 1 in 11
Colorectal 1 in 19 1 in 28
Melanoma 1 in 23 1 in 31
Lung 1 in 24 1 in 42
4. • Nutritional Connection
• Is estimated at least 35% of all cancer
• Foods that come from the plant kingdom
rather than the animal kingdom have many
protective botanical factors
5. • The phytonutrients
• Antioxidants, Anticarcinogens and
Bioflavonoids are some of the terms used to
describe the actions of phytonutrients.
• Foods rich in botanical factors or
phytonutrients include berries, dark green
leafy vegetables, citrus fruits, legumes
(beans of all sorts including soy) and whole
grains.
6. • Soy protein
• Phytonutrients may protect against
hormone sensitive cancers:
- By blocking receptors with plant estrogen.
- By the action of protease inhibitors.
7. • Broccoli
• Isothiocyanates are protective against
carcinogenesis in laboratory studies.
• Other vegetables in this group include
cabbage, cauliflower, Swiss chard,
watercress and kale
8. Dietary fibers
• Indigestible part of plant food.
• Reduce the risk of incidence of colon
cancer.
9. • Frying or charbroiling
• May cause carcinogens on the surface by
the action of the heat.
• Smoking or nitrite curing may also form
carcinogens
10. Foods That Fight Cancer
• No single food or food component can
protect you against cancer by itself.
• But the combination of foods in a
predominantly plant-based diet may protect
against cancer .
• There is evidence that the minerals, vitamins
and phytochemicals in plant foods could
interact in ways that boost their individual
anti-cancer effects.
11. • Eating a predominantly plant based diet
can help prevent weight gain and protect
against those cancers whose risk is
convincingly increased by higher body fat
(cancers of the colorectum, esophagus,
endometrium, pancreas, kidney and breast
in postmenopausal women).
12. • Here is a list of foods which may protect against
cancer
• Beans
• Berries
• Cruciferous Vegetables
• Dark Green Leafy Vegetables
• Flaxseed
• Garlic
• Grapes and Grape Juice
• Green Tea
• Soy
• Tomatoes
• Whole Grain
13. Nutrition to Help You Fight Cancer
• Antioxidants: Vitamins, Flavonoids, and
Minerals
Plant foods like fruits and vegetables, whole
grains, nuts and seeds are your best bet to obtain
disease-fighting antioxidants such as vitamins A,
C and E, the mineral selenium, and flavonoids
Research shows that much of the antioxidant
power of a healthy plant-based diet comes not
from the traditional vitamins we focus on, but
from a wide range of phytochemicals ... these
compounds seem to work best together, not on
their own."
14. • The benefits you get from eating a diet rich
in functional foods loaded with antioxidants
go far beyond fighting cancer.
• For the most protection, you should try to
eat a wide variety of colorful fruits and
vegetables, including garlic and onion,
tomatoes, watermelon, leafy greens,
broccoli, cauliflower, blue berries, carrots,
and bell peppers.
15. Functional Foods Trump Supplements
• It's best to eat your functional foods, rather than
taking a pill.
• There is recommendation against using supplements
for cancer protection at this time
• Some recent studies have demonstrated that beta-carotene,
vitamin E, and vitamin A supplements can
actually raise the chance of death.
• Certain populations may need supplements of
vitamin B-12, folic acid, calcium, or vitamin D:
(People over age 50 , Vegetarians, Pregnant women
Children, Those who rarely get sunshine )
16. Getting the Most From Functional Foods
• Try to buy produce that has been picked at
full ripeness and maximum color, an indication
of the presence of flavonoids
• Cook your vegetables in a little water as
possible to minimize the amount of nutrients
lost in the cooking process.
17. • Aim to eat fish one to two times each week,
and choose from a variety of species,
emphasizing cold-water fish.
• Make sure you eat fat-soluble antioxidants
like lycopene and vitamins A and E, with a
little fat, such as olive oil, to help your body
absorb the valuable nutrients
