PRODUCTION LOG:
GUIDANCE
• This document is for you to track the progress of your
production – filming, editing and post-production.
• This is so you can track what you did and how you did it,
explaining and amendments and changes you made and
tracking the decisions that have shaped the practical
creation of your music video.
• The more detail you include about how you made your music
video, the better. The document is broken down in to two
sections, Filming and Editing, each of these is then made of
specific elements that occur in both.
• For each slide there is a prompt detailing what you should
include, delete the prompt after you have complete the slide.
• Remember, images often show what you’ve done more
effectively than words. Use text to explain an illustration.
FILMING
Explain what worked and didn’t work about your filming and how you
managed this covering the following areas:
• Technical – using the cameras and any technical equipment; this
could be how you did your lip sync, used the green screen, dealt
with problems with batteries, etc
• Logistical – did your locations work? Did you have any access
problems? Did it rain?
• Personnel – how were your cast/crew? Did anyone let you down?
How did you manage this?
• Planning – did your planning help? Do you think it could have
worked better? How?
• Next steps – do you need to re-film? Film more? Have you
changed your video? How/why?
TECHNICAL
When filming my music video I encountered plenty of advantages and disadvantages in the
preparation and while shooting my video. One technical thing which worked well when shooting my
music video was playing the song from an external device while lip syncing the lyrics. Doing this
allowed me to be sure that I was lip-syncing in time with the music. If I were to lip-sync off of memory
this could mean timing the lip-sync would be off causing it to be unsatisfying to the audience. Another
technical thing which worked well when shooting my music video was using the studio to film
different shots. Using the college facilities allowed me to use the studio with large studio lights and a
white backdrop. This allowed me to get some brilliant medium shots which I could express my colour
editing skills with the lighting. Another advantage when shooting my music video is using my phone
which allowed me to transfer the footage straight from my camera roll to my one drive in which I could
access from college. This was way more convenient because when transferring footage from a camera
there an be issues.
On the other hand, a thing that was inconvenient when filming my music video was that I had no
access to a good quality camera. Due to the current pandemic I could not hire equipment such as
cameras for filming my music video meaning that I had to make the best out of using the camera on
my iphone6. This was hard because the quality only went up to 1080p which is okay however I would
of preferred the best quality from a good camera. Another disadvantage when using my old phone to
film this music video is that the battery life was very short and runs out fast. This meant I had to carry
a portable charger to keep my battery life up while filming whereas with a decent camera it would of
held good battery life. Another disadvantage when filming my music video was having no camera
tripod or stand. This meant that I and my crew had to film holding the camera which meant my shots
were wobbly and moved a lot. If I had access to a tripod it would of made my shots way smoother
which is more satisfying to the audience.
LOGISTICAL
When filming my music video I had a select amount of places I wanted to film which were best suited
for the theme of the video. In order to use certain locations I had to come at different times to adapt to
when they are open and when the weather was in decent enough conditions. I wanted to get some
shots in York museum gardens which is open everyday at 10:30am till 6pm. I also had to consider the
weather forecast so the Tuesday and Wednesday were the only days that week which weren’t raining.
Filming on the Tuesday was difficult because we arrived in town late at around 17:50 meaning we
couldn't film in the garden so we had to film there another day instead. As the second half of my
music video required it to be at night, I went to take some shots of myself and got a bit of lip-sync as
under a light. When I got home I got my flood lights and filmed some shots in my back garden. This
was easier to do instead of my first choice field because I didn’t have to travel to go there and I had a
better light at home which displayed the subject of the shots better. On the next day after college I
decided to take some POV shots of me walking and some amusing buildings. When doing this I had to
consider the time of day so that the weather and light doesn’t differ from the other clips which were
going to be put along side these ones at the first half of my music video. Due to issues with cast and
crew isolating from a scare of COVID-19, I had to reorganise for the next week when the conditions
were suitable to get my shots earlier in the day inside the garden with the cast and crew all ready
PERSONNEL
Olly, myself and Alice worked well as crew because they were mostly available to help film after
college and on weekends as they both live in York whereas I don’t. Olly is also a Creative media
student so its convenient that we could both help each other to film and direct however, On one of the
days Alice was waiting on her fathers covid-19 test back meaning she had to isolate and we couldn’t
film. Luckily the results came back negative meaning we could rearrange the next week to film the
parts I needed her to be in.
PLANNING
Planning my music video was very useful as I could play the video through my head however putting
it down into sections made improving it way easier. One thing that was useful when planning was
making a mind map splitting beginning, middle and end of the music video. This allowed me to see
which kind of shots I wanted to the duration in each section and if it was enough. Another thing that
was useful when planning was creating a shot list. Making a shot list was convenient as I carried it
with me when filming to make sure I could get every shot from when I was grasping my ideas. Another
thing that was useful when planning was doing a ‘Rip-o-matic’. This was effective because although it
isn’t the actual clips I took and it was royalty free videos from online, It gave me inspiration on what I
want to film and how long each cut is going to be. It also was convenient as it gave me practise for
when I actually created my video.
On the other hand what I could of done better when planning my music video could have been to of
organized props and costume in the short time I had.
EDITING
• Record your edit progress, decisions, problems, etc. in
this section
• Include screenshots with annotations, statements, etc
where possible
• Try to explain how you worked and justify why you chose
to work the way you did.
• Follow the structure and what to include on each slide as
this is necessary for evidence for assessment
• Pick notable moments in the editing process and discuss
them, what worked/didn’t work and why, how you adjusted
to problems. Discuss how you worked and what you
learned from the process
WHAT WENT WELL
[3 EXAMPLES]
Firstly, one example of something that went well during editing my music video was using my clips to
not leave huge gaps in the song without it being boring. Using the effect of slo-mo allowed me to use
a clip for longer duration however it is still satisfying. Secondly, Another example of something that
went well during editing was using the colour effects. Adding the colour effects made my clips look
way more amusing and set tone and atmosphere to my video. Including an adjustment layer was
useful because it meant I could add effects to my clips without actually effecting the clip. Lastly, an
example of something that went well during editing my music video was including transition effect.
Using the glitch effect was convenient as it made the switch between one clip to another more smooth
and satisfying.
WHAT PROBLEMS DID

EXAMPLES]
One problem I had when editing was the desktop crashing. While having a 10 hour budget having to
re-do my cuts and edits again was frustrating. This mean I had to constantly save my work so that I
wouldn’t get set back too far. Another problem I had when editing my music video was overdoing the
effects. At first I thought my clips looked bad on their own which led me to adding various colour
effects and trying lots of changes however it just looked messy and unrealistic. I then went more
simple with the filters and effects so that it looked better than its original form but not too much.
Another problem I faced when editing my music video was finding a balance between the beginning
and the end. The end of my music video made the start of it look very dry because it dragged and
wasn’t as interesting. To make it less bad I added a blur vignette to make it have a dream effect
however getting more complex and variety in clips could of helped make my video better.

  • 1. PRODUCTION LOG: GUIDANCE • This document is for you to track the progress of your production – filming, editing and post-production. • This is so you can track what you did and how you did it, explaining and amendments and changes you made and tracking the decisions that have shaped the practical creation of your music video. • The more detail you include about how you made your music video, the better. The document is broken down in to two sections, Filming and Editing, each of these is then made of specific elements that occur in both. • For each slide there is a prompt detailing what you should include, delete the prompt after you have complete the slide. • Remember, images often show what you’ve done more effectively than words. Use text to explain an illustration.
  • 2. FILMING Explain what worked and didn’t work about your filming and how you managed this covering the following areas: • Technical – using the cameras and any technical equipment; this could be how you did your lip sync, used the green screen, dealt with problems with batteries, etc • Logistical – did your locations work? Did you have any access problems? Did it rain? • Personnel – how were your cast/crew? Did anyone let you down? How did you manage this? • Planning – did your planning help? Do you think it could have worked better? How? • Next steps – do you need to re-film? Film more? Have you changed your video? How/why?
  • 3. TECHNICAL When filming my music video I encountered plenty of advantages and disadvantages in the preparation and while shooting my video. One technical thing which worked well when shooting my music video was playing the song from an external device while lip syncing the lyrics. Doing this allowed me to be sure that I was lip-syncing in time with the music. If I were to lip-sync off of memory this could mean timing the lip-sync would be off causing it to be unsatisfying to the audience. Another technical thing which worked well when shooting my music video was using the studio to film different shots. Using the college facilities allowed me to use the studio with large studio lights and a white backdrop. This allowed me to get some brilliant medium shots which I could express my colour editing skills with the lighting. Another advantage when shooting my music video is using my phone which allowed me to transfer the footage straight from my camera roll to my one drive in which I could access from college. This was way more convenient because when transferring footage from a camera there an be issues. On the other hand, a thing that was inconvenient when filming my music video was that I had no access to a good quality camera. Due to the current pandemic I could not hire equipment such as cameras for filming my music video meaning that I had to make the best out of using the camera on my iphone6. This was hard because the quality only went up to 1080p which is okay however I would of preferred the best quality from a good camera. Another disadvantage when using my old phone to film this music video is that the battery life was very short and runs out fast. This meant I had to carry a portable charger to keep my battery life up while filming whereas with a decent camera it would of held good battery life. Another disadvantage when filming my music video was having no camera tripod or stand. This meant that I and my crew had to film holding the camera which meant my shots were wobbly and moved a lot. If I had access to a tripod it would of made my shots way smoother which is more satisfying to the audience.
  • 4. LOGISTICAL When filming my music video I had a select amount of places I wanted to film which were best suited for the theme of the video. In order to use certain locations I had to come at different times to adapt to when they are open and when the weather was in decent enough conditions. I wanted to get some shots in York museum gardens which is open everyday at 10:30am till 6pm. I also had to consider the weather forecast so the Tuesday and Wednesday were the only days that week which weren’t raining. Filming on the Tuesday was difficult because we arrived in town late at around 17:50 meaning we couldn't film in the garden so we had to film there another day instead. As the second half of my music video required it to be at night, I went to take some shots of myself and got a bit of lip-sync as under a light. When I got home I got my flood lights and filmed some shots in my back garden. This was easier to do instead of my first choice field because I didn’t have to travel to go there and I had a better light at home which displayed the subject of the shots better. On the next day after college I decided to take some POV shots of me walking and some amusing buildings. When doing this I had to consider the time of day so that the weather and light doesn’t differ from the other clips which were going to be put along side these ones at the first half of my music video. Due to issues with cast and crew isolating from a scare of COVID-19, I had to reorganise for the next week when the conditions were suitable to get my shots earlier in the day inside the garden with the cast and crew all ready
  • 5. PERSONNEL Olly, myself and Alice worked well as crew because they were mostly available to help film after college and on weekends as they both live in York whereas I don’t. Olly is also a Creative media student so its convenient that we could both help each other to film and direct however, On one of the days Alice was waiting on her fathers covid-19 test back meaning she had to isolate and we couldn’t film. Luckily the results came back negative meaning we could rearrange the next week to film the parts I needed her to be in.
  • 6. PLANNING Planning my music video was very useful as I could play the video through my head however putting it down into sections made improving it way easier. One thing that was useful when planning was making a mind map splitting beginning, middle and end of the music video. This allowed me to see which kind of shots I wanted to the duration in each section and if it was enough. Another thing that was useful when planning was creating a shot list. Making a shot list was convenient as I carried it with me when filming to make sure I could get every shot from when I was grasping my ideas. Another thing that was useful when planning was doing a ‘Rip-o-matic’. This was effective because although it isn’t the actual clips I took and it was royalty free videos from online, It gave me inspiration on what I want to film and how long each cut is going to be. It also was convenient as it gave me practise for when I actually created my video. On the other hand what I could of done better when planning my music video could have been to of organized props and costume in the short time I had.
  • 7. EDITING • Record your edit progress, decisions, problems, etc. in this section • Include screenshots with annotations, statements, etc where possible • Try to explain how you worked and justify why you chose to work the way you did. • Follow the structure and what to include on each slide as this is necessary for evidence for assessment • Pick notable moments in the editing process and discuss them, what worked/didn’t work and why, how you adjusted to problems. Discuss how you worked and what you learned from the process
  • 8. WHAT WENT WELL [3 EXAMPLES] Firstly, one example of something that went well during editing my music video was using my clips to not leave huge gaps in the song without it being boring. Using the effect of slo-mo allowed me to use a clip for longer duration however it is still satisfying. Secondly, Another example of something that went well during editing was using the colour effects. Adding the colour effects made my clips look way more amusing and set tone and atmosphere to my video. Including an adjustment layer was useful because it meant I could add effects to my clips without actually effecting the clip. Lastly, an example of something that went well during editing my music video was including transition effect. Using the glitch effect was convenient as it made the switch between one clip to another more smooth and satisfying.
  • 9. WHAT PROBLEMS DID YOU HAVE? [3 EXAMPLES] One problem I had when editing was the desktop crashing. While having a 10 hour budget having to re-do my cuts and edits again was frustrating. This mean I had to constantly save my work so that I wouldn’t get set back too far. Another problem I had when editing my music video was overdoing the effects. At first I thought my clips looked bad on their own which led me to adding various colour effects and trying lots of changes however it just looked messy and unrealistic. I then went more simple with the filters and effects so that it looked better than its original form but not too much. Another problem I faced when editing my music video was finding a balance between the beginning and the end. The end of my music video made the start of it look very dry because it dragged and wasn’t as interesting. To make it less bad I added a blur vignette to make it have a dream effect however getting more complex and variety in clips could of helped make my video better.
