PRODUCTION LOG:
GUIDANCE
• This document is for you to track the progress of your
production – filming, editing and post-production.
• This is so you can track what you did and how you did it,
explaining and amendments and changes you made and
tracking the decisions that have shaped the practical
creation of your music video.
• The more detail you include about how you made your music
video, the better. The document is broken down in to two
sections, Filming and Editing, each of these is then made of
specific elements that occur in both.
• For each slide there is a prompt detailing what you should
include, delete the prompt after you have complete the slide.
• Remember, images often show what you’ve done more
effectively than words. Use text to explain an illustration.
FILMING
Explain what worked and didn’t work about your filming and how you
managed this covering the following areas:
• Technical – using the cameras and any technical equipment; this
could be how you did your lip sync, used the green screen, dealt
with problems with batteries, etc
• Logistical – did your locations work? Did you have any access
problems? Did it rain?
• Personnel – how were your cast/crew? Did anyone let you down?
How did you manage this?
• Planning – did your planning help? Do you think it could have
worked better? How?
• Next steps – do you need to re-film? Film more? Have you
changed your video? How/why?
TECHNICAL
When I was filming I got plenty of footage of myself lip-syncing, and the
other actors in front of the backdrop, I did this to make sure that I would
have enough footage for the video, and also to make sure that I have
enough lip-synced footage in case I didn’t like one or it wasn’t filmed well.
I was sure to bring a charger and an extra battery as I knew I would be
filming a lot and I didn’t want the camera to die.
I made sure to ask in advance for the equipment that I knew I needed for
the days I was filming, so that I would be prepared and ready to start
filming straight away.
I didn’t book the camera equipment out for long enough so, I resolved
that problem by filming some footage on my phone, which I also used for
the video.
LOGISTICAL
I did plan to film the majority of the video outside, but do to the weather
being so bad by it raining everyday, I decided to stick to one location
which was the studio. I was able to film some footage outside but not as
much as I filmed in the studio. During editing I made the outdoor footage
look like the footage from the studio by changing the colour of the
background.
In the end, working in the studio did work and it was successful, it looked
good and colourful and it matched the song very well, and I liked it better
than my original plan.
If the weather was better and it was a different season in the year then I
would have stuck to my original plan by mainly filming outside but as it
wasn’t summer I was unable to film what I was planning on filming, but I
was able to find away around that problem by booking out the studio.
PERSONNEL
The majority of my crew were very good and helpful when filming, but
some of my cast were unable to help me film so I had to find other actors
who would help me.
I did have someone who would be the main character for my video, but
they were unable to come to the college when I wanted to film, so I had
to find away around that and I had no one else to film as the main
character, so I decided to film myself, it worked well but it would have
been better if I was able to film someone else as I would have been able
to direct them better and the actor would have been less conscious of
themselves and would have been confident.
A lot of my crew did really help with the filming process like filming myself
and helping me to set up the studio, lights and backgrounds and also
sound.
PLANNING
My planning definitely helped me when it came to producing my final
product, it helped me with my locations and technical qualities for filming.
It helped me to have a better idea of what I wanted the video to look like
so when I was ready to film I already had an idea of what I wanted it to
look like, and when I finished all of my editing and filming my final product
was exactly what I wanted.
It could have worked better if some crew did turn up and the weather was
good at the time, but I was able to work around that and make my video
still look good and similar to my original plan by adding ideas from my
original plan.
EDITING
• Record your edit progress, decisions, problems, etc. in
this section
• Include screenshots with annotations, statements, etc
where possible
• Try to explain how you worked and justify why you chose
to work the way you did.
• Follow the structure and what to include on each slide as
this is necessary for evidence for assessment
• Pick notable moments in the editing process and discuss
them, what worked/didn’t work and why, how you adjusted
to problems. Discuss how you worked and what you
learned from the process
WHAT WENT WELL
[3 EXAMPLES]
• I like how I edited some of my outdoor footage to look similar to the
studio footage by changing the colour of the video.
• I like how I added transparent lyrics to some parts of the song, mainly
in the chorus so it matched the whole way throughout the video.
• I liked how I had many cuts that broke the continuity up well and it
matched the songs beat very well.
WHAT PROBLEMS DID
YOU HAVE? [3
EXAMPLES]
• Some of the cuts that I made didn’t match with the songs beat so it
was off with the timing of the song.
• I struggled to make the text transparent as I wanted to put lyrics in but
I eventually found out how to do it.
• When editing I didn’t have much footage for lip-syncing so I went and
filmed more so that I didn’t have any gaps in the video.
NEXT STEPS…
What are the main things you’ve learned from this project?
Pick a minimum of 5 to discuss…
Making sure that my crew/cast is able to film on the days that I am
wanting to film.
Booking equipment out for a longer time period so that all my footage
looks similar so that the quality doesn’t look bad.
I could plan my editing so that it would be easier as I didn’t know how I
wanted it to look until I started editing.
Plan in what order of the song I would film first and last.
How to edit to the beat of the song and how to make it match with the
song.
