Operation “Blue Star” is the only event in the history of Independent India where the state went into war with its own people. Even after about 40 years it is not clear if it was culmination of states anger over people of the region, a political game of power or start of dictatorial chapter in the democratic setup.
The people of Punjab felt alienated from main stream due to denial of their just demands during a long democratic struggle since independence. As it happen all over the word, it led to militant struggle with great loss of lives of military, police and civilian personnel. Killing of Indira Gandhi and massacre of innocent Sikhs in Delhi and other India cities was also associated with this movement.
2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.
The Roman Empire A Historical Colossus.pdfkaushalkr1407
The Roman Empire, a vast and enduring power, stands as one of history's most remarkable civilizations, leaving an indelible imprint on the world. It emerged from the Roman Republic, transitioning into an imperial powerhouse under the leadership of Augustus Caesar in 27 BCE. This transformation marked the beginning of an era defined by unprecedented territorial expansion, architectural marvels, and profound cultural influence.
The empire's roots lie in the city of Rome, founded, according to legend, by Romulus in 753 BCE. Over centuries, Rome evolved from a small settlement to a formidable republic, characterized by a complex political system with elected officials and checks on power. However, internal strife, class conflicts, and military ambitions paved the way for the end of the Republic. Julius Caesar’s dictatorship and subsequent assassination in 44 BCE created a power vacuum, leading to a civil war. Octavian, later Augustus, emerged victorious, heralding the Roman Empire’s birth.
Under Augustus, the empire experienced the Pax Romana, a 200-year period of relative peace and stability. Augustus reformed the military, established efficient administrative systems, and initiated grand construction projects. The empire's borders expanded, encompassing territories from Britain to Egypt and from Spain to the Euphrates. Roman legions, renowned for their discipline and engineering prowess, secured and maintained these vast territories, building roads, fortifications, and cities that facilitated control and integration.
The Roman Empire’s society was hierarchical, with a rigid class system. At the top were the patricians, wealthy elites who held significant political power. Below them were the plebeians, free citizens with limited political influence, and the vast numbers of slaves who formed the backbone of the economy. The family unit was central, governed by the paterfamilias, the male head who held absolute authority.
Culturally, the Romans were eclectic, absorbing and adapting elements from the civilizations they encountered, particularly the Greeks. Roman art, literature, and philosophy reflected this synthesis, creating a rich cultural tapestry. Latin, the Roman language, became the lingua franca of the Western world, influencing numerous modern languages.
Roman architecture and engineering achievements were monumental. They perfected the arch, vault, and dome, constructing enduring structures like the Colosseum, Pantheon, and aqueducts. These engineering marvels not only showcased Roman ingenuity but also served practical purposes, from public entertainment to water supply.

2. PRODUCTION LOG:
GUIDANCE
• This document is for you to track the progress of your
production – filming, editing and post-production.
• This is so you can track what you did and how you did it,
explaining and amendments and changes you made and
tracking the decisions that have shaped the practical
creation of your music video.
• The more detail you include about how you made your music
video, the better. The document is broken down in to two
sections, Filming and Editing, each of these is then made of
specific elements that occur in both.
• For each slide there is a prompt detailing what you should
include, delete the prompt after you have complete the slide.
• Remember, images often show what you’ve done more
effectively than words. Use text to explain an illustration.
3. FILMING
Explain what worked and didn’t work about your filming and how you
managed this covering the following areas:
• Technical – using the cameras and any technical equipment; this
could be how you did your lip sync, used the green screen, dealt
with problems with batteries, etc
• Logistical – did your locations work? Did you have any access
problems? Did it rain?
• Personnel – how were your cast/crew? Did anyone let you down?
How did you manage this?
• Planning – did your planning help? Do you think it could have
worked better? How?
• Next steps – do you need to re-film? Film more? Have you
changed your video? How/why?
4. TECHNICAL
I had access to a camera (SONY A6K) which allowed the quality
of the video to be high and noticed it through other peoples
feedback. I originally wanted it to have an old vintage camera
effect on the whole thing to give it an effect of a childhood video
diary. I found it difficult to find a free high quality green screen
effect that I wanted so I compromised and found some old
childhood footage of me and decided to just use a few second
of that instead like ed Sheeran's photograph music video.
Examples would have
used:
Ed Sheeran – photograph
My footage
I used a tripod as well which word very
well of shots that I shot by myself and it
worked well to get smooth steady
shots.
The only problem I had was just
organisation of things like forgetting to
bring my camera out or forgetting a
spare battery.
5. LOGISTICAL
With locations, I made my theme fit with the weather
conditions so I wouldn’t have to organise which days I film
what based on weather. It didn’t rain however I would have
liked to to try get some footage of that with my friends. There
were no conditions that I wouldn’t have wanted. Autumn
shows all the weather changes and during my panning and
evaluation I've mad it clear that the autumn theme is very
important.
6. PERSONNEL
I feel like my cast and crew were easily accessible for time
and dates of when I wanted to film. They helped make plans
based on the video and were willing to do anything that I
wanted to with the video. They less played a role for the
video and just allowed me to bring my camera with me to film
them.
7. PLANNING
The planning of the music video helped to some what. There
were things during the panning PowerPoint that helped me
more than others. For example scouting for locations and
knowing where I wanted to filmed was more useful than the
story boards to me. All of the practical planning was more
helpful to more than the visual planning. Another example is
the shot list. It gave me clear understanding of what I needed
to shoot, how to manage my time and made it more efficient.
• did your planning help? Do you think it
could have worked better? How?
8. EDITING
• Record your edit progress, decisions, problems, etc. in
this section
• Include screenshots with annotations, statements, etc
where possible
• Try to explain how you worked and justify why you chose
to work the way you did.
• Follow the structure and what to include on each slide as
this is necessary for evidence for assessment
• Pick notable moments in the editing process and discuss
them, what worked/didn’t work and why, how you adjusted
to problems. Discuss how you worked and what you
learned from the process
9. SPLIT SCREENS
I filmed 2 lots of videos Infront of a tv screen and copied them 4
different times. I placed them on top of each other and adjusted it
according to the track. I then used the focused on my first clip
and placed the crop effect on it and adjusted it to take up 25% of
the screen and positioned it at the top left of the screen. I then
repeated the process with the second clip that was the same and
moved it to the bottom right of the screen. I repeated the process
for the 2 differentiated videos and made sure everything was in
time.
I incorporated a split screen element into the video to change the
format from the rest of the video, so it made that particular frame
stand out with the vibrant colors.
In the future I want to repeat this method as I think it worked well
and it was simple to do.
10. COLOR ADJUSTING
I adjusted the colors of each frame throughout the entirety of the
video so that it could look visually pleasing as well as all aesthetically
fit together. I adjusted the brightness, contrast, color hue and
saturation. My aim when doing this was to make it fit the autumn
theme as much as possible, therefore showing the darker clips to
have some orange colors and the nature clips to show the vibrancy of
the natural colors showing in the frame.
11. EMBOSS EFFECT
I layers these two clips on top of one
another and applied the emboss effect
on the top clip. I went on the opacity
properties and changed the normal
effect to colour which adds rgb
distortion. This makes it look 3
dimensional by adding highlights and
shadows to different parts of the layer.
I chose this effect to add contrast from
the coloured shots and to make
certain frames stand out from the
rest. The frame I used Emboss effect
on was I frame I had used before and I
wanted to differentiate it from the
previous one.
12. OPACITY FADE
In the opening and closing scene of any significant moment like the
beginning, the end, the title screen etc, I had a gradual fade of the
footage as the video itself is very jumpy :It slows it down compared to
the fast clips. It stops the clips from coming to an abrupt ending by
fading. I think it worked well and it is an effect that I will use in the future
as it can be used throughout multi media.
13. WARP STABILIZER
EFFECT
When I started the editing process and added the clips
together I noticed how some clips were really shaky so
needed stabilizing in order to use then in the full footage. I
researched and watched tutorials and it led to me using a
warp stabilizer effect to steady the shaky camera. It worked
well in the video, and I now know that it may be a key tool I
use in the future. It is especially useful for use on footage
where I am filming on a motionary setting rather than a stable
one.
14. WHAT WENT WELL
[3 EXAMPLES]
- The cinematography – the way that it looked visually and
how it fit in with the themes that I wanted to create
- The editing – it was a quick process that I enjoyed and felt
like worked well with the styles I wanted to work. I felt like
when I was editing, I felt like I was working very efficiently.
- The visual effects – the visually effects I used I feel like
worked really well and made the video look to better
quality.
15. WHAT PROBLEMS DID
YOU HAVE?
- Time management – spent less time filming and getting
footage and more time in the editing process which was
unnecessary and I underestimated how quick I could edit.
If I had more time to film it would have allowed me to get
more footage and not repeat clips.
- Lack of footage – after I filmed all my footage and started
to edit it, I realise that my time table focused more on the
post production side which meant I had less footage to
use to edit. I ended up having to repeat the clips.
- Song choice – the song choice had a quick beat which
allowed the averaged clip to be 1.2 seconds. This made
the clips be fast past and could show much angles of the
same clip. It also was the main cause of there not being
enough footage and therefore I had to repeat old footage.
16. NEXT STEPS…
I think I need to focus more on the footage I take. I think its
important to focus on what is happening in them and I feel
like if I was to pick a better song then I could have learned
more about that. I've learned how I like to colour adjust which
has given me a better understanding on how to use premiere
pro.
