2. PRODUCTION LOG:
GUIDANCE
• This document is for you to track the progress of your
production – filming, editing and post-production.
• This is so you can track what you did and how you did it,
explaining and amendments and changes you made and
tracking the decisions that have shaped the practical
creation of your music video.
• The more detail you include about how you made your music
video, the better. The document is broken down in to two
sections, Filming and Editing, each of these is then made of
specific elements that occur in both.
• For each slide there is a prompt detailing what you should
include, delete the prompt after you have complete the slide.
• Remember, images often show what you’ve done more
effectively than words. Use text to explain an illustration.

3. FILMING
Technical- I used a cannon 650D to film which is a step up from the cannon 600 provided by college, the
650D has a self focusing feature which was really helpful when filming, it meant that I did not have to
worry about it always been In focus because a lot of the time it would do it by itself and be very crisp with
its recording. I decided to get around the lip syncing by wearing a balaclava which allowed me to instead
just sync up movements and gestures and focus more on the actual editing of my video. I never had any
problems when it came to camera batteries as I always carried a spare when filming.
Logistical- I believe my locations worked fairly well for the type pf video I was trying to create but had a
lot of problems with the light and weather conditions which prohibited how much I could actually film on
some days, I believe I would have got better shots had conditions been better on the days filming. When
filming with the drone the first time, I took it out was after college as it was the only time my mate was
available to come fly it for me, as it was already around five o’clock it was already beginning to get dark,
we also had the issue off battery life on the drone which runs out a lot quicker than anticipated thus
leading me to not gather all shots needed and a second day of drone filming was scheduled. The second
day went better even though it was raining a managed to gather some very good footage which lead me
to use it in my edit. I also had a major issue with recovering the files from the drone as when I first took
them from the drone my friend had sent me them via snapchat which put the resolution of the video down
leading for all of the footage to be blurry and unusable in my edit. I got around this problem by instead
getting him to airdrop me the footage instead which worked a lot better as the footage came through
looking more crisp and professional.

4. FILMING
Personnel- my cast mainly consisted of myself as well as my friend harry,
who helped a lot with the technical qualities of the camera when we were out
recorded, I also appeared in his video and he is in sections of mine, I got a lot
of my other mates on board about being in my video and was looking like at
one point there could be as many as 15-20 people In the background of my
video however, due to weather conditions many people decided to stay home
sheltered from the wet and cold that we faced on the day of filming, five of
them showed (not including me and harry) and they were a bit hesitant at the
start as they thought miming the actions just appeared cringey but as the
filming went on I think they understood that it would look ten times better in
the edit and I believe it did. Because of the outcome of this video when It
comes time to create my final project which I think I’m going to do another
music video, more people will turn up hopefully as it will make my video
appear more realistic.

5. FILMING
Planning- I think the planning stage went well but I did not stick to the original plan I
had in place, this was down to various factors, a big one being the weather which really
hindered my ideas as we could not get all the shots that I originally planned. Locations
wise I didn’t visit all that I planned to, one being the white horse. On the day that we
planned to go film here the weather conditions were not suitable as it rained throughout
the day making it very difficult to record properly without getting water on the camera
lens, losing focus and etc. editing wise I initially planned to do more than I did, for
example to planned to use a green screen for sections of my video, especially to use
for transitions something which I believe would’ve worked really well, however I did not
get round to using this because of limited time when I was out filming. Something else
that I planned to use were shots of large dogs however when it came to filming them
they did not cooperate and the footage wasn’t very good for a number of factors, mainly
lighting. Something I wanted to include in my video was the use of pyrotechnics
including flares to create some interesting aesthetic visuals.

6. FILMING
Next steps- when filming I had to go out and re-shoot one day because the
footage I gathered firstly was not at the level needed to complete the project thus
meaning I had to get higher quality shots, I feel like I accomplished this very well
as the footage I then gathered worked perfectly in my video and really helped me
fill in the large gaps that were left after the first day of filming. Because of this I feel
like when it comes to doing another music video there is a lot I would do
differently. Firstly I will ensure that I use filming time effectively to gain high quality
shots that can be used in the final edit. In addition to this I will plan my shot more
effectively for example when it came to filming It was very much a case of not
knowing where to start as there were a lot of factors I had to take into account
such as light conditions and weather.

PRODUCTION STILLS
Where appropriate add stills from when you were filming,
annotate where necessary
I used a drone to capture shots of my car for the video as well
as gathering footage of one of my locations, Byland abbey. I
did these drone shots as I believed it would add a different
dimension to my work and I think it worked how I thought it
would however, I had to add a VHS effect on some of the
drone clips as the quality was ruined by factors such a light
conditions and rain.
Car shots were captured by placing a camera at the side
of the road set up on a tripod, I drove past slowly so the
footage would be clear and the camera would not come
out of focus.

8. FILMING-
PRODUCTION STILLS
I managed to get five of my mates to play a part In my
video and had them in the background of my video
doing actions associated with the genre, I thought it
would make my video more realistic and believable of
I had people in it as you often see in these type of
videos large groups of lads with their faces covered, I
was aiming to get ten to fifteen people in the
background which would of looked a lot better than
just five people, but due to poor weather conditions a
lot of people backed out at the last minute. I filmed the
shots of me and my friends In low angles and we
decided that filming when it was getting dark would be
effective for my video as a lot of drill videos have very
dark settings.
In my video a lot of the shots taken were low angle
shots that were taken to portray power and
dominance which is a convention of drill, I think
because of the use of low angled shots it made the
video more realistic because we used camera
angles that would be used in an actual drill video.

9. FILMING-
PRODUCTION STILLS
This is a close up shot towards the beginning of my
video that worked nicely, when it came to editing I
transitioned out of this shot by adding an intense flash
as well as keying the colors on the balaclava to
continue changing.
I captured this shot of my friend on a moped by
opening the boot of my car and having someone sit in
the boot whilst driving very slowly in front whilst the
ped also followed at a slow speed, in the final edit I
added a color changing effect which I keyed to the
color of the mask as well as adding intense flashes in
time to the beat.

10. EDITING
I added a VHS effect at some points in my video which allowed me
to add a new dimension to my video which worked effectively, in
drill videos you will often see this VHS type of effect thus why I
used this in my own work to stay within the conventions of my
chosen genre.
It was as simple as importing the effect placing it on the
timeline above the desired clip, then you key out the
section of the VHS you don’t want to be shown so you
are left with the actual effect itself left with the footage,
you can play about with the opacity of the VHS and
decide how much you want to see
This section of my video was created by scaling
down the size of the main clip with the VHS effect
and adding a clip of trees mirrored against each
other. This is one of my favorite sections in the
video even though it is fairly simplistic to create it
worked well and looked semi professional to an
extent and fitted in time with the beat, I also I added
flashes to the beat and transitioned out of this by
adding these flashes also. I used this because I
have seen similar styles used in professional music
videos.

11. EDITING
This is what my timeline looked like,
as you can see there is a lot going
on and looks fairly messy, however it
made sense in my head and the lack
of organization never really played a
factor in my editing.
Throughout my video I made the colors of certain
things change, things like spray paint on walls, the
pattern on balaclava’s, lights, the sky etc. I did this by
selecting the “change color” and “change to color” once
the effect was applied you had to key which color you
would like to change and by playing around with the
hue transform and matching tolerance. You would
place points of where and when you would like things
to start changing color. I created what I think worked
really nicely, I tried to make this a consistent theme in
my work as I applied the same or similar color
changing effects throughout my video. I used this effect
because it made my video more interested and made it
visually pleasing to the viewer.

12. EDITING –
FILE MANAGEMENT
I kept all my work for this project saved onto a memory stick in a file called “music video” this
allowed me to keep track of my work whilst it all been in the same place.
My video footage was stored on a SD card which then I converted into a file on my desktop in my
old room titled “music video footage”, I then organized and placed the useful footage into premier in
preparation to place onto my time line, this made it very easy when it came to editing as all the
good stuff was in one place and was easy to sort through.
The audio for my song was downloaded through a YouTube downloader via google and then
stored in a file on the desktop and placed into my premier timeline, i cannot add an imagine to
show this as I do not have the computer on hand.
I made a file called “effects” on my desktop to keep all my downloaded effects from YouTube in
one place, things like the VHS effect, black bars and bullet holes were all kept here and made it
very easy when it came to throwing them on top of my footage.

13. EDITING –
SETTING UP PREMIERE
when setting up my timeline I added markers to
points In the song where the beat was so when it
came to editing I knew when to transition out of
shots as well s adding things like flashes and other
effects so that my video was in time and appeared
smooth to the viewer.
My video settings for my video
YouTube 1080p, format H.264. I
used these settings as I believed
it would look the best on YouTube
in the highest quality possible.
I saved all of my work for this project in
a folder on my memory stick titled
“music video” I have attached images for
evidence of my work. I did this because I
think when everything is In one place it a
lot easier to keep track of work. I titled
the premier file, “music video project
editing” as then I would know exactly
what it is. I also had other folders for
things like effects aswell as all the raw
footage so when it came to editing
everything was where I needed it neatly
organsied

14. EDITING –
IMPORTING FOOTAGE
Show how you imported your footage, your file set up in Premiere and how
you have organised your different docs [video, audio, etc]
My footage was originally on the SD card I used for filming I then imported of the
footage onto my college pc in a folder called “music video footage” once I had
done this I reviewed all footage and selected all the shots that I believed would
work best into premiere.
The audio was imported using a YouTube download website which allowed me to
download the file and add into my timeline, all I had to do was delete the original
video footage from the video and keep the audio track.
i imported all my effects by once again using a YouTube download website which
gave me the effect, I then placed all of my effects into a file named “effects” this
allowed me to organise all of my effects so that I knew exactly where they were as
well as been stored and laid out neatly. Something I tried to do within this project
was to lay out all of my work neatly and effectively so when it came to using it, it'd
be in the place I needed it to be.

15. EDITING –
WORKSPACE
This was my first time using premiere as well as editing software in general and I
believe I got my head around it fairly quickly by playing with the effects in addition
to timeline, playback window and tool bar. I think I was allocated fair time to learn
as well as create the project considering it was my first time.
As you can see in the top right my timeline was fairly messy and doesn’t look well
put together, however this messy kind of approach seemed to work in my head but
if I was to complete another project I would try and lay out my work In a neater
fashion to prevent confusion when editing as at points I would think one clip was
another and so on. I think one thing that allowed me to cut clips effectively and
precisely was the playback window as it would allow you to cut the clip exactly
where you wanted, the cutting tool also worked well for this.
Audio levels wise I didn’t really touch as I believed the audio for my video was on
point as it had already been professionally mixed and I didn’t want to mess about
and change what already worked so well, in future I might play around with audio
levels and see what I can create.

16. EDITING –
ASSEMBLY EDIT
The first thing that I did when it came to editing was adding the green marker points to
points where the beat was active in my audio, this is clearly showed at the top of my
timeline in the top right hand corner. This allowed me to switch between clips whilst looking
smooth and clean as well as showing me where certain effects should be used such as
flashes, fades in addition to colors changing, a theme that was ever present in my video. I
tried to cut back and fourth between my locations as that is a theme used regularly in drill
videos.
I big factor I decided to get around was lip syncing as I knew this would be very hard to do
as often professionals struggle with this. I alternately wore a balaclava in my video as it
allowed to instead focus on syncing the movements of my character instead which was a lot
easier to do than a lip sync. Moving forward in future projects I may try and do a lip sync
however in drill videos a major convention is that the characters will have their faces
covered.
I put my clips in by previewing them in the playback window and cutting them precisely to
where which part of the clips in wanted to include, I also used to cutting tool to do this. Once
this was done I dragged the clip onto the timeline in the desired place and added effects,
flashes and fades where suitable linking to the beat. I believe for a first attempt at creating a
music video my work appeared smooth and it links nicely between cuts.

17. EDITING –
REFINEMENT
I used color correction on some of the footage I
deemed to be to dark, using a luminar color
corrector within premiere I was able to make these
clips appear more bright as well as adding a
glowing red tint which I feel suited the theme of my
video well as red is an aggressive dominant color
and the drill genre also being associated with this
behavior.
I refined my initial edit to make it look better by adding cuts to the beat as well as
flashes and fades, this made my video appear more aesthetically pleasing the
viewers eye. I also added other effects such as colors continually changing and
downloaded effects like bullet holes coming onto the screen linked to the beat, this
made my video come across as more professional as there are certain scenes and
edits in my video that you would expect to see in an actual music video.
For some clips I added slight distortion where it was suitable which added a different
dimension to my work and created a new feel at certain points in the video.

18. EDITING –
COLOUR CORRECTION/SFX
Using a luminar color corrector within premiere it allowed me to add a red tint
to some clips whilst also making them appear brighter. Color correction was
used throughout my video as you can see there is a consistent theme of colors
changing. Some of my scenes are also in black and white, this was created by
turning down the saturation on the color wheel.
By nesting certain sequences I was able to add effects on top and correct
color and once I had found something I thought that worked I would copy the
effect onto the desired clips and then nest. This allowed me to keep the color
correction consistent in my edit which I thought came across well as all of the
clips I desired to be corrected looked consistent.

19. EDITING –
EXPORT
I exported my completed project and saved it to my desktop, I uploaded the
video to YouTube at 1080p, 60 fps, format H.264. I did this because it’s the best
quality version that can be uploaded to YouTube. I called the file “completed
music video” and uploaded to YouTube under the name jack Oyston “final
music video”. I did this because it would be easy to find and it clearly describes
what the video actually is.
