2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

How to Create Map Views in the Odoo 17 ERPCeline George
The map views are useful for providing a geographical representation of data. They allow users to visualize and analyze the data in a more intuitive manner.
3. RESEARCH
Strengths:
For my research, whilst working on my planning PowerPoint, I watched a selection of 5 music
videos from different artists. I analysed the use of different camera shots and angles, as
well as the different lighting and colour themes used throughout the videos. Whilst working
on my case study PowerPoint, I looked more in depth at camera shots, angles and
movements. I also researched different editing techniques such as types of cuts, special
effects, sound and colourizing. I also researchedgenre conventions and different types of
intertextuality. This research helped my product because it gave me inspiration for how I
would like my video to look. It helped give me ideas of different shots, lighting, overlays etc.
that I may have wanted to include in my video.
Weaknesses:
Weaknesses of my research are that I could have watched and analysed more music videos
similar to the style I was wanting to create for my music video. If I had done this then I could
have had more ideas to show in my planning PowerPoint and could have had more
inspiration which may have showed in my video and helped improve it. I also could have put
more research into the music videos I had already analysed. For example, in my case study I
have written about shots, angles, editing genre conventions etc. this research may have been
helpful if it was also applied into my planning PowerPoint.
4. PLANNING
Strengths:
For my planning, I created a mind map, storyboard and a rip-o-matic. As well as creating
shot lists, a breakdown of the song lyrics and research into locations, risk assessments and
contingency plan. I found creating the rip-o-matic test reel and storyboard helpful when
creating my video as it helped me visualise how I would like my video to look when filming
and editing.
Weaknesses:
I think I could have put more into my contingency plan. Due to COVID restrictions, lots of
displays were closed or unavailable to access so I was unable to film all the shots for my
video that I had hoped for. I was also unable to film at my backup location, which was the
solution I have written in my contingency plan. If I had included this as a potential problem
in my plan, then I would have been prepared and had other options or solutions in place
to make up for the shots I couldn’t film.
5. TIME MANAGEMENT
Research and Planning:
The research and planning for the music video was carried out over several weeks. Due to COVID
restrictions, I am in college every two weeks, meaning I have a week doing learning at home. Whilst
at home I work on my case study which helps me in my research of filming and editing and planning.
Planning was carried out and presented on a PowerPoint during the weeks at college. I think I
managed my time with these tasks easily and was able to complete and submit them in time.
Filming:
Filming for my music video was done during one of my college weeks at home. However, once I got
onto editing, I realised I needed more shots. I was unable to film anymore shots other than the ones I
already had. So although I was able to complete filming in time and complete my music video, if I had
more time I would have ben able to get more shots which would’ve added more variety to the video.
Editing:
For editing I also had a week in college to complete. Editing took me a lot longer than the filming and
research stages as it was my first time using ‘Adobe Premiere Pro’, except for when I made my rip-o-
matic. I didn’t complete editing in time at college, but it was the holidays right after, which allowed me
for extra time to complete. I was able to finish editing my video with a couple extra days at home.
6. TECHNICAL QUALITIES - CAMERA
When filming this shot for the time-lapse, I was sat at the back
of the car. I had to zoom in to keep the shot in frame. I wanted
to create a shot similar to the one in the ‘4Ever’ video by
Clairo, except mine was filmed in the evening time, and hers
was shot during the day.
For this shot, I was inspired by the ‘1:45am’ music video. I
wanted a wide shot looking over the city, similar to the video.
For the shot I took, I zoomed in slightly so it was just the
windows in frame. Then, when it was recording I slowly
zoomed out. The difference between my shot and the other
music video is that I kept the windows in the frame for mine.
Also, the skyline is different with slightly different lighting
and a more grainy effect. My shot is less grainy and has less
of a skyline, but more just overlooking the city in general.
7. TECHNICAL QUALITIES – EDITING/POST
When editing, I made sure that each cut was to the beat of the song. Sometimes the
pace will be slower or faster, but I ensured that it cut to a beat in the song. Although
lots of music videos cut to the beat, one example of this is the ‘Blinding Lights’ music
video by The Weeknd. Our music videos are both very different however, as his follows
a storyline whereas mine is more of a montage.

I used a color correction and also used an overlay/filter as I wanted
my video to have a slightly grainy look to give it more of that
montage/ homemade feel. Lots of artists also have color correction
added when editing their music videos. One example of a music video
with color correction is the ‘Gold’ music video by Brockhampton.
Although they have different colored lighting, you can tell there is an
overlay added to give it a more homemade feel and to keep all the
shots cohesive with each other.

8. AESTHETIC QUALITIES
I think my work looks good overall. I think most of the colours are cohesive with each other, I like
how a lot of the shots have bright, luminous lights which contrasts with the darker, moodier lighting
and the darker lighting of the shots filmed in the evening time. To improve, if I had the
opportunity, I would've filmed more shots at another location to add more variety. Also, I would
have filmed more of the daytime shots in the video during the evening, so it all matches the
overall mood of the video.
Strengths:
There were lots of different shots with fluorescent and neon lights. This can be appealing to the
audience as it stands out and contrasts with the dimmer lighting in the rest of the video.
Weaknesses:
Some of the shots were filmed during the day. As it was good weather on my day of filming, they
stand out amongst the other shots and don't blend in as well with the rest of the footage.
9. AUDIENCE APPEAL
I believe I have appealed to my target audience of 16-24 with my final product.
My music video is a montage style, and it was filmed at the 'National Media
Museum'. Because of this, there are lots of shots that are visually appealing. There is
lots of different colours and lights that make it enjoyable to watch. Also, the location
that it was filmed at is popular among this age group as a lot of the displays are
also very visually appealing. Most of this museum shows technology such as tv, film,
games and media overall and how it is advancing/ has advanced. These displays
and the visually appealing aesthetic is what attracts this audience, and I believe I
also showcased this in my video.
11. FEEDBACK 1
What did you like about the product?
'I enjoyed the video overall. I particularly liked the intro, where it switches from the
driving time-lapse to the lights.'
What improvements could have been made to the product?
'To improve I would say to slow down the clips of the driving, it feels like it is going
too fast for the song.'
12. FEEDBACK 2
What did you like about the product?
'I liked the contrast with the darkness and bright lights. I liked how it was in sync with
the music. It was very colourful and easily watchable, the scenes in it were quite
intriguing.'
What improvements could have been made to the product?
'I feel that some of the clips were repeated a little too often. Because of this, it
started to feel as if the song was going on too long. It would have been even better
if different scenes were added to break up the video a bit more and make it less
repetitive.'
13. FEEDBACK 3
What did you like about the product?
'I found the whole video enjoyable overall. I liked the different colours throughout the
video, this made it more appealing. I liked the part where the lighting changed along
with the lyrics later on in the song.'
What improvements could have been made to the product?
'I feel like the driving time-lapses were moving too fast paced for the song which
made it seem out of place. To improve, I would say maybe slow down the time-lapse
parts, and also possibly centre the camera in the middle of the dashboard so it
doesn't feel out of frame.'
14. PEER FEEDBACK SUMMARY
What do you agree with from your peer feedback?
I agree with the recommended improvements 'from feedback 2'. As I stated earlier in
my own evaluation of the video that I would've filmed more shots to change things up
throughout the video. I agree that at certain points it feels repetitive.
What do you disagree with from your peer feedback?
I agree and disagree with the points made from feedback '1' and '3'. I agree that
midway through the video, some particular shots of the driving time-lapse felt rushed
and the camera could've been centred more. However, I disagree with the shots being
too quick for the intro and outro of the song. In my opinion, I felt that they were the
right speed for that part of the song.
15. PEER FEEDBACK SUMMARY
Based on my peer feedback, if I were to make any changes I would go
back into 'Premiere Pro' and adjust the speed of the driving time-lapse
clips I have included in middle of the video. I would also zoom in them
clips in order to centre them more if I was unable to re-film these same
shots. If I had the opportunity, I would also go and film some new shots to
include in the video, so it isn't as repetitive at times. I think that applying
this constructive criticism to my work would help improve the end product.
