Louisa Clark s Life In Me Before You, By Jojo Moyes
Louisa Clark has never really lived; She is just an ordinary girl living in her ordinary life. She is
scared to leave her tiny town and has never even thought about leaving. Her life changes when she
takes a six month job as a caregiver. Her patient is Will Traynor, a quadriplegic. He has lived a very
experienced and thrilling life before his accident. Me Before You by Jojo Moyes, brings together two
people that are completely different. Jojo Moyes portrays one of the main characters, Louisa Clark, as
a very ordinary individual but with Will s help she discovers her true self. The novel is set on Louisa s
ultimate goal which is to try to change Will s mind on committing suicide. Louisa is very determined
to make Will remember why life is worth living. She researches different activities that they could do
such as going to the racetrack, skydiving, bungee jumping etc. Will used to be into world wide travel.
After failing to convince Will to go to Paris with her she believes that she can t change his mind. You
don t get it, Clark. I don t want to go there in this this thing. He gestured at the chair, his voice
dropping. I want to be in Paris as me the old me (Moyes 195). Nonetheless, she kept trying. The most
successful activity that Louisa comes up with is traveling to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

things she would have never done, like scuba diving and wind surfing. He was opening up a new

Analysis Of Luria And Rubin ( 1974 )
Introduction
Subject investigated: Gender stereotypes
Details and aim of replicated study: Luria and Rubin (1974)
Background literature: Previous studies about gender stereotypes enforced on people include; Effect of
infant s perceived gender on adolescents ratings of the infant by Degelman, Dvorak, and Homutoff
and Cowan (1983). These studies highlight feminine and masculine traits. They ask middle school
students to rate a baby on each of those traits.
Rationale: Our group decided to examine the differences in how boys and girls are described. We used
a baby, whose gender is not mentioned, as the control. We knew that specific sets of expectations
based on gender are enforced at a young age. We thought adjectives used to describe a baby could
highlight stereotypical gender roles.
Aim / Hypothesis: We believe it is more likely for the baby to be described based on appearance when
told it is a girl and when told it is a boy to be described based on their potential and whether they
looked smart . Our aim is to highlight the differences between males and females using stereotypical
gender roles.
Method
Design: 15 students were each asked the same question, could you tell us 5 words or phrases that
describe this baby? . 5 were told it was a girl, 5 were told it was a boy, and 5 weren t told a gender.
We decided to use 15 people so that we could use the non gendered descriptions from 5 of the
participants and compare them to the descriptions of boys and

What Is The Estimation Of The Forest Femining Methods
With increase in the amount, quality and accessibility of the remote sensing data on one hand, and
advancement, ease of use and capability of the open source machine learning and statistical tools, on
the other hand, machine learning approaches have become very popular and powerful methods for
estimation of the forest biomass in the recent years. cite{Iftikhar}
By far, linear regression is the most well understood algorithm in statistics and machine learning
compared to any other machine learning tools. Table 2 summarizes the studies that has been done on
estimation of the biomass using LiDAR techniques.
Linear mixed effects (LME) regression is the extended version of the linear regression model and

There are several ways to select the best features. cite{Thomas}. Also, it has been shown that
selection of the number of the features for classification, neighbors and the predictors are very
deterministic in the quality of the classification cite{NLi}.
Random Forest (RF) and Support Vector Machine (SVM) are two machine learning approaches that
has been successfully implemented in several studies and resulted in the significantly better results
compared to KNN or other regression models. For example, in the study by Fassnacht et
al.cite{Fassnacht 2014} using LiDAR and Hyperspectral data, it has been shown that RF model
produce a better forest aboveground biomass prediction compared to other tested methods.
RF is the ensemble classification technique based on the many random decision trees classifiers.
Decision tree is the classification approach that relate the target point to the predictor based on the
simple decision criteria. Decision tree can easily become unstable and result in the very complex
decision boundaries, therefore Random forests are used to improve the accuracy of the prediction and
also controls the over fitting cite{Thomas}. It has been shown that a large number of features can be
handled by RF cite{Liai}. RF also, has been reported to have higher accuracy in predicting biomass

How often have you attended an event and found that you were totally overwhelmed and under
prepared? I see it happen all the time and it makes my heart sink because, seriously, those are missed
opportunities that you will never get back.
There are many large, and valuable, events scheduled around North America (and the world, for that
matter) that are a gold mine of opportunity when it comes to learning and networking. Attending these
events is one of the best ways to grow your business and develop valuable and meaningful contacts,
too.
I like to be prepared before arriving at these events whether they are the large, once a year type, or
whether they are regular local networking opportunities. I know that, for many entrepreneurs, you just
don t know what you don t know. I want to share some of my best tips for seizing the opportunity and
really getting the best return on investment possible.
1. First and foremost, create a plan for the year and decide which events you will be attending and
why. There are so very many choices

Frogs And Toad Book Report
This nonfiction selection is about frogs and toads, it informs the reader about the essential facts about
frogs and toads as well as introducing additional information you probably don t know. Speaking
about this, there were specific sections I enjoyed reading about more than others. For instance, I
cherished reading about how adult frogs cared for their offspring, it demonstrated the grand amount of
devotion certain animals provide for their young. Indeed, this impacted me because it portrayed now
animals have emotions too, and don t just care about themselves. For example, the African bullfrog
exhibits valiant actions because it attempts to ward off danger to any animal that poses a threat to its
eggs and tadpoles. It goes to such extent ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Considering this, I would definitely continue reading other books on this topic because they captivate
me and I don t find them dull whatsoever. Further, this book contained multitudinous information
about frogs and toads, but the majority of it was simple facts and I want to read another book that is
complex and has facts that most people wouldn t know. However, this book was adequate and has
encouraged me to read other books about frogs. Equally, I find frogs engaging because their features
are unique compared to other organisms. To illustrate, frogs have skin that they can breathe through
and they don t have rib cages, making them one of the most interesting animals in the animal
kingdom. Specifically, I m longing to read a book about glass frogs because their skin is see through
and even scientists don t know why that is. In conclusion, there is no doubt that I would read another
book about frogs because there s a grand quantity that I don t know about them and I m yearning to
find out. They re such engrossing creatures that have qualities that I want to read about as well as
animals are my passion and all this would guide me towards my goal of becoming a

Psychedelic Drugs Research Paper
Psychedelic Drugs
Medical interest in psychedelic drugs has been renewed, but is it possible to overcome their negative
stigma and association with counterculture to move forward with their potential medical promise?
Psychedelic drugs are poised to be the next major mental breakthrough in health care, yet studying any
type of illegal drug is often met with rejection, backlash, or tight regulations (Bushak, 2015). These
drugs, if handled correctly, could potentially change the lives of millions of patients across America.
Many would suggest that the risk is too high, but in which way do psychedelics present more risks
than heavily addicting narcotics or alcohol? This treatment would allow thousands of individuals to
manage pain levels, anxiety, and depression in a whole new manner. Legalizing psychedelic drugs for
medical purposes would be beneficial to society because of their potential medicinal and therapeutic
treatments that heavily outweigh the observed risks.
Psychedelics are generally considered as a substance in which the primary action that occurs when
used is altered cognition and perception (Psychedelics, 2016, para. 1). Psychedelic drugs can include a

Transition Into The New Material And Learning Experience
It s unreal that the first semester is already over. As I looked back on the time spent in English 120 I
have mixed feelings. It was tough work, and a lot of it but in the long run I truly believe I have such
stronger writing skills. The hard work paid off and has significantly benefitted me. On the first day of
class I said, I hope I can gain the knowledge to write a strong, solid, long essay. I hope a I can learn to
transition into the new material and learning experience.
I believe I completed these goals. I wrote my longest essay in this class and I m proud that I
accomplished that. I would never know what to write before this class to make an essay so long. I
wrote all the essays in this class without even worrying that I wouldn t have enough information. I
find it ironic because my biggest concern was I wouldn t be able to make my essays long enough. The
first two essays were tough but I began to transition into the workload that came along with the essay
and it just became routine. Transition happened on it own through practicing my writing in my essays.
It amazing how much I improved; my first essay I received a seventy two percent and my last graded
one I received an eighty seven percent. Just between those two essays you can see how my writing
skills improved by fifteen percent. Although, my organization skills aren t the best they have improved
so much since the beginning essay. I ve also learnt all types of writing that can be put into an essay. An

The Thirteen Colonies
13 English Colonies Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina, Virginia, Delaware, New York,
Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Rhode Island, New Hampshire, Connecticut, Maryland
were the thirteen colonies all had a different reason to be a colony. The thirteen colonies were divided
into three different areas. The middle colonies were Pennsylvania, New York, New Jersey, and
Delaware. The southern colonies were Maryland, Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, and
Georgia. and the northern colonies were Massachusetts, New Hampshire,Connecticut, and Rhode
Island and they were all governed very differently. Whether the laws were different or prices of crops
and medicines. The price of taxes from tea or the stamp tax all the colonies have different ways of
living and surviving. Maybe in some colonies people don t have as much food so food might be rashed
differently or maybe it s money. All the colonies have a different reason for being there own. A large
middle class consisted mainly of farmers who owned their land, shopkeepers, and craftworkers.
Unskilled workers and farmers who rented their land ranked among the poor, or lower sort. In
addition, by the mid 1700 s, about 20 percent of the colonists were slaves of African descent. Slaves
lived in all the mainland colonies, though they were most in the South (Virginia). Despite all the
differences all the colonies had one thing in common they were all ruled by King George. All the

The Evolving United States Government Essays
Like nature, the United States government has evolved to meet the demands of an ever growing
population, the increasing terrorist threat, and a new state of mind in terms of what government should
look like. Each branch of the federal system plays a key role in controlling the populace. The
Executive branch handles day to day maintenance of the federal government, makes sure laws are
enforced and carried out, as well as represents the U.S. to foreign interests. The Legislative branch
passes laws and allocates funds for use in running the federal government and providing assistance to
the states. The Judicial branch hears cases that involve disputes between interpretations of the laws or
those that challenge them. A delicate balance ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

what changes have been made to each power? The executive branch has grown the most since the late
1800 s. Abraham Lincoln used his position as Commander in Chief, and used the Chief Executive

suspended liberties (habeas corpus). This showed the executive branch gained power in times of war,
causing it to have more power than the other branches (Yoo, John). Theodore Roosevelt used all
powers of the president to further his agendas, without extending from the Constitution. In his Square

as well as, more legislative powers for the president. ( American... ). Woodrow Wilson s New Freedom

Patriarchy like the dance hall text is broken down into bits and pieces. Patriarchy in dancehall music
was almost a ideology or a way of thinking that made the Jamaicans or people that listened conform to
the social norms instructed through the music. It was the wave of dominance that and referred to the

Summary Of Wired For War
Wired for War: The Robotics Revolution and Conflict in the 21st Century written by Peter Warren
Singer. In his book, Mr. Singer explores and supports his theory of how technology is quickly and
decisively changing the way the U.S. fights wars. This book was written in 2009 and the author
provides historical data up to 2009 on how the military relies on technology in the battlefield. Mr.
Singer s credentials include a Ph.D. in Government from Harvard and a BA from the Wilson School of
Public and International Affairs at Princeton2. He has worked with numerous U.S. government
agencies as advisor and continues to provide his services in that capacity. He has published books

Singer describes Iraq operations as they were being performed in 2008 with the threat of Improvised
Explosive Devices, IEDs. The Explosive Ordnance Disposal, EOD, teams were tasked with defeating
this threat, roving about the battlefield to find and defuse the IEDs before they could explode and kill.
3 Robots such as Packbot and Talon were used to disarm IEDs which save lives of Soldiers and
civilians. The proliferation of technology in the battlefield can be seen in today s combat environment
on the ground, sea and air and will continue to grow. He states that man s monopoly of warfare is
being broken because digital weapons such as Packbot, Talon, SWORDS, Predator, Global Hawk and
many others are a sign that we are entering the era of robots of war. 4 He supports his theory of the
proliferation of technology in weapons by looking at industry growth by providing quantifiable data of
rapid growth in industry to meet demands. As he states in 1999, there were nine companies with
federal contracts in homeland security. By 2003, there were 3,512. In 2006, there were 33,890. 5 Mr.
Singer then provides a history of robots, trends, and what we can expect in the future. The book also
provides a glimpse of what the author believes can be expected on future battlefields and changes that
he thinks U.S. policy makers and military leaders need to address. Some of the changes that can be
affected concern law of war, robots role in war, level of robot authority to fight wars and robot

Indian Tribe And Indian Tribes
Tribal sovereignty which states in Maynard v Narrangansett Indian Tribe, 798 F Supp 94 (DRI, 1992)
that Indian Tribes are distinct and independent communities that retain their natural rights of the
Indian Tribe. Indian Tribes and their members are immune from common law suits. Indian Tribes
members are exempt from suits unless congress has authorized the suit.
ISSUE
1. Can a member of the Chippewa Indian Tribe have their property, on public school grounds,
searched?
2. Can the county search warrant be valid to search a Reservation and can the sheriffs legally search
such property?
3. Can police search beyond the property issued in the warrant?
4. Did the county sheriffs have any valid evidence to charge the Weathers?
5. Can Isabella County be held liable for wrongful arrest?
6. Can the police be held accountable for destroying artifacts?
BRIEF ANSWER
Songaa of the Chippewa Indian Tribe is allowed to be searched in public schools because she is off the
reservation, and the school has a legal right to search her. The county search warrant is not valid with
the tribal police because county search warrants do not comply with the tribal court. Another issue
with the current warrant is that the police did not have any invitation to come onto the property.
Therefore, the Isabella county warrant is not valid and the police officers cannot legally search the
Weathers home. If the warrant was valid, the police could not search beyond Songaa s bedroom unless
the police had probable

employees and students to reduce greenhouse gases (GHG) emissions. As an initial step in pursuit of
its long term goal, Harvard committed to an immediate goal of reducing its net GHG emissions
resulting from existing operations and future growth by 30% relative to its 2006 baseline by 2016 (
Greenhouse Gas Reduction Goal, 2013). The Green Harvard Initiative, together with the Harvard s
Office of Sustainability and the Environmental Health Safety Department have taken the lead to
promote and implement initiatives related to GHG emissions reduction.

Due to its size, some Harvard facilities also need to comply with different regulatory reporting
requirements, such as the Massachusetts GHG Reporting regulation for facilities emitting more than
5,000 MTCDE (Macrae, 2016). Again, data scrutiny and data management are essential to present
cohesion on those diverse reports.
Last but not least, besides data quality and quantity availability, many variables may still hinder the
ability to evaluate the effectiveness of energy conservation measures (ECMs).
The objective of this study is to evaluate the effectiveness of specific ECMs deployed in Harvard s
buildings based on the data provided by the university.
Definition of Boundary
The ECM projects means to benefit the Harvard goal of 30% reduction in absolute emissions in 2016
according to the 2006 GHG emissions baseline ( Our plan , 2014). The Harvard s Office of
Sustainability and the Environmental Health Safety Department have selected 15 projects to be further
analyzed by this study. These projects were pre selected based on the best quality of the data available.
Most of the selected projects were based on electricity related savings involving light/lamps
technology improvement and/or occupancy sensors implementation. Other projects were related to
compressors and refrigerators improvement. However, on a first evaluation, it was concluded that
most of the projects could not be considered for evaluation of effectiveness due to the lack of data

Hot Rod Vs Napoleon Dynamite
Hot Rod vs. Napoleon Dynamite On one hand, Hot Rod is cool beans ,on the other, Napoleon
Dynamite is flippin sweet! Both these weird humored comedies have various on the surface aspects
that generate similarity, yet different components of each film set the two apart. The plot of these
movies are more different than they are alike. Napoleon Dynamite is set in a small town and has a
fairly insignificant plot: Pedro for class president. Napoleon, himself, is an awkward teenager trying to
help his friend. Comparing this to Hot Rod, there is a step up. The plot of the Hot Rod showcases a
fairly more significant than that of Napoleon Dynamite. Rod Kimble is an awkward adult who is

Napoleon and his friends retain PG humor with comments that are so simply odd a viewer has to
laugh, What the flip was Grandma doing at the sand dunes? Rod and his crew, though, amp up their
humor level to PG 13 with drug use, crude humor, and profanities. A considerable amount of the
humor in Hot Rod relies on violence to draw laughter from the audience, You re wrong, Frank. I m not
a kid, I m a man. I am gonna get you better, and then I m gonna beat you to death! Violence is nearly
absent in Napoleon Dynamite with the exception of Uncle Rico launching a steak at Napoleon s face.
There is a minute romance in Hot Rod with Rod and Denise, yet there is an even more nonexistent one
in Napoleon Dynamite with Napoleon and Deb: almost nonexistent. Napoleon Dynamite is a movie
that almost anyone could watch and enjoy. Hot Rod, however, is a hit or miss movie. The
controversial topics of Hot Rod could also be concerning for parents, whereas parents would easily let
their children watch Napoleon Dynamite. Napoleon Dynamite and Hot Rod are the same type of
movie on the surface, but their differences in plot and humor display how they cater to different
audiences. Napoleon Dynamite remains an enjoyable movie with a steady pace while Hot Rod goes on
as not resolute. These two classic movies have certain aspects that both set them apart from one
another as well as adding to their

How Legionnaire s Disease Is An Important Public Health...
Introduction
Legionnaire s disease is an important public health problem that can cause substantial morbidity and
mortality.1 This bacterial infection is caused primarily by the gram negative bacteria, Legionella
pneumophila, found in freshwater environments throughout the world. 2, 3
Legionnaires disease was initially described in 1976, after a major respiratory outbreak among
attendees of an American Legion convention.4 L. pneumophila causes a severe inflammatory
pneumonia that primarily affects susceptible patients as a result of advanced age, underlying
debilitating conditions or immunosuppression.5 Environmental risk factors such as cooling towers or

11Macrolides, doxycycline, and quinolones are the most commonly prescribed effective antibiotics,
and preventive measures have been widely adopted in public and private institutions. 12
Public health efforts have largely focused on the identification of outbreaks of legionellosis, followed
by investigation and source control. The recent outbreak in the city of New York has emphasized the
need to recognize Legionnaires disease as a common community and hospital acquired pneumonia.
Health care workers should have a high clinical suspicion of L. pneumophila in any patient with
unexplained pneumonia and risk factors for Legionnaire s disease. Routine testing has been
discouraged for all outpatients with community acquired pneumonia and further testing should be
assessed on a case by case basis. This review summarizes the epidemiology, pathogenesis, diagnosis
and management of Legionnaires disease. A better understanding of the risks associated with
Legionnaires disease would allow state and local entities to better target preventive measures and
improve clinician awareness.
Epidemiology
Almost 40 years ago, Legionella pneumophila was initially recognized as the cause of a major
respiratory outbreak among attendees of an American Legion convention at a hotel in Philadelphia.4
Since the first description of Legionnaire s disease, surveillance schemes have been implemented in
several countries including the United

Evaluation Of A Business Training
Consequently, operation expense and overhead expense can be alleviated in companies which used
outside experts services.
3.2. Increment competency in companies Handling a variety of HR activities besides the core activity
by employers would not bring useful consequences for organisations. Thus, by outsourcing, they can
concentrate on their core competence which might be included in the application of various policies in
different businesses. For instance, as stated by Belcourt (2006) designing products is one of the major
activities in NIKE. Contracting out non core HR tasks provides free time for managers to pay more
attention and attempt to the value added activities such as leadership development, innovation and
customer services. Hence, diminution of HR administrative duties like employees pension, benefits
and payroll helps mangers to be strategists to improve companies competitive advantages.
3.3. Professional expertise
Getting benefits from the experience and skills of outside providers can be the other externalization s
advantages. As HR laws and regulations tend to be complicated in some area, employers may make a
decision to externalize some works to specialized companies which are updated with changing
government regulations and have specific expertise needed in special fields. For example, in a
professional training company because of the availability of expert co workers, staff would have more
opportunity to develop their knowledge and proficiency.

Chinese History And The Chinese Tradition
Chinese history has witnessed the governing styles of many different dynasties throughout its history.
Both the Tang and Yuan dynasties had expansionist ideologies, and both attempted to reallocate
workload under their administrations. While the Tang government was focused on management and
focused (specialization?) of tasks and services, the Yuan dynasty was less able to fully control its
territory and people. The Yuan dynasty s shaky regime, when contrasted with the relative stability of
the Tang, highlights their differences in focus and implementation of legislation.
The Tang views on how to govern their large empire were steeped in Chinese tradition. They believed
that the country was so large, one man could not hope to rule it (1). Thus, they should enfeoff their
relatives and therefore disseminate power across the land so that no one man is too strong (2,3). In
contrast, the Mongols believed that the vast territory that they had acquired needed to be divided by
stark, strict lines. Ethnic and occupational divisions were cleaved within bureaucratic and social
spheres (Governing China 53). These ideological differences highlight the source of these differences
between dynasties: while the Tang was based in a rich native cultural history, the Yuan was a foreign
power exacting influence in an unfamiliar region. This difference would color all other parts of the
dynasties governance. The extent to which the Tang stretched in its prime could only be compared to

like the clock stopped and time stood still. Now, as strange as it sounds, imagine those two feelings
combining. This surreal state seems to describe the mood of the twenty line poem We Have Not Long
to Love by playwright and poet Tennessee Williams. This poem reflects that feeling when you know
there s no time and you must act quickly, but time seems not to move. The word choice, in the
beginning, reflects a rushed feeling We have not long to love. / Light does not stay. (Williams 1 2).
Then the poem suddenly changes the mood to relaxed, like there s enough time for anything, In
silence I have watched you / comb your hair. (7 8). Further statements, I could but did not, reach / to
touch your arm. / I could, but do not, break / that which is still. (11 14) give the impression that he is
indecisive and that he has time to both make up and change his mind. The last four lines are ... Show

of an rhythm cracking line break after the word break . (Almost the faintest whisper / would be shrill.)

The Importance Of Complications In Healthcare
Since the surveillance has been redirected by the Center for Disease Control in 2012 from ventilator
associated pneumonia (VAP) to ventilator associated events (VAE), which the focus is on the
preventable harms associated with being mechanically ventilated (AHRQ, 2017). The preventable
harms associated with a patient being mechanically ventilated include VAP, ventilator associated
complications (VAC), and infection related ventilator associated complications (IVAC). Being able to
meet my HealthPeople 2020 objective of decreasing VAE s within my agency s intensive care unit

Assessing, preventing and managing pain plays an important role in patients experiencing delirium,
which in turn poor pain management can become a risk factor for many different other problems for
the patient. Dealing with mechanically ventilated patients it can be difficult to assess a patients pain
effectively, but using a proper pain assessment tool can be beneficial. Many also want to increase a
patient s sedation, but truly assessing a patient s pain might be the problem. Using sedation on a
patient that is mechanically ventilated can be necessary, but it is imperative to perform both
Spontaneous Awakening Trials (SAT) and Spontaneous Breathing Trials (SBT) on every patient to
maximize the potential for weaning a patient off the ventilator. The choice of Analgesia and Sedation
can be assessed properly using the Richmond Agitation Sedation Scale (RASS) and can decrease the
chances of a patient becoming over sedated. Choosing between analgesia and sedation can affect the
weaning process, length a patient is ventilated, and how long a patient is in the ICU and potentially
developing delirium. Monitoring and Managing Delirium is so important because up to 81% of

Reactive Attachment
Development is an essential and mandatory constituent of human life that operates on multiple levels.
It is a precise process, and there are a number of factors that affect its effectiveness. In particular, the
development of a child is determinant of the adolescent behaviors, uniqueness and intelligence.
Therefore, a considerable degree of weight is placed on the components that lead to the maturity of the
child. In the development of a child, one of the key principles is called attachment. Just as safe
attachment between the caregiver and the child can result in successful physical, mental and social
development, vulnerable attachment can yield damaging consequences for the child in these areas
(DeMulder, Denham, Schmidt, Mitchell, 2000). Reactive attachment disorder is a likely outcome of
unsafe attachment that eventually restricts the child s capacity to emotionally and socially connect
with other individuals, while destroying the cognitive ability as well (Crosson Tower, 2013). This
paper presents a detailed discussion on the attachment disorder in children and its impact on child
development. Reactive Attachment Disorder The term attachment refers to the ... Show more content

While improper attachment between the care provider and the child may put the latter at risk of
developing psychosocial problems, not every child with unsafe attachment develops reactive
attachment disorder (Kennedy Kennedy, 2004). A couple of variants of reactive attachment disorder
have been discovered. Restrained reactive attachment disorder develops in a child who is aloof and
socially and emotionally detached, shows resistance towards love and holds back the emotions.
Unrestrained reactive attachment disorder involves the child showing impartial sociability and
expressing more friendliness towards unknown persons than the primary care

Creating Change within Organizations HCS587
David Harrell
16 January, 2012 *
The Concord Bookshop is a small town bookstore with a 64 year history and a cultural appeal enjoyed
by the citizens of the town. In recent years the economic environment created fierce competition for
the bookstore, coupled with a need for innovative technology meant a need for restructuring. The
financial status of the bookshop was in grave distress. Fearing financial ruin the board members made
a unanimous decision to implement significant changes. However, the board did not take the necessary
steps of including the appropriate stakeholders in the change process and obtaining employee support.

Behaviour Change Change can be successful if a company or group within the organization changes
the way an individual presents oneself (Spector, 2010). Behavior change is based on how an
individual works within the environment. The employees of Concord Bookshop were not consulted
therefore did not have an opportunity to verbalize their concerns or provide input to assist the
company to move the bookstore in a new direction. The management team was aware of the financial
distress and was willing to participate in any financial changes required. The employees of the
bookstore had an abundance of knowledge and experience that may have contributed to ending
financial turmoil (Schein, 2011). Open dialogue between the employees and owners may have
facilitated the development and collaboration of new ideas in a competitive environment. The new
strategies could have provided a new direction for the bookstore. According to Burnes, in discussing
Kurt Lewin s Change Model, for change to be effective within a group there has to be a collective
approach by each member of the group (2004).
Conclusion
The Concord Bookshop was a well respected historical bookstore facing financial challenges. While
the bookstore employed knowledgeable and dedicated employees, the owners and board members did

The Characters Of The Epic Hero And Beowulf
Celebrated and celebritized by the people, heros are typically perceived in epic poems as larger than
life characters with extraordinary characteristics who defeat evil and represent good. On the other
hand, villains, seen as ravenous, heartless, beasts terrorize the helpless people for no reason are not
sympathized. Displaying this common outlook on the hero and villain is the epic poem, Beowulf,
where the readers view the main character, Beowulf, as a brave warrior who sets out to defeat the
harmful and destructive Grendel. On the other hand, John Gardner s Grendel takes a different outlook
on the epic poem where the reader sympathizes Grendel after comprehending his life, lack of self
esteem, and watches him fall the victim of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Throughout the novel, the reader is able to see Grendel s self deprecating thoughts about how [he]
fool[s] [himself] with thoughts that [he s] more noble, than pointless, ridiculous monster crouched in
the shadows (Gardner 6). Grendel has a clear lack of self esteem where he feels like a pointless,
ridiculous monster crouched in the shadows and for that reason he attacks people out of insecurity in
an attempt to make himself feel more superior. On the other hand, Grendel thoroughly covers his
insecurities to all those who cannot understand his personal thoughts because the readers of the epic
poem Beowulf have little to no sympathy for him as they seem him as a shadow stalker, stealthy, and
swift instead of a hurt, rejected, and mentally ill individual (704). Grendel achieves his goal to be
perceived as evil and powerful, but as a reader of the epic poem, Beowulf, the reader is not able to see
his insecurity and brokenness.
In the end of both the poem and the novel, the reader witnesses the battle between Grendel and
Beowulf and as a result of the different point of views displayed by the authors the readers empathize
the characters differently. During the battle in Grendel, the main character Grendel describing his
losing battle says, He smashes me against [the wall], breaks open my forehead... but not only does

Implementing An Automated Distributed Firewall
Abstract
This paper discusses about implementing an automated distributed firewall in an emulated
environment allowing researchers, educators and companies for research purposes and to experiment a
realistic distributed firewall before implementing one in real life. This eliminates the manual
configuration of each firewall which is time consuming and prone to errors and eliminate repeated
experiments.
Traditional firewalls are topology restricted and considerer everyone on the inside are trusted and one
on the outside is a least potentially an enemy. In order to overcome the difficulties for traditional

In the recent years, the threat that faces data and information has been systematically increasing, from
viruses to organized gangs that aim to stifle the operations of information systems, steal crucial
information or facilitate leakage of competitive information.
A firewall is a collection of components, interposed between two networks, that filters traffic between
them according to some security policy (Cheswick Bellovin, 1994). Due to the increase in network
attacks and awareness of cyber security firewalls are used not only in companies but also in home
networks. Firewalls are the frontline of defence to secure the networks from security risks and attacks
from cyber criminals. Firewalls filters network traffic based on filtering rules defined by the firewall
administrator or admin. Although firewalls protects from network attacks, virus etc, it depends on the
firewall policies defined, if the policies are not defined properly it proposes a security risk and limits
the effectiveness of firewall security. . There are mainly three types of firewalling techniques based on
the OSI layer in which the firewall is acting on. They are (1) packet filters, which inspect each packet
passing through them, (2) application Gateways which act on specific applications such as FTP, Telnet
etc and (3) circuit level Gateways, which apply security mechanisms whenever TCP and UDP
connections are established. Firewalls have

Tan s Use Of Bottles In The Sun
Many Americans believe that their country stresses individuality, yet people are rarely seen using
umbrellas in the sun. Though the original function of an umbrella is to keep a person dry when it rains,
they also serve as sun protection. When a person uses an umbrella on a sunny day in America, others
may stare at or question the individual. Many Americans perceive tanning as positive and the behavior
as an embarrassment. Because Americans associate a tan with social status and fear alienation, most
Americans refuse to use an umbrella in the sun. For some Americans, carrying an umbrella in the sun
is ridiculous because tans are often desirable for its indications of wealth and high social status.

Physicalist Dualism
The mind is a nonphysical thing and the body is a physical thing. The mind body problem says that
nonphysical things cannot interact casually with physical things, but states that the mind and body
interact casually. There are three theories that have different ways of explaining how the mind and
body do interact casually. Dualism is the theory that the mind and body are sperate things and they can
interact casually. This theory says that nonphysical things can interact with physical things.
Physicalism is the theory that humans can be adequately explained by physical or material
components. This theory says that the mind is a physical thing instead of nonphysical. Functionalism
is the theory that the mind is categorized by patterns of input processing output. This theory rejects the
mind body problem. It says that the mind is like a computer, there is an input of information or
experiences, the information is processed, and then you have an output of a response. Out of these
three theories, Physicalism makes the most sense. Physicalism says that the mind is a physical thing,
therefore it does not matter that nonphysical things cannot interact casually with physical things.

Michelle Obama Food Fail Essay
Michelle Obama s Food Fail Michelle Obama is pushing her way for a healthier nation, taking down
any obstacles she might encounter. The big question is; Is her plan going to backfire? This anti obesity
campaign has caused many student across the country to just stop eating school lunches. First Lady
Michelle has cut and restricted so many things in the food requirements making it next to impossible
for the schools to keep up. The requirements have been so strict that schools have to buy cheaper food
to compensate for the nutritional value. She has been leading this for several years now and has
planned on implementing even more restrictions in the future. Obesity in children is a growing
problem across America and that is a well known fact. This is because of how easy we have access to
unhealthy, greasy, fatty foods. Not always is it the children s fault that this is the food they eat, often
times the parents are either too busy or to lazy to actually cook. Again that just goes along with saying
how easy and fast it is to get ahold of this food. Yes, obesity is a problem that needs to be fixed and I
believe she has all the right intentions, she just seems to be going about it in all the wrong ways. More
than 1 Million students across the country has stopped eating school lunches because they are so
processed and fake. According to the Government Accountability Office (GAO) finding 48 out of 50

Nagaland of India contains one of the world s hottest chilies the Naga King Chili (Bhut Jolokia). The
author of the article, Mary Roach, arrived to Nagaland to experience the Hornbill Festival, in
particular, to watch the Naga King Chili Eating Competition. She aimed to find out and understand the
pleasure and pain the Capsicum genus brings to the people who consume it. The Naga King Chili

In this case, environment has a greater effect than genetics. A person s environment, exposure to
capsaicin (both frequency and hotness) has a greater effect on a person s tolerance than their biological
makeup. Also, it was mentioned in lecture, there are supertasters, tasters, and nontasters. Supertasters
have smaller and more papillae on their tongue, which makes their sensitivity to tastes heighten. For
nontasters, the opposite is true. They have bigger and less papillae on their tongues, making them less
sensitive to tastes. Supertasters would be less tolerant to chilies like the Naga King Chili because of
their heighten senses, on the other hand, nontasters would be less sensitive and would probably find
the Naga King Chili more tolerable.
Relationship with the Tomorrow s Table topic: Tomorrow s Table suggests that organic farming as
well as genetic engineering of plants can help solve some of today s food problems. At the end of the
article, it was said that growing conditions heavily affect the ways chilies turn out. The hotness of the
chilies can change drastically depending on growing conditions. Therefore, we can apply organic
farming and genetic engineering on the Naga King Peppers to make them mild. This way, the Naga
King Chilies will appeal to more consumers than just chiliheads. Similarly, the same methods can be
used on other extremely hot chilies to make them more tolerable to the average human being. By
doing so, it opens up

There were many forms of acne, ranging from blackheads, whiteheads, and pimples to severe forms
such as cystic or modular acne. Da Silva, whose scientific background was with lasers, had seen
dermatologists use laser technologies in the treatment of mild to moderate inflammatory acne, most
commonly referred to as pimples, breakouts, blemishes, or zits. Choi summarized the science behind
the laser treatments: Lasers treat acne in two possible ways. At certain wavelengths or colors lasers go
into the skin tissue and generate oxygen radicals, which kill the bacteria and reduce inflammation. At
other wavelengths, lasers are basically heat sources that reduce sebum [an oily substance produced by
certain skin glands] production by killing and reducing the number of sebaceous glands. This
decreases the likelihood that excess sebum clogs pores, which can lead to acne. 2 This document is

  • 3. Analysis Of Luria And Rubin ( 1974 ) Introduction Subject investigated: Gender stereotypes Details and aim of replicated study: Luria and Rubin (1974) Background literature: Previous studies about gender stereotypes enforced on people include; Effect of infant s perceived gender on adolescents ratings of the infant by Degelman, Dvorak, and Homutoff and Cowan (1983). These studies highlight feminine and masculine traits. They ask middle school students to rate a baby on each of those traits. Rationale: Our group decided to examine the differences in how boys and girls are described. We used a baby, whose gender is not mentioned, as the control. We knew that specific sets of expectations based on gender are enforced at a young age. We thought adjectives used to describe a baby could highlight stereotypical gender roles. Aim / Hypothesis: We believe it is more likely for the baby to be described based on appearance when told it is a girl and when told it is a boy to be described based on their potential and whether they looked smart . Our aim is to highlight the differences between males and females using stereotypical gender roles. Method Design: 15 students were each asked the same question, could you tell us 5 words or phrases that describe this baby? . 5 were told it was a girl, 5 were told it was a boy, and 5 weren t told a gender. We decided to use 15 people so that we could use the non gendered descriptions from 5 of the participants and compare them to the descriptions of boys and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

There are several ways to select the best features. cite{Thomas}. Also, it has been shown that selection of the number of the features for classification, neighbors and the predictors are very deterministic in the quality of the classification cite{NLi}. Random Forest (RF) and Support Vector Machine (SVM) are two machine learning approaches that has been successfully implemented in several studies and resulted in the significantly better results compared to KNN or other regression models. For example, in the study by Fassnacht et al.cite{Fassnacht 2014} using LiDAR and Hyperspectral data, it has been shown that RF model produce a better forest aboveground biomass prediction compared to other tested methods. RF is the ensemble classification technique based on the many random decision trees classifiers. Decision tree is the classification approach that relate the target point to the predictor based on the simple decision criteria. Decision tree can easily become unstable and result in the very complex decision boundaries, therefore Random forests are used to improve the accuracy of the prediction and also controls the over fitting cite{Thomas}. It has been shown that a large number of features can be handled by RF cite{Liai}. RF also, has been reported to have higher accuracy in predicting biomass compared to ... I see it happen all the time and it makes my heart sink because, seriously, those are missed opportunities that you will never get back. There are many large, and valuable, events scheduled around North America (and the world, for that matter) that are a gold mine of opportunity when it comes to learning and networking. Attending these events is one of the best ways to grow your business and develop valuable and meaningful contacts, too. I like to be prepared before arriving at these events whether they are the large, once a year type, or whether they are regular local networking opportunities. I know that, for many entrepreneurs, you just don t know what you don t know. I want to share some of my best tips for seizing the opportunity and really getting the best return on investment possible. 1. First and foremost, create a plan for the year and decide which events you will be attending and why. There are so very many choices ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Frogs And Toad Book Report This nonfiction selection is about frogs and toads, it informs the reader about the essential facts about frogs and toads as well as introducing additional information you probably don t know. Speaking about this, there were specific sections I enjoyed reading about more than others. For instance, I cherished reading about how adult frogs cared for their offspring, it demonstrated the grand amount of devotion certain animals provide for their young. Indeed, this impacted me because it portrayed now animals have emotions too, and don t just care about themselves. For example, the African bullfrog exhibits valiant actions because it attempts to ward off danger to any animal that poses a threat to its eggs and tadpoles. It goes to such extent ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Considering this, I would definitely continue reading other books on this topic because they captivate me and I don t find them dull whatsoever. Further, this book contained multitudinous information about frogs and toads, but the majority of it was simple facts and I want to read another book that is complex and has facts that most people wouldn t know. However, this book was adequate and has encouraged me to read other books about frogs. Equally, I find frogs engaging because their features are unique compared to other organisms. To illustrate, frogs have skin that they can breathe through and they don t have rib cages, making them one of the most interesting animals in the animal kingdom. Specifically, I m longing to read a book about glass frogs because their skin is see through and even scientists don t know why that is. In conclusion, there is no doubt that I would read another book about frogs because there s a grand quantity that I don t know about them and I m yearning to find out. They re such engrossing creatures that have qualities that I want to read about as well as animals are my passion and all this would guide me towards my goal of becoming a ... • 7. Psychedelic Drugs Research Paper Psychedelic Drugs Medical interest in psychedelic drugs has been renewed, but is it possible to overcome their negative stigma and association with counterculture to move forward with their potential medical promise? Psychedelic drugs are poised to be the next major mental breakthrough in health care, yet studying any type of illegal drug is often met with rejection, backlash, or tight regulations (Bushak, 2015). These drugs, if handled correctly, could potentially change the lives of millions of patients across America. Many would suggest that the risk is too high, but in which way do psychedelics present more risks than heavily addicting narcotics or alcohol? This treatment would allow thousands of individuals to manage pain levels, anxiety, and depression in a whole new manner. Legalizing psychedelic drugs for medical purposes would be beneficial to society because of their potential medicinal and therapeutic treatments that heavily outweigh the observed risks. • 8. Transition Into The New Material And Learning Experience It s unreal that the first semester is already over. As I looked back on the time spent in English 120 I have mixed feelings. It was tough work, and a lot of it but in the long run I truly believe I have such stronger writing skills. The hard work paid off and has significantly benefitted me. On the first day of class I said, I hope I can gain the knowledge to write a strong, solid, long essay. I hope a I can learn to transition into the new material and learning experience. I believe I completed these goals. I wrote my longest essay in this class and I m proud that I accomplished that. I would never know what to write before this class to make an essay so long. I wrote all the essays in this class without even worrying that I wouldn t have enough information. I find it ironic because my biggest concern was I wouldn t be able to make my essays long enough. The first two essays were tough but I began to transition into the workload that came along with the essay and it just became routine. Transition happened on it own through practicing my writing in my essays. • 19. Chinese History And The Chinese Tradition Chinese history has witnessed the governing styles of many different dynasties throughout its history. Both the Tang and Yuan dynasties had expansionist ideologies, and both attempted to reallocate workload under their administrations. While the Tang government was focused on management and focused (specialization?) of tasks and services, the Yuan dynasty was less able to fully control its territory and people. The Yuan dynasty s shaky regime, when contrasted with the relative stability of the Tang, highlights their differences in focus and implementation of legislation. The Tang views on how to govern their large empire were steeped in Chinese tradition. They believed that the country was so large, one man could not hope to rule it (1). Thus, they should enfeoff their relatives and therefore disseminate power across the land so that no one man is too strong (2,3). In contrast, the Mongols believed that the vast territory that they had acquired needed to be divided by stark, strict lines. Ethnic and occupational divisions were cleaved within bureaucratic and social spheres (Governing China 53). These ideological differences highlight the source of these differences between dynasties: while the Tang was based in a rich native cultural history, the Yuan was a foreign power exacting influence in an unfamiliar region. This difference would color all other parts of the dynasties governance. The extent to which the Tang stretched in its prime could only be compared to the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

A person s environment, exposure to capsaicin (both frequency and hotness) has a greater effect on a person s tolerance than their biological makeup. Also, it was mentioned in lecture, there are supertasters, tasters, and nontasters. Supertasters have smaller and more papillae on their tongue, which makes their sensitivity to tastes heighten. For nontasters, the opposite is true. They have bigger and less papillae on their tongues, making them less sensitive to tastes. Supertasters would be less tolerant to chilies like the Naga King Chili because of their heighten senses, on the other hand, nontasters would be less sensitive and would probably find the Naga King Chili more tolerable. Relationship with the Tomorrow s Table topic: Tomorrow s Table suggests that organic farming as well as genetic engineering of plants can help solve some of today s food problems. At the end of the article, it was said that growing conditions heavily affect the ways chilies turn out. The hotness of the chilies can change drastically depending on growing conditions. Therefore, we can apply organic farming and genetic engineering on the Naga King Peppers to make them mild. This way, the Naga King Chilies will appeal to more consumers than just chiliheads. Choi summarized the science behind the laser treatments: Lasers treat acne in two possible ways. At certain wavelengths or colors lasers go into the skin tissue and generate oxygen radicals, which kill the bacteria and reduce inflammation. At other wavelengths, lasers are basically heat sources that reduce sebum [an oily substance produced by certain skin glands] production by killing and reducing the number of sebaceous glands.
