Animal Testing On Animals
A rabbit lives its life trapped in a laboratory. It doesn t get fresh air and has different products tested
on it every day. The product can make the rabbit go blind or cause its skin to burn, but there is nothing
the rabbit can do about it. This is what happens to animals every day from cosmetic companies who
test their products on animals. According to Cruelty Free Kitty (2017), over 30 cosmetic companies
continue to use animal testing to improve their products. According to the U.S. Food and Drug
Administration (2017), the agency has consistently advised cosmetic manufactures to employ
whatever testing is appropriate and effective for substantiating the safety of their products. This means
that if the company believes animal testing is the best option for their product they are allowed to do
it. Testing cosmetics on animals is cruel and inhumane, and people should avoid using products that
test on animals.
There are many different tests that are performed on animals. According to The Humane Society of
The United States (n.d), it is estimated that 500,000 mice, guinea pigs, rats, and rabbits suffer and die
in these tests every year throughout the world. 500,000 innocent animals are used to improve cosmetic
company s products. One example of a test performed on animals are skin irritation/corrosion.
According to the Humane Society of The United States (n.d.), The test substance is applied to the
shaved skin of a rabbit. Their skin may show signs of redness, rash,

The National Incident Management System
Ever since the September 11, 2001 attacks on the World Trade Centers and the Pentagon, the
government took time in order to do an After Actions Review (AAR) on what occurred, what caused
it, what actions were taken, and what can be done in order to correct the mistakes that took place? One
of the issues that occurred was all of the agencies and private sectors failure to have a plan/template to
use in case of a crisis occurring. After the Gilmore Commission put out their report on the lessons
learned from September 11, 2001, in 2003, the government created the National Incident Management
System to facilitate this issue (Walsh, 2012, p.3 4). The National Incident Management System is a
systematic approach to a national template when dealing with incident management. This is how
incidents are managed across all agencies to ensure protection, response time, mitigation of duties, and
recovery (Walsh, 2012, p.4). In order to use the National Incident management System effectively, you
must use the five major components. These components are used throughout government
organizations, non government organizations, and private sectors. The five major components consist
of: (1) preparedness; (2) communications and information management; (3) command and
management; (4) ongoing management and maintenance; and (5) resource management (Walsh, 2012,
p. 6). The first component is preparedness, which requires that the incident commander (IC) assess the
situation, plan out the strategy,

A Link Between Cervical Cancer And Hpv
Introduction Did you know there is more of a link between cervical cancer and HPV than smoking and
lung cancer? Cervical cancer is currently the fourth most common cancer in women and the second
leading cause of death from cancer in women. Along with those statistics, human papillomavirus is the
most common sexually transmitted viral disease amongst men and women worldwide. The prevalence
of women having a strain of HPV that ultimately leads to or increases the chance of cervical cancer is
highly relatable. What is pathophysiology, signs, symptoms, prevention, and treatments of this
ailment? You might ask will be covered in the next few pages of this paper.

Human papilloma virus will cause almost all cases of cervical cancer, and therefore is the highest risk
factor. There are many factors that will determine if HPV will lead to cervical cancer, HPV directly
affects and transforms either or both the deepest layer of the mucous epithelial cells and more
superficial layers. Targeting the receptors found in the layers of the stratified squamous epithelium.
This is where the virus will proliferate into more differentiated cells to spawn offspring virus. The
virus replication is what causes the skin characteristics of a wart. With the help of a pap smear, we are
able to investigate if cervical epithelial cells are healthy and normal or determine which point in
dysplasia they are at in transforming to cancerous cells. The HPV virus does not need a host to
survive, and can survive in low and high temperatures. The different stages of the squamous
intraepithelial lesion can include low grade, high grade risk types of HPV, at this point HPV can
spontaneously go away on its own and shows no signs of concern to the patient. If a biopsy is done
and is showing dysplasia the physician can then rate the Cervical intraepithelial neoplasm is common

Multiracial Families In Canada And Their Struggle Living...
Multiracial Families In Canada And Their Struggle Living In A Radicalized Society The work of
Bonnett (1993) reports that the investigation of the new and middle class radical represents a critique
of the orthodox Marxist assumption that the natural and/or only home of real political dissent is the
working class. (p. 283) Bonnett states that the new radicals have tendency to be uninvolved in the day
to day running of capitalist business. (1993) The new radical middle class is stated in the work of
Cotgrove and Duff (1980:344 cited in Bonnett, 1993 to be such that constitute non industrial enclaves
within industrial society and are the carriers of alternative non economic values, and they specify this
non industrial enclave as schools, hospitals and welfare agencies. (Bonnett, 1993, p. 284) The new
radicals are reported to be identified as highly educated, economically thwarted individuals who, both
new class and radical middle class theorists agree, tend to be the most active in the public and creative
professions. (Bonnett, 1993, p. 284) According to Bonnett it has been shown that the new radicals are
more educated than other sections of the new/middle class however, the explanations provided for this
correlation are such that refer back to the inherently liberating and critical capacities ascribed to
education. (1993) The correlations that are assumed to be in existence between radicalism and
economic status and radicalism and relative autonomy from

Xenotransplantation
Xenotransplantation Imagine that your closest relative is in need of an organ transplant. Would you be
willing to give up one of your organs to save their life? Or would you make them wait for an organ
donor? A new biotechnology called Xenotransplantation is currently being used to solve this dilemma
in order to save the lives of countless people around the world. Firstly, what is Xenotransplantation?
Xenotransplantation is defined as the transfer of living cells, organs and tissues from one species to
another. Today, we are growing genetically engineered pigs to provide organs to humans who need
them. The diagram to the right shows the process of the organ transplant. Xenotransplantation offers
many advantages.

Noninvasive Vital Signal Detector Essay
The purpose of the noninvasive vital signal detector is to detect the heart and respiration rate while
displaying the information through wireless technology in your home environment. Compared to the
conventional monitoring instruments such as electrocardiograms (ECGs) and apex cardiograms
(ACGs), this device must be more affordable and portable while it still maintains a certain degree of
accuracy as compared to the ECGs and ACGs. Electrocardiography is a noninvasive recording of the
electrical impulses that originates from the sinoatrial node of the heart that is detected by electrodes
placed near the heart. Unlike the conventional ECGs, the vital sign detector will utilize the electric

CONSTRAINTS This device must be noninvasive. This device must be affordable to average
consumers (~$40). To maximize comfort this device will be made to transmit data wirelessly. To
decrease burden on the user, the device must be lightweight and compact. This device must not
potentially harm the user even if damaged or mistreated. The power supplied to the device must be
autonomously powered. The device must be comfortable. The device must have an intuitive user
interface. The current design will use two separate systems. The first system will compose of the vital
signal sensor and a wireless transmitter to transmit the data. The second system will consist of a
receiver with a signal processing program that will analyze the data transmitted from the first device
and output the data to the user. To obtain the most accurate reading, the device must be placed directly
over the heart where the heart pulse and respiration expansion will be the greatest. There are many
different ways to secure this device to the body. It has been decided the best way to secure the device
onto the body is to secure the device onto nylon which will be wrapped around the person s chest and
strapped on the back. The nylon will fit itself onto the person s body to obtain an accurate reading
with minimum outside interference even when the user is active. The components of the device must

The resulting Maastricht Treaty was a series of agreements designed to bring political, economic, and
social unity to Europe by 1993, and a common foreign and defence policy as well as a single currency
by the end of the decade (Frankel 2002). It created the European Union and led to the creation of the
euro.

The European Union introduced this new currency on January 1, 1999, christening it the euro (ā‚¬). The
actual euro currency and coins began circulation in 2002. For the interim period, transactions were
carried out in either euros or the former national currencies of the member states. (Mcgrady 2009)

Patrick Gillespie s Let Poetry Die
Patrick Gillespie, in his article Let Poetry Die, argues that poetry is dying, and we should let it. He
explains that the public lost interest in poetry because modern poets refused to accept their criticism.
This caused the quality of poetry to decrease. Gillespie believes that the solution to this problem is to
[l]et [p]oetry [d]ie [s]o that it can be reborn (Gillespie 4). Gillespie s first claim in his article is that
poetry is being forgotten by the public.
He claims that as far as the public is concerned, poetry died with the modernists, for only a few
passing pedestrians could name a poet from the last 50 to 60 years (Gillespie 1). He then states that if
you [a]sk anyone to name a novelist of the last half century, ... names will come tumbling, but if you
[a]sk anyone to name a contemporary poet, ... you will be lucky to scrape by with John Ashbery
(Gillespie 1). Even though John Ashbery is considered one of the greatest poets of the 20th century, he
is unknown to most people. Gillespie believes that the public is forgetting poetry. ... Show more

He states that the Poetry Foundation was headed toward irrelevance, at best, and oblivion at worst, but
a large donation by Ruth Lilly helped the foundation and is the only reason it is what it is today
(Gillespie 2). Because Gillespie believes that poetry is being ignored by the public, he thinks that the
Poetry Foundation should not have been saved by Lilly s donation. He then continues to criticize Lilly
s contribution, claiming that it thwarted [t]he survival of the fittest, for the Poetry Foundation is
surviving and flourishing because of Lilly s wealth, not because of any intrinsic or hard earned merit
(Gillespie 2). Gillespie believes that the Poetry Foundation does not deserve to survive, for it exists
because of Lilly s donation, not because the public wants it to

White collar crime has been around for ages. Today more and more news stories can be found where
the elite, the top executives of fortune 500 companies, are being prosecuted for participating in illegal
activities. It was hoped that the passing of the Sarbanes Oxley Act of 2001 after the Enron debacle
would reduce the amount of illegal acts being committed in corporate America. The Sarbanes Oxley
act makes executives personally responsible for their activities requiring top management to sign off
on financial statements stating they are true and accurate and these executives can face jail time for
committing fraudulent acts. Unfortunately, immorality in business is still running rampant. One illegal

Price fixing schemes are often negotiated in secret and can be very difficult to uncover, but an
agreement can be discovered from circumstantial evidence (Sonnefeld). An example, if a group of
direct competitors have regular contact with an unexplained identical contract terms or price behavior
together with other factors; such as no reason to have a meeting for legitimate business, unlawful price
fixing may be the reason. (McDavid)
The Sherman Antitrust Act of 1980 was the first measure passed by the United States Congress to
prohibit trusts. Included in the act were terms such as restraint of trade, concerted action, market
allocations, boycotts, monopolies, tying arrangements, and price fixing. (McDavid)
The Sherman Antitrust Act states that agreements to obstruct price competition by raising, depressing,
fixing, or stabilizing prices is the most serious example of a per se violation under the Sherman Act.
(Price Fixing)Under this act, it is not relevant as to whether the fixed prices are set at a maximum
price, a minimum price, the actual cost, or the fair market price. It is also immaterial under the law
whether the fixed price is reasonable. (McDavid)

Muddy Waters Research Paper
In this essay I will be discussing about Muddy Waters and the Chicago blues. Muddy Waters, also
known as McKinley Morganfield which was in fact his actual birth name, was born on April the fourth
1915 and sadly passed away April the thirtieth, 1983. Muddy Waters, was greatly known as an
American blues musician and guitarist. The Chicago blues is a form of blues music in Chicago, I will
be discussing more in detail about the Chicago blues within my essay.
Muddy, grew up in Rolling Fork, Mississippi. He was given the name Muddy Waters, because when
he was a child he would always play in the muddy swamps of the rivers in Mississippi. His Father,
Ollie Morganfield worked as a farmer and was also a blues guitar player, however he was separated
from the family after Waters was born. His Mother, Bertha Jones died in 1918 and therefore Muddy
was raised by his grandmother Delia Jones in Clarksdale. Waters first worked as a sharecropper at a
cotton plantation, however he had always found time to entertain people with his music. Waters was
always musically talented. He learned how to play the harmonica when he was just five and as a
teenager he led a band that played at Mississippi Delta clubs. His singing was influenced by the style
of Son House and at 17, Waters self taught himself to play the guitar. ... Show more content on

The Legal And Political Systems
Introduction It is noteworthy that the legal and political systems are fundamentally different in the first
place due to the diverse perspectives of the world, and they have developed into two separate entities
with their own purposes and model in the society. Therefore, it is unlikely that they share common
philosophy and practices. However, like most other disciplines in the society, sometimes law and
politics overlap to achieve a common goal, sometimes they complement each other and at other times,
they contradict each other. For example, the differentiation of adversaries has no ground in the law and
politics dominates over the rule of law when this occurs. Therefore, the goals, philosophy and
practices in both systems do not entirely agree, hence reasoning in both systems must be different
also. Tradition view The conventional view can be described as that political reasoning features
consideration to political parties, social movements, public media, the legislature and the government,
and politicians create their own normative ideology that defines and guides the behaviour of the
society. James defines legal reasoning as an approach employed by legal officials to identify and apply
legal rules to circumstances in order to solve legal cases, and that there are unique characteristics of
legal reasoning which set it apart to other forms of reasoning, such characteristics include laws and
precedents. The key in legal reasoning, according to Sunstein, is that legal

Adult Attachment Styles By Mary Ainsworth
Adult Attachment Styles The attachment style that an individual exhibits as an infant can affect their
adult romantic relationships. An attachment pattern is established in early childhood attachments and
continues to function as a working model for relationships in adulthood. This model of attachment
influences how each of us reacts to our needs and how we go about getting them met. The ability to
recognize one s attachment can help someone to understand their strengths and vulnerabilities in a
relationship. Psychologist, Mary Ainsworth, provided the most famous body of research offering
explanations of individual differences in attachment. She devised as assessment technique called the

As an adult people with dismissive avoidant attachment have the tendency to emotionally distance
themselves from their partner. They deny the importance of loved ones and detach easily from them.
They can shut down emotionally and are able to turn off their feelings. Preoccupied / Ambivalent
Attachment occurs because parents are inconsistently available to the child. This can result in a high
degree of attachment seeking behavior, mixed with angry feelings. As an adult, people tend to become
clingy and demanding toward their partner. Instead of feeling real love or trust toward their partner
they look to their partner for a sense of safety and security by clinging to their partner. They often feel
unsure of their partner s feelings and unsafe in their relationship. Unresolved / Disorganized
Attachment the child has an unusually high level of fear and might be disoriented, which can be
caused by a traumatic event such as a parent s death or abuse. A person with a fearful disorganized
attachment lives in an ambivalent state of being afraid of being both too close to or too distant from
others. They tend to be mixed up or unpredictable in their moods and experience emotional storms.

main purpose of this paper is to provide a comprehensive review of research on the fundamental
cause(s) of developmental dyslexia. The secondary purpose is to present the evidence that reveals
differences between early reading difficulties caused mainly by cognitive/biological deficits and those
caused primarily by instructional deficits. The authors first propose a model that captures all the
relevant knowledge and cognitive skills required for individuals in learning to read (figure 1). This
model certainly indicates that reading is mainly a linguistic ability rather than once popular notion that
it is primarily a visual skill. The model that underscores all reading components are thus used to
analyze manifest causes of reading difficulties. The evidence suggests that basic deficits in alphabetic
coding would lead to inadequate word identification and which then contributes to reading difficulties.
Moreover, both phonological awareness and orthographic awareness have an impact on skills of
alphabetic coding. Importantly, casual relationships between word identification difficulties and
deficient phonological skills seem more prominent in learning to read in opaque orthographies such as
English than in learning to read in more transparent orthographies such as German. It

A Career In Special Education
Special education teachers remain in high demand. Although there are numerous special education
teaching jobs, there aren t enough individuals in the field to fill these positions. Children suffering
from mental or physical disabilities often need special learning method and require more time and
energy from their instructors. Currently, approximately ten percent of individuals working in this field
lack the necessary credentials, and states are authorizing temporary licenses. Teachers with a
temporary license are then given a predetermined period of time to complete their license. As the need
for teachers in this field is expected to grow by approximately 35 percent over the coming decade,
those wishing to become a special education teacher will find they have numerous job opportunities.
Growth In Special Education

the field. An estimated 13 ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
At this time, universities train approximately 22,000 teachers to work in special education teaching
jobs every year. This is only 50 percent of the number needed to fill these positions. Further
exacerbating the problem is the departure rate of educators currently working in the field. Studies
show that a special education teacher is significantly more likely to leave his or her profession than
mainstream educators. This is due in part to a lack of support on the part of school administrators,
mounting paperwork, minimal resources and more.

Prostitution Of El Paso Research Paper
Prostitution in El Paso Research Paper As the arrival of the railroad in 1881 made its final stop in El
Paso, Texas, the population of the city boomed with people from different places and with different
intentions. A particular group of women came to the city to jumpstart a prostitution business to service
the needs of the men that came with the arrival of the railroad and in return, the women would get
money. Although Prostitution being the oldest profession, Madams Etta Clark and Alice Abbott had an
impact on the profession, specifically as it proteins to the City of El Paso. The fierce business instinct
that they both possessed, made them fierce, be loved, and respected at the same time. Prostitution is
the practice or occupation of engaging in sexual activity with someone for some sort of payment. In
depth, there are four types in which adultery can fall under. For example, the most recognized one
being street prostitution which involves in sexual activity in exchange for money but it being out on
the streets. The arrest for this illegal action tend to happen most in isolated areas. For example, the
Tenderloin District which included East Overland, Oregon, Third and Utah Streets. Escort or call out
prostitution is a sex worker who does not necessarily go out in public to display she/his line of work.
Brothels are places where men go and pay for call out prostitutes. Lastly, the prostitution of children
which was brought into alertness by Operation Stormy Nights,

The Collapse of the Tacoma Narrows Bridge Essay
The Collapse of the Tacoma Narrows Bridge
The Tacoma Narrows Bridge is perhaps the most notorious failure in the world of engineering. It
collapsed on November 7, 1940 just months after its opening on July 1, 1940. It was designed by Leon
Moisseiff and at its time it was the third largest suspension bridge in the world with a center span of
over half a mile long. The bridge was very narrow and sleek giving it a look of grace, but this design
made it very flexible in the wind. Nicknamed the Galloping Gertie, because of its undulating behavior,
the Tacoma Narrows Bridge drew the attention of motorists seeking a cheap thrill. Drivers felt that
they were driving on a roller coaster, as they would disappear from sight in the trough of ... Show

It is shaped in a way to transfer weight to the towers and anchors with its tension (O Connor, 1971, p.
372). Cables are made of high strength wires spirally bound to form a rope (O Connor, 1971, p. 372).
Vertical cable suspenders that are fastened to the main cables hang the actual roadway. Stiffening
girders and trusses are along the side of the bridge to distribute concentrated loads and help to keep
the motion of the bridge at a minimum (Troitsky, 1994, p115).
The basic design of the Tacoma Narrows Bridge itself was a suspension bridge with a center span of
2800 feet and two side spans of one 1100 feet (Farquharson, 1950, p. 17). Its two lane, reinforced
concrete roadway was twenty six feet wide with two 5 foot, 9 inch sidewalks (Farquharson, 1950, p.
19). Overall the superstructure was 5939 feet, including the suspension structures, approach spans and
anchorages (Farquharson, 1950, p. 19). Anchorages were made of solid concrete and were fifty feet by
170 feet and were fifty feet high (Farquharson, 1950, p. 19). The main towers which the cables saddle
were 425 feet in height and with a spacing of thirty nine feet at the top and fifty feet at the bottom
(Farquharson, 1950, p. 19). Each cable consisted of nineteen strands of galvanized wire and totaled a
diameter of seventeen inches. The design of the bridge may sound rather large and structurally stable
but as mentioned before the bridge was designed to be very sleek looking. By

Aaron Burr s Disgrace in the Burr Conspiracy Essay
Aaron Burr had been Vice President during the ļ¬rst administration of Thomas Jefferson. In the
summer of 1804, Burr killed his rival Alexander Hamilton in a duel, an event that effectively ended
Burr s career in national politics. Three years later, he was on trial, charged with the capital crime of
treason by the government headed by Jefferson, his former partner in political ofļ¬ce. Presiding over
the trial was John Marshall, Chief Justice of the United States. Finally, there was James Wilkinson,
general of the army, once Burr s associate and at trial his chief accuser. With these principal players,
the trial in the U.S. Circuit Court at Richmond was as much high political and personal drama as it

He continued to sound out potential backers for his military expedition. In western Pennsylvania,
hoping to enlist the support of influential Colonel Morgan and his two sons, Burr made the fatal
mistake of expressing plans which his host found shocking. Morgan wrote a letter to President
Jefferson summarizing his conversation with Burr, setting in motion the effort that would eventually
put an end to Burr s dreams and lead to his arrest and trial. (Linder, 2001)
In November a militia detachment caught up with Burr on the west bank of the Mississippi. Burr was
handed a letter from the Governor of Mississippi demanding his surrender. He responded to the letter
by denouncing Wilkinson whose perfidious conduct had completely frustrated his projects. The next
day Burr met with the Governor who convinced him to surrender. A grand jury in Washington
declared Burr not guilty of any crime or misdemeanor against the United States. The jury went on to
condemn the arrest, suggesting that it had given cause to the enemies of our glorious Constitution to
rejoice. (Landen, 2001) Once additional information about Burr s activities became known, a new
warrant was issued for his arrest in mid February. Burr was taken to Fort Stoddart for two weeks and
then sent by a nine man military guard on a one thousand mile horseback trip to Richmond, where he
would stand trial for treason.

The Principles of the Yin and Yang Essay
The Principles of the Yin and Yang
The principle of the yin and yang is embedded in all facets of my life. But its operations have taken
the subtlest of forms, unfolding through a kind of shy conspiracy, an inner dynamism in the nature of
things. Such qualities are inherent in the way Chinese traditions view things, as the web that has no
weaver, an intricate and interlaced patterns of relationships of all that there is without a known creator
and creation day. It is far different from a historical timeline or a linear logic. It surmises that
everything is related to everything else and lays heavy emphasis on what is now that must be

When we are conscious, we are awake and aware of internal and external stimuli, thus we are actively

Sleep has very yin underpinnings, holding that sleep restores, replenishes and rebuild our brains and
bodies that are somehow worn out by day s working activities.
As I step into the world outside my room, I see a bigger picture with more yin and yang relationships.
The social structure is made up of opposing links and overlying relationships. In our patriarchal
society, men (yang) are expected to be the more dominant and influential in decision making vis Ć  vis
women (yin) who are expected to be submissive and docile. Social constructs such as genders have
attached yang characteristics to men and yin characteristics to women creating a gender tension
between. Understandably, in ancient China women are expected to be hidden in their homes, passive
and contracting to give way for a man s active and expansive rule as culturally dictated upon them.
But in reality, men (yang) and women (yin) carries a certain degree of femininity (yin) and
masculinity (yang) respectively. A woman can be assertive and overpowering and a man can be
nurturing and gentle depending on the situation. In

Essay about Analysis of Beethoven Symphony 3 and Mozart...
Beethoven Symphony No. 3 and Mozart Symphony 40 Forms
Sonata form is one of the more popular forms of music that is found in a variety of different works
including symphonies, concertos, and sonatas. Sonata form features three distinct sections: the
exposition, development, and recapitulation. Mozart was one of the early composers of this form of
music. I will examine the clear distinctions between each section and how he does not stray from the
typical form. In later years the form would change to become more fluent and focused on the growth
and expansion of the piece. This progression of change was led by the works of Beethoven and the
changes can be clearly seen in his grandiose works. By comparing the first movement of Symphony ...

The recapitulation is much like the exposition, except it does not modulate. All of these sections can
be seen in the Mozart and Beethoven movements that are being analyzed and relatively easy to
identify. In the Mozart symphony, sections defined by strong cadences. An easy example would be at
the end of the exposition where there is a PAC in ms. 99. Following that is a rest and then an
appearance of F sharp minor. This is the beginning of the development. The end of the development
ends with a huge forte with a pedal tone and a cadence at ms. 160. The wind section quietly brings the
section to a close as the strings reintroduce the primary theme back in the original key of G minor.
These large sections are not likely to be mistaken. Beethoven too has clearly defined the large sections
of the sonata form. His exposition begins after two opening chords with the theme in the cello section.
The exposition closes with full orchestral chords in a perfect authentic cadence around ms. 144 148
and after a short link/transition the development begins at ms. 166. The development closes with huge
orchestral chords. The big pictures for Mozart and Beethoven line up, but a closer and deeper look
reveal that the small sections are quite different. Mozart s smaller sections continue to remain clearly
defined, but Beethoven tends to blur it all together. In a typical exposition, we expect to find

Descartes Discourse On Method Summary
The mythical phoenix is born in the ashes of its mother once she has been consumed in flame,
becoming stronger than she ever was. In Discourse on Method, Descartes hopes to destroy the
conventional understanding of philosophy that has been followed throughout the ages, and in doing so
establish his own philosophy as the new convention in the ashes of the old philosophy. In this paper, I
will present Descartes findings of instability in philosophy and distaste for the way people learn as his
motivation for undertaking this reconstruction of his thoughts, finding a firm and lasting basis for the
sciences as his end goal for the reconstruction, and his rules for conducting thought and code of doubt
as the way by which he hopes to achieve ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Descartes takes this idea and applies it to book learning, and he concludes that book learning is
composed and enlarged little by little from the opinions of many different persons. However, he
believes that book learning does not draw nearly as close to the truth as the simple reasonings that a
man of good sense can naturally make about the things he encounters. Descartes believes that one
should trust in their reason rather than in their knowledge which has been collected from the opinions
of others. Secondly, Descartes, by embarking on this reconstruction of his thoughts, hopes to find a
stable basis for the sciences. Since Descartes was trained as a mathematician, he likes to find proofs
for ideas, so that he can know them with absolute certainty. Initially, he believes philosophy to be the
basis for the sciences insofar as they [the sciences] borrow their principles from philosophy. However,
he concludes that philosophy cannot be the basis for the sciences, saying, one could not have built
anything upon such unstable foundations. Now, he has to find a stronger foundation for the sciences
and it is only through the reconstruction of his thought that he is able to do this. Lastly, Descartes uses
two methods to carry out the reconstruction of his thoughts. The first method is his four rules for
conducting thought, which will characterize the way that he will look at the world during this period
of reconstruction. The first rule is

Simply Complexed Women From the beginning women were thought of as being inferior to men,
especially when it comes to literature. However, William Faulkner was of the belief that women were
the foundation of the family, but also depicted women being as a lesser, more gullible, and small
minded person to the fellow man. Faulkner s stories focus on the main themes and timeless moral
issues of the time such as sexism, social class, and racism. A Rose for Emily focuses on sexism and
some class issues, showing comparisons between men and women. Women of the 19th century were

Photochemical Smog
Photochemical Smog
Gifted Chemistry IB
Alternative Assessment
1997 March 19
Historically, the term smog referred to a mixture of smoke and fog, hence the name smog. The
industrial revolution has been the central cause for the increase in pollutants in the atmosphere over
the last three centuries. Before 1950, the majority of this pollution was created from the burning of
coal for energy generation, space heating, cooking, and transportation. Under the right conditions, the
smoke and sulfur dioxide produced from the burning of coal can combine with fog to create industrial
smog. In high concentrations, industrial smog can be extremely toxic to humans and other living
organisms. London is world famous for its episodes of industrial smog. ... Show more content on

These conditions include :
ā€¢ Precipitation can alleviate photochemical smog as the pollutants are washed out of the atmosphere
with the rainfall. ā€¢ Winds can blow photochemical smog away replacing it with fresh air. However,
problems may arise in distant areas that receive the pollution. ā€¢ Temperature inversions can enhance
the severity of a photochemical smog episode. Normally, during the day the air near the surface is
heated and as it warms it rises, carrying the pollutants with it to higher elevations. However, if a
temperature inversion develops pollutants can be trapped near the Earth s surface. Temperature
inversions cause the reduction of atmospheric mixing and therefore reduce the vertical dispersion of
pollutants. Inversions can last from a few days to several weeks.
4. Topography is another important factor influencing how severe a smog event can become.
Communities situated in valleys are more susceptible to photochemical smog because hills and
mountains surrounding them tend to reduce the air flow, allowing for pollutant concentrations to rise.
In addition, valleys are sensitive to photochemical smog because relatively strong temperature
inversions can frequently develop in these areas. Possible Solutions
A possible solution to the problem of photochemical smog is to enforce stricter emission laws all over
the globe. Many countries have varying laws on the legal limits of NOx, Carbon Dioxide, and Sulfur
Dioxide.

Wildwood Lake Canoe Company Casse Study Essay
Wildwood Lake Canoe Company
In January 2010, Allan Monroe was preparing for the April opening of the Wildwood Lake Canoe
Company (WLC), a canoe manufacturing shop in St. Mary s, Ontario. Monroe planned to build 30
canoes per year and he wondered what strategy and tactics would maximize his profits.
The initiative for WLC evolved from Monroe s canoeing and woodworking hobbies. Monroe had
canoed recreationally for more than 20 years and had built three canoes, which he sold after using
them each for a season. Last spring, when Monroe decided to purchase a canoe for the first time, he

Monroe planned to produce 30 canoes in the first year and average one canoe every ten days, which
would leave 65 days to buffer any unforeseen production delays[1]. Monroe would have to work
seven days a week to maintain the production pace; however, he felt that he could handle a seven day
schedule for two to three years. Although the first canoes were scheduled to take almost 12 days to
build, manufacturing time would gradually decrease. Monroe knew that he would have to invest in
some equipment which would include an estimated $5,530 for power equipment and accessories; hand
tools at $835; cutters, blades and bits at $800; benches, stands and cabinets for $1,600; forms and jigs
for $160; and office equipment for $3,055. Monroe projected that variable costs would total $1,161
per canoe[2] and annual operating expenses would total $8,644[3].
The market for canoes followed the business cycle. In recessions, canoe sales suffered as many
prospective customers stopped recreational spending. Sales of premium priced canoes were especially
vulnerable. The statistics showed that many companies were unable to survive the recent recession
that began in 2008; however, industry sales had been strong and improving over the past year or so.
Monroe was optimistic that growth would continue in the immediate future.
Promotion would consist of a website, advertisements in canoeing magazines and

Mass Incarceration In The Age Of Colorblindness By...
Michelle Alexander s book, The New Jim Crow: Mass Incarceration in the Age of Colorblindness,
examines mass incarceration in the United States, why the criminal justice system works the way it
does towards minorities, the detriments associated with mass incarceration as it relates to offenders,
and much more. In the introduction of her book, Alexander immediately paints the harsh reality of
mass incarceration with the story of Jarvious Cotton who is denied the right to vote among other rights
because he, has been labeled as a felon and is currently on parole (1). Other information Alexander
presents in her introduction are her qualifications as an author of the book, and gives a brief summary
of each chapter and how each one is laid out. Her qualifications are she is African American civil
rights attorney with the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) and is also an Associate Professor at
the University of Stanford Law School. From a critical standpoint, Alexander seems very qualified to
write on the topic, being part of the marginalized group and also being an expert in the legal field of
which the topic covers, enhances her ethos to where one could consider her an expert in mass
incarceration topics, as they relate to African Americans. Overall, the introduction of her book does a

After a time, the existence of subnormal profits would cause firms to leave the industry. Supply would
fall and prices rise. Hence long run equilibrium is one of normal profits only.
Perfect Competition Long Run
[pic]
Advantages of perfect competition
Because firms produce where MC=MR=Price, allocative efficiency is achieved.
Productive efficiency is also achieved because the firm produces at the lowest point of the AC curve.
Prices are lower because of increased competition.
Because of perfect knowledge firms must keep up to date and innovate or they will be forced to leave
the industry.
In the long run all firms will earn normal profits.
Cartels and other restrictive agreements cannot emerge to exploit consumers.
Perfect competition can be used as a model in economic analysis.
Disadvantages of perfect competition
Firms have little time to benefit from inventions because they quickly enter the public domain.
Since firms make only normal profits they might not have the funds to undertake expensive research
that often yields the most outstanding discoveries.
Firms might not benefit from economies of large scale production.
In order to prevent abuse of the consumer, some industries are best run by the state as natural
monopolies and so perfect competition would be inappropriate.
Perfect competition is a goal that cannot be reached in the real world.

management team, their strategy to invest in their employees as their catalyst in being successful.
In 1985, Tesco announced the operations of its 100th superstore and in the following year it
announced its plan to invest Ā£500 million in starting 29 more stores (Corporate Watch, 2004). The
beginning of the next decade saw Tesco basking on the success of its petrol filling stations to become
UK s largest private petrol retailer (Corporate Watch, 2004). The company introduced the idea of
developing new and different store concepts and better customer centric initiatives. In 1995 Tesco
introduced a revolution in the food retailing market, the Tesco club (loyalty) card, which provided
offers and other benefits to customers and also helping the company learn more about its customer s
shopping patterns and needs (Cheffey Smith, 2010). Other customer centric services included: Tesco
Direct in 2006 (Cheffey Smith, 2010) which aimed at encouraging catalogue shopping and to rival
Argos, the Baby club for new parents, and the

Extremely Loud And Incredibly Close Book Report
Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close, as written by Jonathan Safran Foer, offers a truly unique insight
into the life of too smart for his own good, nine year old Oskar Schell. The book mainly follows Oskar
in his search for closure in the aftermath of the death of his father, Thomas Schell, who died tragically
in the 9/11 terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center. Months after his father s death, Oskar finds a
key in an envelope seemingly hidden away in a vase in his father s closet. Oskar wonders if this could
be another of his father s famous scavenger hunts; the scavenger hunt to end all scavenger hunts. The
envelope has the word Black scrawled on it in red pen, Oskar decides Black must be the name o
someone who knew his father. In order to discover what exactly the key unlocks, I decided I would
meet every person in New York with the last name ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
His story is told chronically; one of the many aspects of this book which contributes to the reader s
sensation of experiencing that which Oskar experiences, first hand. The disorientation Oskar feels as
he searches for something or someone to fill the hole the death of his father created is mirrored in the
style of Foer s writing. Foer masterfully crafts the depiction of events in such a way that the reader
rarely has a better understanding of said events than the character in question, contributing greatly to
the reader s sense of confusion and frustration. As readers, we are used to the privileges the average
reader can expect to receive, one most unknowingly take advantage of, that of the all knowing
outsider looking in. Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close is not the typical novel; there are no long
winded introductions. There are no detailed descriptions of events which alleviate the stress of NOT
knowing. No, instead the book follows the scattered thoughts of the narrator, and therefore the reader
only knows that which the narrator chances to

Taylor Mountain Regional Park Topographic Analysis
Topographic Assessment of Taylor Mountain Regional Park The purpose of this assessment is to
understand all topographic factors concerning the past, present, and future of Taylor Mountain
Regional Park. The site is 4 acres in size and is located in Taylor Mountain Regional Park and Open
Space Preserve. The coordinates of the site, according to the USGS 1954 Santa Rosa Quadrangle
Map, are N 38 degrees 24 minutes and 30 seconds, W 122 degrees 41 minutes and 25 seconds (Figure
2). The entrance to the site is located at the 1900 section of Kawana Terrace, adjacent to the private
continuation of Kawana Terrace in Santa Rosa California 95407 in the United States. The site is
located in the NE 1/2 of the SE 1/4 of section 36, T7N, R8W on the Mount ... Show more content on

Through the northwestern portion of the site a manmade walking path has been established for
recreation purposes adjacent to the lowest point of the meadow. Despite there being a drainage culvert
for carrying rainwater under the pathway, there is noticeable erosion of the path itself, suggesting that
with ample rainfall such a culvert is insufficient, allowing rainwater to flow up and over the path
(Figure 8). This also draws into question the stability of the local area in terms of landslides and mass
wasting. Because the slope is greater than 25% it is very likely that mass wasting occurs in the area.
Slopes in the surrounding area are not steep enough for rock falls but with consistent heavy rainfall a
mudslide of clay and rock is possible, which could threaten recreational users of the park. Because
Taylor Mountain is a public open space preserve there is cause for concern when designing/building
structures associated with recreational use. Precautions must be taken when building to avoid hazards
of mass wasting and erosion. However, due to the nature of the preserve it is highly unlikely that any
type of large structure or septic system would be permitted. Noise pollution in this area is very mild
with only the occasional truck being heard on the 101 highway to the west. Unfortunately, a new fire
station is to be built within .6 miles and some local fauna may become disturbed by the wail of sirens.
Be advised that a sound barrier should be constructed around the fire station in order to minimize
disturbance of wildlife. One important note is that it was recommended in a biotic assessment that,
one of the proposed trails be removed from the plan (on Taylor Mountain) to avoid impacts to deer in
the oak woodland, and that another be realigned to avoid wetlands (Waaland, pg.1). In doing so further
disruption of wildlife habitat can be

The product can make the rabbit go blind or cause its skin to burn, but there is nothing the rabbit can do about it. This is what happens to animals every day from cosmetic companies who test their products on animals. According to Cruelty Free Kitty (2017), over 30 cosmetic companies continue to use animal testing to improve their products. According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (2017), the agency has consistently advised cosmetic manufactures to employ whatever testing is appropriate and effective for substantiating the safety of their products. This means that if the company believes animal testing is the best option for their product they are allowed to do it. Testing cosmetics on animals is cruel and inhumane, and people should avoid using products that test on animals. There are many different tests that are performed on animals. • 3. The National Incident Management System Ever since the September 11, 2001 attacks on the World Trade Centers and the Pentagon, the government took time in order to do an After Actions Review (AAR) on what occurred, what caused it, what actions were taken, and what can be done in order to correct the mistakes that took place? One of the issues that occurred was all of the agencies and private sectors failure to have a plan/template to use in case of a crisis occurring. After the Gilmore Commission put out their report on the lessons learned from September 11, 2001, in 2003, the government created the National Incident Management System to facilitate this issue (Walsh, 2012, p.3 4). The National Incident Management System is a systematic approach to a national template when dealing with incident management. This is how incidents are managed across all agencies to ensure protection, response time, mitigation of duties, and recovery (Walsh, 2012, p.4). In order to use the National Incident management System effectively, you must use the five major components. These components are used throughout government organizations, non government organizations, and private sectors. The five major components consist of: (1) preparedness; (2) communications and information management; (3) command and management; (4) ongoing management and maintenance; and (5) resource management (Walsh, 2012, p. 6). The first component is preparedness, which requires that the incident commander (IC) assess the situation, plan out the strategy, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 21. The Legal And Political Systems Introduction It is noteworthy that the legal and political systems are fundamentally different in the first place due to the diverse perspectives of the world, and they have developed into two separate entities with their own purposes and model in the society. Therefore, it is unlikely that they share common philosophy and practices. However, like most other disciplines in the society, sometimes law and politics overlap to achieve a common goal, sometimes they complement each other and at other times, they contradict each other. For example, the differentiation of adversaries has no ground in the law and politics dominates over the rule of law when this occurs. Therefore, the goals, philosophy and practices in both systems do not entirely agree, hence reasoning in both systems must be different also. Tradition view The conventional view can be described as that political reasoning features consideration to political parties, social movements, public media, the legislature and the government, and politicians create their own normative ideology that defines and guides the behaviour of the society. James defines legal reasoning as an approach employed by legal officials to identify and apply legal rules to circumstances in order to solve legal cases, and that there are unique characteristics of legal reasoning which set it apart to other forms of reasoning, such characteristics include laws and precedents. • 23. The Effect Of Reading Abilities On Dyslexia Over The Past... This journal paper presented by Vellution and his associates outlines the most important findings of research that evaluates possible causes of reading abilities in dyslexia over the past four decades. The main purpose of this paper is to provide a comprehensive review of research on the fundamental cause(s) of developmental dyslexia. The secondary purpose is to present the evidence that reveals differences between early reading difficulties caused mainly by cognitive/biological deficits and those caused primarily by instructional deficits. The authors first propose a model that captures all the relevant knowledge and cognitive skills required for individuals in learning to read (figure 1). This model certainly indicates that reading is mainly a linguistic ability rather than once popular notion that it is primarily a visual skill. The model that underscores all reading components are thus used to analyze manifest causes of reading difficulties. The evidence suggests that basic deficits in alphabetic coding would lead to inadequate word identification and which then contributes to reading difficulties. Moreover, both phonological awareness and orthographic awareness have an impact on skills of alphabetic coding. Importantly, casual relationships between word identification difficulties and deficient phonological skills seem more prominent in learning to read in opaque orthographies such as English than in learning to read in more transparent orthographies such as German. It collapsed on November 7, 1940 just months after its opening on July 1, 1940. It was designed by Leon Moisseiff and at its time it was the third largest suspension bridge in the world with a center span of over half a mile long. The bridge was very narrow and sleek giving it a look of grace, but this design made it very flexible in the wind. Its two lane, reinforced concrete roadway was twenty six feet wide with two 5 foot, 9 inch sidewalks (Farquharson, 1950, p. 19). Overall the superstructure was 5939 feet, including the suspension structures, approach spans and anchorages (Farquharson, 1950, p. 19). Anchorages were made of solid concrete and were fifty feet by 170 feet and were fifty feet high (Farquharson, 1950, p. 19). The main towers which the cables saddle were 425 feet in height and with a spacing of thirty nine feet at the top and fifty feet at the bottom (Farquharson, 1950, p. 19). In the summer of 1804, Burr killed his rival Alexander Hamilton in a duel, an event that effectively ended Burr s career in national politics. Three years later, he was on trial, charged with the capital crime of treason by the government headed by Jefferson, his former partner in political ofļ¬ce. Presiding over the trial was John Marshall, Chief Justice of the United States. Finally, there was James Wilkinson, general of the army, once Burr s associate and at trial his chief accuser. (Linder, 2001) In November a militia detachment caught up with Burr on the west bank of the Mississippi. Burr was handed a letter from the Governor of Mississippi demanding his surrender. He responded to the letter by denouncing Wilkinson whose perfidious conduct had completely frustrated his projects. The next day Burr met with the Governor who convinced him to surrender. A grand jury in Washington declared Burr not guilty of any crime or misdemeanor against the United States. The jury went on to condemn the arrest, suggesting that it had given cause to the enemies of our glorious Constitution to rejoice. (Landen, 2001) Once additional information about Burr s activities became known, a new warrant was issued for his arrest in mid February. Burr was taken to Fort Stoddart for two weeks and then sent by a nine man military guard on a one thousand mile horseback trip to Richmond, where he would stand trial for treason. Article ... I will examine the clear distinctions between each section and how he does not stray from the typical form. An easy example would be at the end of the exposition where there is a PAC in ms. 99. Following that is a rest and then an appearance of F sharp minor. This is the beginning of the development. The end of the development ends with a huge forte with a pedal tone and a cadence at ms. 160. The wind section quietly brings the section to a close as the strings reintroduce the primary theme back in the original key of G minor. These large sections are not likely to be mistaken. Beethoven too has clearly defined the large sections of the sonata form. His exposition begins after two opening chords with the theme in the cello section. The exposition closes with full orchestral chords in a perfect authentic cadence around ms. 144 148 and after a short link/transition the development begins at ms. 166. The development closes with huge orchestral chords. The big pictures for Mozart and Beethoven line up, but a closer and deeper look reveal that the small sections are quite different. In Discourse on Method, Descartes hopes to destroy the conventional understanding of philosophy that has been followed throughout the ages, and in doing so establish his own philosophy as the new convention in the ashes of the old philosophy. In this paper, I will present Descartes findings of instability in philosophy and distaste for the way people learn as his motivation for undertaking this reconstruction of his thoughts, finding a firm and lasting basis for the sciences as his end goal for the reconstruction, and his rules for conducting thought and code of doubt as the way by which he hopes to achieve ... Descartes takes this idea and applies it to book learning, and he concludes that book learning is composed and enlarged little by little from the opinions of many different persons. However, he believes that book learning does not draw nearly as close to the truth as the simple reasonings that a man of good sense can naturally make about the things he encounters. Descartes believes that one should trust in their reason rather than in their knowledge which has been collected from the opinions of others. Secondly, Descartes, by embarking on this reconstruction of his thoughts, hopes to find a stable basis for the sciences. Since Descartes was trained as a mathematician, he likes to find proofs for ideas, so that he can know them with absolute certainty. Initially, he believes philosophy to be the basis for the sciences insofar as they [the sciences] borrow their principles from philosophy. However, he concludes that philosophy cannot be the basis for the sciences, saying, one could not have built anything upon such unstable foundations. Now, he has to find a stronger foundation for the sciences and it is only through the reconstruction of his thought that he is able to do this. Lastly, Descartes uses two methods to carry out the reconstruction of his thoughts. The first method is his four rules for conducting thought, which will characterize the way that he will look at the world during this period of reconstruction. The first rule is ... The industrial revolution has been the central cause for the increase in pollutants in the atmosphere over the last three centuries. Before 1950, the majority of this pollution was created from the burning of coal for energy generation, space heating, cooking, and transportation. Under the right conditions, the smoke and sulfur dioxide produced from the burning of coal can combine with fog to create industrial smog. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... These conditions include : ā€¢ Precipitation can alleviate photochemical smog as the pollutants are washed out of the atmosphere with the rainfall. ā€¢ Winds can blow photochemical smog away replacing it with fresh air. However, problems may arise in distant areas that receive the pollution. ā€¢ Temperature inversions can enhance the severity of a photochemical smog episode. Normally, during the day the air near the surface is heated and as it warms it rises, carrying the pollutants with it to higher elevations. However, if a temperature inversion develops pollutants can be trapped near the Earth s surface. Temperature inversions cause the reduction of atmospheric mixing and therefore reduce the vertical dispersion of pollutants. Inversions can last from a few days to several weeks. 4. Topography is another important factor influencing how severe a smog event can become. Communities situated in valleys are more susceptible to photochemical smog because hills and mountains surrounding them tend to reduce the air flow, allowing for pollutant concentrations to rise. In addition, valleys are sensitive to photochemical smog because relatively strong temperature inversions can frequently develop in these areas. Possible Solutions A possible solution to the problem of photochemical smog is to enforce stricter emission laws all over the globe. Many countries have varying laws on the legal limits of NOx, Carbon Dioxide, and Sulfur Dioxide. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The site is 4 acres in size and is located in Taylor Mountain Regional Park and Open Space Preserve. The coordinates of the site, according to the USGS 1954 Santa Rosa Quadrangle Map, are N 38 degrees 24 minutes and 30 seconds, W 122 degrees 41 minutes and 25 seconds (Figure 2). The entrance to the site is located at the 1900 section of Kawana Terrace, adjacent to the private continuation of Kawana Terrace in Santa Rosa California 95407 in the United States. The site is located in the NE 1/2 of the SE 1/4 of section 36, T7N, R8W on the Mount ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Through the northwestern portion of the site a manmade walking path has been established for recreation purposes adjacent to the lowest point of the meadow. Despite there being a drainage culvert for carrying rainwater under the pathway, there is noticeable erosion of the path itself, suggesting that with ample rainfall such a culvert is insufficient, allowing rainwater to flow up and over the path (Figure 8). This also draws into question the stability of the local area in terms of landslides and mass wasting. Because the slope is greater than 25% it is very likely that mass wasting occurs in the area. Slopes in the surrounding area are not steep enough for rock falls but with consistent heavy rainfall a mudslide of clay and rock is possible, which could threaten recreational users of the park. Because Taylor Mountain is a public open space preserve there is cause for concern when designing/building structures associated with recreational use. Precautions must be taken when building to avoid hazards of mass wasting and erosion. However, due to the nature of the preserve it is highly unlikely that any type of large structure or septic system would be permitted. Noise pollution in this area is very mild with only the occasional truck being heard on the 101 highway to the west. Unfortunately, a new fire station is to be built within .6 miles and some local fauna may become disturbed by the wail of sirens. Be advised that a sound barrier should be constructed around the fire station in order to minimize disturbance of wildlife. One important note is that it was recommended in a biotic assessment that, one of the proposed trails be removed from the plan (on Taylor Mountain) to avoid impacts to deer in the oak woodland, and that another be realigned to avoid wetlands (Waaland, pg.1). In doing so further disruption of wildlife habitat can be ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
