Essay about Explanation for Criminality from a...
Explanation for Criminality from a Sociological Perspective
From a sociological perspective, explanation for criminality is found in two levels which are the
subculture and the structural explanations. The sociological explanations emphasize aspects of
societal arrangements that are external to the actor and compelling. A sociological explanation is
concerned with how the structure of a society, institutional practices or its persisting cultural themes
affect the conduct of its members. Individual differences are denied or ignored, and the explanation
of the overall collective behavior is sought in the patterning of social arrangements that is
considered to be both outside the actor and prior to him (Sampson, 1985).
That is, the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It is in this change and variety that crime is defined. An application of this principle to criminology
would find the roots of the crime in the fact that groups have developed different standards of
appropriate behavior. In those complex cultures, each individual is subject to competing
prescriptions for action.
Another subcultural explanation of crime grows readily out of the fact that as we have seen,
social classes experience different rates of arrest and conviction for serious offenses. When within
a society categories are marked off by income, education and occupational prestige. Here
differences are discovered among them in the amount an style of the crime. Further, differences are
usually found between these social classes in their interests and morals. Its easy to describe these
class linked patterns as a culture.
This version of the subcultural explanation of crime holds that the very fact of learning the lessons
of the subculture means that one acquires interests and preferences that place him in greater or
lesser risk of breaking the law. Others argue that being reared on the lower class means learning a
different culture from that which creates the criminal laws. The lower class subculture is said to
have its own values as many of which run counter to the majority interest that support the laws
against the serious predatory crimes. One needs to not that the indicators of class are not
descriptions of class.

Character Analysis Of Gene Forrester In A Separate Peace...
Gene Forrester is a character developed through his actions, dialogues, and thoughts that contribute
to his personality traits. Gene s thoughts and actions distinguish his personality from that of other
characters. Gene hides his true nature in the environment of the novel but exposes himself to the
reader through his thinking and reflection. Gene is revealed to be insecure and jealous through his
narration of the story. Firstly, Gene s insecurity and jealousy are unveiled through his actions,
thinking, and dialogue. By deciphering his reasoning behind his actions, the reader discovers
Gene s insecurity thriving beneath the surface. This is seen when Gene s close friend Phineas
jokingly admits that Gene becoming valedictorian would make him jealous and Gene reacts by
thinking, Then a second realization broke as clearly and bleakly as dawn at the beach. Finny had
deliberately set out to wreck my studies (Knowles, 53).... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
He describes this realization as clear and bleak which indicates he feels it is obvious that Finny
intends to sabotage Gene s academics. However, this is evidently uncharacteristic of Finny, and
implies Gene is misreading and unconsciously manipulating the situation to justify the fact he
does not have an A in one of his classes; he blames Finny for this. Gene s conjecture is a result of
his attempt to defend himself. Insecurity breeds defensiveness as his poor self confidence
allowed him to feel threatened by Finny s joking remarks and took his words sincerely. Due to
Gene s defensive response, it displays his weak self confidence, proving his insecurity. Another
personality trait Gene possesses is jealousy. His jealousy is exemplified in Gene s reaction when
Finny is about to get in trouble, and he responds, This time he wasn t going to get away with it. I

Advantages And Disadvantages Of Treadmills
People around the world are looking for the best treadmill brands that can be used for home.
Treadmills are devices or work out machines that make the user walk while staying at the same
place. Users can also run on these machines as fast as they want to. Treadmills are great machines
that can improve one s stamina and speed. Some people also use these machines to train animals
such as dogs and horses. The treadmillwas introduced even before the experts developed the
power machine. The idea of the power machine came from manpower operated mills that used
people and animals to make it run. These mills were operated by animals such as horse, donkeys,
and cow that grinded the grain to make flour out of it.
Now, people are using treadmills as workout machines or exercise machines that would keep them
in shape or increase their power. A treadmill has a platform that is covered with belt that spins
around when the user runs or walks on top of the machine. There are also treadmills ... Show more

Megan McArdle states During the time when people are supposed to be learning to face an
often hard world as adults, and going through the often uncomfortable process of building their
intellectual foundations, they are demanding to be sheltered from anything that might challenge
their beliefs or recall unpleasant facts to their mind. If you are removed from anything that goes
against your beliefs, then you won t be able to adapt to the really world. The real world is all
about adapting and learning with many different people that are very different from you. JW
Wilson, from the Advanced Learning Institute says in a quote Some parents and educators
believe that a child is like a huge container. To insure the child s success, they think it their job to
fill it up with as much information as possible, as quickly as possible. This misconception is
damaging the brilliance of millions of our youth. JW Wilson is saying that students need to be
sheltered and not be bombarded with a lot of information. In an article it states that People may
have to tolerate the existence of offensive speech in society as a whole, but they do not have to
accept its presence in a library funded by their tax dollars ( Library ). If people aren t expose to
questionable topics before stepping out into college or the real world it will be hard for them to
adjust to dealing with offensive speech since it is everywhere: television, the internet, and even the

Application And Web Application For Nutritionists And...
INTRODUCTION
1.1Introduction:
Android application and web application for nutritionists and dietitians is a project designed and
developed in a way that all the dietitians and nutritionists can use this application at their work as
they do it on a regular day to day basis because the design of the application is in such a way that
we have digitalized or changed their regular work flow process in to this application and this
application is not only supposed for the registered dietitians or nutritionists but can also be used by
the intern students who are taking the dietitians course.
1.2Motivation:
The main motivation for the project comes from a lack of usage of mobile technology in the field
of dietetics and nutrition. The dietitians have a hard time in calculating the energy, fluid and
protein needs for their patients, all the dietitians use a book called Pocket Resource for Nutrition
Assessment which is published by Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. Dietitians use this pocket
resource for doing all the energy, fluid and protein calculations for their patients by hand and also
dietitians need to memorize all the formulas for the corresponding calculations to do it by hand. So
after a thorough research and a few meetings with Dr. Elaine Molaison, a Registered Dietitian and
professor in Department of Nutrition and Food Systems, The University of Southern Mississippi,
and some other professors and dietitians, we came up with an idea of creating a mobile

Rhetorical Analysis Of Hillary Clinton s Speech
Hillary Clinton spoke at the U.N. Fourth World Conference on Women. This speech was delivered
on September fifth in Beijing, China. This conference promoted The Beijing Declaration and the
Platform for Action, which aimed to provide equal rights to women across the globe (World, n.
pag.). Clinton s speech promoting women s rights was successful because she established
credibility, addressed the abusive treatment of women around the world, logically responded to that
treatment, and provided an inspirational call to action. Clinton established ethos early on in her
speech which supported her testimony at the conference. She opened her speech by saying, I would

She declares, when families flourish, communities and nations do as well. That is why every
woman, every man, every child, every family, and every nation on this planet does have a stake
in the discussion that takes place here (n. pag.). She begins to conclude her speech with the
unifying structure of family. To create a family, a woman must be present, each of those family
compile to create communities, and communities create nations. She uses this to explain that
women help form the base of all nations and therefore, the equal treatment of women will reflect
prosperously on countries. This supported her argument because it appealed to the diplomats in
the audience that can make changes in their various countries around the world. She brings her
argument to a close with the following remarks, The time is now. We must move beyond
rhetoric. We must move beyond recognition of problems to working together, to have the
comment efforts to build that common ground we hope to see (n. pag.). This is successful for the
closing of her argument because it specifically calls her audience to make bigger changes than
what has previously been done. Speaking on inequality and putting laws into place that supports
equality for all results in much different changes. She calls for her audience to join forces with
others to truly make a difference in their own people s lives, as well as, those who live in other

Disruption Of The Body s Circadian Clock
The circadian clock in humans has influence over many processes in the body. The most
prevalent of those arguably is its determination of our sleep and wake cycles (Joseph et al. 2008).
Sufficient sleep is an essential part of human health and a lack of sleep can have severe
repercussions on the human body and mind (Hamet and Tremblay 2006). Disruption of the body
s circadian cycle, by genetic means, can cause: ineffective homeostasis of the sleep cycle,
imbalances in the amounts of time spent awake and asleep, and the timing of sleep s onset, all of
which can contribute to dangerous sleep related disorders (Hamet and Tremblay 2006). (Joseph et
al. 2008) states that he circadian clock is composed of a 24 hour cycle called a primary... Show

The disorders discussed, FASPS, FFI, and narcolepsy, are examples of how single gene mutations
can completely off put the body s circadian rhythms (Borbley et al.1999; Joseph et al. 2008).
Additionally, these disorders support the main concept that the master of homeostatic balance in
our body s sleep cycle is the clock gene, and that even the smallest of changes on the molecular
level can result in significant changes in physiological out put (Hamet and Tremblay 2006).
Complete human health is reliant on sleep, and sleep is reliant on the clock

The Functions of Griots
Djeli Mamoudo Kouyate is a griot in the country of Guinea, West Africa; he lives in the village
of Djeliba Koro, on the Niger River, and is the main source of information for the book Sundiata:
An Epic of Old Mali. The book focuses on the trials and tribulations of Sundiata, a legendary
warrior, king, and founder of the Mali Empire; and the functions of griots in serving their king.
Sundiata is born to Sogolon, and is supposed to become the king of Mali, but Sundiata cannot
walk until he turns 11 years old, and his half brother, Dankaran Touman, becomes the king.
Dankaran exiles Sundiata and his family, and Balla Fasseke, Sundiata s griot, prepares the family
for exile. During exile, Sundiata gathered a very strong army, with dreams... Show more content on

The history of kings is also important information for the griots to have so they can tell kings of
their ancestors battles, to make sure the king knows what he is capable of and to give him
inspiration for the battle ahead.
Second, griots have a passion for music, and this is also one of their most important
contributions to their king and culture. The griot uses song for many purposes, and is very
skilled at creating emotion with their songs. A song can be to praise, to celebrate, to raise spirits
of warriors, or to control. When Sogolon, Sundiata s mother, first came to the town of Nianiba,
the griots in the crowd sang songs of praise (10). An excellent example of the griots using a song
to celebrate is on p.21, when Sundiata first stood up and bent a metal bar into a bow, Balla
Fasseke, Sundiata s griot, sang Hymn to the Bow , a song created to celebrate and inform the
townspeople of the young mans power. Page 54 contains a song by the griots with the specific
purpose of inspiring Sundiata s warriors to victory. They had won their battle earlier that day, but
Sundiata s army was fearful for the future. This song helped ensure victory for Sundiata, another
essential attribute of griots. Griots have found yet another use for song, to control or persuade.
This is best seen when Balla Fasseke is playing king Soumaoro s balafon (40). King Soumaoro is a
rival king to Sundiata, and this is a

Relationships Among Abuse Families Essay
My topic for this research paper that I choose to discuss is relationships among abuse families.
The reason why I choose this for my research paper is because I believe that bringing attention to
abuse that happens among families is important and more research should be happening
frequently. Another reason why I choose this topic is because I wanted to research and discuss
the different types of factors that can cause all sorts of abuse in families. When reading our
book for the class I realized there was not a lot of information covering this specific topic. Since
not a lot of information on this topic wasn t covered in our book I decided that was another reason
why I choose to research and write about this topic. I have three detailed sources that I found that

My job as a special ed teacher in the future is to educate myself on the different types of abuse
that can occur within families and recognizing aggression signs some students may show in the
class which could be a sign they are being abused at home. In the future I may also be working
with low SES families that may be struggling and could be abusing substances as one of the
articles mentions. I will also make sure to look for signs from students that may show they are
anxious when anyone comes near them or nervous about everything in general which could
indicate they are being abused in some way at home. Overall I believe that picking a topic like I
did and researching about how different types of abuse can affect family relationships is important
especially for me since in the future I will be going into the field of teaching and most likely I
could be dealing with students in my classroom who are victims of

Pros And Cons Of Native American Mascots
Is it okay to have Native American images as mascots? Some of the mascots names are Red Skins,
Braves and Cleveland Indians. They chose these mascots because they thought that they would be
intimidating to the other team. Imagine having a pink bunny for a mascot; other teams are not
going to think that that is intimidating. Using Native American images and names in
professional, collegiate and high school sports does not reinforce and perpetuate stereotypes
because it is not harmful and it only it representing school pride. Mascots are not harmful to
Native Americans. The AP reports, At Florida State, Wetherell said the NCAA was trying to
embarrass the school for using its nickname, even though the Seminole Tribe of Florida has given
the university permission to continue using it, (AP 2005). None of the Mascots display
discriminatory or abusive behavior towards other members of another race. The Native Americans

Thesis Statement Of Career Motivation
6. DISCUSSION OF RESULTS
Because of the nature of the construction industry, it was not surprising that most respondents were

offer unbiased feedbacks on the survey. As may be seen from Tables 3 through 5, the motivational
factor of programme choice selection is attributable by five constructs. Two of the five sub
hypotheses were substantiated in hypothesis 1. A positive relationship is found between career
motivation factor and satisfaction with choice is not unexpected. This is because serious shortfall
may exist if there is a mismatch between the learning satisfactions with career motivation. The
consequence is truancy, poor grade and dropout, in turn, the lower satisfaction with the decision
made. Career motivation is very critical for most people or graduate. For a prospective student,

Tough Love in Mel Gibson s Hamlet and Branagh s Hamlet Essay
Tough Love in Mel Gibson s Hamlet and Branagh s Hamlet
One of the most emotional and moving scenes in William Shakespeare s tragedy Hamlet is in Act
III, Scene I lines 90 155 in which the title character becomes somewhat abusive toward his once
loved girlfriend Ophelia. It is interesting to examine the possible motives behind Hamlet s blatant
harshness in this Get the to a nunnery scene toward the easily manipulated and mild mannered girl.
While watching Kenneth Branagh and Mel Gibson s film adaptations of the play, the audience may
recognize two possibilities of the many that may exist which may explain the Prince s contemptible
behavior; Kenneth Branaugh seems to suggest that this display of animosity will help the troubled

Other than the amusing fishmonger and words, words, words scene, a more serious approach to
conveying this insanity could be taken; Hamlet s scurrilous behavior toward the fair Ophelia
could be taken as a sure sign of craziness, for Polonius is quite positive that Hamlet is deeply in
love with his daughter. By mistreating Ophelia, perchance Hamlet can trick Polonius into
believing that he has gone mad; Hamlet s display of hostility to a person he is thought to have
cared deeply about may promote the idea that he is not the same person as he always was.
Although it can not necessarily be proven, it appears that in the Hall of Mirrors Hamlet is aware
that Claudius and Polonius are spying. He takes Ophelia roughly and pushes her face into the
mirror, only inches from her father. This act seems to be directly aimed to the men hiding behind
the door, not Ophelia.
From the beginning of Mel Gibson s Hamlet, the audience recognizes that the Prince is more
subdued and introspective than in Branagh s version. Though this Hamlet is still angry with his
mother, he seems more reluctant to express any disappointment in her direction. In the very first
scene of the film, Gertrude asks Hamlet to stay in Denmark, and he consents in an immediate and
submissive fashion. He then proceeds to drop to his knees and hug her about the waist. Gibson
seems much more boyish and timid, but it is still safe to assume that he

War on Japan Essay
through history, man always seems to be at war. In some cases he is the attacker, in others the

What if Army bombers could take off an aircraft carrier? Low tried his idea on Admiral King. King
thought the idea had potential so he sent it on to Captain Donald Duncan to turn his plan into fact.
This he did, and the Tokyo Raid became fact instead of fiction.
The first step in the plan was finding a leader. General Arnold requested Lieutenant Colonel
James Dolittle as the man to select the plane and the men for the mission. Dolittle accepted the
challenge without hesitation. Arnold let him know in no uncertain terms that he was to be a
planner not a pilot. As Doolittle went to work on the project, he saw a lot of problems. First of
all, carrier landings were impossible for twin engine bombers. Next, the total air trip was eleven
hundred miles. The closest landing area would be in Russia, but Joseph Stalin would not let them
land there because he didn t want to be invaded by Japan since he already had his hands full with
the Germans. Fortunately, China said it was all right to land there but they said it reluctantly. With
these considerations and others, Doolittle determined that the chances of the mission succeeding
was fifty fifty. Despite the odds, the decision was made to begin the project.
As the first step, despite Arnold, Doolittle wrote himself into the plan as a pathfinder. Doolittle s

Analysis Of Ernest Hemingway s Hills Like White Elephants
Discussing the Elephant in the Room The topic of Hills Like White Elephants by Ernest
Hemingway continues to be a hot button issue, even 90 years after the story s publication.
Though not as scandalous as it must have been in 1927, it remains the subject of great debate.
Two lovers are awaiting a train that will whisk them away to Madrid for the purpose of an
abortion. Even though the decision was made before arriving at the station, they continue to
debate whether she will go through with it. The American s persuasive dialogue makes it
apparent that he wants Jig to have the abortion and is concerned that she will change her mind,
however she is more concerned with the fate of her relationship with the man and the effects an
abortion may have on her. The first indication of a division between the lovers is the description
of the setting where Hemingway writes ...the station was between two lines of rails in the sun (2
3), the rail lines representing the two people and the station the division between them. Upon
arriving, they immediately orders two beers. The lovers order several alcoholic drinks during
their short 40 minute wait at the station, presumably to ease the tension and calm the anxiety.
Once the couple is settled with their drinks, Jig makes an observation about their view of the
hills, saying They look like white elephants, (9) to which the American responds I ve never seen
one, (10). Here is where the proverbial can of worms is opened. The woman

Description of the American Electorate and Changes in Its...
United States of America has a democratic political system with two major parties: Democratic
and Republican. This research paper will provide the insight on the social and cultural
characteristics of both Republican and Democratic loyalists as well as uncommitted middle. Many
changes occurred in the behavior of American electorate since 1952, however, some trends remain
today. The existence of the Electoral College affects the campaigns of the presidential candidates.
This paper will also analyse the concerns of citizens with this system and whether it is beneficial
for candidates and reveals the true choice of the population.

In addition, recent researches prove that party identification is stable and does not change very
often. The Republican loyalists Protestants valuing traditions, tend to identify themselves with this
party for a lasting time for many generations. Family traditions, the set life style and family
business continuation are cultural characteristics of Republicans. Democrats, on the contrary favor
changes in all fields of life. They are more open to change job positions and move to another place,
providing more freedom of choice to their children. Today, Republicans have more support from
American citizens.
There are factors which do not influence party identity and which are independent on social
grouping or cultural values. For several decades there have been little change at both aggregate and
individual level on party identification. The state of economy and performance of the president
does not change or determine party loyalty. However, party loyalties have a powerful influence on
citizens positions in key issues and voting decisions. The most important notion is that party
identification is based mainly on identification with social grouping rather than on evaluation of
party s ideology or policy. People ask themselves two questions: What kind of social groups comes
to my mind when I think about Republicans, Independents and Democrats? Which group best
describes me?

Solon Vs Solon
What is the underlying mechanism that causes the downfall of leaders and the collapse of
societies? A superstitious individual could attribute these transitions to the gods. Solon, ancient
Athenian poet and political philosopher, would disagree with this sentiment and argue that it is
men themselves who cause their own destruction. Often, the unwillingness of rulers to hear and
understand the potential dangers of their greed and selfishness starts this process. To ascertain
the best possible choice, one must look to the future. What are the plausible outcomes and
pitfalls of one s decisions? A failure to consider this question and a lack of foresight is where
many go wrong. In both Herodotus representation of Solon and in his own poetry, Solon is a
wise man who devotes his entire life to his objectives and warns foolish leaders of their
irresponsibility. He offers a political ideology about the rise and fall of powerful men and great
empires. This can be briefly summarized by Herodotus when he says human prosperity never
abides long in the same place (Herodotus 1.5.3 4). However, the representations of Solon are in
some ways different. For example, the Herodotean version uses anecdotes to teach moral lessons,
while the lyric Solon explicitly lays out his grievances against the Athenian oligarchy and proposes
ways to reform Athens. Solon s reformations brought Athens out of an age of treachery and
lawlessness rife with dishonest, unjust and essentially criminal rulers. He

1.Fundamentals of Scientific Management
1.1 Introduction The principal object of management should be to secure the maximum prosperity
for the employer, coupled with the maximum prosperity for each employee. It would seem to be
so self evident that maximum prosperity for the employer, coupled with maximum prosperity for
the employee, ought to be the two leading objects of management, that even to state this fact
should be unnecessary. No one can be found who will deny that in the case of any single
individual the greatest prosperity can exist only when that individual has reached his highest state
of efficiency; that is, when he is turning out his largest daily output. Why is it, in the face of the
self evident fact that maximum prosperity can exist only as the result of the determined effort of
each workman to turn out each day his largest possible day s work, that the great majority of our
men are deliberately doing just the opposite, and that even when the men have the best of intentions
their work is in most

Isolation In One Flew The Cuckoo s Nest
Many times directors or famous playwrights are forced to choose between to astounding leads
when creating a production. Both characters play large roles in a production however the main
character or lead role of the play ends up being the central focus of the production that is told
through the perspective of another characterthat often serves as a vehicle for an director to subtlety
alter and reveal a larger plot at the end. This is what Ken Kesey author of One flew the Cuckoo s
Nest was forced to do when choosing between the primary character named McMurphy and
Bromden as narrators for his novel. However McMurphy was not selected as the narrator because

During their time in the electro shock chamber McMurphy was not only able to continue
growing bigger (Kesey 305) in the eyes of the patients, but Bromden was able to resist the fog
that had been caused by the electro shock exposure so many times before and regain his
individuality along with his sense of size again. By returning Bromden s individuality to him
and gravely injuring Ratched upon his return to the ward McMurphy had finally dealt a
crippling blow to Ratched s iron grip of control over the ward that he had been loosening since
his arrival. For McMurphy s attack he was turned into a vegetable, but adding insult to injury
even in a severely weakened state McMurphy had i taken away Ratched s biggest symbol of
power over the ward in Bromden. Bromden was her symbol of power because for so long
Ratched was able to control Bromden making a patient who towered over her physically feel
small and powerless under the constant oppression of Ratched as she made him nothing more than
a metaphorical slave through her tight control of the ward s schedule. Now with no symbol of
power the patients McMurphy risked so much helping took away both her control of the ward and
their fear of her. During the chaos created by this new power vacuum many patients began to help

The Culture Of American Culture
American culture is portrayed as that of every other countries traditions, rituals, and cultures. As
Americans, do we know our culture to be as anything other than that of a melting pot? That
being said, is it ok to say for us to say, I can take your culture because it s meant to be shared
anyway. Most of us have lived here our entire lives and it s what we have grown accustomed to.
Can we speak on anyone else s behalf? I can. Even though I am American by birth, my blood is
Mexican. I may not face the same hardships in this country to the extent of that of someone who
is of Middle Eastern decent such as my land and oil being drained, or my people being racially
abused and frowned upon so negatively, especially in air ports. I hate Cinco de mayo, and
unfortunately for minorities, culture and everything else in the U.S. is controlled and ruled by a
system that caters only to the white.
A culture inherited by the any nation must meet the actual needs of [its] communities.
Communities must also respect the expectations and aspirations set directly by indigenous people
in order to prevent the misappropriation and misuse of traditional and cultural expressions.
(T.P.T.C.E) The same way I cite and give credit to my sources on the essay I am writing, should be
applied directly and effectively the same way to other peoples traditions that fit accordingly. White
people must also acknowledge the fact that there is an ever present, rite of passage, for them, in

Archetypes Of A Mentor In Edward Bloor s Tangerine
Everyone has had someone block them from gaining success. The person writing this has, and
so have the readers. But, everyone has had a mentor, or a role model, once in their life. A
mentor, in literature, is a mythological archetype. In Edward Bloor s novel, Tangerine, Antoine
Thomas and Luis Cruz fit as the mythological archetype of the mentor. Antoine and Luis are
mentors to Paul, who is the hero, because they are both positive figures, who motivate Paul. For
instance, when Paul was over at Tino s house working on the science project, he was told that
Luis used to play soccer, too. Luis was also handicapped so he didn t understand how. Tino then
told Paul that Luis had to be the goalie. Paul thought Tino was trying to make fun of him, but he
wasn t. The text states, I looked at Tino to see if he was mocking me. He wasn t. He was just
making conversation (Bloor 175). In other words, Paul really thought that Tino was making fun
of him. This conversation helped Paul realize that he could still play soccer with his loss of
eyesight if Luis can play with a knee injury. The word mocking adds a negative tone to this quote,
but it also helps show how this helps Paul. In addition to Luis, Antoine helps motivate Paul, too.
For example, Paul had gotten a call from Joey, Paul s best friend, saying that Antoine was at Mr.
Donnelly s, a newspaper journalist, house. Paul rode down to see what was happening. When he
got there, they were outside. Antoine came down and looked at

as an individual lament, presenting the aspects representative of that genre that is scattered about in

correspond specifically to the inadequate escapes he had. There is no historical context to know

5). David s trust in God is established from antecedent experiences with God who has redeemed
David (v. 8, 22) and who has demonstrated faithfulness (v. 3). The affidavit of trust continues in
verses 6 8. After David put himself in God s hands he reminisced that God has not given him
into the hands of his enemies (v.8). Verses 9 13 delineate the astute condition of David as he
prays. David speaks of how his life is consumed by anguish and tells of his suffering of his whole
being that has been going on for a lifetime (v. 9 13). As the passage continues David permutates
into declarations of trust, my times are in your hands (v. 15) while in verses 16 18 David calls to
God asking him to deliver him from his enemies once again. The psalms conclude on various
admirable annotations of praise and trust (v. 19 24).
Application: In this passage, the promise of Psalm 2:12 is affirmed; if you take refuge in God, you
will be happy. The final words of Psalm 31 are not directed toward God but to the congregation.
David takes the position of an instructor and gives words of advice that can still be applied to today

majority of this passage calling out to God to save him and be his refuge from his enemies (v. 1 6,

Natural Resources of Texas Essay example
Natural Resources of Texas
When one thinks of natural resources, probably the first things that come to mind are fossil
fuels. If you bring the state of Texas into the equation, you think of the big oil wells. Texas tea,
black gold, swamp juice, whatever you want to call it, oil is a big part of people s perception of
Texan natural resources. But there are a lot more natural resources in Texas than you might think.
The natural soils make for good farming and ranching conditions, we ve got great rock deposits
for a variety of industrial uses, and we have a number of different mineral deposits scattered
through the state. It s time we took a look at some of the many natural resources Texas has to offer.

The most important of these is the Permian Basin. In the latter half of the Paleozoic era,
sediments rich in organic matter accumulated here when a shallow sea got cut off from the main
oceans and evaporated off, leaving lots of dead critters and evaporites. These sediments eventually
got buried and compressed, causing the oil and gas to form pockets in permeable rock, surrounded
by impermeable rocks so that they couldn t escape. There the fluid sits until someone pokes a hole
(well) into the area and the contents rush out as the tremendous pressure is released. Other areas of
Texas with notable petroleum sources include East Texas s Woodbine Formation (formed in the Late
Cretaceous), much of the Gulf Coast and the Gulf itself, and various smaller pockets in South and
South Central Texas.
Coal may be overshadowed by petroleum in Texas, but it s still here. Pennsylvanian age
bituminous coal was mined in North Central Texas in sizable quantities. Bituminous coal can
also be found in Cretaceous age rocks in near Eagle Pass and in the Trans Pecos region. But the
major player in Texas coal is Lignite, even though it is a lower grade coal. The Texas lignite
comes from vegetative material deposited around 50 million years ago in coastal lagoon type
environments, near rivers and their deltas. The material was buried before it could decay, so it sat
there and was buried under more and more sediments. The enormous

Pauline expresses that there is a lot of arguing with her Dad amp; Stepmother. This provides risk
for her as serious conflict between caregivers and children can put them at the risk of the
problem behaviours (Channing Bete Company 2004). The separation of a child s parents can
put him/her at risk especially if there are a lot of changes or that the child does not have a good
relationship with at least one parent (Burt 2002). It has been indicated in a study that girls in
two parent families are less likely to act out risky behaviours than those in single parent families.
(M.D. Resnick et al 1993). Children or adolescents who are well reasonably well adjusted after
divorce nearly always come from an environment where there is a firm, responsive, nurturing,
supportive adult (Henderson 2002). Pauline s recent history is shows this sort of environment has
not been there for her. A factor that protects an adolescent is having an adult in her life she can
trust and with whom she can confide. The presence of an adult Mentor in an adolescents life
helps reduce the participation in risk taking behaviours. (Beier et al 2000). Pauline reports having
a close relationship with her Aunty Sarah who lives down the road with her Nan. She is able to
confide with Aunty Sarah and feels close to her. This is a significant protective factor for Pauline.

A Relationship Between Hero And Her Eventual Suitor
In this passage, the reader is exposed to two distinct categories of relationships, one of which being
the relationship between Hero and her eventual suitor which is a type of relationship borne out of
necessity and social conformity. Both Anthony s and Leonato s statements in this passage support
this traditional ideal of marriageand love by dictating to Hero her answer in regards to the
impending proposal from whom Hero s family believes to be Don Pedro rather than granting her
the power of choice. Anthony blatantly assumes that Hero will adhere to the course of action her
father wishes saying, Well, niece, I trust you will be ruled by your father (2.1.42 43). If Hero is
being ruled by the desires of her father, it makes her decision to say yes one of necessity in that
she must give the answer of her father and not that in her own heart for fear of some sort of
retribution. Leonato later reinforces this notion about relationships in stating, Daughter remember
what I told you. If the Prince do solicit you in that kind, you know your answer (2.1.56 57). Alone
this statement is somewhat vague leaving it available to some interpretation, one of which being
that Leonato is reassuring Hero that she discovered the response that best fits her desires in a
conversation held offstage and that she should not second guess herself. However, if this reminder
is applied within the context of Anthony s previous statement it takes on a different meaning that

Understanding And Acting Upon Consumer Behavior
Consumer Behavior Booking.com Understanding and acting upon consumer behavior is at the
core of becoming a successful retailer. Today s business environment is packed with competing
firms, all seeking to convenience customers to choose them over their competitors. Many
industries, such as the soda, cell phone, and laundry detergent industries are dominated by a just a
few or a sole firm. Therefore, more than ever it is becoming increasingly difficult to disrupt the
large base of habitual consumers. A consumer s buying process is what must be closely analyzed by
any existing or new firm that is attempting to be competitive in today s business environment. A
customer will have both utilitarian and hedonic needs. Often companies will attempt to merge these
two types of needs in order to create an all encompassing experience. For example, the Wegmans
store experience doesn t only satisfy the utilitarian need of purchasing groceries, it also provides
stimulation (an aspect of satisfying hedonic needs) through visuals and well organized displays.
Paying attention to such details and so creating a multi dimensional experience creates a
competitive advantage. Perhaps the most radical change in consumer behavior happened when the
new era of the internet began and the way customers started to search for and evaluate information
changed overnight. Today customers face the challenge of being overwhelmed by information
rather than not being able to access it. The internet has also

Since Elmer s doesn t only offer alcohol service there is a large number of differently titled
employees, which then takes more management planning and organizing. Due to there being a food
section and the legal implications of running a bar staff members such as a chef, and security are
needed. Following this, other members of staff are needed to run the bar are, bartenders, cleaners,
manager, and a maintenance team. With the bar being located in a student populated area, the
scheduling at Elmer s must be made in regards to the demand from the customer specifically on
the Thursday, Friday, and Saturday nights. Scheduling is imperative to ensure the business runs

Company Culture And Employee Motivation
According to consultant and entrepreneur Dave Gray Connected companies have the advantage in
today s connected world, because they learn and move faster than their competitors . Watch the
presentation on key principles and critically discuss the challenges and benefits for company culture
and employee motivationto accommodate this type of structure. Refer to examples of existing
companies using this structure and relevant theory.
There has been a change in company culture since the 1930 s due to the rise of service industries
and the steady decline of manufacturing. Management style affects both company culture and
employee motivation.
Connected companies focus on the individual worker and each employee is given a responsibility.

There is a hierarchy of authority and leadership as well as a strong chain of command. The
leadership style is therefore very authoritative and task oriented. The communication runs from the
top down and the workers at the operational level have no power in comparison to top level
management and CEO s. This works well in manufacturing companies because it is a relatively
stable industry and is suited to this rational and task oriented approach. The aim of the rational goal
model is to maximize output and key writers on this include Smith, Frederick and Ford.
The philosophy of Adam Smith revolved around managers finding the optimal use of resources
within organisations, with no regard for the well being of the worker. He advocated the division
of labour to increase productivity and wrote about this in his 1776 book The Wealth of Nations
where he used a Pin Factory as a model to illustrate the benefits of labour division. He proved that
when manufacturing is divided into a series of small tasks, such that each individual performs the
same task over and over again, the production line moves much quicker. This promotes efficiency in
the use of resources. However, he also discovered through this example that this type of repetitive
work has negative effect of workers intellect, happiness and motivation.
The development of scientific management by Frederick Taylor also played a role in defining

Disadvantages Of FTA
1.Introduction:
Economists of all time, either classical, new classical or modern, have never denied the
importance of external trade. International trade have been considered as a back bone of the
economy of any country. The issue of trade and free trade has been at the prime agendas of
economists for over last two centuries. David Ricardo and Adam Smith talked about the importance
of free trade, and given Comparative and Absolute Advantage theories. Free trade or globalization
is a hotly debated phenomenon in the world economic system of 21st century. If the economic
affluence and economic growth of all the nations of the world could be brought at par with each
other by the free flow of goods and services, irrespective of boundaries, under the free trade banner,
then it is a situation for which, every country should struggle for. Bilateral trading arrangements,
although less preferred to multilateral ones, are one of the instruments employed by both developed
and developing countries, to protect their export markets and to guarantee their trading activities in
the future.
A Free Trade Agreement is a legally binding treaty between two or more countries to liberalize
trade, facilitate the flow of trade and investment, and bring about closer economic integration. Free
Trade Agreements (FTAs) are a common type of arrangement between two or more countries, it
allows the partners to give each other privileged market access. FTAs support the free flow of trade
and investment

of Social Media. Merriam Webster s Dictionary defines social media as forms of electronic
communication through which users create online communities to share information, ideas,
personal messages, and other content (Social Media). Social Media provides great tools and
features for social interaction with others in the form of file sharing including photos, videos,
and real time chat. Some of the most common and popular social sites are FaceBook, Twitter,
YouTube, and Instagram. Social Media sites provide numerous entertainment features, as well
as a plethora of ways for people from all over the world to connect with each other, make new
friends, or connect with old ones. I feel these sites truly share a common goal of uniting,
connecting, and bringing people closer together but, there is a dark side to be noted. Social
Media, if used in moderation, can be a useful tool indeed but, like anything else when used
excessively, it can be dangerous to our mental health and well being. The abuse of Social Media
can have addictive qualities which may adversely affect ones mental health. Regardless of its
effects though, Social Media is still widely used for various purposes in society and is no doubt
here to stay. FaceBook for example, has grown enormously popular in recent years and

A comparison of Behar’s The Vulnerable Observer and...
When presented with ethnographic works, the first thing one would normally do would be to
compare. The Vulnerable Observer by Ruth Behar and In the Realm of the Diamond Queen by
Anna Lowenhaupt Tsing, both demonstrate key factors that prove to be prevalent throughout the
anthropological world today. Through the examination of each piece, it is clear that they both
share similar restrictions, trials and tribulations. As both books begin to unravel, the themes of
marginality and borders (in a multitude of contexts) rise to the surface. Besides the similarities,
there are also major differences between the two pieces of work. Behar and Tsing share a very
different style of anthropology, which creates am interesting contrast on the way each... Show more

Also, throughout this ethnographic piece it is evident that there is some divide in the way men and
women are treated. This relates to Mascia Lee s piece on Gender and Anthropology as it examines
the borders that (usually, women) are faced with throughout the field of anthropology. On page 20
of this article, it discusses the implications that borders and limitations impose on the levels of
sexual stratification throughout the anthropology world. (Masica Lee, 2000)
The next theme that is a relevant source of comparison for both novels would be on the basis of
marginality. In Behar s book, there are clearly instances where marginalized groups are
displayed. Since Behar is originally from Cuba, she discusses the way in which her life was
before she moved to the United States. One example in particular that stands out was the moment
when Behar was conversing with her friend Marta. Behar states that, ...promised I would do
everything in my power to protect Marta from the many perils of modernity on this side of the
border. (Behar, 1996, p. 98) This quote displays the way in which Marta, who came from Mexico,
was about to conform to the norms of American society, as she was about to partake in a
hysterectomy. This relates to marginality due to the fact that where Marta originated from, this
would have never happened. This also relates to Mary Douglas s article on External Boundaries.
Within this article, Mary Douglas states that, ...it has external boundaries,

The Role Of Cognitive Dissonance In Society
In such a vast world of creation choices and opposites the topic of cognitive dissonance is all but
inevitable. From its pure form and early research too its expanded and evolved form in present
day it has always been prevalent. In this paper i plan on evaluating this mindset and finding not
only ways to solve this problem but its importance in society since its discovery.
Cognitive dissonance is the concept of two opposed ideas that cause either a change in one s life
beliefs or morals. This refers to a situation involving conflicting attitudes, beliefs or behaviors. This
produces a feeling of discomfort leading to a change in one of the attitudes beliefs or actions to
reduce the discomfort and restore balance. For example, when people smoke (behavior) and they
know that smoking causes cancer (cognition), they are in a state of cognitive dissonance. This
concept of cognitive dissonance can expand to a much deeper sense. From people s everyday
habits and changes ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
While fringe members were more inclined to recognize that they had made fools of themselves and
to put it down to experience, committed members were more likely to re interpret the evidence to
show that they were right all along (the earth was not destroyed because of the faithfulness of the
cult members). Festinger s (1957) cognitive dissonance theory suggests that we have an inner drive
to hold all our attitudes and behavior in harmony and avoid disharmony (or dissonance). This is
known as the principle of cognitive consistency. When there is an inconsistency between attitudes
or behaviors (dissonance), something must change to eliminate the

Pillar Of Islam
The religious practice of Islam began with the prophet Muhammed, which means surrender in
Islam. The central idea is to surrender to the will og God. The Qu ran is a book that actually
contains very little about Muhammed himself but more of the stories of the prophet that provides
narration of his life. The religious practice of Islammeans to submit to God, as soon as the Islamic
armies conquered land they began building mosques. The religious practice is based on five pillars
called the arkan, which all members should adhere too.
The first pillar of Islam is the Profession of faith, the Shahada. The profession of Shahada is the
most fundamental expression of faith in the Islamic practice, it states that the only god id God

Apple Starbucks
Abstract
In 2007, Apple and Starbucks became partners in the venture of iTunes store. Over time, another
entity entered the equation, AT T. What does this mean to the customer, the dependability of each
to provide superior services to their respective products and services? As it is seen within the IT
infrastructure, each entity needs to present certain services to keep up the maintenance of the
services on each level, to a point to where one, in an ideal world, for logistical reasons,

O Brother Where Art Thou Character Analysis
O Brother, Where Art Thou? is a 2001 film produced by Joel and Ethan Coen set in 1930 s
Mississippi. The film is loosely based on The Odyssey by Homer. George Clooney stars as
Ulysses Everett McGill, John Turturro as Pete Hogwallop, and Tim Blake Nelson as Delmar O
Donnell. Everett convinces Pete and Delmar to run away from prison to search for treasure. Pete
and Delmar have big plans as to what they plan to do with the treasure; Pete wants to open a
restaurant, and Delmar wants to buy back his family s farm. The men have several adventures
along the way and meet interesting characters. The first person they come to is a nameless man on
a railroad hand cart warning the men to not seek treasure. They continue on and meet Tommy who

The movie opens with prisoners singing Po Lazarus which sets the scene that the movie will
have a focus on the music instead of it just being in the background. Next, as the trio is trying to
get on the train to stowaway and get away from the police, Big Rock Candy Mountain is in the
background but is meant to be heard loud and clear. It is an upbeat folk song by Harry
McClintock from 1928 about his hobo days. This is fitting for Everett, Pete, and Delmar s
current situation. All of the music in the movie is either traditional or from the Great
Depression era. The music selections help to authenticate the movie for the era more than the
realness of the story based on an epic poem. Man of Constant Sorrow is what the men sing to
Mr. Lund to get money; he loves the song and has it played on numerous radio stations. The
song is a foundation to the film as it is sung twice and in the background two more times as an
instrumental version. This is important with movies in general to have a song to connect the
movie to and a movie to connect a song. The movie almost feels like musical at some points only
except that no one breaks out in song. When Everett and the others go to his house to get Penny
s ring, they are met by Sheriff Cooley and his gang that are ready to hang them for escaping
prison. There are graves that have been dug by gravediggers; they are standing over the graves
singing O Death and give an eerie feeling to the scene. The plot of the film also contributes greatly
to the success of the

female figure who breaks down gender discrimination. Angelou says, To describe my mother

traits. Traditional genderstereotypes show women as being submissive, sympathetic, and irresolute.
Conversely, Vivian is a womanwho has no mercy or sympathy and has a passionate nature. Angelou

The Tipping Point Analysis
Most celebrities just stick to shining in the spotlight and being a star, but a few use their fame and
platform to start a business and get a better name for themselves. In the book, The Tipping Point
by Malcolm Gladwell, the author introduces a new concept, The Laws of Epidemics, which
includes The Law of the Few, Stickiness Factor and Power of Context. A celebrityis always seen a
connector, people who have incredibly widespread social networks that play an integral role in
the spread of ideas and a salesperson, a person that specializes in the act of persuasion (Gladwell).
The stickiness factor plays a role in this particular trend because it shows how and why celebrities
around the world are all starting a new profession. Power of contexts... Show more content on

Howard Roark, The Fountainhead s protagonist and Rand s quintessential ideal man whose
independent happiness, reasoning mind, and moral purpose of life are absolute, diverges from
mainstream society into a personal autonomy; thus, he becomes invulnerable to the irrationalities of
humanity. In contrast, Gail Wynand, a dominant self made aristocrat, possesses morals that
coextend with Roark s objectivist attitude, yet he deprives himself of one key component that
Roark fully embodies: ethics. Wynand s obsession in seeking the approval of the public rather than

popular consent to impress others, while pandering to the most nauseating ideals of society the

have it too. Reason is what embodies man s morals which can only be discovered by man s
senses. Wynand surrenders to the life of a second hander because his integrity was destroyed;
therefore, without reason it is impossible to create a sense of individualism. He succumbes to
society, realizing that man s most prime asset is acceptance: the ability to play the cards they re
dealt with the most minimal concern for the well being of others. He caters to man s lowest
values because his illusionary ethics are replaced by the demand for social approval. It s
because the morals of his professional life mirror Peter Keating s. At the dawn of his life,
Wynand is placed on the path to become a fountainhead, but he chooses the life of a second
hander as it s much easier and he doesn t have to consider the sensibility of others in his quest for
total power, or for what he believes to be total

Sisterhood Is Complicaated Summary
Critical Analysis of Sisterhood is Complicated by Ruth Padawer In her essay, Sisterhood is
Complicated , Ruth Padawer illustrates complications and triumphs women and transgenders
experience while living in the same society. Padawer goes into detail about how the women feel
towards the transgenders and how the transgenders feel being in a college centered around women.
Often throughout the essay, she talks about how women make up Wellesley College who want to
have the greatest power and strength, by defying social norms and creating their own place to
learn. This has been the motto of the college since its beginning, but now, there are transgenders
who are entering the college as women, just to gain entry into this environment. Although it seems
as if there wouldn t be a huge problem with this, it does go against the mandates created by the
college. In this essay. Padawer explains these topics in a certain way,... Show more content on

Throughout the essay, she gives many examples that describe how women and transgender
students feel, however, too often they become repetitive. There are many stories that come from
personal accounts of students, but they tend to mix together. There are multiple examples that
take away from the essay by making it hard to follow. To fix this problem, Padawer could give
accounts from different people in the college, such as, how the President of the college feels or
even get some opinions from the alumnus of the college. By doing so, this would break up the
essay more and add varied types of examples. With that being said, it is also important for her to
include some data or statistics that help the reader understand this essay on a deeper level.
Statistics tend to help readers get a better understanding of how this issue affects people . By doing
these things, Padawer would be able to keep the reader s attention and keep the essay more

Change In Malcolm Gladwell s The Tipping Point

Malcolm Gladwell s The Tipping Point is radical because he talks about how the environment can
change people behavior. The environment could have caused people to change for better or worst.
For example: When people were placed in an environment of filth they are more violent and hectic
causing the crime rate to increase. When you come from a bad neighborhood you are statistically
more likely to be dangerous and belligerent. If you were to place people into a different
environment, you can expect change (not saying it always work). Throughout the story Malcolm
gives many examples of change. He starts off by talking about four young men who were on a
New York train. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The change came from simply fixing the trains, not from wanting to change but from cleaning up
the environment. Showing that they are more than what they see. Clean makes you feel better
about yourself as for dirty makes you feel scum like. So why not act how you feel? It is events
like what I stated above that helped the people to see that change can be just as simple as cleaning
the train. Being in an environment filled with filth, stench, and nothingness in the air, can lead you
to doing bad things. In the story four men were acting like they had something and when
approached a man were then shot. If you dig deeper, you truly find out the four young men didn t
have an easy life. They came from a horrible place. Somewhere less fortunate than they needed to
be. That key setting caused them to react and see things more angrily and act out as such.
Malcolm Gladwell writes:
The encounter between Bernie Goetz and those four youths on the subway: Allen, Ramseur,
Cabey, and Canty. At least two of them, according to some reports, appear to have been on drugs
at the time of the incident. They all came from the Claremont Village housing project in one of the
worst parts of the South Bronx. Cabey was, at the time, under indictment for armed robbery. Canty
had a prior felony for possession of stolen property. Allen had been previously arrested for
attempted assault.

Tesla Ratios
While financial statements can be quite extensive, it is important for companies to completely
understand all aspects of their statements. In regards to the balance sheet, there are financial ratios
that can be computed in order to determine the profitability, liquidity, and solvency of a company.
Both Ford and Tesla are large car companies that have lots of assets. By examining the current
ratio for both companies, accountants, investors and creditors can assess the liquidity and
efficiency for Tesla and Ford to pay off their short term liabilities with its current assets. The
current ratio is a very significant measure tool as these short term liabilities would be due within
the next year. Thus, the companies have a limited time to acquire the funds necessary to pay off the
liabilities. Current assets such as cash or cash equivalents can be easily liquidated. Typically, assets
on the balance sheetare listed in order of easiest liquidity. If companies have large current assets,
then they will be able... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

$2,816,274 (Figure A). For Ford, the total current assets as of December 2015 are $145,470,000;
the total current liabilities are $20,272,000 (Figure B). Tesla has a current liability ratio of .991
while Ford has a current liability ratio of 7.176 (Figure X). By comparing both ratios, Ford seems
to have just about the same number of current assets and current liabilities. Tesla, however, has
about 7 times more current assets than current liabilities. A higher current ratio is always more

Television And Radio Ratings Data
Television and radio ratings data are used primarily to assist decision making with regard to
advertising, programming, financial analysis, and policy making, all of which have significant
economic or social implications. It is important to realise that audience measurement is a business;
the firms involved are intent on using their analysis to make money. This essay will discuss why
ratings are used, what ratings actually measure, specific to radio audience ratings, and the extent to
which this information provides a satisfactory understanding of broadcast audiences. It will be seen
that ratings do not usually generate any deep understanding of why people are listening to
particular programmes, but do capture audience size and make up reasonably well. It is the
responsibility of broadcasters to understand their audience in order to effectively grow it. Radio and
television ratings measure various aspects of the broadcast audience, from how many people are in
an audience, their demographic make up and sometimes their preferences, with the objective of
gaining understandings which will help the broadcaster to grow audience participation and loyalty.
The reality is, though, that little true understanding of audience preferences is gained. The
understandings which are gained are often superficial, but sufficient to support business decision
making, particularly around advertising. As will be seen, the extent to which ratings generate
understanding of audience is all

The Chuckwallas and Evolutionary Research
Ever since Charles Darwin s first publication of On the Origin of Species in 1859, island habitats
have been used by a number of scientists as the most efficient laboratories to observe the natural
process of evolution taking place in modern day organisms. Several kilometers northeast of the
Galapagos Islands, where Darwin famously performed his research, is a small group of islands in
the Sea of CortГ©s, also known as the Gulf of California, between the Baja California peninsula
and Mexico (see Figure 1 on page 18). Here many evolutionary biologists of the 20th and 21st
century performed research on the insular organisms inhabiting these island habitats. One group of
lizards in particular known by the common name chuckwallas has gained a lot of focus in
evolutionary research.
Chuckwallas is the name of organisms in the Sauromalus genus apart of the Iguanidae family. They
are herbivorous lizards commonly found in the deserts of southwestern United States and
Northern Mexico. Three species, in particular, are found on the islands off the cost of the
mainland within the Sea of CortГ©s: Sauromalus obesus (= ater), Sauromalus varius, and
Sauromalus hispidus (see Figure 2 on page 20). S. obesus is a common species found on the
mainland as well as few islands, while S. varius are S. hispidus are endemic to specific islands in
the Sea of CortГ©s: mainly San Esteban Island and Angel de la Guarda Island, respectively. Both of
these insular species also show signs of gigantism

  • 2. Essay about Explanation for Criminality from a... Explanation for Criminality from a Sociological Perspective From a sociological perspective, explanation for criminality is found in two levels which are the subculture and the structural explanations. The sociological explanations emphasize aspects of societal arrangements that are external to the actor and compelling. A sociological explanation is concerned with how the structure of a society, institutional practices or its persisting cultural themes affect the conduct of its members. Individual differences are denied or ignored, and the explanation of the overall collective behavior is sought in the patterning of social arrangements that is considered to be both outside the actor and prior to him (Sampson, 1985). That is, the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It is in this change and variety that crime is defined. An application of this principle to criminology would find the roots of the crime in the fact that groups have developed different standards of appropriate behavior. In those complex cultures, each individual is subject to competing prescriptions for action. Another subcultural explanation of crime grows readily out of the fact that as we have seen, social classes experience different rates of arrest and conviction for serious offenses. When within a society categories are marked off by income, education and occupational prestige. Here differences are discovered among them in the amount an style of the crime. Further, differences are usually found between these social classes in their interests and morals. Its easy to describe these class linked patterns as a culture. This version of the subcultural explanation of crime holds that the very fact of learning the lessons of the subculture means that one acquires interests and preferences that place him in greater or lesser risk of breaking the law. Others argue that being reared on the lower class means learning a different culture from that which creates the criminal laws. The lower class subculture is said to have its own values as many of which run counter to the majority interest that support the laws against the serious predatory crimes. One needs to not that the indicators of class are not descriptions of class. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Character Analysis Of Gene Forrester In A Separate Peace... Gene Forrester is a character developed through his actions, dialogues, and thoughts that contribute to his personality traits. Gene s thoughts and actions distinguish his personality from that of other characters. Gene hides his true nature in the environment of the novel but exposes himself to the reader through his thinking and reflection. Gene is revealed to be insecure and jealous through his narration of the story. Firstly, Gene s insecurity and jealousy are unveiled through his actions, thinking, and dialogue. By deciphering his reasoning behind his actions, the reader discovers Gene s insecurity thriving beneath the surface. This is seen when Gene s close friend Phineas jokingly admits that Gene becoming valedictorian would make him jealous and Gene reacts by thinking, Then a second realization broke as clearly and bleakly as dawn at the beach. Finny had deliberately set out to wreck my studies (Knowles, 53).... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... He describes this realization as clear and bleak which indicates he feels it is obvious that Finny intends to sabotage Gene s academics. However, this is evidently uncharacteristic of Finny, and implies Gene is misreading and unconsciously manipulating the situation to justify the fact he does not have an A in one of his classes; he blames Finny for this. Gene s conjecture is a result of his attempt to defend himself. Insecurity breeds defensiveness as his poor self confidence allowed him to feel threatened by Finny s joking remarks and took his words sincerely. Due to Gene s defensive response, it displays his weak self confidence, proving his insecurity. Another personality trait Gene possesses is jealousy. His jealousy is exemplified in Gene s reaction when Finny is about to get in trouble, and he responds, This time he wasn t going to get away with it. I could feel myself ... Treadmills are great machines that can improve one s stamina and speed. Some people also use these machines to train animals such as dogs and horses. Megan McArdle states During the time when people are supposed to be learning to face an often hard world as adults, and going through the often uncomfortable process of building their intellectual foundations, they are demanding to be sheltered from anything that might challenge their beliefs or recall unpleasant facts to their mind. If you are removed from anything that goes against your beliefs, then you won t be able to adapt to the really world. The real world is all about adapting and learning with many different people that are very different from you. JW Wilson, from the Advanced Learning Institute says in a quote Some parents and educators believe that a child is like a huge container. To insure the child s success, they think it their job to fill it up with as much information as possible, as quickly as possible. This misconception is damaging the brilliance of millions of our youth. JW Wilson is saying that students need to be sheltered and not be bombarded with a lot of information. The dietitians have a hard time in calculating the energy, fluid and protein needs for their patients, all the dietitians use a book called Pocket Resource for Nutrition Assessment which is published by Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. Dietitians use this pocket resource for doing all the energy, fluid and protein calculations for their patients by hand and also dietitians need to memorize all the formulas for the corresponding calculations to do it by hand. So after a thorough research and a few meetings with Dr. Elaine Molaison, a Registered Dietitian and professor in Department of Nutrition and Food Systems, The University of Southern Mississippi, and some other professors and dietitians, we came up with an idea of creating a mobile ... This conference promoted The Beijing Declaration and the Platform for Action, which aimed to provide equal rights to women across the globe (World, n. pag.). Clinton s speech promoting women s rights was successful because she established credibility, addressed the abusive treatment of women around the world, logically responded to that treatment, and provided an inspirational call to action. Clinton established ethos early on in her speech which supported her testimony at the conference. She declares, when families flourish, communities and nations do as well. That is why every woman, every man, every child, every family, and every nation on this planet does have a stake in the discussion that takes place here (n. pag.). She begins to conclude her speech with the unifying structure of family. To create a family, a woman must be present, each of those family compile to create communities, and communities create nations. She uses this to explain that women help form the base of all nations and therefore, the equal treatment of women will reflect prosperously on countries. This supported her argument because it appealed to the diplomats in the audience that can make changes in their various countries around the world. She brings her argument to a close with the following remarks, The time is now. We must move beyond rhetoric. We must move beyond recognition of problems to working together, to have the comment efforts to build that common ground we hope to see (n. pag.). This is successful for the closing of her argument because it specifically calls her audience to make bigger changes than what has previously been done. • 8. Disruption Of The Body s Circadian Clock The circadian clock in humans has influence over many processes in the body. The most prevalent of those arguably is its determination of our sleep and wake cycles (Joseph et al. 2008). Sufficient sleep is an essential part of human health and a lack of sleep can have severe repercussions on the human body and mind (Hamet and Tremblay 2006). Disruption of the body s circadian cycle, by genetic means, can cause: ineffective homeostasis of the sleep cycle, imbalances in the amounts of time spent awake and asleep, and the timing of sleep s onset, all of which can contribute to dangerous sleep related disorders (Hamet and Tremblay 2006). The Functions of Griots Djeli Mamoudo Kouyate is a griot in the country of Guinea, West Africa; he lives in the village of Djeliba Koro, on the Niger River, and is the main source of information for the book Sundiata: An Epic of Old Mali. The book focuses on the trials and tribulations of Sundiata, a legendary warrior, king, and founder of the Mali Empire; and the functions of griots in serving their king. Sundiata is born to Sogolon, and is supposed to become the king of Mali, but Sundiata cannot walk until he turns 11 years old, and his half brother, Dankaran Touman, becomes the king. The history of kings is also important information for the griots to have so they can tell kings of their ancestors battles, to make sure the king knows what he is capable of and to give him inspiration for the battle ahead. Second, griots have a passion for music, and this is also one of their most important contributions to their king and culture. The griot uses song for many purposes, and is very skilled at creating emotion with their songs. A song can be to praise, to celebrate, to raise spirits of warriors, or to control. When Sogolon, Sundiata s mother, first came to the town of Nianiba, the griots in the crowd sang songs of praise (10). An excellent example of the griots using a song to celebrate is on p.21, when Sundiata first stood up and bent a metal bar into a bow, Balla Fasseke, Sundiata s griot, sang Hymn to the Bow , a song created to celebrate and inform the townspeople of the young mans power. Page 54 contains a song by the griots with the specific purpose of inspiring Sundiata s warriors to victory. They had won their battle earlier that day, but Sundiata s army was fearful for the future. This song helped ensure victory for Sundiata, another essential attribute of griots. It is interesting to examine the possible motives behind Hamlet s blatant harshness in this Get the to a nunnery scene toward the easily manipulated and mild mannered girl. Other than the amusing fishmonger and words, words, words scene, a more serious approach to conveying this insanity could be taken; Hamlet s scurrilous behavior toward the fair Ophelia could be taken as a sure sign of craziness, for Polonius is quite positive that Hamlet is deeply in love with his daughter. By mistreating Ophelia, perchance Hamlet can trick Polonius into believing that he has gone mad; Hamlet s display of hostility to a person he is thought to have cared deeply about may promote the idea that he is not the same person as he always was. Although it can not necessarily be proven, it appears that in the Hall of Mirrors Hamlet is aware that Claudius and Polonius are spying. He takes Ophelia roughly and pushes her face into the mirror, only inches from her father. This act seems to be directly aimed to the men hiding behind the door, not Ophelia. From the beginning of Mel Gibson s Hamlet, the audience recognizes that the Prince is more subdued and introspective than in Branagh s version. Though this Hamlet is still angry with his mother, he seems more reluctant to express any disappointment in her direction. In the very first scene of the film, Gertrude asks Hamlet to stay in Denmark, and he consents in an immediate and submissive fashion. • 16. War on Japan Essay through history, man always seems to be at war. In some cases he is the attacker, in others the defender. In both cases, these wars are broken down into two basic elements, the battles that are fought and the individuals who fight them. The elements conflict, courage, fear, cowardice, heroism, victory, and defeat make up the exploits of war we record in our history books. This paper will deal with war, more specifically, a special exploit within one of the most significant wars ever experienced. World War II involved millions of fighting men around the world. What if Army bombers could take off an aircraft carrier? Low tried his idea on Admiral King. King thought the idea had potential so he sent it on to Captain Donald Duncan to turn his plan into fact. This he did, and the Tokyo Raid became fact instead of fiction. The first step in the plan was finding a leader. General Arnold requested Lieutenant Colonel James Dolittle as the man to select the plane and the men for the mission. Dolittle accepted the challenge without hesitation. Arnold let him know in no uncertain terms that he was to be a planner not a pilot. As Doolittle went to work on the project, he saw a lot of problems. First of all, carrier landings were impossible for twin engine bombers. Next, the total air trip was eleven hundred miles. The closest landing area would be in Russia, but Joseph Stalin would not let them land there because he didn t want to be invaded by Japan since he already had his hands full with the Germans. Fortunately, China said it was all right to land there but they said it reluctantly. With these considerations and others, Doolittle determined that the chances of the mission succeeding was fifty fifty. Despite the odds, the decision was made to begin the project. As the first step, despite Arnold, Doolittle wrote himself into the plan as a pathfinder. Doolittle s job during the attack would be to light up Tokyo with incendiary ... • 17. Analysis Of Ernest Hemingway s Hills Like White Elephants Discussing the Elephant in the Room The topic of Hills Like White Elephants by Ernest Hemingway continues to be a hot button issue, even 90 years after the story s publication. Though not as scandalous as it must have been in 1927, it remains the subject of great debate. Two lovers are awaiting a train that will whisk them away to Madrid for the purpose of an abortion. Even though the decision was made before arriving at the station, they continue to debate whether she will go through with it. The American s persuasive dialogue makes it apparent that he wants Jig to have the abortion and is concerned that she will change her mind, however she is more concerned with the fate of her relationship with the man and the effects an abortion may have on her. The first indication of a division between the lovers is the description of the setting where Hemingway writes ...the station was between two lines of rails in the sun (2 3), the rail lines representing the two people and the station the division between them. Upon arriving, they immediately orders two beers. The lovers order several alcoholic drinks during their short 40 minute wait at the station, presumably to ease the tension and calm the anxiety. Once the couple is settled with their drinks, Jig makes an observation about their view of the hills, saying They look like white elephants, (9) to which the American responds I ve never seen one, (10). • 23. Solon Vs Solon What is the underlying mechanism that causes the downfall of leaders and the collapse of societies? A superstitious individual could attribute these transitions to the gods. Solon, ancient Athenian poet and political philosopher, would disagree with this sentiment and argue that it is men themselves who cause their own destruction. Often, the unwillingness of rulers to hear and understand the potential dangers of their greed and selfishness starts this process. To ascertain the best possible choice, one must look to the future. What are the plausible outcomes and pitfalls of one s decisions? A failure to consider this question and a lack of foresight is where many go wrong. In both Herodotus representation of Solon and in his own poetry, Solon is a wise man who devotes his entire life to his objectives and warns foolish leaders of their irresponsibility. He offers a political ideology about the rise and fall of powerful men and great empires. This can be briefly summarized by Herodotus when he says human prosperity never abides long in the same place (Herodotus 1.5.3 4). However, the representations of Solon are in some ways different. For example, the Herodotean version uses anecdotes to teach moral lessons, while the lyric Solon explicitly lays out his grievances against the Athenian oligarchy and proposes ways to reform Athens. Solon s reformations brought Athens out of an age of treachery and lawlessness rife with dishonest, unjust and essentially criminal rulers. He ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

But, everyone has had a mentor, or a role model, once in their life. A mentor, in literature, is a mythological archetype. In Edward Bloor s novel, Tangerine, Antoine Thomas and Luis Cruz fit as the mythological archetype of the mentor. Antoine and Luis are mentors to Paul, who is the hero, because they are both positive figures, who motivate Paul. For instance, when Paul was over at Tino s house working on the science project, he was told that Luis used to play soccer, too. Luis was also handicapped so he didn t understand how. Tino then told Paul that Luis had to be the goalie. Paul thought Tino was trying to make fun of him, but he wasn t. The text states, I looked at Tino to see if he was mocking me. He wasn t. He was just making conversation (Bloor 175). In other words, Paul really thought that Tino was making fun of him. This conversation helped Paul realize that he could still play soccer with his loss of eyesight if Luis can play with a knee injury. The word mocking adds a negative tone to this quote, but it also helps show how this helps Paul. In addition to Luis, Antoine helps motivate Paul, too. For example, Paul had gotten a call from Joey, Paul s best friend, saying that Antoine was at Mr. Donnelly s, a newspaper journalist, house. Paul rode down to see what was happening. A Relationship Between Hero And Her Eventual Suitor In this passage, the reader is exposed to two distinct categories of relationships, one of which being the relationship between Hero and her eventual suitor which is a type of relationship borne out of necessity and social conformity. Both Anthony s and Leonato s statements in this passage support this traditional ideal of marriageand love by dictating to Hero her answer in regards to the impending proposal from whom Hero s family believes to be Don Pedro rather than granting her the power of choice. Anthony blatantly assumes that Hero will adhere to the course of action her father wishes saying, Well, niece, I trust you will be ruled by your father (2.1.42 43). If Hero is being ruled by the desires of her father, it makes her decision to say yes one of necessity in that she must give the answer of her father and not that in her own heart for fear of some sort of retribution. Leonato later reinforces this notion about relationships in stating, Daughter remember what I told you. If the Prince do solicit you in that kind, you know your answer (2.1.56 57). Alone this statement is somewhat vague leaving it available to some interpretation, one of which being that Leonato is reassuring Hero that she discovered the response that best fits her desires in a conversation held offstage and that she should not second guess herself. Refer to examples of existing companies using this structure and relevant theory. The communication runs from the top down and the workers at the operational level have no power in comparison to top level management and CEO s. This works well in manufacturing companies because it is a relatively stable industry and is suited to this rational and task oriented approach. The aim of the rational goal model is to maximize output and key writers on this include Smith, Frederick and Ford. The philosophy of Adam Smith revolved around managers finding the optimal use of resources within organisations, with no regard for the well being of the worker. He advocated the division of labour to increase productivity and wrote about this in his 1776 book The Wealth of Nations where he used a Pin Factory as a model to illustrate the benefits of labour division. He proved that when manufacturing is divided into a series of small tasks, such that each individual performs the same task over and over again, the production line moves much quicker. This promotes efficiency in the use of resources. However, he also discovered through this example that this type of repetitive work has negative effect of workers intellect, happiness and motivation. International trade have been considered as a back bone of the economy of any country. The issue of trade and free trade has been at the prime agendas of economists for over last two centuries. David Ricardo and Adam Smith talked about the importance of free trade, and given Comparative and Absolute Advantage theories. Free trade or globalization is a hotly debated phenomenon in the world economic system of 21st century. If the economic affluence and economic growth of all the nations of the world could be brought at par with each other by the free flow of goods and services, irrespective of boundaries, under the free trade banner, then it is a situation for which, every country should struggle for. Bilateral trading arrangements, although less preferred to multilateral ones, are one of the instruments employed by both developed and developing countries, to protect their export markets and to guarantee their trading activities in the future.
